There are growing fears of Greece’s default on its debt and an exit from the eurozone. And European stocks have dived at the start of Monday's trading.
Frankfurt and Paris indices have shed more than four percent. Meanwhile, the euro dropped below one-point-one US dollars. A similar trend is seen in Asian markets particularly in China, Japan and Hong Kong. Chinese shares closed heavily down after a roller-coaster ride. Hong Kong and Tokyo stocks plunged 3.63% and 2.88% respectively. Meanwhile, oil prices have fallen, with the US crude dipping below 59 dollars per barrel to an almost three-week low.

Syria conflict: BBC exclusive interview with President Bashar al-Assad (FULL)
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has defended his government's actions in the region since the uprising against his rule, which erupted in 2011.
In an exclusive interview with the BBC's Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen, Mr Assad denied that his forces had dropped barrel bombs indiscriminately on rebel-held areas, killing thousands of civilians, and dismissed as propaganda a statement by the UN that his government often blocks access to besieged areas for relief organisations.
The Syrian leader also denied that there was a direct dialogue with the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State but confirmed that "general messages" were sometimes passed via third parties.

Syrian Arab Republic
الجمهورية العربية السورية
an Arab country in Western Asia,
bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the West, Turkey to the north,
Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south,
and Israel to the southwest.
In English, the name Syria was formerly synonymous with the Levant, known in Arabic as Sham, while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the third millennium BC.
In the Islamic era, its capital city, Damascus, the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate, and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt.
The population of Syria is
74% Sunni (mostly Sunni Arabs, but also Kurds, Circassians and Turkomans),
12% Alawi and Shia (mostly Arabs),
10% Christian (Arab Christians, Assyrians and Armenians) and
3% Druze (sometimes considered part of Shia Islam).
Combined, 87% of the Syrian population is Muslim.
The majority of the Syrian population is Arab.
The modern Syrian state was established after the First World War as a French mandate, and represented the largest Arab state to emerge from the formerly Ottoman-ruled Arab Levant.
It gained independence in April 1946, as a parliamentary republic.
The post-independence period was tumultuous, and a large number of military coups and coup attempts shook the country in the period 1949--1971.
Between 1958 and 1961, Syria entered a brief union with Egypt, which was terminated by a military coup in Syria.
Syria was under Emergency Law from 1963 to 2011, effectively suspending most constitutional protections for citizens, and its system of government is considered to be non-democratic.
Bashar al-Assad has been president since 2000 and was preceded by his father Hafez al-Assad, who was in office from 1971.
Since March 2011, an uprising against the government of Assad, considered an extension of the events of the Arab spring, has thrown a significant part of the country into armed conflict.
As of July 15, 2012, Syria is effectively in a state of civil war.
World War III (WWIII or Third World War) is the conflict that denotes a successor to World War II (1939--1945).
The conflict would be on a global scale, with common speculation that it would likely be a nuclear war and devastating in nature.
In the wake of World War I, World War II, the commencement of the Cold War and the development, testing and use of nuclear weapons, there was early widespread speculation as to the next global war.
This war was anticipated and planned for by military and civil authorities, and explored in fiction in many countries.
Concepts ranged from the limited use of atomic weapons, to the destruction of the planet.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.
Damascus says the West and its regional allies including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are supporting the militants.

Story Line of POV : The transformation of a one-time goalie for the Syrian national soccer team from peaceful protester to armed opponent of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's regime is chronicled. In 2011, when the documentary begins, 19-year-old Abdul Basset Saroot—once voted the second best goalie in Asia—is singing protest songs to like-minded people in Homs. The regime responds to the protests, however, with artillery fire, tanks, jets and snipers. Assad and his friends see no option but one: take up arms.

The Lebanese Parliament has given pro Syrian President Elias Hrawi an unprecedented three more years in office to oversee peace negotiations with Israel and Lebanon's post-war reconstruction.
The extension had been widely expected after President Hafez Assad of Syria, the undisputed power in Lebanon, decreed last week that he wanted his close ally, a 68-year-old Maronite Catholic, to stay on as head of state.
Hrawi was elected on November 24, 1989, two days after his predecessor, Rene Mouawad, was assassinated with 31 aides and guards in a car-bomb ambush in Beirut after only 17 days in office.

Today's talks are expected to focus on the future of the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau which changed hands in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.
Syria is insisting on a complete and unconditional withdrawal.
Israel has hinted at a willingness to withdraw but is seeking guarantees on peaceful relations from Syria in return.

Earlier Assad said Syria wanted "full withdrawal for full peace" saying Israel must return to Syria the Golan Heights it seized in the 1967 war as well as returning land it seized in southern Lebanon.
Clinton conceded that no Israeli-Syrian peace agreement was at hand but he held out some hope saying Assad had gone beyond previous statements.
Clinton said he would convey the Syrian leader's position in his talks with Rabin.
Clinton also briefly addressed terrorism in his meeting with Assad. The official U.S. position is that Syria is a state sponsor of terrorism.
Assad, at his news conference, denied his country sponsors terrorists and said he and Clinton did not discuss the topic as a separate issue.

LEBANON: PRESIDENT ELIAS HRAWI GIVEN 3 MORE YEARS IN OFFICE
Arabic/Nat
His objectives were clearly defined by the deputies present in Parliament.
SOUNDBITE:(Arabic)
"Everything was decided (the extension of the president's term of office), what we want now is to rearrange the social situation, the management situation, and all the problems we were suffering before."
SUPERCAPTION: Deputy Pierre Helou
Besides social and economic policies, foreign policy is clearly also on the agenda.
SOUNDBITE:(Arabic)
"We said it before during the session, first of all we hope that south Lebanon will be soon free of all foreign armed troops, and the arrangement of the social and living situations will be much improved"
SUPERCAPTION: Deputy Adnan Traboulsi
There is however widespread opposition to the decision - including from the President's own community, the Maronite Christians.
Opponents branded the extension a threat to democracy in a country struggling to rise from the ashes of the war.
Anti-Syrian leaders in exile denounced the vote as an unwarranted violation of Lebanon's sovereignty by Syria, which has some 40,000 troops controlling most of the country.
A protest was banned by the Government. However, Assad's decision to back Hrawi ensured a parliamentary majority well in excess of the two-thirds needed to amend the constitution.
Legislators voted 111-10 to amend Article 49 of Lebanon's constitution and provide for the one-time extension five weeks before Hrawi's six-year term expires.

LEBANON : PRESIDENT ELIAS HRAWI REQUESTS 3 YEAR EXTENSION IN POWER
English/Nat
A plan by the Lebanese president to extend his term in office has met with widespread concern.
President Elias Hrawi, who is supported by the Syrian government, wants an extra three years in power.
But opponents to the plan claim it will kill democracy in the country.
Beirut might be mostly peaceful these days, but a new war has erupted in Lebanese politics.
In an unprecedented move, Parliament plans to amend Lebanon's constitution to allow president, Elias Hrawi, to stay on for three more years after his six year term ends on November the 23rd..
It will mean bypassing a presidential election and the people's vote.
Sixty-eight-year-old Hrawi has the strong support of Syrian president, Hafez Al Assad, whose 40-thousand strong army exerts a decisive influence in the Lebanon.
But the extension is opposed by many who fear Lebanon will become like other Arab countries where leaders stay in office until they die.
SOUNDBITE: 'I would like to have proper president elections, I would like to have renewed elections, I would like to have a new electoral law, I would like to have free elections under the supervision of the United Nations even to assure the neutrality of the elections and the freedom of vote. '
SUPER CAPTION: Mr Dory Chamoun, National Liberal Party leader.
SOUNDBITE:' I mean we don't know the other steps they might take later, and our democracy would just vanish like that'
SUPER CAPTION: Sami Ramadan, University student.
SOUNDBITE: 'I am in principle against an amendment of the article 49 of the Constitution, because I'm against personalized or tailor made amendment of this Constitution'
SUPER CAPTION: Mr Nassib Lahoud, Member of Parliament.
With the Syrian 'peace-keeping' presence so pervasive, the success of the amendment is almost guaranteed.
The vote will be taken by roll call or show of hands, and few politicians will want to be identified publicly as opposing the wishes of the powerful Syrian President Assad.
SOUNDBITE: 'President Hrawi has made a very interest, and a very great achievement in reconstructing the country'
SUPER CAPTION: Mr Sami Al-Khatib, Member of Parliament.
SOUNDBITE: ' Yeh, he's done a lot for the country, and we could hope for the best'
SUPER CAPTION: Imad Hamoud, University student.
Hrawi's supporters point to the great changes he's made, including the huge re-building program in Beirut after years of civil war.
Opponents, however, point to declining living conditions and alleged government corruption.
To the Lebanese people, though, President Hrawi's move is a clear sign their troubled country is not free of its problems yet.

SYRIA: PALESTINIANS EXPELLED BY LIBYA ARRIVE IN LATAKIA
Arabic/Nat
Over 250 Palestinians expelled by Libya have arrived in the Syrian port of Latakia, ending an 11-day ordeal in the Mediterranean.
The ferry carrying the deportees had been docked in Cyprus for almost a week until the Syrian government agreed to give them sanctuary.
Syria had originally refused to allow the vessel to dock but relented following international pressure.
The Palestinian men, women and children were among more than 650 who were deported from Libya ten days ago.
These Palestinians had been camped out in the Syrian port of Latakia for almost a week, waiting for news of their loved ones, who had been stranded in Cyprus with nowhere to go.
Their relatives were among more than 650 Palestinians - half of them children - who were deported from Libya ten days ago.
Thousands more are being expelled by Libyan leader Colonel Moammar Gadhafi supposedly to show his opposition to the Israeli-PLO peace accord.
For those counting the hours at Latakia it had been an anxious wait.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"I have been here for three days waiting for my daughter and my nephew coming from Libya because Mr. Gadhafi expelled them. We have no-one in the world except Mr. Assad who's saved us."
SUPER CAPTION: Yassine Abd Al-Fattah - Palestinian relative of deportees
The ferry Fayza Express first headed for Syria ten days ago but the authorities refused to let it dock. It then sailed to Cyprus where it arrived on Tuesday. Syria finally relented under international pressure and agreed to take in all passengers carrying Syrian documents.
After the 16-hour journey from Cyprus the 250 passengers - and those waiting on the quayside - were jubilant.
Many of them chanted in praise of Syrian President Hafez Assad, whose government agreed to give them sanctuary.
Though some of the Palestinians were elated to be heading for Syria, others worry that they'll face yet more trouble in there.
Most Arab countries have refused to receive the Palestinians, saying they should go to the Palestinian-ruled West Bank and Gaza Strip.

SYRIA: WARREN CHRISTOPHER HAS MEETING WITH PRESIDENT ASSAD
English/Nat
U-S Secretary of State Warren Christopher has boosted prospects for renewed negotiations between Israel and Syria after a four-hour "positive and constructive" meeting with Syrian President Hafez Assad.
Christopher's brief but upbeat account to reporters before flying to Jerusalem indicated the two sides are likely to reopen negotiations, possibly through a Christopher shuttle mission next year.
On his visit to Syria to improve Israel-Syria relations, U-S Secretary of State Warren Christopher had talks with Syria's President Hafez Assad.
He said the four hour talks were constructive and had boosted the prospects for restarting talks between the two countries.
Talks between Israel and Syria have effectively at a stalemate over the Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights.
Israel captured the strategic land in a war with Syria in 1967 and the Syrian President Hafez Assad has been demanding it back ever since.
Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres signaled in Washington this week he would be prepared to negotiate leaving the territory for the right peace terms.
Buoyed by this more conciliatory attitude from Israel, Christopher said his four hour meeting with the Syrian President went well.
SOUNDBITE:
"Based upon the constructive discussions today, I can say that the parties clearly want to press forward, the remainder of my time here will be spent trying to find the best way , the best process, the best means to press forward as the parties definitely want to do."
SUPER CAPTION: Warren Christopher, U-S Secretary of State
An announcement is expected this weekend on a schedule for a series of talks in Damascus and Jerusalem.
The shuttle diplomacy is hoped to yield a treaty centered on an Israeli withdrawal from its security zone on the Golan Heights.

USA: ISRAELI AND SYRIAN DELEGATIONS ARRIVE FOR MIDDLE EAST TALKS
English/Nat
The Israeli and Syrian delegations have arrived at a rural conference centre in Maryland in the U-S for top level talks on peace between their two countries.
It is hoped the crucial issue of the Golan Heights, on the northern border between Israel and Syria, can be resolved to bring a wider peace to the Middle East.
The Syrian delegation was first to arrive at the Aspen-Wye Plantation, the rural conference centre in Maryland where the talks are being held.
They were followed not long after by the Israeli delegation.
The two countries are resuming their land-for-peace negotiations with an unusual air of optimism that the results this time will be positive.
The Clinton administration is taking an active role in the negotiations.
U-S officials will participate in all sessions at the "River House" of Aspen-Wye Plantation, about 50 miles (80 kms) east of Washington on the East Wye River.
At stake are the future of the Golan Heights, a strategic border enclave that Israel occupied in its war against Syria in 1967.
Israeli-Syrian talks broke down last June in Washington, but the two sides agreed to try again after Secretary of State Warren Christopher traveled to the region two weeks ago.
Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres already has hinted that for the right peace terms Syrian President Hafez Assad could recover the border buffer zone.
And Assad has telegraphed that he is inclined to come to terms with Israel.
Although the two leaders are not attending in person, their top negotiators go into the talks buoyed up by these promising moves.
SOUNDBITE:
This obviously is the first time in many months that the Syrians and Israelis have gotten together and met. We hope to be able to facilitate that meeting and facilitate their progress on a broad range of issues.
SUPER CAPTION: Glyn Davies, U-S State Department spokesman
Davies also gave reporters a glimpse Wednesday of the delegations' restricted meeting place.
This is the only time reporters will be allowed into the River House, a 26-room mansion in hundreds of acres of parkland.
It will be off limits to media and the public for two rounds of meetings this week and next.
The Wye Plantation talks are to run through Friday and resume after New Year's Day.

ISRAEL: US SECRETARY OF STATE WARREN CHRISTOPHER VISIT
English/Nat
US Secretary of State, Warren Christopher, was back in Israel today (Tuesday) after a brief visit to Syria. He had an early morning meeting
with Israeli Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin.
Christopher reportedly made progress in talks yesterday (Monday) with Syrian President Hafez Assad.
At issue is the disputed area of the Golan Heights on the border of Syria and Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's house was the setting for talks between Rabin and US Secretary of State Warren Christopher.
Christopher did not speak to waiting journalists but his aides have said the five-hour meeting in Damascus yesterday with Syrian President Hafez Assad was helpful.
It seems Christopher has found renewed interest and enthusiasm from both Israel and Syria, to restart peace talks.
The Israel-Syria talks broke down in December with Israeli and
Syrian military chiefs negotiating security arrangements for the
Golan Heights in the expectation Rabin would agree to at least a
partial pullback.
Christopher is expected to embark on the second stage of peace negotiations- he's expected to continue serving as an emissary between the Syrians and the Israelis.
Rabin briefly told the press waiting outside his office this morning, that the meeting with Christopher was 'very good, as usual.'
SOUNDBITE:
"We have to find a general definition of what will be the purpose of the security arrangements- that's what we're negotiating now."
SUPER CAPTION: Israeli Prime-Minister, Yitzhak Rabin
SOUNDBITE:
"There are no security arrangements if Israel were to withdraw from the Golan. You can not defend Israel against incoming tanks with out the Golan... without Israeli tanks in the Golan."
SUPER CAPTION: Benjamin Netanyahu, Opposition Leader
While U-S officials reported progress in breaking the stalemate between Israel and Syria, Rabin told his parliament that there is no agreement on four major components. And
he says without that, there can't be talks.

MIDDLE EAST: ISRAEL AND SYRIA: HOPE OF RESUMING NEGOTIATIONS
Natural Sound
US Secretary of State Warren Christopher raised hopeful signs today (Monday) of resuming stalled negotiations between Israel and Syria.
Christopher spent five hours talking with Syrian President Hafez Assad in Damascus.
In Damascus today (Monday) Syrian President Hafez Assad met US Secretary of State Warren Christopher. Their meeting lasted five hours.
Assad's position has been that Israel should commit itself to a withdrawal from the occupied area of the Golan Heights that Israel seized in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.
Before arriving in Damascus Christopher was hoping that he might be able to penetrate the wall of silence that has kept Syria and Israel apart for over a year.
One of Christopher's aides said the five-hour meeting with Assad had been very good and had touched on a range of issues.
Christopher was due back in Damascus on Tuesday after shuttling back to Israel, and a brief stop in Jordan, his aides said.
Success in convincing Syria and Israel to talk would crown a trip that has clearly tired the 69-year-old American official.
He was hospitalised recently in Canada with a bleeding ulcer and has now taken the precaution of travelling with a doctor.
He was all smiles today, though, in the hopes that his efforts will help secure a lasting Middle East peace.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Visits Distressed Families of Adra
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad paid a visit to several families who were displaced by militants who took over the town of Adra in the Damascus countryside. He met with members of those families as they spoke about their suffering from having members of their families either kidnapped or killed by terrorists and from being displaced and not being able to return home. President Assad likened Adra to a "little Syria" in its residents' diversity and the suffering it is undergoing due to terrorism.

سورية or سوريا : ,
Syrian Arab Republic

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Interview with Ikhbariya (English Subtitles)
Translated by: Arabi Souri

During this televised interview with Syrian al-Ikhbariya TV, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says the West "will pay a heavy price" for pitting al-Qaeda militants against the Syrian government.
Assad also condemned measures taken by Turkey and some of the country's Arab neighbors to support anti-Syrian terrorists, and their attempts to start a sectarian civil war in the country.
He added that Jordan has allowed thousands of militants to enter Syria through its borders.
Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the US was dispatching 200 troops to Jordan for military operations along the Syrian border.

SYRIA: PRESIDENT CLINTON'S VISIT
President Clinton is holding talks on Middle East peace with the Syrian President, Hafez Assad, after arriving in Damascus on the latest leg of his six-nation Middle East tour.
Clinton is hoping to capitalise on the momentum towards peace following Wednesday's historic peace agreement between Jordan and Israel.
This is the first visit by an American leader to Syria in 20 years.
Clinton was met at the airport by President Assad. The two men shook hands and stood side by side for the welcoming ceremony.
The two leaders then drove to the presidential palace for talks.
Clinton arrived from Jordan where he witnessed the signing of a peace accord between Israel and Jordan that ended a 46-year-state of war.

ISRAEL: PRESIDENT CLINTON'S VISIT
Nat Sound
President Clinton has arrived in Israel for talks with Israeli leaders on Middle East peace.
Clinton travelled to Jerusalem from talks in Damascus where Syrian President Hafez Assad renewed his call for Israel to give up Arab land in exchange for full peace.
President Clinton touched down after a short flight from Damascus where he held talks with the Syrian President, Hafez Assad.
Clinton was welcomed at the airport by President Ezer Weizman, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Cabinet ministers and religious leaders.
SOUNDBITE:
"Like all Americans I have been inspired by Israel's long struggle to survive and flourish. Today Israel is strong and growing stronger. You stand on the threshold of a new era of peace and security. America as always is proud to stand by you."
SUPER CAPTION: President Clinton
Assad, at his news conference, denied his country sponsors terrorists and said he and Clinton did not discuss the topic as a separate issue.

for progress. This is an issue which is very important to the
long-term security of the United States."

Clinton sot on Mideast: "I think there are difficult issues still
between Israel and Syria, but I believe both leaders do want to
make peace. As you know, before I announced that King Hussein and
Prime Minister Rabin would come here to end their state of war and
to commit to establishing full peace, I had a long talk with
President Assad on the telephone. I then spoke with him again. I
am convinced that he is still very much interested in a
