The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644AD) to the end of the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912AD). It is located in the center of Beijing, China, and now houses the Palace Museum. For almost 500 years, it served as the home of emperors and their households, as well as the ceremonial and political center of Chinese government. Built in 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 buildings and covers 72 ha (180 acres). The palace complex exemplifies traditional Chinese palatial architecture, and has influenced cultural and architectural developments in East Asia and elsewhere. The Forbidden City was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987, and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world.

Needing every resource available for the coming battle, the emperor releases General Sun Chuanting, whom he had previously jailed after the fall of Chi-nan Fu. The general's orders now are to defeat the rebels. Adding to the regime's problems is the spread of infectious diseases, in particular one resembling the flu. Wu Youke, a doctor, surmises that it might be transmitted by airborne "liqi", and he has developed a way of dealing with the epidemic, but he is too far ahead of his time and his colleagues disparage his theory. When General Sun arrives at the regime's key military base, he finds that there are far fewer soldiers than he was informed, that many of the weapons and much of the gunpowder are useless due to lack of maintenance, and that the land that was supposed to grow food for the army was illegally sold to corrupt local officials. And, worst of all, disease is devastating the entire garrison. Even its doctor has died. General Sun has no other choice but to summon Wu Youke and gamble on his radical theory. General Sun and Dr. Wu are now two isolated men fighting impossible odds.

Wu Sangui had three choices. He could join Li Zicheng, but would be villified by generations of Chinese, for allying with the killer of the last emperor of the Ming. He could join the Manchus, and together destroy Li and his rebels. Or he could just sit tight, and await destruction if the two coorperated... I'm curious - just how strong or big is Wu Sangui's Army at that time compared to the Manchus and Li Zicheng. and I thought - allying with the Manchus...a Barbaric Tribe was a bigger crime than joining Li Zicheng. afterall Li and his army were still Han Chinese. There's no way that the Manchus and Li Zicheng could cooperate in any way so what if Wu Sanggui decided to held on to his fort and contact the remains of Southern Ming Army to fight Li Zicheng while he will resist the Manchus at Shanhaiguan. or If Wu Sangui and Li Zicheng joined forces, would they be able to fight off the Manchus? and If Wu Sangui " sit tight " at Shanhaiguan, the Manchus decided to wait... will Li Zicheng finish off Wu Sangui or will he use Wu Sangui as a "barrier between he and the Manchus" and will Li Zicheng armies be strong enough to attack and conquer the rest of Southern Ming. what do u think... 崇禎為什麼不能南渡？ why the last emperor in Ming Dynasty could escape to the China Southern ? 명나라는 심유경을 한양의 일본군 본진에 다시 보내어 화의를 계속 추진하였고 일본군도 보급 문제로 말미암은 전황 불리, 명군의 진주, 악역(惡疫)이 유행한 탓에 화의에 응하여 1593년(선조 26년) 음력 4월에 전군을 남하시켜 서생포에서 웅천(雄川 : 지금의 창원)에 이르는 사이에 성을 쌓고 화의 진행을 기다리게 되었다. 교섭이 진행되면서 조선 조정은 군사제도를 능률이 많이 나게 개편하고 의병 부대를 관군으로 편입시키는 등 방비를 강화해 나아갔다. 일본군은 남해안으로 철군하여 왜성을 축조하고 전투를 중단한 채 주둔하였다. 명(明)과 일본군 양측은 서로 자국이 유리한 처지에서 화의를 교섭하려고 하였다. 일본군은 명 황녀(皇女)를 일본의 후비(後妃)로 삼을 것, 한반도의 남부 4도를 내줄 것, 감합 무역을 부활할 것, 조선 왕자와 대신 12명을 인질로 삼을 것을 명에 요구하였으나 일본군이 한 요구는 대부분 수용되지 않았고 3년에 걸친 화의 교섭은 결국 결렬되었지만, 협상하는 과정에서 포로가 된 조선의 두 왕자는 일본군이 조선 왕실에 돌려주었다.그러나 임해군의 두 자녀는 끝내 돌려주지 않았다. 설명출처:위키백과

Part 2: Protecting the Dragon In September, 1792, King George III dispatches the first British trade mission to China. Under the leadership of Lord George Macartney, the delegation intends to persuade Emperor Qian-long to open his country for trade with the West. After months of Qian-long's stalling tactics, the Brits take a three day journey out from Beijing, to be greeted with a view few Europeans had seen before: the Great Wall winding its way across mountains, valleys and verdant plains. Macartney believed this was "the most stupendous work of human hands," and this perception of the "Great Wall" would endure to this day. But China was surrounded by not one, but two walls: a physical and a mental one. Since the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368-1644), China had tried to shut itself off from the outside world. Mongol and later Manchu invaders found gaps in the northern frontiers. One of the most tenacious opponents, Altan Khan (16th century), even dared lay siege to Beijing. As a result, the walls were fortified even further, fortresses and garrisons were built. Finally, the wall reached the sea, enclosing China and shutting out anything foreign for centuries to come. Eventually, this attitude was the Ming Dynasty's undoing. In 1644, a rebel Manchu took the Dragon Throne. Macartney's mission (in the late 18th century) was a colossal failure, but his assessment of the Great Wall remained deeply engrained in the minds of Westerners, a myth that shrouds the true story of the wall even today.

The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications made of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials, generally built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China to protect the Chinese states and empires against the raids and invasions of the various nomadic groups of the Eurasian Steppe. Several walls were being built as early as the 7th century bc;[3] these, later joined together and made bigger and stronger, are now collectively referred to as the Great Wall.[4] Especially famous is the wall built 220–206 bc by Qin Shihuang, the first Emperor of China. Little of that wall remains. Since then, the Great Wall has on and off been rebuilt, maintained, and enhanced; the majority of the existing wall is from the Ming Dynasty. Other purposes of the Great Wall have included border controls, allowing the imposition of duties on goods transported along the Silk Road, regulation or encouragement of trade and the control of immigration and emigration. Furthermore, the defensive characteristics of the Great Wall were enhanced by the construction of watch towers, troop barracks, garrison stations, signaling capabilities through the means of smoke or fire, and the fact that the path of the Great Wall also served as a transportation corridor. The main Great Wall line stretches from Shanhaiguan in the east, to Lop Lake in the west, along an arc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia. Yunnan´s most famous site is the unique Stone Forest Of Shi Lin, a forest of rock that extends for 27,000 hectares. Hong Kong is a city of the superlative with glimmering skyscrapers that seem to take root in the sky and one elegant building after another with shining glass and hi-tech facades. China is a world within a world!
