The Slavs arrived in the territory of present day Slovakia in the 5th and 6th centuries during the migration period. In the course of history, various parts of today's Slovakia belonged to Samo's Empire (the first known political unit of Slavs), Principality of Nitra (as independent polity, as part of Great Moravia and as part of Hungarian Kingdom), Great Moravia, Kingdom of Hungary, the Austro-Hungarian Empire or Habsburg Empire, and Czechoslovakia. A separate Slovak state briefly existed during World War II, during which Slovakia was a dependency of Nazi Germany between 1939 and 1944. From 1945 Slovakia once again became a part of Czechoslovakia. The present-day Slovakia became an independent state on 1 January 1993 after the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia.

Stroll narrow pedestrian streets of pastel 18th-century buildings or sample the nigh-on ubiquitous sidewalk cafes under the watchful gaze of the city castle, harking back to medieval times. Done with the old? In with the new: the city boasts intriguing Socialist-era architecture worth checking out and one of Eastern Europe's most spectacular modern art spaces. Contrasts like this are all part of Bratislava's allure.

Animal Planet : The magic of the Morava river
The Morava's flood plain is among the last untamed waterways in the heart of Europe. The river flows along the border, skirting Slovakia and Austria before reaching the Danube. Its vast wetlands, swamps, and backwaters that extend into all three countries provide refuge for countless species of plants and animals. This month, Animal Planet takes a look at this RIVER WITHOUT FRONTIERS, which is a stepping stone for east-west migrations of many land animals and a stop-over for numerous birds on their annual migrations from northern Europe to Africa and back.
Not long ago, the Morava was part of the great divide between Eastern and Western Euro

Not long ago, the Morava was part of the great divide between Eastern and Western Europe, flowing along the Iron Curtain and marking the borders of three countries. Its course ancient, its bed much older than the Alps, when in spate its backwaters, swamps and wooded floodplains could be taken for Amazonia or the Orinoco. Today, the Morava runs right through the heart of Central Europe. Doing away with borderlines between dry land and water, countries and nations, mountain ranges, and even between continents, the Morava's expansive green corridor runs from the Baltic to the Black Sea.
RIVER WITHOUT FRONTIERS takes us deep into the heart of the Morava's riverine wilderness, which is an invaluable sanctuary to many species of wildlife such as greylag geese, herons, storks, red deer, wild boar, the imperial eagle and a rich array of waterfowl. Be amazed by its natural beauty and the diversity of habitats that house a specific composition of animal and plant species endemic to the Morava - the RIVER WITHOUT FRONTIERS.
The Morava river with its forests is one of the most beautiful and ecologically valuable riverscapes featuring the richest biodiversity in all of Central Europe. Like a green ribbon, the riverine forests of the Morava - together with those of the Danube and the Dyje - link the Alps with the Carpathians, forming a bridge between Eastern and Central Europe. The infl uence of the Pannonian climate with its hot and dry summers combines with the slowly receding high waters to form a mosaic of extremely different habitats: moist meadows lie close to sand dunes, riverine forests alternate with dry primeval oak forests. This enormous diversity of habitats creates a refuge for animal and plant species, a specifi c composition that cannot be found in any other place.

Take a tour of Bojnice Castle in Bojnice, Slovakia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Slovakia has numerous grand and elaborate castles, one such castle lies in the small central town of Bojnice.
This fairy-tale structure is one of the country's most luxurious and ethereal castles, and is appropriately named Bojnice Castle.
The castle started out as a wooden stronghold sometime in the eleventh or twelfth century.
It has been the subject of copious reconstructions to suit the tastes of its many patrons.
The attention this edifice received ensured that it has stayed in superb condition.
The immense pine trees and partial moat of Bojnice Castle provides a truly angelic setting.

Dr Vazil Hudák Eurozone: Current Challenges From the Perspective of Slovakia - 07 April 2014
About the Speech: Dr. Vazil Hudák's address to the IIEA came as Slovakia celebrated the 10th anniversary of its accession to the EU. In his address, Dr. Hudák discussed the main challenges facing a small state in the European Union, particularly in the context of the post-crisis stabilisation of the Eurozone. Dr. Hudák also highlighted Slovakia's most significant successes since joining the Union - many of which parallel the Irish experience.
About the Speaker: Dr. Vazil Hudák is State Secretary of the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic, a position he has held since 2012. Previously, Mr Hudák was the head of J.P. Morgan Chase Bank's Eastern European Public Sector section. Dr. Hudák received his doctorate from Harvard Business School, Boston. - See more at: http://www.iiea.com/events/eurozone-current-challenges-from-the-perspective-of-slovakia#sthash.rgXvKG1u.dpuf

Animal Planet : The magic of the Morava river
