STORYLINE:
A group of one hundred US veterans arrived at
Charles de Gaulle airport in
Paris on Friday, on their way to
Normandy to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of
D Day.
The group was met by
Frances Minister for Veterans, Hamlaoui Mekachera at a reception at the airport.
The men flew in on an Air France jet, paid for by French businesses and individuals keen to make their visit possible.
Upon arrival, Rocco Moretto, from the
26th Infantry Division, said: "We went through so much sixty years ago. I left so many friends and buddies behind and I come here to honour them, they were the real heroes."
All the men and a handful of female veterans will be given the
Legion D'Honneur, one of
France's highest decorations, in recognition of their sacrifices.
99 will receive their medals on Saturday in Paris from the
French Defence Minister.
One man will receive his decoration
from President Chirac during the commemoration festivities in Normandy over the weekend.
The old soldiers will be staying in some of Paris's most prestigious hotels before making the trip by train to Normandy on Sunday.
