At Aswan, the landscape of the Nile is enchanting, but it is the stone temples of Abu Simbel that take one back to ancient Egypt, land of the Pharaohs, and archaeological paradise.

The park is 39,206 hectares (392 km2; 151 sq mi)[1] in size at the core of an 8,000 square kilometres (3,100 sq mi) ecosystem that spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border. The local people are mainly Maasai, but people from other parts of the country have settled there attracted by the successful tourist-driven economy and intensive agriculture along the system of swamps that makes this low-rainfall area (average 350 mm (14 in)) one of the best wildlife-viewing experiences in the world with 400 species of birds including water birds, pelicans, kingfishers, crakes, hammerkops and 47 types of raptor. The park protects two of the five main swamps, and includes a dried-up Pleistocene lake and semi-arid vegetation. 240 kilometers (150 miles) southeast from the capital city Nairobi, Amboseli National Park is the second most popular national park in Kenya after Maasai Mara National Reserve. History ================ In 1883, Joseph Thompson was the first European to penetrate the feared Maasai region known as Empusel (meaning 'salty, dusty place' in Maa). He, too, was astonished by the fantastic array of wildlife and the contrast between the arid areas of the dry-lake bed and the oasis of the swamps, a contrast that persists today. Amboseli was set aside as the 'Southern Reserve' for Maasai in 1906 but returned to local control as a Game Reserve in 1948. Gazetted a National Park in 1974 to protect the core this unique ecosystem, it was declared a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve in 1991. The park earned $3.5 m (€2.9 m) in 2005. On 29 September 2005, Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki declared that control of the park should pass from the Kenya Wildlife Service to the Olkejuado County Council and the Maasai tribe. Some observers saw this as a political favour in advance of a vote on a new Kenyan constitution: legal challenges are currently in court. The degazetting would divert park admission fees directly to the County Council with shared benefits to the Maasai immediately surrounding the park. Fauna ========== The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants.[3] Other attractions of the park include opportunities to meet Maasai and visit a Maasai village. The park also offers spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Amboseli offers some of the best opportunities to see African animals because its vegetation is sparse due to the long dry months. Amboseli National Park is home to wild animals, which include the African elephant, cape buffalo, impala, lion, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest among other African animals. There is also a host of Kenyan birds, both large and small, to see if you keep your eyes open and stop at every sighting. The park has several rules to protect the wildlife: do not get out of your vehicle, except at designated spots; do not harass the animals in any way; keep to the tracks; no off-road driving; and animals always have the right of way. The roads in Amboseli have a loose surface of volcanic soil that is dusty in the dry season and impassable in the wet season.

Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. Many visitors come to Tanzania to summit this great mountain. The main peak is estimated to be 5895m high making it a real challenge for mountaineers.

East African Community

The East African Community (EAC) is an intergovernmental organisation comprising five countries in the African Great Lakes region in eastern Africa: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Uhuru Kenyatta, the President of the Republic of Kenya, is the EAC's current chairman. The organisation was originally founded in 1967, collapsed in 1977, and was officially revived on 7 July 2000. In 2008, after negotiations with the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the EAC agreed to an expanded free trade area including the member states of all three organizations. The EAC is an integral part of the African Economic Community. The East African Community is a potential precursor to the establishment of the East African Federation, a proposed federation of its five members into a single state. In 2010, the EAC launched its own common market for goods, labour and capital within the region, with the goal of creating a common currency and eventually a full political federation. In 2013 a protocol was signed outlining their plans for launching a monetary union within 10 years. This video is targeted to blind users. Straat Clement In die periode werd voornamelijk stukgoed in de ruimen van de vrachtschepen vervoerd. Het laden en lossen van de lading betekende dus veel tijdrovende handwerk. Het gevolg hiervan was dat schepen meerdere dagen in een haven lagen; in sommige gevallen was er zelfs sprake van weken voor de haven wachten als gevolg van congestie. Deze situatie zorgde ervoor dat de bemanning alle tijd had om (groot) onderhoud aan de hoofdmotor te plegen en zelfs tijd over hielden om verlof op te nemen en op de wal te gaan “passagieren”. Aangezien in de jaren ’60 en ‘70 er nog geen Jumbo’s van Boeing vlogen, was er nog geen spraken van massa tourisme voor verre bestemmingen. Zeevarenden in die tijd hadden daarom het voorrecht om de wereld te verkennen. De grootste toestellen voor verre bestemmingen waren destijds de DC-8 en de Boeing 707. Helaas eindigde deze mooie tijd door de komst van de zee containers. Steeds vaker kregen we aankomst en vertrek van het schip in een haven op dezelfde dag, waardoor groter onderhoud aan de hoofdmotor of passagieren aan de wal bijna onmogelijk werd. Van deze vele mooie momenten tijdens mijn koopvaardij loopbaan heb ik foto’s, dia’s en super 8 films gemaakt. Helaas is veel materiaal uit die tijd zoek geraakt. Ik ben begonnen om het overgebleven materiaal om te zetten in “korte” video filmpjes. Op internet zijn op verschillende koopvaardij-sites door ex zeevarenden herinneringen uit de RIL-tijd beschreven. Al Shabaab and Kenya's Somali invasion

On 16 October 2011, Kenya's armed forces invaded southern Somalia in the midst of a severe regional famine. Their purpose is to capture the port city of Kismayu and to remove the Al Shabaab Islamist militia from the region. This presentation will review the background to Kenya's military action, setting it in the context of the securitization of development in the wider region of eastern Africa. Refugees still flood across the borders of Ethiopia and Kenya, simultaneously presenting a humanitarian and a security challenge. Famine has been both a cause of the invasion and a cloak behind which its politics can be hidden: issues of international responsibility, and of citizenship and surveillance, loom large. It will be argued that the Kenyan invasion implies a strengthening of sovereignty in this region, through the militarization of politics. The weak states of eastern Africa are being remade at their borders through warfare and conflict. A decade on from 9/11, the global war on terror is having a profound impact upon the region where the threat of al Qaeda first became manifest to the world.

In 1967, Nakuru was the first National Park in Africa that was also designated as a bird reserve. It covers an area of 188 square kilometres and contains much flora and fauna.There are more than four hundred varieties of birds in Nakuru and British biologist Peter Scott called this bird paradise, ‘the greatest ornithological spectacle on Earth’. There are flamingos for as far the eye can see and also large numbers of pelicans, plus the Nimmersatt, an African stork. Large herds of antelope and zebra graze on the hot savannah while vultures, lions and hyena hunt for food among the more isolated, slow moving and weaker animals. Giraffes, elephants and rhinos share the same nutritious trees while some of the taller trees are the perfect home for monkeys and baboons. The massive Plant Eater is, apart from the elephant, the largest land mammal in the world plus, with more than thirty varieties of black and two varieties of white rhinos, Lake Nakuru ensures the continued protection of these mighty creatures. Africa is like a Noah’s Ark in which the animals of its game reserves live free and protected. It’s no surprise therefore Lake Nakuru is known as a magnificent wonder of the Dark Continent’s natural world.
