The Leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten is calling on Labor to make a dramatic change in its platform at this weekend's national ALP conference and support the turning back of asylum seeker boats. It's expected the move will be fiercely opposed by the party's left. The Refugee Council of Australia has also condemned the proposed policy reversal. More

At least that is the theory behind a fact-finding mission by members of Australia's Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security who are travelling from Britain to France and the United States. They are looking at the best ways to counter radicalization, especially through social media, and also the controversial issue of stripping dual nationals of their citizenship. More

The ABC has succumbed to the commercial reality which has hit many retailers and is shutting down its shop fronts around the country. It's costing hundreds of millions of dollars, but an expert says it's basically useless. Victoria's voluntary pre-commitment scheme for poker machine users is being rolled out across the state. Gambling researcher Charles Livingstone says it won't do anything to reduce problem gambling because it's voluntary. More

What do American singer Taylor Swift, Chinese artist Ai Weiwei and couple of hundred lawyers have in common? The answer is that they've all been pulled, one way or another, into China's murky and controversial crackdown on dissent. While the girl from Pennsylvania may have had no idea how she got involved, the lawyers could probably see it coming a mile off, and as for Ai Weiwei, he's just happy to be able to leave his country again and will likely now head to Australia. A drug for Alzheimer's disease is currently being tested for its potential to slow its progression. Preliminary results show that in mild cases, the disease was slowed by 34 per cent. The US pharmaceutical company behind the study says more research needs to be done, but the results have met with cautious optimism. More
