All that sun and balmy air coming in from the Atlantic means the locally produced food and drink has to be experienced to be believed. So you'll be glad the climate also offers countless opportunities for healthy outdoor exercise to burn the calories off.
Anyway, that's it for now. I can't sit here by the pool having breakfast all day ... I'd have no time to go for lunch on the beach.
Até mais!

Love Europe but think you can’t afford it? Think again. I recently spent some time in Portugal and was wowed by the low prices. In Portugal, you can enjoy a low cost of living similar to that in Latin America’s more developed countries… with all the benefits of European life thrown in.
For instance, what about a filling, sit-down lunch for maybe $15? You can grab a sandwich for less than $5 that’s big enough for two… but why bother? As in many Latin countries, lunch is generally a proper meal in Portugal, and you can get two courses, sometimes with beverage, starting from about $10. Or have dinner in a family-style restaurant starting from very little more. Like wine with that meal? No problem. You can get a glass of wine in many restaurants for $4 or so… or half a bottle for about $7. Portugal is a wine-producing country, after all, and the local product is good, plentiful, and inexpensive.
For buying your own groceries, prices are low in supermarkets, but you can also frequent traditional markets. Lisbon’s Mercado da Ribeira, right in central Lisbon, is a standout. Buy your fruits, veggies, and fish here, and catch lunch at one of the gourmet food stalls while you’re at it.
Many parts of Portugal have a mild climate, which keeps utility costs down. And, even in Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, you can rent an apartment long-term from about $600 a month. If you look around, you can even get a furnished place at that price.
Getting out and about in Portugal is easy and inexpensive, too. Trains, buses, and—in the cities—metro systems connect major destinations. International airports in Lisbon and Oporto connect you to the rest of Europe and beyond. And, as Portugal is a major tourist destination for other Europeans, you can even take advantage of low discount-airline fares from Lisbon, Oporto, and other destinations.
One potential downside to Portugal, of course, is the language: Relatively few foreigners speak Portuguese. Fortunately, many Portuguese do speak English, especially those in the larger cities (Lisbon and Oporto, for instance) and in the tourist areas. Even more of them speak or understand Spanish… so those high-school Spanish classes aren’t entirely wasted.
So if you’ve ever dreamed of a home in Europe, give Portugal a try.

Madeira, Portugal Travel Guide http://bit.ly/1dkv4Rz
Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Santana in Madeira, where tourist may believe that they'll see small triangle
shaped thatched housed painted with happy colors all over the island. Actually, these kinds of buildings are only typical in Santana and its immediate surroundings.
Visit Santana on Madeira Island, Portugal
The steep rocky slopes became a wide plateau at Santana. The terrace fields here are very suitable for vegetable and fruit growing and also a lot of willows are planted here. The twigs cut from them during spring are used for basket weaving. Tourist may believe that they'll see small triangle shaped thatched housed painted with happy colors all over the island. Actually these kinds of buildings are only typical in Santana and its immediate surroundings. The local authorities try to protect this small houses scattered about.
Some of them are already just for tourist purposes with small exhibitions or souvenir shops inside but some are still inhabited. As only boards and weeds are used as constructions materials, there's no bathroom in the house or any kitchen in order to avoid fires. Nowadays these facilities are located in a big tradition to the house. Traditionally the living room and the parental bedroom used to be on the ground floor while the children's rooms were upstairs. Considering the sizes, its not surprising that today, only lonely old people live in this huts. However in the vineyards above Santana these are also used as wine press houses or as weekend houses.
The Casa de Como is used to be homes for the poor, well to do people lived in simple houses. We can see many well houses of this kind even today above the Saint Laurence Fortress and in the old town. The really rich, especially the sugar barons, land owners and vineyard owners live on their property in noble houses arranged around a central court. Interestingly, these are quite similar to the luxurious palaces of the Latin American Sugar barons. Fountains often cooled the shady family in the courtyards, the common premises, the living room, library, music hall and dining hall open from here while from the gallery running around the first floor, the luxuries furnished rooms of the family members could be reached.
Some of these noble lodges called Quintal have been transformed into hotels in our days. The former public buildings represent two styles, the Manuel and the Baroque. The 15th Century when King Manuel the first came into the throne, a new architectural style formed all over Portugal. This was the version of the Gothic in which the most bearing feature was richly huge stone ornamentations. The themes, as they can bee seen in the churches in Lisbon and Agaves, were boating, discoveries and exotic sea creatures. Into this time and also later in constructing churches and public buildings carved wooden roofs and tile decorations of Moorish origin were very typical.
The similar way of exaggerated decorative Baroque followed the manual style. This is especially evident on the gold leaf covered main and inside in the churches and in the facades of the many municipal public buildings. The typical furniture on the island and in the 17th century was made of sugar crates. The sugar loving came from Brazil and was packed in reddish brown, leather hard mahogany boxes. The people on Madeira liked this kind of crates so much that they asked the local masters to make furniture from them. Decorated with rod iron straps and mosaics, today an old piece can cost a fortune. The mountains on Madeira are higher than 1,500—1,600 meters providing a good opportunity for para-gliding to see the best meeting panorama from a birds eye view.
Pico de Aurero, Poca de Neva, Pico de Aussies and Pau de Cera is suitable starting points for this sport as these peaks can be approached by car. The Camacha built on a plateau is famous for several things, the tower on the café on the main square looks like Big Ben in London and this is no coincidence. The English sportsman had the house built, there's a memorial plaque on its wall that the first football game in the island was played in 1975 while this English gentleman was the referee. From the tower and from the New Cap Tower next to it we can have a view all the way to the ocean, above the forest of terrace cultivated bay and eucalyptus trees.

Every Wednesday we present a new video, so join us to see the truth laid bare...
From afar the Earth seems calm, a blue sphere turning peacefully in space, but travel closer and you find a turbulent and terrifying place. An atmosphere where hurricanes and tornados are spawned, and below that a realm of volcanos and earthquakes.
Starting just before New Year's Day, on Boxing Day 2004, the year 2005 was the most disastrous on record, with hundreds of billions of pounds of losses and more than half a million deaths. This programme covers the litany of planetary catastrophes, from the extraordinary Boxing Day killer tsunami in the Indian Ocean, through the great Kashmir earthquake to Hurricane Katrina and the devastation it wrought on New Orleans, along with UK events, such as the Birmingham tornado, which reached the highest tornado category, yet miraculously killed no-one.
2005 saw an onslaught of epic-scale climate and geological events across the world, all caught on camera in the most spectacular fashion by professionals and amateurs alike. Using eye-witness footage, interviews with survivors and rescuers and analysis from geological and weather specialists, this documentary charts the incredible natural events of a year where almost every month was affected by a natural disaster.
At that time it was the hottest year on record, and the stormiest, people on every continent were affected in some way by the year’s disasters. World leading scientists and climatologists speculate whether the events have been triggered by a real shift in the earth's climatic systems.
Some of the natural disasters covered in this documentary :
Indian Ocean Earthquake and Asian Tsunami
The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea megathrust earthquake that occurred on 26th December with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The earthquake was caused when the Indian Plate was subducted by the Burma Plate and triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing over 230,000 people in fourteen countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 metres high.
Maharashtra Floods
The 2005 Maharashtra floods refers to the flooding of many parts of the Indian state of Maharashtra including large areas of the metropolis Mumbai a city located on the coast of the Arabian Sea, on the western coast of India, in which at least 5,000 people died.
Birmingham Tornado
The Birmingham tornado was one of the strongest tornadoes recorded in the United Kingdom in nearly 30 years, occurring on 28th July 2005 in the suburbs of Birmingham. The tornado uprooted an estimated 1,000 trees, removed the roofs of buildings, picked up and deposited cars and caused other damage during its short existence.
European Floods
The 2005 European floods hit mainly Romania, Switzerland, Austria and Germany, as well as several other countries in Central Europe and Eastern Europe during August. The disaster came at a time when Portugal was suffering from intense forest fires which left 15 dead.
Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina was the deadliest and most destructive Atlantic tropical cyclone of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. It is the costliest natural disaster, as well as one of the deadliest hurricanes, in the history of the United States. At least 1,833 people died in the hurricane and subsequent floods. The most significant number of deaths occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana, which flooded as the levee system catastrophically failed.
Kashmir Earthquake
The Kashmir earthquake occurred on 8th October 2005 and was centred in the Pakistan administered Kashmir near the city of Muzaffarabad, and also affected the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. It registered a moment magnitude of 7.6. The government of Pakistan's official death toll was 75,000. The severity of the damage caused by the earthquake is attributed to severe upthrust, coupled with poor construction.

David Attenborough: The Truth About Climate Change (BBC - Part 1)
A two part documentary presented by Sir David Attenborough - The Truth About Climate Change. Like us https://www.facebook.com/CarbonControl Follow us https://twitter.com/CarbonControl
Some extraordinary phenomena have taken place in recent times; Hurricane Katrina, the heat wave of 2003, polar bears swimming in search of ice and vast swarms of insects enveloping an African village. But are these isolated incidents or are they omens of a greater global change?
Sir David discovers that the world is warming at an unprecedented rate, and finds out why this is now far beyond any normal allowance for cyclical fluctuation. But are humans to blame? These changes are already in motion whatever we do now, but Sir David believes that we may be able to act to prevent a catastrophe. People around the world are having to adapt their way of life as the climate changes; the Inuit in the Arctic whose hunting is now limited, the Pacific island inhabitants forced to move as their homes disappear beneath the waves, and the Siberian homes slowly sinking into the permafrost. Sir David investigates some of the possible scenarios for the future, including rising sea-levels, insect plagues and an increase in diseases.

LISBON WORLD TRAVEL GUIDE Discovery Tourism Vacation full documentary
is the capital and the largest city of Portugal, with a population of 552,700 within its administrative limits in an area of 100.05 km².Its urban area extends beyond the city's administrative limits with a population of around 2.7 million people[citation needed], being the 11th-most populous urban area in the European Union. About 2.8 million people live in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (which represents approximately 27% of the country's population). It is the largest westernmost city located in continental Europe, as well as the westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. Lisbon lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus.
Lisbon is recognised as a global city because of its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education and tourism. It is one of the major economic centres on the continent, with a growing financial sector and one of the largest container ports on Europe's Atlantic coast. Lisbon Portela Airport serves over 18 million passengers annually, as of 2014,and the motorway network and the high-speed rail system of Alfa Pendular link the main cities of Portugal. The city is the 7th-most-visited city in Southern Europe, after Istanbul, Rome, Barcelona, Madrid, Athens and Milan, with 1,740,000 tourists in 2009. The Lisbon region contributes with the highest GDP PPP per capita of any other region in Portugal. It also ranks as the 10th highest GDP of metropolitan areas in the EU amounting to 110 billion euros and thus €39,375 per capita, 40% higher than the average European Union's GDP per capita. The city occupies 32nd place of highest gross earnings in the world. Most of the headquarters of multinationals in the country are located in the Lisbon area. It is also the political centre of the country, as seat of Government and residence of the Head of State.
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, the Crusaders under Afonso Henriques reconquered the city and since then it has been a major political, economic and cultural centre of Portugal. Unlike most capital cities, Lisbon's status as the capital of Portugal has never been granted or confirmed officially – by statute or in written form. Its position as the capital has formed through constitutional convention, making its position as de facto capital a part of the Constitution of Portugal.
Lisbon enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Among all the metropolises in Europe, it has the warmest winters, with average temperatures 15 °C (59 °F) during the day and 8 °C (46 °F) at night from December to February. The typical summer season lasts about six months, from May to October, although also in April temperatures sometimes reach around 25 °C (77.0 °F).

Friday, April 3, 2009
Featuring Glenn Greenwald, Attorney and Best-selling Author; with comments by Peter Reuter, Department of Criminology, University of Maryland; moderated by Tim Lynch, Director, Project on Criminal Justice, Cato Institute.
In 2001, Portugal began a remarkable policy experiment, decriminalizing all drugs, including cocaine and heroin. Some predicted disastrous results — that drug addiction rates would soar and the country would become a haven for "drug tourists." Now that several years have passed, policy experts can study the results. In a new paper for the Cato Institute, attorney and author Glenn Greenwald closely examines the Portugal experiment and concludes that the doomsayers were wrong. There is now a widespread consensus in Portugal that decriminalization has been a success. The debate in Portugal has shifted rather dramatically to minor adjustments in the existing arrangement. There is no real debate about whether drugs should once again be criminalized. Join us for a discussion about Glenn Greenwald's field research in Portugal and what lessons his findings may hold for drug policies in other countries.
Notably, decriminalization has become increasingly popular in Portugal since 2001. Except for some far-right politicians, very few domestic political factions are agitating for a repeal of the 2001 law. And while there is a widespread perception that bureaucratic changes need to be made to Portugal's decriminalization framework to make it more efficient and effective, there is no real debate about whether drugs should once again be criminalized. More significantly, none of the nightmare scenarios touted by preenactment decriminalization opponents — from rampant increases in drug usage among the young to the transformation of Lisbon into a haven for "drug tourists" — has occurred.
The political consensus in favor of decriminalization is unsurprising in light of the relevant empirical data. Those data indicate that decriminalization has had no adverse effect on drug usage rates in Portugal, which, in numerous categories, are now among the lowest in the EU, particularly when compared with states with stringent criminalization regimes. Although postdecriminalization usage rates have remained roughly the same or even decreased slightly when compared with other EU states, drug-related pathologies — such as sexually transmitted diseases and deaths due to drug usage — have decreased dramatically. Drug policy experts attribute those positive trends to the enhanced ability of the Portuguese government to offer treatment programs to its citizens — enhancements made possible, for numerous reasons, by decriminalization.
This report will begin with an examination of the Portuguese decriminalization framework as set forth in law and in terms of how it functions in practice. Also examined is the political climate in Portugal both pre- and postdecriminalization with regard to drug policy, and the impetus that led that nation to adopt decriminalization.
The data show that, judged by virtually every metric, the Portuguese decriminalization framework has been a resounding success. Within this success lie self-evident lessons that should guide drug policy debates around the world.
Glenn Greenwald is a constitutional lawyer and a contributing writer at Salon. He has authored several books, including A Tragic Legacy (2007) and How Would a Patriot Act? (2006).

Golden Residence Permit of Portugal - European Passport - Climate

Sat here by our pool having breakfast is a good time to tell you a bit about the weather here in Portugal.
The experts say the climate is Mediterranean. (They can't be experts on maps because we're bloomin' miles away from the Med!) What they mean is the winters are mild and the summers are hot and dry. It's pretty much the same for the whole country, although it doesn't get quite so hot in the north, and high up in the mountains you get enough winter snow for skiing.
The average annual temperature is 15 Celsius in the north and 18 in the south. And while the north gets around 1,600 sunshine hours a year, the south gets up to 3,300. That's some of the highest in Europe.
Até mais!

Portugal. The 5 and half thousand square meters large southern part of the once proud colonial empire is Algarve, bathing all year in the sun. From the hilltops, moor forts look down on to the surroundings. In the old towns narrow roads lead up to the magnificent Manuel-style temples. The buildings are ornamented by Azulejos, moor painted tiles. The monuments and statues summon adventurers and explorers: Magellan and Vasco De Gama. The country is full of fishing villages, palm trees, vine arbours, olive tree orchards, and orange gardens. The Playa de Rocha and the other sandy beaches are surrounded by large cliffs, stone archs and lagoons. On the hill of Moniche we travel among pine trees and para oaks. From the lighthouse of the Saint Vincent cape we can only see the endless Atlantic Ocean, which the medieval man thought to be the end of the world.

Travel video about destination Porto in Portugal.
Porto is the second largest city in Portugal and is the city from which the country derived its name. At its centre is the Praca Da Liberdade a large square that is guarded by a statue of King Dom Pedro the Fourth. The Torre Dos Clerigos is the symbol of Porto and in the middle of the 18th century was built on a rock at the city's highest point. Of particular interest is the remarkable external wall toward the east that is decorated with a huge example of the Portuguese art form known as 'azuelejos'. The tidal and deep-cut river valley of the Douro is spanned by four bridges of which the most impressive is the iron-built, Ponte Dom Louis. The Frenchman, Gustave Eiffel, constructed this gigantic twin level bridge that connects Porto with its sister town, Vila Nova De Gaia. Porto is a cultural capital of Europe whose glorious spirit of the past has managed to survive the centuries.

Travel video about destination Porto in Portugal.
Situated in the north of Portugal, Porto is a cultural capital of Europe and birthplace of the nation.
The Torre Dos Clerigos is the symbol of the city and was built in the middle of the 18th century on a rock at the city's most elevated point. Two hundred twenty-five steps lead to a stunning view across the picturesque old harbor town and its carpet of red rooftops that nestle against the city's hills.
Porto has one of the most beautiful markets in Europe that contains a large inner courtyard completely encircled by arcades.
The narrow, deep river valley of the Douro is spanned by 5 bridges of which the most impressive is the Ponte Dom Louis. The Frenchman, Gustave Eiffel, constructed the gigantic two level bridge that connects Porto with its sister town, Vila Nova De Gaia.
Five bridges connect the banks of the River Douro where 2 of them are monuments that date back to the Industrial Revolution. The river has always been the city's lifeline and a trading route to the whole world. The entire river valley was designated as a vine growing area because it is where the world famous port wine is grown.
With all of its picturesque districts, including its Baroque splendor and the palatial houses of its elite, Porto has truly survived the march of time.

Madeira - a part of Portugal - is an island near the coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. The island has a mild climate and its main assets are its legendary flowers and natural beauties. Beside the levadas - watering canals – we can walk through Madeira among the banana plantations, vineyards, sugar cane fields, eucalyptus and laurel forests. The landscape is full of volcanic stones, basalt rocks, deep gorges, black-sanded beaches and mountaintops hardly visible in the mist. CATO - Portugal Drug Decimalization Report
