The COSC Certification – Chronometry saga n°5

The COSC certificate is the most widespread label validating a watch's precision. Respecting the ISO 3159 international norm, it ensures the accuracy of a movement, and rarely a finished watch. We visited one of the three workshops that control more than 1.6 million calibers every year to interview its director Andreas Wyss. He underscores one particular fact: even if the norm was implemented in 1976, the level of precision remains, in particular as the thousands of movements produced every day must respect it.

The Fleurier Quality Foundation label is undoubtedly the most demanding of all watch certifications. It embodies the essence of Haute Horlogerie according to Chopard. The certification process consists of a succession of 4 stages aiming to guarantee not only the watch movement’s precision, but also its reliability, its durability and the quality of its aesthetic finish. One of them is the Chronometer certification. The movements are submitted to the entire series of tests in accordance with the ISO 3159 norm. All of the movements submitted for Fleurier Quality certification must have passed the tests. “Chronometer-certified” means that the movement of a watch is adjusted to within a tolerance of between -4 /+6 seconds per 24 hours, corresponding to 99.99 % precision. This supreme guarantee of reliability and precision is issued by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres, COSC), an independent organisation certified by the Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS).
