Neill Blomkamp Reveals Ripley & Hicks In More Concept Art From His 'Alien' Movie

16 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Remember a few weeks ago when we wrote about movie franchises that maybe should never have been franchised in the first place? “Alien” could be one of them. Ridley Scott’s terrifying original is still remarkable, and James Cameron’s sequel “Aliens” managed to expand the universe by switching genres into the action war movie to great effect. But from “Alien 3” through the “V. Predator” team-ups to Scott’s recent “Prometheus,” all the other films in the series have been disappointing from one degree to another.  It remains to be seen if Neill Blomkamp can revive the series successfully. The South African at the helm of “District 9” was also behind the deeply disappointing “Elysium” and “Chappie,” has moved on to develop a new “Alien” picture that would see the return of Sigourney Weaver to the role of Ripley, moving alongside a potential sequel to “Prometheus.”  “Alien” fans cooled »

The Human Centipede 3: a predictably illogical conclusion

9 minutes ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

‘Damningly for a franchise once known for its indelibility, the result is largely forgettable, and fans seem to have inferred as much’

Say what you like about the Human Centipede franchise, but it’s been a godsend to the home-entertainment market. Unsuited to the civilised viewing experience of the cinema, previous entries in the trilogy made their biggest mark on DVD, where part one was steadily unearthed by darkly curious genre fans, while the follow-up debuted to an onslaught of re-digested thinkpieces on the nature of sadism, the limits of free speech, and the dubious medical credibility of stitching together hapless sadsacks mouth-to-anus.

In the case of the second instalment, home video also provided the only way to see the film in its entirety (albeit on imported DVD or region-tweaked Netflix) after British censors insisted on two-and-a-half minutes of mandatory cuts. That decision, largely symbolic in the age of the internet, »

Chris Pratt And Jennifer Lawrence's Passengers Found The Voice Of Its Robot

5 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Throw actors like Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence together in any movie and I.m likely to see it no matter what. Make it a science fiction movie, even better. The duo.s upcoming two-hander Passengers already had my attention, but now they.ve added an intriguing new piece, Michael Sheen, who is reportedly going to lend his voice to a robot. Variety reports that Sheen, currently starring in the series Masters of Sex, which just started its third season on Showtime, but who is an actor I will always remember for playing Wesley Snipes on 30 Rock, is all set to join the party on Sony.s long in the works sci-fi romance. Passengers takes place on a spaceship bound for a distant planet with a group of travelers who are all in a cryogenic sleep due to the long-distance nature of their trip. Niche Streaming Site Acorn Lands Emmy Nomination for 'Poirot'

6 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

The Emmy nomination of “Agatha Christie’s Poirot: Curtain, Poirot’s Last Case” was not simply an odd surprise.  It was the first Primetime Emmy nomination for a niche streaming service. Netflix (“House of Cards,” “Orange Is the New Black” and now “Bloodline” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) and Amazon (“Transparent”) are the blue whales of internet streaming. Acorn TV, which submitted “Poirot” for an Emmy, is a little fish.  But little fish can swim fast, and Acorn may well be the harbinger of a future full of successful niche streaming services as viewers cut their cable cords and move online. Acorn TV, with its vast supply of classic and new British mysteries available for a subscription fee of $4.99 a month, proves that a narrowly focused streaming services can compete. Until 2012, Acorn Media, now owned by Rlj Entertainment, was a distributor of British mysteries on DVD.  Acorn took the leap into production when ITV, »

Ryan Reynolds Wants Cable To Lead The Team In An X-Force Movie

7 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

We may not see Ryan Reynolds take the title role in Deadpool until next year, but that didn.t stops crowds from going nuts for the Merc with the Mouth at San Diego Comic-Con recently. And while Marvel is busy with their cinematic universe, Fox has the rights to a number of comic book characters, and we keep hearing people calling for them to crossover. For his part, Reynolds has a very specific team up he.d like to see: X-Force. Talking to ComicBook.com, Reynolds kicked around ideas for potential crossovers. When the subject of X-Force was broached, the question of whether or not he.d like to see Deadpool lead the crew came up, and Reynolds said: I always see Deadpool running against the grain for everything he does.
