Kenya (/ˈkɛnjə/ or /ˈkiːnjə/), officially the Republic of Kenya, is a country in East Africa that lies on the equator. With the Indian Ocean to its south-east, it is bordered by Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the north-east. Kenya has a land area of 580,000 km2 and a population of nearly 41 million, representing 42 different peoples and cultures. The country is named after Mount Kenya, a significant landmark and second among Africa's highest mountain peaks. Kenya's capital and largest city is Nairobi.
Kenya has a warm and humid climate along its coastline on the Indian Ocean which changes to wildlife-rich savannah grasslands moving inland towards the capital Nairobi. Nairobi has a cool climate that gets colder approaching Mount Kenya, which has three permanently snow-capped peaks. The warm and humid tropical climate reappears further inland towards lake Victoria, before giving way to temperate forested and hilly areas in the western region. The North Eastern regions along the border with Somalia and Ethiopia are arid and semi-arid areas with near-desert landscapes. Lake Victoria, the world's second largest fresh-water lake (after Lake Superior in the US and Canada) and the world's largest tropical lake, is situated to the southwest and is shared with Uganda and Tanzania. Kenya is famous for its safaris and diverse world-famous wildlife reserves such as Tsavo National Park, the Maasai Mara, Nakuru National Park, and Aberdares National Park.

Travel video about destination Kenya.
Founded by Alexander The Great in 332 B.C., the city of Alexandria is located in the Nile Delta and it was here that Caesar and Mark Anthony fell under Cleopatra’s spell.Cairo is Africa’s largest city and the heart of the Arab world, extreme poverty living next to opulent wealth, and modern, Western boutiques next to ancient souks. The Cairo Museum is home to the most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities, including the golden mask and tomb of Tutankamun. Towering above almost any other human achievement are the impressive three pyramids of Gisa. The Cheops Pyramid, the world’s largest single construction, took four hundred thousand workers twenty years to build. It weighs as much as all the cathedrals in Europe put together and spans an area of 53,000 square metres - the height of a fifty storey skyscraper. In the middle of today’s modern city of Luxor, known as the ‘Capital City Of The Pharaohs’, the Luxor Temple stretches along the eastern banks of the Nile and, not far away, the temple complex of Karnak and the Amun Temple. 67 kilometres from Luxor, on the western bank of the Nile, lies the Temple Of Dendera, the most important place of worship for the love goddess, HATHOR, whose heavenly appearance was portrayed by the body of a cow. At Aswan, the landscape of the Nile is enchanting, but it is the stone temples of Abu Simbel that take one back to ancient Egypt, land of the Pharaohs, and archaeological paradise.

Kenya, with its numerous natural wonders gives a tourist the joy of a seaside holiday and the thrills of a safari. One can sit in the shade of a palm tree and swim in the emerald green water of the Indian Ocean, which runs out to the white, sandy beaches. We can take a look at Mombasa, most important port of Eastern Africa, the city of the Tusk Gate and the Jesus Fort. How about a typical African safari to Tsavo? Naturally, in the meantime we can meet elephants, lions, giraffes and dolphins. We can marvel at the 13th century city of Gedi. We can take a boat trip among the coral reefs of the sea national parks, or be amazed by the war dance of the Masai people, and can have a dinner at a coral cave.

Travel video about destination Nairobi in Kenya.
Nairobi is Kenya's busy, expensive yet dangerous capital city. It is also both fascinating and modern. Nairobi is the country's most important and beautiful city and with the finest temperate climate between Johannesburg and Cairo, is located at an altitude of almost 1,700 metres above sea level.
The government district of City Square contains the Conference Centre and the Kanu Tower, the headquarters of government and the city's tallest building.
Canons guard the main entrance to the National Museum that is situated on Museum Hill, a fascinating building that covers much of Kenya's culture and history. The museum provides an interesting insight into Pre-history as well as to various cultures and the country's flora and fauna.
Directly in front of the city gates is the Nairobi National Park, the oldest of all Kenya's nature parks. Groups of ostriches can be seen bathing in the hot sand. A number of springboks stroll around elegantly between scattered rocks and trees that have been uprooted by elephants close to the city's skyline.
Nairobi is a metropolis in the 'Realm of The Golden Sun' and is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating cities in the world.

Amboseli National Park, formerly Maasai Amboseli Game Reserve, is in Kajiado District, Rift Valley Province in Kenya. The park is 39,206 hectares (392 km2; 151 sq mi)[1] in size at the core of an 8,000 square kilometres (3,100 sq mi) ecosystem that spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border. The local people are mainly Maasai, but people from other parts of the country have settled there attracted by the successful tourist-driven economy and intensive agriculture along the system of swamps that makes this low-rainfall area (average 350 mm (14 in)) one of the best wildlife-viewing experiences in the world with 400 species of birds including water birds, pelicans, kingfishers, crakes, hammerkops and 47 types of raptor.
The park protects two of the five main swamps, and includes a dried-up Pleistocene lake and semi-arid vegetation.
240 kilometers (150 miles) southeast from the capital city Nairobi, Amboseli National Park is the second most popular national park in Kenya after Maasai Mara National Reserve.
History
================
In 1883, Joseph Thompson was the first European to penetrate the feared Maasai region known as Empusel (meaning 'salty, dusty place' in Maa). He, too, was astonished by the fantastic array of wildlife and the contrast between the arid areas of the dry-lake bed and the oasis of the swamps, a contrast that persists today.
Amboseli was set aside as the 'Southern Reserve' for Maasai in 1906 but returned to local control as a Game Reserve in 1948. Gazetted a National Park in 1974 to protect the core this unique ecosystem, it was declared a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve in 1991. The park earned $3.5 m (€2.9 m) in 2005. On 29 September 2005, Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki declared that control of the park should pass from the Kenya Wildlife Service to the Olkejuado County Council and the Maasai tribe. Some observers saw this as a political favour in advance of a vote on a new Kenyan constitution: legal challenges are currently in court. The degazetting would divert park admission fees directly to the County Council with shared benefits to the Maasai immediately surrounding the park.
Fauna
==========
The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants.[3] Other attractions of the park include opportunities to meet Maasai and visit a Maasai village. The park also offers spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
Amboseli offers some of the best opportunities to see African animals because its vegetation is sparse due to the long dry months. Amboseli National Park is home to wild animals, which include the African elephant, cape buffalo, impala, lion, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest among other African animals. There is also a host of Kenyan birds, both large and small, to see if you keep your eyes open and stop at every sighting.
The park has several rules to protect the wildlife: do not get out of your vehicle, except at designated spots; do not harass the animals in any way; keep to the tracks; no off-road driving; and animals always have the right of way. The roads in Amboseli have a loose surface of volcanic soil that is dusty in the dry season and impassable in the wet season.

Africa Tours 2015 - Kenya, Tanzania tourism & Vacations 2015 - Kenya, Tanzania Trip 2015

Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa, bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north; Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, and Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south.
Do in Tanzania
============
1 - Safari While you are in Tanzania you may organize your safari to Serengeti and other National parks at an affordable price. If there's one trip that will change your perspective on life, it's an African safari. Contact some of the tour operators for Safari Details.
2 - Cultural Tours Touring Tanzania for culture is interestingly great as it encompasses more than 150+ ethnic groups. There is plenty of traditional food, cultural practices (such as hunting with bushmen, beeskeeping, traditional medicine) that one enjoys within the boundaries. You will also get to visit a number of locations that normally people would be completely unaware of. If you happen to be a person who loves to explore the world and meet new people in order to gain knowledge about different customs, a cultural tour is definitely the best type of vacation for you.The services are not expensive and can turn out to be cheaper than expected provided you get the right information on where to stay, best tour companies and just knowledge of what you want. This way, it will save you time and costs as well.
3 - There are loads of National Parks for those wanting to watch Tanzania's wildlife. You can gain entry for around $100 US and benefit from a tour (and perhaps a night's accommodation). The better parks, though packed with tourists, are found in the north of the country. Ruaha National Park is the best in the south (locals actually say this is the best park, especially if you want to see wild animals as opposed to semi-tame ones in the northern parks). Don't just be sucked into the tourist circuit in the north; the south offers great parks and towns (base yourself out of Iringa), and you will feel less of a tourist and more of a guest if you travel this way.
4 - Scuba diving in and around Pemba and Zanzibar is another good experience.
5 - You can also visit numerous historical Slave Trade sites, which could make for an interesting, if a little depressing, excursion.
6 - Beaches: Did you know that Tanzania has some of the best, most unspoiled beaches in the world? They are stunning, with their white sand, palm trees, and cool Indian Ocean water!
7 - Kayak the beautiful coastal waters with a tour operator.
8 - Tanzania has two of the best Stone Age sites in the world: Isimila Gorge (near Iringa) and the earliest known examples of human art among the rock paintings, near Kolo, north of Dodoma -- some of which are reckoned to be around 30,000 years old.
9 - Kilimanjaro is one of Tanzania's main attractions. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. Many visitors come to Tanzania to summit this great mountain. The main peak is estimated to be 5895m high making it a real challenge for mountaineers.

In 2003, the CGIAR Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) released a report that indicated that only 2% of the households in Wote, a district in Eastern Kenya, are food secure 12 months in a year. Farmers in this area struggle to wrest a meager living from farming as they are adversely affected by drought, a situation that has been made worse by climate change and land degradation.

Japan - Kyoto Treaty comes into force, arrivals, speeches
APTN
Tokyo - 16 Feb 2005
The Kyoto global warming pact came into force on Wednesday, imposing limits on emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases scientists blame for increasing temperatures, melting glaciers and rising sea levels. The agreement, negotiated in Japan''s ancient capital of Kyoto in 1997 and ratified by 140 nations, officially came into force at midnight New York time (0500 GMT). Environmental officials, gathered in the convention hall where the accord was adopted, hailed the protocol as an historic first step in the battle against global warming and urged the world to further strengthen safeguards against greenhouse gases. The protocol targets carbon dioxide and five other gases that can trap heat in the atmosphere, and are believed to be behind rising global temperatures that many scientists say are already disrupting the Earth''s environment and weather patterns.
The United States, the world''s largest emitter of such gases, has refused to ratify the agreement, saying it would harm the economy and is flawed by the lack of restrictions on emissions by emerging economies China and India. The Kyoto agreement was delayed by the requirement that countries accounting for 55 percent of the world''s emissions must ratify it. That goal was reached last year, nearly seven years after the pact was negotiated, with Russia''s approval. Russia ratified the treaty, but only after intense debate among top Kremlin officials about whether the pact would harm Russia''s growing economy.
Earlier on Wednesday, five World Wildlife Fund (WWF) activists dressed as polar bears gathered in a Tokyo shopping district to celebrate the implementation of the protocol. The impact of global warming is more evident at the poles. According to the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (ACIA) report last November, the North Pole would no longer be covered in ice during summer by 2100 if global warming wasn''t slowed. The Kyoto targets vary by region: the European Union is committed to cutting emissions to eight percent below 1990 levels by 2012; the United States to a seven percent reduction before US President George W Bush denounced the protocol in 2001.

"The polar bear is one of the most threatened creatures from global warming, so what we wanted to do is to get people to understand that so much is at stake and that climate change has such an impact on living creatures, such as polar bears and all kinds of people around the world. But there is a hope that actually there is some kind of courage to do something about it, so today is a day of cerebration because we need to save the polar bears and other creatures."
3. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Voxpop, Kyoto Protocol supporter:
"The conference was seven years ago and it has been a long time, but the protocol has finally come into force, so I am excited and glad."

Climate Commitment: Kenya submits key climate change mitigation document to UN
Kenya has submitted a plan to cut the country's carbon emissions in the next 15 years, part of a plan known as the intended nationally determined contributions. The plan, valued at 40 billion dollars, is set to put Kenya on a path to cut green house gas emissions by up to 30% by the year 2030. The climate action plan was submitted to the united nations framework on climate change convention, making Kenya the 49th country to submit the crucial document. The plan includes expansion of renewable energy, reducing reliance on wood fuels, achieving 10% tree cover across the country and delivering more sustainable transport systems. These INDCS will form the basis of discussions at the climate change meeting that's coming up in December in Paris. At the moment Kenya's carbon emissions are relatively low, at 1.2 metric tonnes per capita, against a global average of 7.58 metric tonnes. Most of these emissions are as a result of wood fuel use, and fossil fuel in energy production.

From extreme drought we are going to have our food security compromised. From extreme flooding we are going to have diseases which we do not manufacture the medicines to control but other than that we are also going to lose lives. STORYLINE:
As Kenya continued to struggle with a drought that has destroyed hundreds of thousands of livelihoods, scientists have predicted that global warming will double the current temperature and drought patterns will worsen catastrophically.
Grace Akumu, the Executive Director for Climate Network Africa, says that Africa will be the most affected by climate change, and placed much of the responsibility on the industrialised nations.
"Now we have a scientific report that is backing Africa's case that Africa is going to be the most impacted continent by climate change, and this is the fourth assessment report of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change," Akumu said.
Unless immediate action is taken, the world's economy will be devastated, hitting the under developed countries the hardest.
"I must say that it is not only Africa that will be impacted in fact the whole world, but Africa is going to suffer most from impacts of climate change and I'm very glad that it is top of the agenda of the G-8 meeting in Germany," Akumu added.
Germany is preparing to host a summit for eight of the most industrialised nations blamed for the largest percentage of green house emissions whose top priority this year on their agenda will be climate change. The forum will be held in a small town called Heiligendamm.
It is widely reported that global warming has effects such as melting glaciers, rising water levels causing floods, and widespread outbreaks of diseases such as malaria, cholera and dengue fever.
The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement, negotiated in December 1997, by which industrialised nations have committed to making substantial reductions in their emissions of greenhouse gases by 2012.

Based on these findings, ICRISAT formed a partnership with the Kenyan Agriculture and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) and the Ministry of Agriculture in Kenya, to introduce and bring to the main stream the sorghum system and two legume crops (cowpeas and green gram) with inherent resilience to drought with the aim to improve the livelihoods of the poor smallholder farming households. The project funded through CCAFS has so far reached 366 farmers in Wote, who have adopted the sorghum-legume technologies.

Hear from people who have benefited from CAFOD-supported sustainable solar energy projects in the Isiolo region of rural Kenya. Renewable energy transforms lives and has enabled this clinic to purify water, refrigerate vaccines and treat more emergency patients at night.
This region is affected by drought and a changing climate, which can cause crops and animals to die, and over 75% of people do not have access to electricity.
CAFOD’s One Climate, One World campaign is calling for political leaders to work together to prevent climate change pushing people deeper into poverty and to support the transition from polluting fossil fuels to sustainable energy for all.
Join CAFOD and The Climate Coalition at Speak Up For The Love Of... in London on Wednesday 17 June to tell your MP about the things you love that you could lose to climate change.
It’s the first chance to talk with our newly-elected MPs about climate change and the need for sustainable energy after May’s general election and before December's crucial international climate talks.
Together we can show our new government how much we care that climate change is pushing people deeper into poverty and share how access to sustainable energy is helping people to flourish. Please join us – and the whole of The Climate Coalition - for a day to remember.

The Human Impact of Climate Change: Personal Stories from Somalia, Ghana, and Kenya
(http://www.climaterealityproject.org) Hosted by Al Gore and The Climate Reality Project, "24 Hours of Reality: The Cost of Carbon" shares the stories of real people affected by the impacts of climate change in Africa due to global carbon pollution. We tell the stories of Somali refugees affected by drought and famine forced to flee to Kenya just to survive. In Ghana, rising sea levels are driving residents of coastal villages further and further inland. And in Kenya, a lake that once provided fisherman with their livelihoods is rapidly drying up, driving political instability.
24 Hours of Reality: The #CostOfCarbon traveled across six continents and the poles, identifying the specific costs we're paying for carbon pollution. Celebrities, scientists, economists, and other experts joined former Vice President Al Gore and Climate Reality President and CEO Maggie L. Fox to explore the diverse impacts climate change is having around the world.

Climate Costs: Kenya will need $500M a year to survive climate change
500 million dollars was how much money Kenya needed in 2015 to address current impacts of climate change and and prepare for future changes. This translated to roughly to 4.6 billion shillings. Going into the year 2030.
However, that cost was projected to increase to a maximum of two billion dollars per year. But scientists were worried that research was not progressing fast enough to mitigate the impacts of the changing weather due to lack of capacity.

Kenya Travel Video Guide • Great Destinations

History
================
Fauna
==========

"Well, I would say that climate change is going to affect Africa in terms of development, the continent is not going to be able to develop because all the resources for which any country needs to develop are going to be impacted by climate change, either from flooding or from extreme drought. From extreme drought we are going to have our food security compromised. From extreme flooding we are going to have diseases which we do not manufacture the medicines to control but other than that we are also going to lose lives. I'm talking about malaria, cholera, dengue fever, etcetera."

Hear from children and teachers who have benefited from CAFOD-supported sustainable solar energy projects in the Isiolo region of rural Kenya.

Methods of combating climate change may harm ASALS claim researchers
Arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) were not as vulnerable to climate change as you thought. a group of researchers from the International Institute for Environment and Development said that the world had been handling the matter of climate change resilience in dry lands the wrong way, because most of the interventions designed for adaptation were actually worsening the situation.
