The park is 39,206 hectares (392 km2; 151 sq mi)[1] in size at the core of an 8,000 square kilometres (3,100 sq mi) ecosystem that spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border. The local people are mainly Maasai, but people from other parts of the country have settled there attracted by the successful tourist-driven economy and intensive agriculture along the system of swamps that makes this low-rainfall area (average 350 mm (14 in)) one of the best wildlife-viewing experiences in the world with 400 species of birds including water birds, pelicans, kingfishers, crakes, hammerkops and 47 types of raptor. The park protects two of the five main swamps, and includes a dried-up Pleistocene lake and semi-arid vegetation. 240 kilometers (150 miles) southeast from the capital city Nairobi, Amboseli National Park is the second most popular national park in Kenya after Maasai Mara National Reserve. History ================ In 1883, Joseph Thompson was the first European to penetrate the feared Maasai region known as Empusel (meaning 'salty, dusty place' in Maa). He, too, was astonished by the fantastic array of wildlife and the contrast between the arid areas of the dry-lake bed and the oasis of the swamps, a contrast that persists today. Amboseli was set aside as the 'Southern Reserve' for Maasai in 1906 but returned to local control as a Game Reserve in 1948. Gazetted a National Park in 1974 to protect the core this unique ecosystem, it was declared a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve in 1991. The park earned $3.5 m (€2.9 m) in 2005. On 29 September 2005, Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki declared that control of the park should pass from the Kenya Wildlife Service to the Olkejuado County Council and the Maasai tribe. Some observers saw this as a political favour in advance of a vote on a new Kenyan constitution: legal challenges are currently in court. The degazetting would divert park admission fees directly to the County Council with shared benefits to the Maasai immediately surrounding the park. Fauna ========== The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants.[3] Other attractions of the park include opportunities to meet Maasai and visit a Maasai village. The park also offers spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Amboseli offers some of the best opportunities to see African animals because its vegetation is sparse due to the long dry months. Amboseli National Park is home to wild animals, which include the African elephant, cape buffalo, impala, lion, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest among other African animals. There is also a host of Kenyan birds, both large and small, to see if you keep your eyes open and stop at every sighting. The park has several rules to protect the wildlife: do not get out of your vehicle, except at designated spots; do not harass the animals in any way; keep to the tracks; no off-road driving; and animals always have the right of way. The roads in Amboseli have a loose surface of volcanic soil that is dusty in the dry season and impassable in the wet season.

They are stunning, with their white sand, palm trees, and cool Indian Ocean water! 7 - Kayak the beautiful coastal waters with a tour operator. 8 - Tanzania has two of the best Stone Age sites in the world: Isimila Gorge (near Iringa) and the earliest known examples of human art among the rock paintings, near Kolo, north of Dodoma -- some of which are reckoned to be around 30,000 years old. 9 - Kilimanjaro is one of Tanzania's main attractions. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. Many visitors come to Tanzania to summit this great mountain. The main peak is estimated to be 5895m high making it a real challenge for mountaineers.

Fantastica Nicole Reina è ancora una giornata-record all’Arena di Milano. A cadere stavolta, nel corso dei campionati provinciali milanesi Assoluti dei 10.000 metri validi anche come tappa del circuito Don Kenya Run (nell’occasione grazie al Comitato Provinciale FIDAL Milano è stata aperta la partecipazione alle categorie Allievi e Allieve, abitualmente impegnate fino ai 3000 metri piani nel programma tecnico delle gare in pista), l’atleta del CUS Pro Patria Milano abbatte il 36:10.3 manuale realizzato da Orietta Mancia (AS Frascati) il 1° settembre 1985. Reina dà una vera e propria spallata al precedente limite italiano: 1’50” di progresso per un 34:20.32 (peraltro “chiamato” dal 16:19.16 sui 5000 dello scorso 19 settembre) che rappresenta anche la terza prestazione nazionale Assoluta 2014 dopo il 32:25.76 di Veronica Inglese e il 34:12.95 di Claudia Pinna. Dopo i primi quattro chilometri in scia alle compagne di allenamento e pacemaker per l’occasione Maria Cristina Roscalla (CUS Pro Patria Milano) e Laura Bottini (CUS Pisa Atl. Cascina) la mezzofondista di Novate Milanese fa tutto da sola: passaggio ai 5000 in 17:17 (2000 in 6:54, 3000 in 10:21) e seconda metà gara da 17:03, per un ultimo 1000 in 3:15. « In una gara tirata poteva correre anche sotto i 34’, ma va bene così: Nicole chiude il biennio da allieva con 10 titoli italiani e limiti nazionali in sei distanze individuali» il commento a caldo del coach Giorgio Rondelli. L’allieva di Giorgio Rondelli aggiunge così la MPI dei 10.000 al lungo elenco di limiti nazionali Allieve già firmato. Sono infatti addirittura 11 le migliori prestazioni nazionali Under 18 fatte segnare da Nicole, nata agonisticamente nella Pol. Novate: 3000 metri indoor (due volte), 2000 metri siepi, 3000 metri siepi (tre volte), 5000 metri (due volte), 20’ di corsa, staffetta 4x1500 e , appunto, 10.000 metri. Reina è campionessa italiana in carica di 2000 siepi e 3000 piani in pista, cross e corsa su strada, titoli che aveva già vinto anche nel 2013 (con l’unica differenza nella distanza del tricolore su strada: 10 km nel 2013, 6 km nel 2014); a questi vanno affiancati anche il titolo Assoluto 2013 sui 3000 siepi proprio all’Arena e l’ro con il CUS Pro Patria nelle staffette di cross.

Kenya respecteerde niet iedere blanke hulpverlener (video/audio) Van Halsteren naar Hola in Kenya (afl. nr.62) “Van Erf en Akker” Kenya respecteerde niet iedere blanke hulpverlener We ontdekten destijds dat niet iedere blanke hulpverlener die naar Kenya was gekomen daar ook door de lokale bevolking met open armen werd ontvangen. Vooral sommige leden van het Amerikaanse “Peace Corps” moesten het ontgelden. Speciaal ook vanwege de manier waarop zij zich presenteerden. Vaak eigenwijs en gespeend van enige ervaring . Daarbij kwam dan nog hun uiterlijk en ook de manier van kleding. Lange haren, veel te korte broeken en vettige baarden. Maar ook sommige mensen die door de Stichting Nederlandse Vrijwilligers (SNV) waren uitgezonden vielen negatief op door hun gedrag en uiterlijk. Een koffer vol met “geiten wollen sokken” en veel illusies en veel te hoge verwachtingen. De Kenyaan keek er naar en dacht er het zijne van. De beleefdheid van de Kenyaan verhinderde dat de luchtfietsers uit de USA en Europa tot de orde werden geroepen en met beide voeten op de grond kwamen te staan. Kritiek was er ook op de hulpverleners die veel te kort werden uitgezonden naar bijv. Kenya of welk ontwikkelingsland dan ook. Men keek een beetje smalend naar deze “experts”. “Het eerste jaar zijn ze bezig om de situatie te verkennen en naar geschikte huisvesting te zoeken en leuke ontspanning te ontdekken en dan in het tweede jaar beginnen ze al weer te denken aan hun vertrek. Dan zoeken ze alweer naar een baan in het thuisland en bekommeren ze zich maar weinig meer om wat er op dat moment speelt in het hulpbehoevende land”. Daarnaast waren deze "expats" meestal zeer goed betaald en voorzien van prima en luxe huisvesting met daarbij een kok, een dienstmeisje, een tuinjongen en ook nog een nachtwaker. Daar stond tegenover dat de” SNV er” en de “Peace Corps” mensen meestal in eenvoudige behuizing woonden en juist daardoor weer te weinig respect afdwongen omdat ze teveel “kijk eens hoe gewoon ik ben” mentaliteit ten toon spreiden. We hebben het hierboven over de uitwassen van de ontwikkelingshulp gehad en het misprijzen dat daarvoor in het ontvangende land werd geuit. In grote tegenstelling daartegenover waren en zijn de missionarissen en zendelingen die vanaf het eerste uur werkzaam waren ( zijn) in dergelijke landen. Zij leefden sober en volledig dienstbaar aan het volk en oogsten daarvoor diep respect en grote waardering. Ofschoon zij het woord van God verkondigden verleenden zij vooral ook veel directe hulp aan de behoeftigen. Het is niet overdreven om te zeggen dat zij in feite de meest onbaatzuchtige ontwikkelingshulp verrichtten die er denkbaar was. Heel vaak onder de meest moeilijke omstandigheden! Nu in 2015 heeft een land als Kenya geen behoefte meer aan de meeste basis “deskundigen”vanuit de USA en Europa want er is een overvloed aan kennis van de eigen bevolking beschikbaar. Het zijn nu vooral de Chinezen die hulp bieden en daarbij geen lastige vragen stellen over “mensenrechten” en eerlijke verdeling van lusten en lasten.De Chinezen gaan uit van het principe “voor wat hoort wat” dus ze hopen er ook beter van te worden zodat het mes aan twee kanten sneed.

Ook in Kenya is de landbouw afhankelijk van het weer (video/audio) Van Halsteren naar Hola in Kenya (afl. nr.60) “Van Erf en Akker” Ook in Kenya is de landbouw afhankelijk van het weer We hebben ook in Kenya te maken met het weer als het op de teelt van katoen aankomt. We kunnen kunstmatig water geven via de irrigatiekanalen. Dat kunnen we prima doseren en aanpassen aan de omstandigheden. Maar dan komt er ineens onverwacht veel regen en dat stoort de planning. Hoe gek het ook klinkt want je zou zeggen regen heb je nodig voor de gewassen in dit droge regenarme gebied. We zitten echter midden in de onkruidbestrijdingsperiode. Dat onkruid moet met de hand worden verwijderd. Met handgereedschap. Maar wanneer het zo nat is en blijft groeit het onkruid achter je rug gewoon weer aan. De boeren in het project kunnen het op zeker moment niet meer de baas en hebben dan de neiging om het project te ontvluchten want ze zien aankomen dat ze een misoogst gaan krijgen. Dat betekent geen inkomsten maar wel onkosten die betaald moeten worden. De deelname aan het irrigatieproject is niet gratis. De boeren moeten betalen voor de grondbewerking, het zaaizaad, de gewasbeschermingsmiddelen en het irrigatiewater. Wanneer de katoenopbrengst goed is dan kunnen de kosten daarvan ruimschoots betaald worden en blijft er nog een leuk bedrag over als “winst” De boeren die hier uit het Tana River gebied komen hebben altijd de ruimte om het project te verlaten en thuis langs de oevers van rivier wat noodzakelijke gewassen te verbouwen voor eigen gebruik. Ze vertrekken met achterlating van hun schulden. We hebben hier geen incassobureaus die ze achter hun broek kan zitten om alsnog te betalen. Ze zijn vaak ook niet meer te vinden en als we ze al vinden dan is het dat je van een kale kip geen veren kan plukken. Anders ligt het voor de landloze boeren die van elders uit Kenya komen. Zij hebben geen keuze want thuis valt ook niks te halen dan armoe en nog eens armoe. Ze doen ook beter hun best op het project en doen het in de meeste gevallen goed. Bovendien zijn de meesten van de Kikuyu stam uit centraal Kenya en die staan bekend om hun vlijt, werklust en handelsgeest. Het weer speelt ons dus ook parten in de bedrijfsvoering van het project. Net als de boeren in Nederland hebben we ons maar te schikken in de grillen van het weer. Daar komt wel bij dat we er ook op een andere manier last van hebben want wanneer de opbrengst van de katoen tegenvalt dan kunnen de geldschieters die het project ondersteunen besluiten om hun steun te beëindigen. Leuke mensen uit ons eigen dorp die we in Kenya mochten ontmoeten (video/audio) Van Halsteren naar Hola in Kenya (afl. nr.59) “Van Erf en Akker” Leuke mensen uit ons eigen dorp die we in Kenya mochten ontmoeten We kregen bericht dat Martien en To, een bevriend echtpaar van onze ouders, op vakantie naar Kenya ging. Ze zouden eerst een safari gaan doen en in de bekende wildparken van het land proberen de “grote vijf” (olifant, buffel, leeuw, luipaard en neushoorn) te spotten en nog veel andere in het wild levende dieren. Maar ze hadden ook het plan een weekje te relaxen in het Lawfords Hotel in Malindi aan de Indische Oceaan en ze zouden het leuk vinden om ons te ontmoetten. Dat vonden wij ook en dus hebben we voor een paar dagen even alles aan de kant gezet en zijn we over een goed begaanbare weg deze keer ijlings in onze Landrover naar Malindi gereden. We hadden ook Miriam ons kindermeisje van de Malakotte stam meegenomen om tijdens het verblijf met de Halsternaren ons wat vrijer te kunnen bewegen terwijl zij op de kinderen zou passen.. We hadden haar nog maar kort in dienst en ze was nog nooit uit haar dorp geweest waardoor ze van de ene verbazing in de andere viel. Ze was een dochter van een van de boeren in het project. Vooral toen ze als moslima uit een bushdorpje die moderne witte Europese vrouwen in badpakken en bikini’s zag luieren aan de rand van het zwembad in ons hotel. De ontmoeting met Martien en To was hartelijk en ook het bevriende echtpaar dat met hen meereisde was leuk. Het was een beetje vreemd om hier zomaar ineens een dorpsgenoot aan te treffen die heerlijk onbezorgd aan het vakantie vieren was. Een man in goeden doen die het met zijn aannemers/bouwbedrijf ver had geschopt en ook in de lokale dorpspolitiek een belangrijke rol speelde. We hoorden de laatste nieuwtjes en roddels uit het dorp. We aten en we dronken samen en genoten van de leuke tijd. Ze wilden ook heel graag wat van de omgeving zien en zodoende namen ze plaats in de achterbak van de Landrover. De wegen rondom Malindi waren in die tijd en nu trouwens nog, ook in de droge tijd in slechte staat. Grote kuilen gaten en veel “wasbord” stukken maakten het zitten in de achterbak van de wagen niet bepaald tot een pretje. Maar de passagiers konden wel tegen een stootje zeiden ze. We bezochten dorpen van lokale Giriama stam. De vrouwen daar dragen en droegen traditioneel een rokje van kokospalmblad terwijl het bovenlijf geheel ontbloot is. Zonder enige schroom beleven zij zo hun daaglijks bestaan maar voor onze gasten was het toch een indrukwekkende ervaring. Zoveel blote borsten in allerlei maten en standen hadden ze nog nooit gezien. We gingen eenvoudige huisjes/hutten binnen om te kijken hoe het er daar uitzag en Martien kwam tot de conclusie dat een blind paard er geen kwaad zou kunnen uitrichten. Het bezoek ging voor het gevoel snel voorbij en we moesten ook weer terug naar het project want er wachtte veel werk. Politieke moord dreigde het land etnisch te verscheuren (video/audio) Van Halsteren naar Hola in Kenya (afl. nr.47) “Van Erf en Akker” Politieke moord dreigde het land etnsich te verscheuren In Kenya is de invloed van de verschillenden (stammen) volken groot en de onderlinge competitie is ook groot om maar niet te spreken van het wederzijdse wantrouwen. Toen destijds de befaamde en geliefde politicus Tom Mboya op 5 juli 1969 in Nairobi op 38 jarige leeftijd werd vermoord ging er een schok door het land. Tom een lid van de Luo stam en algemeen gezien als ooit een mogelijke opvolger van de eerste president van Kenya, Yomo Kenyatta een lid van de Kikuyu stam. Geroddel en achterklap binnen de Kikuyu gemeenschap duidde er op dat men er niet van gediend was dat een Luo president zou kunnen worden. De Kikuyus hadden immers de kooltjes uit het vuur gehaald tijdens de strijd om de onafhankelijkheid. Hoe zou een onbesneden Luo nou president kunnen worden van het land? Tot op heden is dat ook nog steeds niet gebeurd ofschoon bij de laatste verkiezingen het op randje af wel zou hebben kunnen gebeuren. Toen het bericht van de laffe moord naar buiten kwam dat hij was doodgeschoten in een drukke winkelstraat in Nairobi hield iedereen de adem in. Van welke stam was de moordenaar???? Het is een beetje te vergelijken met wat er nu in ons land plaats vond. Toen Pim Fortuijn werd vermoord ging er een zucht van verlichting op dat het een gestoorde autochtone Nederlander was en niet iemand uit het allochtone circuit. Uiteindelijk bleek het toch een Kikuyu te zijn geweest die Tom Mboya vermoordde maar het onderzoek en de arrestaties duurden zolang dat de grootste onrust in het land al weer een beetje was gaan liggen. De moordenaar Njenga Njoroge werd opgehangen maar zijn laatste woorden waren ”waarom gaan jullie niet achter de grote man aan” waarmee hij doelde op de opdrachtgever Super recent is het geval dat gisteren (4 jan 2014) in Nairobi plaats vond toen bekend werd dat Fidel Odinga de oudste zoon van de welbekende Luo oppositieleider Raila Odinga , dood werd gevonden. In Kenya begint dan meteen een geruchtenmachine en complottheorie de kop op te steken. Er zijn politieversterkingen opgeroepen want de “geruchten “gaan dat het een politieke moord zou zijn. Jongeren uit wijken in Nairobi waar veel Luo’s wonen gingen de straat op en begonnen met stenen naar auto’s te gooien en eisten snel een verklaring over de aard van de dood. Of dat waar is zal misschien wel nooit bekend worden maar het zou kunnen zijn dat bepaalde groeperingen er belang bij hebben om onrust te zaaien in het land. Bekijk het hierbij weergegeven you tube filmpje en voel de achterdocht bij een dergelijke zaak onder de bevolking. Zie ook meteen als bij vangst in welk een weelderige omgeving sommigen in Kenya wonen en leven. Daarbij wordt de kloof tussen rijk en arm duidelijk zichtbaar. In Kenya blijven of terug naar Nederland Van Halsteren naar Hola in Kenya (afl. nr.45) “Van Erf en Akker” In Kenya blijven of terug naar Nederland Toen we het contract tekenden voor onze werkzaamheden op het Tana Irrigation Scheme in Kenya besloeg dat een periode van twee jaar. We stonden ervan versteld dat de tijd zo snel voorbijging en de contractperiode bijna voorbij was. We hadden toen nog geen uitzicht op een verlenging want de Nederlandse regering had nog geen besluit genomen om het project nog verder te financieren. Dat betekende een periode van onzekerheid en naarmate de einddatum van ons contract naderde nam die onzekerheid alleen nog maar toe. Toch was in die tijd dat we er werkten ontwikkelingshulp nog een hype en wilde iedere westerse regering scoren met veel inzet van geld en mensen zonder zich daarbij steeds af te vragen of dat geld allemaal wel goed terecht kwam. Bij ons op het Tana Irrigation Project hadden we in de afgelopen twee jaar veel vooruitgang geboekt en een missie uit Nederland die kwam kijken hoe het er bij stond gaf na het bezoek te kennen dat we wel zouden kunnen rekenen met een verlenging. Daar moest natuurlijk in de Haagse burelen eerst nog eindeloos over vergaderd worden alvorens er een besluit zou vallen. Dat positieve besluit kwam gelukkig en zodoende konden we voorlopig nog eens twee jaar aan onze verblijf in Hola toe gaan voegen. We waren in die periode van twee jaar al danig verknocht geraakt aan dit verlaten en eenzame oord in de toen nog min of meer ongerepte Oost Afrikaanse savanne waar het groot wild nog in groten getale aanwezig was. We zagen het helemaal niet zitten om alweer terug naar Nederland te gaan. We wisten na die verlenging van 2 jaar nog niet dat we daarna nog 3.5 jaar in Hola zouden blijven waarmee ons verblijf in het Tana River District in totaal 8.5 jaar zou duren Ondertussen was de katholieke missiepost van de paters van het Heilig Hart uit Ierland weer bemand nadat daar enige jaren niemand meer was gedetacheerd. De bisschop had de vorige pater terug geroepen toen bekend werd dat hij een vriendschappelijk relatie had aangeknoopt met een jonge dame die was uitgetreden uit het rosse leven en bereid was de pater daarna in Hola zijn sokken te stoppen en wie weet wat allemaal nog meer want hij was ook maar een mens. Dat kon niet door de beugel vond de bisschop dus werd hij tot de orde geroepen en onder toezicht van meerderen in Malindi geplaatst. We werden verblijd met het gezelschap van Father Patrick Wheelan. Een rasechte Ier met een wilde bos rood haar en gezicht vol sproeten. Een aardige man maar een onhandige sukkel. Gelukkig kreeg hij enige tijd later assistentie van een tweede missiepater. In dit geval Father Furtado een Goanees een handige vent die alle onnozelheid van Patrick compenseerde. Met deze twee geestelijken hebben we heel wat kaartavondjes doorgebracht en stevige glazen whisky genoten. Avondje uit in Tana River Club in Hola Van Halsteren naar Hola in Kenya (afl. nr.44) “Van Erf en Akker” Avondje uit in Tana River Club in Hola (Kenya) In Hola in het Tana River District zijn maar weinig uitgaansgelegenheden te vinden. Er zijn wat lokale kroegjes waar eigengemaakt drank wordt verkocht. Vaak duistere lokaaltjes op een achtererf. Er zijn ook enkele bars waar zo nu dan bier beschikbaar is. Meestal is dat snel uitverkocht en moet men het weer tijden zonder doen. Maar er is ook de Tana River Club. Een club die alleen toegankelijk is voor het hogere kader van de regering en de leden moeten voldoen aan een meer dan modaal inkomen. De club is destijds gesticht door de Britten die hier het concentratiekamp Hola tijdens de “Mau Mau” periode bestuurden. De club lagt een eind verwijderd van de dorpen en het “winkelcentrum” maar wel vlak bij de rivier en was omgeven door een groene oase van palmbomen en acacia’s. Vogels laten er zich luidruchtig horen en de apen slingeren zich van boom naar boom. De bavianen zitten op hun kans te wachten om tijdens het bereiden van een feestmaal snel iets te stelen en dan haastig terug het bos in vluchten. We gingen ook geregeld naar de Tana River Club waar we de Kenyaanse hogere ambtenaren ontmoeten. Er werd veel gedronken en nog veel meer gepraat maar het was er gezellig. Het was een ontmoetingspunt dat eigenlijk niemand wilde missen. Toch stond de club verschillenden keren op het punt te sluiten. Groot probleem was het feit dat er nogal wat clubleden veel dronken en dan hun verteer niet konden betalen. Dan werd dat op de “lat” geschreven met de belofte dat het na het uitbetalen van het salaris direct zou worden voldaan. Helaas hadden dergelijke lieden ook elders in het dorp dezelfde beloften gedaan en trok de Tana River Club meestal aan het kortste eind, Onze collega Foeke werd op een zeker moment gevraag om als penningmeester op te treden. Dat was een goed idee want met Nederlandse vaardigheid kweet hij zich van zijn taak. Dit tot groot verdriet van de wanbetalers die nu geen drank meer konden bestellen omdat zij, o ironie, op een “zwarte” lijst kwamen te staan. In de Kenyaanse mentaliteit van ons kent ons werd deze striktheid maar matig gewaardeerd en al gauw uitgelegd als blanke bazigheid in een land waar ze nu toch zelf de baas waren geworden. Het leidde er toe dat het bestuur van de club de taken van de penningmeester ontkrachtte en wanbetalers toch toegang kregen tot de aankoop van bier en sterke drank. Foeke gooide de handdoek in de ring en kreeg in feite stank voor dank en beperkte zich daarna alleen nog tot het bezoek van de club om er een drankje te kopen en wat sociale verplichtingen te presenteren. Zelf hebben we ons alleen maar beperkt tot bezoeker en ons verre gehouden van bestuursfuncties en alleen maar de vruchten geplukt van het bestaan van de club. We kregen op een zeker moment de faciliteit om drank belastingvrij in te kopen en dat zette aan tot een grote toename van het clubbezoek waarbij vooral whisky en gin zeer populaire drankjes waren. We begrepen van de Kenyanen dat onder het Britse bewind er geen sterke drank aan “zwarten” mocht worden verkocht in openbare gelegenheden en alleen bier en eigen brouwsel was toegestaan. Sterke drank was alleen voor “witten”toegankelijk. Vreemd was ook dat “zwarten”geen korte broeken mochten dragen want dat was ook slechts voorbehouden aan “witten” De club raakte in verval toen er door Somalische bendes (shifta’s) overvallen werden gepleegd in de buurt van de club.
