Historically a part of Staffordshire, and forming part of the metropolitan county of the West Midlands from 1974, the city is commonly recognised as being named after King Wulfhere, who established an abbey in 659. The original name being from Wulfereēantūn = "Wulfhere's high or principal enclosure or farm" after the Mercian King. The name Wulfrun is used to denote a later nun who established a church in the city – for example, for the Wulfrun Centre or for Wulfrun Hall.
A police officer (also known as a policeman or policewoman, and constablein some forces, particularly in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth nations) is a warranted employee of a police force. In the United States, "officer" is the formal name of the lowest police rank; in many other countries "officer" is a generic term not specifying a particular rank, and the lowest rank is often "constable". Police officers are generally charged with the apprehension of criminals and the prevention and detection of crime, and the maintenance of public order. Police officers may be sworn to an oath, and have the power to arrest people and detain them for a limited time, along with other duties and powers.
Responsibilities of a police officer are varied, and may differ greatly from within one political context to another. Typical duties relate to keeping the peace, law enforcement, protection of people and property, and the investigation of crimes. Officers are expected to respond to a variety of situations that may arise while they are on duty. Rules and guidelines dictate how an officer should behave within the community, and in many contexts restrictions are placed on what the uniformed officer wears. In some countries, rules and procedures dictate that a police officer is obliged to intervene in a criminal incident, even if they are off-duty. Police officers in nearly all countries retain their lawful powers, while off duty.

The Owls were hit by a controversial first half penalty that set Wolves up for victory at Molineux.
Claude Dielna appeared unlucky to be penalised for a tackle on Nouha Dicko but the referee pointed to the spot and Bakary Sako fired home.
Former Wednesday loanee Benik Afobe extended the advantage after the break before James Henry sealed the win and continued Wanderers’ ascent towards the play-offs.
Wednesday did have their chances but could not capitalise, which proved the main difference between the two sides on the night.

Hi Ho Wolverhampton! Used at every home game.
You're everywhere and no where, baby,
thats where you're at,
Going down a bumpy hillside,
In your hippy hat.
Flying out across the country
And getting fat
Saying everything is groovy
When your tyres are flat
And its HI - HO WOLVERHAPTON!!
and away you go now baby,
I see your sun is shining
But I wont make a fuss
Though its obvious.
Flies are in your pea soup baby,
They're waving at me
Anything you want is yours now
Only nothing is for free.
Lies are gonna get you some day
Just wait and see.
So open up your beach umbrella
While you are watching TV
And its HI - HO W

EXCLUSIVE: Knife and hammer attack in Wolverhampton city centre
'The shock of the new' - Wolverhampton was not the only town being transformed into some post modernist Utopia in the nineteen seventies. And why not? It was still an age of great optimism, so out with the old and in with the sleek, minimalist new. All shiny polished chrome and reinforced concrete with a bit of modern art work thrown in....Most of what you see on the orignal 8mm footage shot in 1976 has gone or changed almost beyond recognition apart from a few shady corners lurking around the outskirts of the town. Some of the town's fabric has been transported to the 'Black Country Museum', e.g : the Wednesfield Road Canal Bridge and possibly the water fountain.
Much of what was the site of the old GWR Low Level Railway Station seen in the 76 footage should have been frozen in time as part of the town's industrial and social heritage. But the public house, now appropriately known as 'The Great Weatern' remains as a popular Real Ale pub. Note - the old M&B; and Butlers inn sign a thing of the past. The iconic Victorian factory where the M&B; flag proudly fluttered over Butler's Brewery now sadly falling to ruin and is as they casually say 'waiting for a developer'. It looks so sad now dwafted by a huge twenty-first century monstrosity, as pictured in the last part of the video....
Yet some things remain as emblematic of this once great town St Peter's Church along side the statue of the town's Saxon founder 'Lady Wulfruna'. The stately Art Gallery remains and so does the Prince Consort, Albert mounted upon his horse in Queen Square and so much admired by Queen Victoria, the unmistakable Chubbs red brick building original home of world famous 'Chubbs Lock and Safe Company'. Then there's the renowned 'Molineux Stadium', hallowed football ground of the much celebrated Wolverhampton Wanderers.....but as it used to be with peeps of the oldest street in Wolverhampton North Street that used to be the main route out of town northwards towards Stafford....The Mander Centre featured in the 76 film still towers over the town and has become iconic or at least become acceptable over the decades.
For a taste of the old Wolverhampton wander down to the canal side and walk under the lovely old bridges and beside the 21 locks towards Compton, there you can easily think of the blood, sweat and tears shed by our ancestors.
The video ends as the unchanging, elegant and somehow reassuring spire of Holy Trinity Church surrounded in midst of a really gross urbane sprawl, can yet be seen from an almost entirely green bower on the edge of town.
Take what you can from these images most of them shot on an old 'Super 8' cine camera early one Summer Sunday morning back in 1976.
Audio track - 'The Zodiac' - 'Down to the Bone'.

'It was nice to be kissed repeatedly, In the hall that night there was a great aura of love & gentleness, All the people who came on stage treated me in a very gentle way. I wasn't kicked, punched or dragged, Although they were very emotionally charged, I came away with no bruises'.
"There was a radiant feeling on-stage. You knew where everybody was & who they were, Which was astonishingly good !."

Morrissey had wanted the event to be a farewell Smiths concert as backing Moz were ex-band members Mike Joyce, Andy Rourke & Craig Gannon (Johnny declined).

(Moz Post-Wolverhampton Quotes)
'It was nice to be kissed repeatedly, In the hall that night there was a great aura of love & gentleness, All the people who came on stage treated me in a very gentle way. I wasn't kicked, punched or dragged, Although they were very emotionally charged, I came away with no bruises'.
"There was a radiant feeling on-stage. You knew where everybody was & who they were, Which was astonishingly good !."

Hi Ho Wolverhampton! Used at every home game.
You're everywhere and no where, baby,
thats where you're at,
Going down a bumpy hillside,
In your hippy hat.
Flying out across the country
And getting fat
Saying everything is groovy
When your tyres are flat
And its HI - HO WOLVERHAPTON!!
and away you go now baby,
I see your sun is shining
But I wont make a fuss
Though its obvious.
Flies are in your pea soup baby,
They're waving at me
Anything you want is yours now
Only nothing is for free.
Lies are gonna get you some day
Just wait and see.
So open up your beach umbrella
While you are watching TV
And its HI - HO WOLVERHAMPTON!!
and away you go now baby,
I see your sun is shining
But I wont make a fuss
Though its obvious.
And its HI - HO WOLVERHAMPTON!!

Like the club's state-of-the-art training facilities, the stadium offers the ideal backdrop for Barclays Premier League football.
It remains a hive of activity all-year round as the club's directors and staff ensure everything is in place to remain competitive year after year in the biggest league in the world.

Ghost stations is the usual English translation for the German word Geisterbahnhöfe. This term was used to describe certain stations on Berlin's U-Bahn and S-Bahn metro networks that were closed during the period of Berlin's division during the Cold War. Since then, the term has come to be used to describe any disused station on an underground railway line, especially those actively passed through by passenger trains.
An abandoned (or disused) railway station is a building or structure which was constructed to serve as a railway station but has fallen into disuse. There are various circumstances when this may occur - a railway company may fall bankrupt, or the station may be closed due to the failure of economic activitiy such as insufficient passenger numbers, operational reasons such as the diversion or replacement of the line. In some instances, the railway line may continue in operation while the station is closed. Additionally, stations may sometimes be resited along the route of the line to new premises - examples of this include opening a replacement station nearer to the centre of population, or building a larger station on a less restricted site to cope with high passenger numbers.
Notable cases where railway stations have fallen into disuse include the Beeching Axe, a 1960s programme of mass closures of unprofitable railway lines by the British Government. The London Underground system is also noted for its list of closed stations. During the time of the Berlin Wall, a number of Berlin U-Bahn stations on West Berlin lines became "ghost stations" (Geisterbahnhöfe) because they were on lines which passed through East Berlin territory.
Railway stations and lines which fall into disuse may become overgrown. Some former railway lines are repurposed as managed nature reserves, trails or other tourist attractions - for example Hellfire Pass, the route of the former "Death Railway" in Thailand. Many former railways are converted into long-distance cycleways, such as large sections of the National Cycle Network in the United Kingdom. In rural areas, former railway station buildings are often converted into private residences. Examples include many of the stations on the closed Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway in England.
Architecturally and historically notable station buildings may present a problem if they are protected under building preservation laws but fall into disuse. Such buildings are often simply demolished (such as Broad Street railway station (London); a similar fate threatens Michigan Central Station), or they may be preserved as part of a heritage railway. Often, in order to be retained as commercially viable structures within an urban environment, or as part of an urban regeneration project, they may be repurposed for alternative activities. Prominent examples include the ornate Gare d'Orsay in Paris, France, which was converted into the Musée d'Orsay art gallery; and Manchester Central railway station which was put to new use first as a car park, and later refurbished as the Manchester Central Conference Centre. The Ottawa Convention Centre is a former station, as are railway museums Memory Junction in Brighton and Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario in Smiths Falls. In Prescott the rail station houses historical society offices; in Lac-Mégantic and Kingston a former station houses a tourism information office. Stations have also been transformed into restaurants or private residences.
Many abandoned railway stations and line are now being brought back into operational service, notably in the UK where environmental policy is driving the reversal of some of the Beeching closures of the 1960s. In London the Docklands Light Railway made use of disused railway infrastructure for much of its construction; in Manchester it is proposed to expand the Metrolink light rail system by re-opening abandoned rail lines; and in Scotland, the Scottish Government has plans to bring the Waverley Line back into passenger service.

Wolverhampton: Goodyear closes tyre factory with 330 job losses
Tyre company Goodyear has announced plans to close its only UK manufacturing plant.
All 330 workers at the Wolverhampton site are expected to lose their jobs.
The US company, which plans to transfer the site's operations elsewhere, said the move would "strengthen its competitiveness in the face of a challenging business environment".
MPs and councillors called on Goodyear to reconsider. Unions said the decision was "shameful".
'Really bad news'
Goodyear said its plans were subject to consultation with staff and unions.
It said it was "determined to find responsible and fair solutions for all affected employees".
"The proposed actions are needed to help strengthen competitiveness in the face of a challenging business environment, increased competition and currency headwinds," the company said.
The firm said it was improving efficiency by transferring the production of commercial retreaded tyres and compound mixing carried out at Wolverhampton to other plants in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Increasing competition
Erich Fric, managing director of Goodyear Dunlop Tyres UK, said: "We understand the impact the closure of Wolverhampton would have.
"We will honour our responsibilities and will do everything we can to support all employees who are affected.
"In the face of ever-increasing competition, we carefully considered several options.
"However we believe these proposals are needed to strengthen our competitiveness and ensure we have a sustainable business."
A spokesman for Goodyear said if the Wolverhampton factory does close, it would do so by the summer of 2017.
The company has been based in the city for almost 90 years. The Wolverhampton site is Goodyear's only manufacturing operation in the UK, although they have a head office in Birmingham.
Worldwide, Goodyear employs about 75,000 people with factories in the US, South America, Europe and Asia.
Labour MP for Wolverhampton North East, Emma Reynolds said: "It's really bad news for all of the people who work at the Wolverhampton factory and their families but also for the city because there are generations of people in Wolverhampton who have worked at the Goodyear factory.
"I am calling on the company to reconsider their decision."
Andy Taylor, regional officer for the Unite union, said the earliest redundancies could take place in October.
"It's a massive blow to the history of city as well as those who work here," he said.
"There has been a lot of investment here and workers have worked hard to turn things round. This is shameful."
Peter Bilson, deputy leader of Wolverhampton City Council, said: "This is extremely disappointing news and we are seeking an urgent meeting with the company.
"While we recognise Goodyear is a global business that has to make global decisions, we would urge the company, which has a deep-rooted history with the city, to reconsider this decision."
Professor David Bailey, professor of industry from Aston Business School, said the news was "not a shock".
"The plant had become increasingly isolated. The big investments had been taking place elsewhere," he said.
"It's going to be a blow for the workers but this has been a long-running process."

Wolverhampton 76 - all change
Wolverhampton 76 - all change

Myself & Harry Rhodes (Two of the 'Four Amigos') took a trip up to this crazy looking transmitter.........We are NOT saying it is anything particular but what we are asking is WHAT organisations are using this mammoth and unsightly beast? Police with TETRA? The MET Office? Local radio? Mobile phone companies? PRIVATE Corporations? Well, there is radiation on this site so somebody knows............
And here are the answers!!!
Here are links to the transmitter site on Turners hill that me and Harry went too
