The arrival of the Serbs to the Balkans in the 7th century, established several states, eventually forming the Serbian Empire in the 14th century. By the 16th century, Serbia was conquered and occupied by the Ottoman Empire, at times interrupted by the Habsburgs. In the early 19th century the Serbian revolution re-established the country as the region's first constitutional monarchy, which subsequently expanded its territory and pioneered the abolition of feudalism in the Balkans. The former Habsburg crownland of Vojvodina united with Serbia in 1918. Following World War I, Serbia formed Yugoslavia with other South Slavic peoples which existed in several forms up until 2006, when the National Assembly of Serbia declared independence and the legal succession to the former State Union. In February 2008 the parliament of UNMIK-governed Kosovo, Serbia's southern province, declared independence, with mixed responses from international governments.

Serbia has connected West with East for centuries – a land in which civilisations, cultures, faiths, climates and landscapes meet and mingle.
It is located in the centre of the Balkan Peninsula, in southeastern Europe. The northern portion belongs to central Europe, but in terms of geography and climate it is also partly a Mediterranean country. Serbia is landlocked but as a Danube country it is connected to distant seas and oceans. Serbia is a crossroads of Europe and a geopolitically important territory. The international roads and railway lines, which run through the country’s river valleys, form the shortest link between Western Europe and the Middle East.
From the agricultural regions of the Pannonian Plain in the north, across the fertile river valleys and orchard-covered hills of Šumadija, the landscape of Serbia continues southward, gradually giving way to mountains rich in canyons, gorges and caves, as well as well-preserved forests. Serbia’s beautiful mountains, national parks, rivers and lakes are the perfect location for an active outdoor holiday – from hunting and fishing to extreme sports.
Many times during its rich, centuries-long history, Serbia has been at the centre of Europe’s and the world’s attention, out of all proportion to its modest size, economic might and number of inhabitants. Many lessons on bravery, patriotism and the struggle for freedom can be learned wherever you turn in Serbia, as you pass through its cities and regions.
The cultural and historical heritage of Serbia begins with prehistoric archaeological sites and its legacy from classical antiquity. Perhaps its greatest riches, though, are in the many mediaeval Serbian churches and monasteries, some of which are included on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
All year round, numerous cultural, entertainment, traditional and sporting events are held in Serbia, demonstrating the creative power and spiritual vitality of this country.
Today, Serbia is a modern, democratic European country, on the path to membership of the European Union, which a diverse range of visitors – from young backpackers to participants in congresses and fairs – visit every day.

FOR THE END OF ERA OF FOSSIL FUELS
Greens of Serbia and NGO What do you want? organized the performance at Belgrade's Republic Square on February 13th and this way joined this year's biggest environmental action on Earth - the Global Divestment Day.
The broad coalition of environmental organizations, green parties and individuals around the world who care about the future gathered around the Fossil Free campaign on 13th and 14th of February, 2015, on all continents and asked for divestment in fossil fuels. Hundreds of thousands of citizens of the planet openly called for an end of public and private investment in fossil fuels on the streets. In the same way the civilization has defeated apartheid in South Africa. 1% of the owners of the world's wealth has no desire to stop global warming, which directly threaten our existence. Will we, 99% of citizens of the planet, allow greed to win over our long-term need for survival?
In Serbia, there is no need to prove the seriousness of climate change after last year's catastrophic floods, of which we are in danger even now. The total dependence of our country on fossil fuels is a long-term problem that brings lasting environmental pollution, excessive emission of harmful gases into the atmosphere, losses in agriculture, growing healthcare costs and outbreak of diseases. Although we are living in poverty, in which these global threats, including our asthma, bronchitis and dozens of lives taken away by the floods - sounds abstract, it is important to understand and raise our voices.

In antiquity, Thraco-Dacians inhabited the region, and after 279 BC Celts conquered the city, naming it Singidūn. It was conquered by the Romans during the reign of Augustus, and awarded city rights in the mid 2nd century. It was settled by the Slavs in the 520s, and changed hands several times between the Byzantine Empire, Frankish Empire, Bulgarian Empire and Kingdom of Hungary before it became the capital of Serbian King Stephen Dragutin (1282--1316). In 1521, Belgrade was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and became the seat of the Sanjak of Smederevo. It frequently passed from Ottoman to Habsburg rule, which saw the destruction of most of the city during the Austro-Ottoman wars. Belgrade was again named the capital of Serbia in 1841. Northern Belgrade remained the southernmost Habsburg post until 1918, when the city was reunited. As a strategic location, the city was battled over in 115 wars and razed to the ground 44 times. Belgrade was the capital of Yugoslavia (in various forms of governments) from its creation in 1918, to its final dissolution in 2006.
Belgrade has a special administrative status within Serbia and it is one of five statistical regions of Serbia. Its metropolitan territory is divided into 17 municipalities, each with its own local council. It covers 3.6% of Serbia's territory, and 22.5% of the country's population lives in the city. The city has been awarded many titles, and the nomination for European Capital of Culture 2020.
Houseboats on Ada Ciganlija
Extreme sports are available, such as bungee jumping, water skiing, and paintballing. There are numerous tracks on the island, where it is possible to ride a bike, go for a walk, or go jogging. Apart from Ada, Belgrade has total of 16 islands on the rivers, many still unused. Among them, the Great War Island at the confluence of Sava, stands out as an oasis of unshattered wildlife (especially birds). These areas, along with nearby Small War Island, are protected by the city's government as a nature preserve. Tourist income is annually around 800 million Euros. In 2012, Belgrade visited 976.674 registered tourists. From that number 771.299 were foreign. Also more than 100.000 tourists arrive by 850 river cruisers.
Belgrade has a reputation for offering a vibrant nightlife; many clubs that are open until dawn can be found throughout the city. The most recognizable nightlife features of Belgrade are the barges (splav), spread along the banks of the Sava and Danube Rivers.
Belgrade nightlife on riverclubs.
Many weekend visitors—particularly from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Slovenia—prefer Belgrade nightlife to that of their own capitals, due to a perceived friendly atmosphere, great clubs and bars, cheap drinks, the lack of language difficulties, and the lack of restrictive night life regulation.
Famous alternative clubs include Akademija and the famed KST (Klub Studenata Tehnike), located in the basement of the University of Belgrade Faculty of Electrical Engineering. One of the most famous sites for alternative cultural happenings in the city is the SKC (Student Cultural Centre), located right across from Belgrade's highrise landmark, the Beograđanka. Concerts featuring famous local and foreign bands are often held at the center. SKC is also the site of various art exhibitions, as well as public debates and discussions.
Skadarlija, the city's old bohemian neighbourhood
A more traditional Serbian nightlife experience, accompanied by traditional music known as Starogradska (roughly translated as Old Town Music), typical of northern Serbia's urban environments, is most prominent in Skadarlija, the city's old bohemian neighborhood where the poets and artists of Belgrade gathered in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Skadar Street (the centre of Skadarlija) and the surrounding neighbourhood are lined with some of Belgrade's best and oldest traditional restaurants (called kafanas in Serbian), which date back to that period. At one end of the neighbourhood stands Belgrade's oldest beer brewery, founded in the first half of the 19th century. One of the city's oldest kafanas is the Znak pitanja.
The Times reported that Europe's best nightlife can be found in buzzing Belgrade. In the Lonely Planet "1000 Ultimate Experiences" guide of 2012, Belgrade was placed at the 1st spot among the top 10 party cities in the world.

It also borders Hungary, Serbia, and Moldova. It covers 238,391 square kilometres (92,043 sq mi) and has a temperate-continental climate. With its 19.9 million inhabitants, it is the seventh most populous member of the European Union. Its capital and largest city, Bucharest, is the sixth largest city in the EU.
The Danube River, which is Europe's second longest river after the Volga, rises in Germany and flows southeastwards for a distance of 2857 km course through ten countries before emptying in Romania's Danube Delta. Some of its 1075 km length bordering the country drains the whole of it. The Carpathian Mountains (the tallest peak is Moldoveanu at 2544 m, 8346 ft) cross Romania from the north to the southwest.
Modern Romania emerged within the territories of the ancient Roman province of Dacia, and was formed in 1859 through a personal union of the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. The new state, officially named Romania since 1866, gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877. At the end of World War I, Transylvania, Bukovina and Bessarabia united with the sovereign Kingdom of Romania. At the end of World War II, territories which today roughly correspond to the Republic of Moldova were occupied by the Soviet Union, and a few years later Romania became a socialist republic and member of the Warsaw Pact. After the 1989 Revolution, Romania began a transition back towards democracy and a capitalist market economy.
Following rapid economic growth in the 2000s, Romania has an economy predominantly based on services, and is a producer and net exporter of machines and electric energy, featuring companies like Automobile Dacia and OMV Petrom. Living standards have improved, and currently, Romania is an upper-middle income country with a high Human Development Index. It has been a member of NATO since 2004, and part of the European Union since 2007. Around 90% of the population identify themselves as Eastern Orthodox Christians, and are native speakers of Romanian, a Romance language. With a rich cultural history, Romania has been the home of influential artists, musicians, inventors and sportsmen, and features a variety of tourist attractions.

Nowadays big data seems to be everywhere; monstrous amounts of data to be piped through systems; to be digested by services; to be fed back into the circulation; for you to finally consume an individual view of the world. In times of cloud computing, putting your big data ideas into reality is no rocket science any more; even for small development teams with no data centre at hands.
In this session I will introduce you a promising approach on how to cope with big data projects the lean way:
Managing big data in the cloud bears a highly dynamic runtime behaviour; especially when costs matter. How to scale up and scale down your cloud resource consumption? Which technology stack works promisingly well? Which patterns and architectures are suitable? How to populate and organize your systems in this dynamic environment without loosing track? How to retain a clear view of your services' and systems' health condition?
By dissecting a case study in this session I'll introduce you a promising approach on how to tackle those challenges using the Java ecosystem, Amazon AWS cloud services and NoSQL databases; in an agile working environment; breaking down your architecture into subtle bits and pieces to just put them back together again.

About the Speech:
On 14 October 2011, Commissioner Fule presented the European Commission's Opinion on Serbia's EU membership application and stated that "on the basis of the progress achieved in reforms, co-operation with the International Court Tribunal for ex-Yugoslavia, and regional reconciliation, we have decided to recommend granting Serbia Candidate Status on the understanding that Belgrade re-engages in the dialogue with Kosovo and is moving swiftly to the implementation in good faith of agreements reached to date". He also stated that the EU proposes to open negotiations with Serbia as soon as it achieves further progress in normalising relations with Kosovo. Mr. Delic will talk about the progress of Serbia towards accession and the broader role Serbia can play in the Balkan region, including its relationship with Kosovo.
About the Speaker:
Bozidar Delic is the Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia with responsibility for European Integration. As former Minister of Finance from 2001-2003, he oversaw far-reaching reforms of the economy, including a massive reduction in the budget deficit and overall debt levels of Serbia. Before entering politics, he was a partner at McKinsey and a graduate of Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, where Jeffrey Sachs was his mentor. Mr Delic is extremely popular in Serbia and is included on the list of top 100 young leaders at Davos and Forbes.

صربيا - بلغراد / Belgrade - Serbia
صربيا - بلغراد / Belgrade - Serbia

-------------------------------------------------------
FOR THE END OF ERA OF FOSSIL FUELS

VISIT SERBIA - CITY OF BELGRADE
VISIT SERBIA - CITY OF BELGRADE
Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia. It is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. Its name translates to White city. The city proper has a population of over 2 million people.
One of the most important prehistoric cultures of Europe, the Vinča culture, evolved within the Belgrade area in the 6th millennium BC.

Welcome to Belgrade-Serbia
Belgrade is situated in South-Eastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula. City lies 116.75 metres (383.0 ft) above sea level and is located at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. The river waters surround it from three sides, and that is why since ancient times it has been the guardian of river passages. Because of its position it was properly called "the gate" of the Balkans, and "the door" to Central Europe.

Romania (Listeni/roʊˈmeɪniə/ roh-MAY-nee-ə; Romanian: România [romɨˈni.a] ( listen)) is a unitary semi-presidential republic located in Southeastern-Central Europe, bordering the Black Sea, between Bulgaria and Ukraine.

Panel discussion "United Through Adversity"
Panel discussion "United Through Adversity"
The current political climate has had a growing impact on artistic and institutional freedoms. In this situation it is important that art practitioners from Eastern Europe and Russia, drawing on accumulated experience from our shared socialist past, work together to examine the common “enemies” we share today. Are there new models and strategies of cultural production, collective work, and collaboration that we can recognize as effective? Expanding on one of the “lessons” from the exhibition, The potential for uniting through adversity, the curators, together with some of the participant artists, will share their perspectives.
Participants: Zdenka Badovinac, Director of Moderna galerija in Ljubljana (Slovenia), co-curator of Grammar of Freedom / Five Lessons; Luchezar Boyadjiev, artist, Bulgaria; Olga Egorova, artist, member of Chto delat group, Russia; Anatoly Osmolovsky, artist, Russia; Darinka Pop-Mitić, artist, Serbia; Bojana Piškur, co-curator of Grammar of Freedom / Five Lessons, curator at Moderna galerija; Igor Španjol, curator at Moderna galerija; Borut Vogelnik, artist, member of IRWIN group, Slovenia; Roman Uranjek, artist, member of IRWIN group, Slovenia.
