Kenya university attack: Islamist militants storm Garissa University College, at least 15 dead

At least 15 people have been killed as militants from Islamist group al-Shabab stormed Garissa University College in Kenya at around 5 a.m. Thursday. Many students were in their dorms sleeping when the shooting started. According to witnesses, gunmen were heard asking students whether they were Muslims or Christians. Christians were shot on the spot. Other students were held hostage. Muslims and non-Muslims were held in different groups. Students attending morning prayers at the university mosque were not attacked. Kenyan forces have surrounded the university and have cleared at least three dorms, with the militants still occupying one. At least 500 students are still unaccounted for. Officials said one militant was arrested when he tried to flee the scene. At least 15 people were killed and more than 60 injured. The park is 39,206 hectares (392 km2; 151 sq mi)[1] in size at the core of an 8,000 square kilometres (3,100 sq mi) ecosystem that spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border. The local people are mainly Maasai, but people from other parts of the country have settled there attracted by the successful tourist-driven economy and intensive agriculture along the system of swamps that makes this low-rainfall area (average 350 mm (14 in)) one of the best wildlife-viewing experiences in the world with 400 species of birds including water birds, pelicans, kingfishers, crakes, hammerkops and 47 types of raptor. The park protects two of the five main swamps, and includes a dried-up Pleistocene lake and semi-arid vegetation. 240 kilometers (150 miles) southeast from the capital city Nairobi, Amboseli National Park is the second most popular national park in Kenya after Maasai Mara National Reserve. History ================ In 1883, Joseph Thompson was the first European to penetrate the feared Maasai region known as Empusel (meaning 'salty, dusty place' in Maa). He, too, was astonished by the fantastic array of wildlife and the contrast between the arid areas of the dry-lake bed and the oasis of the swamps, a contrast that persists today. Amboseli was set aside as the 'Southern Reserve' for Maasai in 1906 but returned to local control as a Game Reserve in 1948. Gazetted a National Park in 1974 to protect the core this unique ecosystem, it was declared a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve in 1991. The park earned $3.5 m (€2.9 m) in 2005. On 29 September 2005, Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki declared that control of the park should pass from the Kenya Wildlife Service to the Olkejuado County Council and the Maasai tribe. Some observers saw this as a political favour in advance of a vote on a new Kenyan constitution: legal challenges are currently in court. The degazetting would divert park admission fees directly to the County Council with shared benefits to the Maasai immediately surrounding the park. Fauna ========== The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants.[3] Other attractions of the park include opportunities to meet Maasai and visit a Maasai village. The park also offers spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Amboseli offers some of the best opportunities to see African animals because its vegetation is sparse due to the long dry months. Amboseli National Park is home to wild animals, which include the African elephant, cape buffalo, impala, lion, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest among other African animals. There is also a host of Kenyan birds, both large and small, to see if you keep your eyes open and stop at every sighting. The park has several rules to protect the wildlife: do not get out of your vehicle, except at designated spots; do not harass the animals in any way; keep to the tracks; no off-road driving; and animals always have the right of way. The roads in Amboseli have a loose surface of volcanic soil that is dusty in the dry season and impassable in the wet season.

Muslims have lived in Kenya for centuries and today make up about 11 percent of the country's population. These communities live on the coast in cities like Mombasa - where nearly half of the city's inhabitants are Muslim - and in the country's northeast. Ramadan in Kenya meets Muslims living in Mombasa, Kisumu and Nairobi and captures their lives and culture in their homes, at work and in their places of worship. They talk about what aspects of Ramadan mean the most to them. Aseef Akram is a 25-year-old halal butcher living in Mombasa. He talks about the "spirit of Ramadan" in the city, the culture of openness towards those who are fasting, and about breaking that fast with the coconut dishes of the region. "For me [during Ramadan], I tend to be most spiritually connected to my God, my creator," says Akram. In the western city of Kisumu, Fauza Asya Kombo picks and sells bananas for a living and is raising five children on her own after her husband died. Although earning a livelihood can be a struggle, she says, "When we've finished [iftar], we give any leftover bread to our neighbours. Food doesn't go to waste ... Wasting leads to non-belief." Arafat bin Talebis, a sixth grader at a shelter for orphans, talks about the peace he gains from his Quranic studies and the importance of his faith in his life. "To me, the month of Ramadan acts like a guide. If I've made mistakes before Ramadan, I'll avoid making them once Ramadan starts," he says. From the Quran memorisation competitions which attract children studying in madrassas in Tanzania and Uganda - to Akram's family using the opportunity to eat together to break their fast, Ramadan in Kenya experiences the spirituality, traditions and significance of the holy month through the eyes of individuals who observe it.

They arrived initially as traders, later branching into hardware and glass, and then into real estate and construction. The Dawoodi Bohra number some 6,500-8,000 in Kenya overall, with some 2,500 in Nairobi and under 3,000 in Mombassa. Millions of Muslims around the world are observing Eid al-Adha, or the 'Festival of Sacrifice', on Tuesday, one of Islam's most poignant religious holidays. The holiday marks what Muslims believe is Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his own son as an act of obedience to God. At the last minute, they believe, God intervened, and gave Ibrahim a ram to sacrifice instead. In Turkey, tens of thousands of Syrians taking shelter at the Kilis refugee camp woke at dawn to take part in the traditional morning Eid prayers. In Kilis town proper, goats, lambs and rams were prepped for sacrifice in an event organised by Turkey's Ministry of Religious Affairs. Traditionally, Muslims sacrifice an animal at Eid and share the meat with their families, neighbours, and people less fortunate than themselves. Syrian refugee families were also among those fed this year. "Kilis is important for us because there are about 80,000 Syrians who were forced to leave Syria who now live here. And in an effort to assuage their pain, even if only for a while, we spend the holidays among them," said Halil Aktas from the Ministry of Religious Affairs. He said 420 animals were sacrificed this year and they hoped to feed around 700 families from the meat. In East Africa, hundreds of Kenyan Muslims gathered for early morning prayers in Nairobi. Community leader Imam Mohammed Salim spoke at the gathering on the importance of unity between both Muslims and non-Muslims. After the recent attack on Nairobi's Westgate mall by al-Qaida-linked militant group al-Shabab, that saw more than 60 people killed and over 100 injured, peaceful relations between the Muslim and Christian communities in Kenya looked strained. However, Muslim worshippers are still condemning the attack and are thankful to Kenyans, Muslims and non-Muslims, for maintaining peace and coming together to help one another in the nations hour of need. "Let me thanks all the Kenyans, Muslims and non-Muslims, specifically non-Muslims, because it is as if it was implanted, or it was planned, so that there will be disunity between the Muslims and the non-Muslims, but that I find that on the contrary, people have come together, the Muslims and the non-Muslims," the imam said. In other parts of the city, goats were seen hanging from hooks as they were slaughtered and skinned in preparation for the festival. "Today is Eid and that is why I am slaughtering this goat. We are celebrating," said Abdi Mohammed, as he butchered a goat. In West Africa, Nigerian Muslims in Lagos gathered at the Central Mosque for prayers. Local chief Rabiu Danjuma said they were praying that God expose the country's enemies so it can again become "great". In Kosovo, in the western town of Prizren, where Islamic tradition is strictly observed, Hezer Haliti and his family sacrificed a ram in observance of the holiday. Aided by his brother, Veli, Hezer covered the ram's face with a cloth and then sacrificed the animal. The slaughter was performed in front of his young son, Daris, and nephew Omar. Veli Haliti said the practice is passed on from generation to generation. "It's a Muslim tradition. We've learned it from our father. For over two decades in this house the same butcher has performed the same ceremony and slaughters a sacrificial ram," Haliti said. Elsewhere in the city, celebrants gathered at the Mehmed Pasha Mosque for prayers in the courtyard. Many then go to graveyards where they pray over the graves of their families and friends. Kosovo is considered secular although the overwhelming majority of its population of 1.8 million are Muslims. But as Uhuru Kenyatta launches a battle for Muslim hearts and minds, his security forces must first reckon with the deep mistrust among ethnic Somali Muslims in the country's northeast regions bordering Somalia. Kenyatta also faces an uphill task in reforming the violent ways of troops on the ground. A day before the president spoke, a Reuters reporter saw a soldier in Garissa lashing at a crowd of Muslim women with a long stick. "We live in fear," said Barey Bare, one of a dozen veiled Somali-Kenyan women targeted by the soldier. "The military are a threat and al-Shabab are a threat. We are in between." Without the cooperation of local people like Bare, experts say, Kenya will struggle to glean vital, on-the-ground intelligence to stop crude but lethal assaults by Somalia's al-Shabab militants. Winning favor with Muslim communities near Somalia has been made more urgent by al-Shabab's switch in tactics to target Kenya's frontier regions near the porous 700-kilometer border. Al-Shabab has killed more than 400 people in two years, including 67 during an assault on Nairobi's Westgate mall in 2013. "Kenyans can't afford to build a wall with Somalia, so intelligence from local sources is the best approach," a Western diplomat said. "But people in villages won't inform if Kenyan soldiers steal or hit women." Brutality by troops disputed Kenyan Defense Forces spokesman David Obonyo denied the troops had a track record of brutality against Muslims, who make up about 10 percent of Kenya's 44 million people. "I don't see why we would harm our own citizens in Kenya. We are there to protect them," he said. Analysts and diplomats say Kenya's top brass are now aware that heavy-handed security tactics can cripple intelligence gathering. Mass security sweeps also breed radicalization and help al-Shabab portray itself as the protector of Muslims in Kenya, Muslim groups say. "In the upper echelons, especially in the intelligence department, there are constant warnings to police that these mass arrests are counterproductive," said Rashid Abdi, a Horn of Africa security analyst. Though the group has lost swaths of territory and key sources of income in its native Somalia, it can still strike at soft targets in Kenya by using a handful of fighters with AK-47 rifles and grenades. Local knowledge also helps. One of the four fighters who stormed the Garissa college was an ethnic Somali whose father was a Kenyan government official, intensifying fears about homegrown jihadis. Five other Kenyans have been arrested since. "Radicalization has grown and become a national problem rather than a regional problem," said Ali Roba, the governor of Mandera, a region also targeted by militants. Urging Muslims to do more to root out jihadi sympathizers within their community, Kenyatta said the attacks by the Somali militants threaten economic progress in their heartlands. "I urge all my brothers and sisters in the affected regions, and across the country, to not allow those who hide and abet the terrorists to compromise and even destroy the development that is fast growing in your area," said Kenyatta, who replaced his intelligence and police chief following attacks. Joseph Nkaissery, appointed interior minister in December, has impressed diplomats with his desire to use more modern methods to counter radicalization. Suspicion of security services But to get Muslims on board, especially the 2.4 million ethnic Somalis living in Kenya, the authorities will have to address their deep suspicion of the security services. Many say they carry extra "shakedown" cash for bribes. "Their interest is just money. You can't go to the government to complain. Nothing will happen," said Saddam Hassan, 23, who had to pay a 20,000-shilling ($216) bribe to be freed after four days in custody last April. Diplomats say coming months could be key to see if the new leadership wholeheartedly embraces a new strategy or reverts to bad old ways.

JAYAPURA, Indonesia (AP) -- Rescue officials say a search plane has spotted the wreckage of an Indonesian passenger plane that went missing with 54 people onboard. There was no immediate word if there were any survivors from the crash, which happened in bad weather on Sunday in Indonesia's mountainous easternmost province of Papua. Officials said the wreckage was spotted about 12 kilometers (7 miles) from its destination of Oksibil ... ....
