An influential theatre practitioner of the 20th century, Brecht made equally significant contributions to dramaturgy and theatrical production, the latter particularly through the seismic impact of the tours undertaken by the Berliner Ensemble – the post-war theatre company operated by Brecht and his wife, long-time collaborator and actress Helene Weigel.
Bertolt Brecht was born in Augsburg, Bavaria, (about 50 miles (80 km) north-west of Munich) to a conventionally-devout Protestant mother and a Catholic father (who had been persuaded to have a Protestant wedding). His father worked for a paper mill, becoming its managing director in 1914. Thanks to his mother's influence, Brecht knew the Bible, a familiarity that would impact on his writing throughout his life. From her, too, came the "dangerous image of the self-denying woman" that recurs in his drama. Brecht's home life was comfortably middle class, despite what his occasional attempt to claim peasant origins implied. At school in Augsburg he met Caspar Neher, with whom he formed a lifelong creative partnership, Neher designing many of the sets for Brecht's dramas and helping to forge the distinctive visual iconography of their epic theatre.

Plot The Empty Plan contrasts scenes from Brecht's exile in Los Angeles (1941 to 1947) with productions of his 1931 play The Mother in the late Weimar Republic, New Deal America and post-war East Germany, exploring different modes of performance and their relation to changing historical and political circumstances. The title of the film is taken from Brecht's Messingkauf Dialogues, an unfinished theoretical work written during his exile, which considers the possibilities of 'committed art' and its practical, theoretical and formal limits at a time when revolutionary mass movements had been defeated and theatre was supplanted by Hollywood cinema as the dominant form of popular entertainment. Through the figures of Brecht, his collaborator Ruth Berlau and his wife, the actress Helene Weigel, the film reflects on conflicting personal, artistic and political ambitions, raising questions about the nature of art and the unrealised dream of its supersession through revolutionary practice.

Plot Eight hundred German filmmakers (cast and crew) fled the Nazis in the 1930s. The film uses voice-overs, archival footage, and film clips to examine Berlin's vital filmmaking in the 1920s; then it follows a producer, directors, composers, editors, writers, and actors to Hollywood: some succeeded and many found no work. Among those profiled are Erich Pommer, Joseph May, Ernst Lubitsch, Fritz Lang, Billy Wilder, and Peter Lorre. Once in Hollywood, these exiles helped each other, housed new arrivals, and raised money so others could escape. Some worked on anti-Nazi films, like Casablanca. The themes and lighting of German Expressionism gave rise in Hollywood to film noir.
"Do not fear death so much but rather the inadequate life"
"Unhappy the land that is in need of heroes."
"Mixing one's wines may be a mistake, but old and new wisdom mix admirably."
"Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which"
"Boy meets Girl, So What?"
"Don't be afraid of death so much as an inadequate life."
"Everyone chases after happiness, not noticing that happiness is right at their heels."
"War is like love, it always finds a way"
"No one will improve your lot if you do not yourself."
"Intelligence is not to make no mistakes, but quickly to see how to make them good."
"War is like love; it always finds a way."
"Sometimes it's more important to be human, than to have good taste."
"Science knows only one commandment - contribute to science."
"There are many elements to a campaign. Leadership is number one. Everything else is number two."
"You don't need to pray to God any more when there are storms in the sky, but you do have to be insured."
"What happens to the hole when the cheese is gone?"
"The defeats and victories of the fellows at the top aren't always defeats and victories for the fellows at the bottom."
"One forgets too easily the difference between a man and his image, and that there is none between the sound of his voice on the screen and in real life."
"People remain what they are even if their faces fall apart."
"What is the robbing of a bank compared to the founding of a bank?"

Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

The Threepenny Opera: a skewering social critique with a rousing musical score
This iconic work by Brecht and Weill is a landmark of modern theatre. Brecht broke down the fourth wall and Weill ushered in a new kind of musical theatre integrating jazz into his scintillating score. The Threepenny Opera is part satire, part aesthetic innovation and sheer theatrical invention.
Borrowing John Gay’s 18th century ballad opera, The Beggar’s Opera, Brecht takes aim at the traditional bourgeois theatre of the Weimar Republic, revealing a society where law is fickle, money corrupts, and crime pays.
An opera for beggars.
Conceived with magnificence
such as only beggars could imagine,
and an economy such as
only beggars could afford.
The Threepenny Opera

An interview with Heather Anderson Boll, the director of this springs "The Caucasian Chalk Circle" By Bertolt Brecht
“Terrible is the temptation to do good!” warns Bertolt Brecht’s narrator. But good is all that the simple kitchen maid Grusha knows. And when she aids a defenseless infant, their fascinating story calls into question our basic assumptions of what is right in a world gone horrifically wrong.

Theater Talk: Eric Bentley on Bertolt Brecht; Fringe Festival Highlights
A conversation with the eminent critic, playwright and translator ERIC BENTLEY on the life of - and his work with - the legendary Bertolt Brecht and whose plays THE THREEPENNY OPERA and MOTHER COURAGE AND HER CHILDREN have both been revived this season in New York.
Also, Theater Talk's NEW THEATER CORPS correspondents: Eric Miles Glover, Aaron Riccio, Jennifer Stackpole along with CUNY TV's Duane Ferguson, report on highlights of the 10th Annual New York International Fringe Festival (taped 8/9/06).
