Shabani Christophe Nonda (born 6 March 1977 in Bujumbura, Burundi) is a retired DR Congolese international footballer who played as a striker. He earned 36 caps and scored 20 goals for the DR Congo, and was selected for their squad for the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nonda began his career at Atlético Olympic in 1992. After playing in Tanzania with Young Africans and in South Africa with Vaal Professionals, he was discovered by FIFA agent Marcelo Houseman who then placed Nonda in Switzerland with FC Zürich in 1996 for a transfer fee of US$150,000.
After finishing top goalscorer in Switzerland two years running he was transferred to French side Stade Rennais in 1998 for a record fee of US$9 million dollars, and later moved to AS Monaco in 2000 again for €20 million, to replace David Trezeguet. His performances, including those in the 2004 UEFA Champions League Final, earned him a move to Italian Serie A club A.S. Roma on a three-year deal in 2005 on free transfer, for which he earned €1.8 million in gross per season. (however the tax rate including regional tax may have added up to around 50%) However, he never lived up to his potential – partly due to a knee injury sustained while at Monaco – and spent the 2006–07 season on loan at English side Blackburn Rovers. While at Blackburn, Nonda announced his intention to sign a permanent deal, Blackburn opted not to sign Nonda on a permanent deal and he later signed for Turkish giant Galatasaray in August 2007 on a two-year deal. On 28 January 2010 Galatasaray released him by mutual consent.
NONDA (born Epaminondas Papadopoulos in Athens on October 11, 1922; died October 30, 2005) was a leading Greek artist of the school of Paris. He was one of the handful of Greek artists who received scholarships from the French government to attend the Ecole De Beaux Arts in the late 40's. He was represented primarily by the Galerie Charpentier in the 50's and early 60's and was well known for his outdoor installations under the Pont Neuf Bridge in 1960's Paris as well as his unconventional use of cow's blood as a medium. His work is often associated with large scale figurative and abstract expressionist canvases, and monumental sculpture in post-war Paris.
Nonda studied drawing and painting under Spiros Vikatos, who encouraged him in the classical tradition and praised his particular gift in portraiture. His first works were portraits of his family, bold nudes, as well as landscapes, seascapes. Many of these works survived the destruction of his atelier in Athens during the Second World War. While his temperament was clearly precocious, his early paintings were deeply influenced by his interest in El Greco, Ingres, Delacroix and Frans Hals among others, and showed a great respect for the masters. In 1947 he left Greece on a scholarship to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he studied in the ateliers Narbonne and Le Magny. Once in Paris, Nonda began to develop the image of the archetypal “ Femme Parisenne” (“Parisian Woman”) which was to remain a source of inspiration throughout his life’s work.
