Don Quixote (/ˌdɒnkiːˈhoʊtiː/; Spanish: [ˈdoŋ kiˈxote] (listen)), fully titled The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha (Spanish: El ingenioso hidalgo don Quixote de la Mancha), is a novel written by Miguel de Cervantes. The novel follows the adventures of Alonso Quijano, who reads too many chivalric novels, and sets out to revive chivalry under the name of Don Quixote. He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who frequently deals with Don Quixote's rhetorical orations on antiquated knighthood with a unique Earthy wit. He is met by the world as it is, initiating themes like Intertextuality, Realism, Metatheatre and Literary Representation.
Published in two volumes a decade apart, in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote is considered the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon. As a founding work of modern Western literature, and one of the earliest canonical novels, it regularly appears high on lists of the greatest works of fiction ever published. In one such list, Don Quixote was cited as the "best literary work ever written".

Carlos Acosta, Principal Guest Artist of The Royal Ballet, created his first work for the Company in 2013. He chose one of his favourite ballets – Marius Petipa's Don Quixote, a joyful adaptation of Miguel de Cervantes's classic novel. Acosta's production has proved itself a firm audience favourite, acclaimed for its breathtakingly virtuoso dancing, eye-popping designs by Tim Hatley and the sheer energy and exuberance of the production as a whole.
The adventures of the bumbling knight Don Quixote and his ever-faithful squire Sancho Panza have been the inspiration for countless ballets, of which Petipa's is one of the best loved. Acosta has danced the virtuoso role of Basilio many times, and brings that experience to his unique and vibrant vision of the story. Ludwig Minkus's score, created for Petipa, is full of Spanish flair and atmosphere. Don Quixote, with its famously bravura Act III pas de deux and infectious ebullience, is wonderfully entertaining.

The Sleeping Beauty: The challenges of technically demanding roles (The Royal Ballet)
Sarah Lamb, Steven McRae and Alexander Agadzhanov on how technically demanding the two lead roles are in The Sleeping Beauty. Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/sleepingbeauty
The Sleeping Beauty holds a special place in The Royal Ballet's repertory. It was the ballet with which the Company reopened the Royal Opera House in 1946 after World War II, announcing its move from Sadler's Wells to Covent Garden. Margot Fonteyn danced the role of the beautiful princess Aurora in the first performance, with Robert Helpmann as Prince Florimund. Sixty years later, in 2006, the original 1946 staging was revived, returning Oliver Messel's wonderful designs and glittering costumes to the stage once again.
Marius Petipa's classic 19th-century choreography is combined with newly created sections by Frederick Ashton, Anthony Dowell and Christopher Wheeldon. The ballet contains many memorable moments, from the iconic Rose Adagio, when Aurora meets her four royal suitors, to the vigorous hunting dances and the famous waltz for Aurora and her Prince. Throughout, Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky's score conveys passion and intensity.

'Life is not a series of gig-lamps symmetrically arranged; life is a luminous halo, a semi-transparent envelope surrounding us from the beginning of consciousness to the end… the proper stuff of fiction is a little other than custom would have us believe it.’ – Virginia Woolf, Modern Fiction
Multi-award-winning choreographer Wayne McGregor has long been at the cutting edge of choreography. He has won widespread acclaim for collaborative works that often extend far beyond the familiar boundaries of ballet. For this new production McGregor enmeshes themes from Virginia Woolf's landmark novels, including Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves, with elements of her letters, essays and diaries. Woolf Works expresses the heart of an artistic life driven to discover a freer, uniquely modern realism, and brings to life Woolf’s world of 'granite and rainbow' where human beings are at once both physical body and uncontained essence. This is McGregor’s first full-length production for The Royal Ballet and sees him reunited with acclaimed British composer Max Richter (Infra and Sum), who creates a specially commissioned score incorporating electronic and live music.

Kenneth MacMillan's Manon short rehearsal - World Ballet Day 2014 (The Royal Ballet)
Royal Ballet Principals Marianela Nuñez and Federico Bonelli rehearse the final pas de deux from Kenneth MacMillan's Manon. You can see this rehearsal in full in our Manon Digital Programme: http://www.roh.org.uk/publications/manon-digital-programme
Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/manon
Kenneth MacMillan began work on Manon shortly after the birth of his only daughter. His source was the 18th-century French novel by Abbé Prévost, already adapted twice for opera by Massenet and Puccini. Renowned dance musician Leighton Lucas and his assistant Hilda Gaunt provided a score made from a patchwork of works by Massenet, including his famous yearning Elégie as the theme for the lovers. The premiere was given on 7 March 1974, the lead roles of Manon and Des Grieux danced by Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell. The ballet quickly became a staple of The Royal Ballet's repertory.
MacMillan found new sympathy with the capricious Manon, bringing his customary psychological insight and the memories of his own impoverished upbringing. He described his heroine as 'not so much afraid of being poor as ashamed of being poor'. Designs by MacMillan's friend Nicholas Georgiadis reflect this, depicting a world of lavish splendour polluted by miserable poverty. MacMillan's spectacular ensemble scenes for the whole Company create vivid, complex portraits of the distinct societies of Paris and New Orleans. But it is Manon and Des Grieux's impassioned pas de deux – recalling the intensity of MacMillan's earlier work, Romeo and Juliet – that drive this tragic story, and make Manon one of MacMillan's most heartbreaking dramas.

Kenneth MacMillan first heard Gustav Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde in 1958. He immediately fell in love with Mahler's elegiac masterpiece and in 1959 asked if he could use the piece in a new commission for The Royal Ballet. But the ROH Board refused, concerned that such a major musical work was not suitable accompaniment for ballet. It wasn't until 1965 that MacMillan was able to create his Song of the Earth, for Stuttgart Ballet on the invitation of his friend John Cranko. The ballet was instantly acclaimed, recognized as MacMillan's arrival into full maturity as a choreographer. The Royal Ballet took the piece into their repertory only six months after its Stuttgart premiere.
MacMillan introduced a narrative thread to the piece's six movements, drawing on imagery from Hans Bethge's free translation of the six T'ang-dynasty poems that Mahler used. Marcia Haydée created the role of the woman, a figure of loneliness isolated from the movements of the corps de ballet around her. The man was created by Ray Barra, and the Messenger of Death by Egon Madsen, then only 23 years old. In MacMillan's hands Death becomes not a figure of evil but a gentle, ever-present companion. Earthbound, non-classical movements morph seamlessly into modernist curves in a work of breathtaking beauty and power.

http://www.roh.org.uk/productions/romeo-and-juliet-by-kenneth-macmillan
Kenneth MacMillan brings a contemporary interpretation to Sergei Prokofiev's classic score. His version of the ballet draws out the emotional and psychological intensity at the heart of the tale. Romeo and Juliet contains three passionate pas de deux: from the lovers' first meeting and the famous balcony scene to the devastating final tragedy. The lovers' story is set against a wonderful evocation of 16th-century Verona: a bustling market place erupts into a violent sword fight and a lavish ball is held at an elegant mansion.
MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet first arrived at Covent Garden in 1965. Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn took the title roles. The performance received a rapturous reception, with 43 curtain calls and almost fotry minutes of applause. It has been at the heart of the Company’s repertory ever since, amassing more than four hundred performances. This classic production has been toured around the world. It was recently adapted for arena-scale performances at the O2 Arena, keeping MacMillan’s vision powerfully alive in the 21st century.

Symphonic Variations in the rehearsal room (The Royal Ballet)
Royal Ballet Principals Marianela Nuñez and Vadim Muntagirov perform a section of Frederick Ashton's Symphonic Variations. Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/productions/symphonic-variations-by-frederick-ashton
Symphonic Variations was Frederick Ashton's first work after returning from his RAF posting during World War II. It was one of the Company's first works for the huge main stage of the Royal Opera House, and Ashton and his designer Sophie Fedorovitch agonized over ways to make sure the ballet would register to the back of the enormous auditorium. The result, first performed on 21 April 1946, became a cornerstone of The Royal Ballet's repertory and is acclaimed as one of Ashton's very finest works.
The ballet is for just six dancers, who never leave the stage. In perfect response to César Franck's brooding Variations symphoniques for piano and orchestra the dancers coalesce in a series of quartets, duets, sextets and solos. The flow of dancing quickens and slows but retains throughout a sense of serenity and spaciousness – a hint at the mysticism and spirituality Ashton had studied during World War II, and which had a clear impact on his choreography.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - The Caterpillar (The Royal Ballet)
Sarah Lamb as Alice and Eric Underwood, Christina Arestis, Olivia Cowley, Melissa Hamilton and Nathalie Harrison as the Caterpillar in Christopher Wheeldon's ballet Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Recorded for cinema broadcast on 28 March 2013.
Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/productions/alice
Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland arrived on the stage in 2011 with a burst of colour, theatrical magic and inventive choreography. It was The Royal Ballet’s first new full-length work since 1995 and was greeted with delight by audiences. Joby Talbot’s score combines contemporary soundworlds with sweeping melodies that gesture to ballet scores of the 19th century. Bob Crowley’s wildly imaginative sets and costumes draw on puppetry, projections and masks to make Wonderland wonderfully real.
Alice encounters a cast of extraordinary characters, from the highly-strung Queen of Hearts, who performs a hilarious send-up of The Sleeping Beauty's famous Rose Adage, to dancing playing cards, a sinuous caterpillar and a tap-dancing Mad Hatter. Alice and the Knave of Hearts dance a tender, loving pas de deux of delicate beauty. But the ballet does not avoid the darker undercurrents of Lewis Carroll’s story – a nightmarish kitchen, an eerily disembodied Cheshire Cat and the unhinged tea party are all created in vivid detail.al Ballet as the Caterpillar in Christopher Wheeldon's ballet Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, cinema broadcast on 28 March 2013.

Natalia Osipova, Matthew Golding and the corps de ballet on Swan Lake (The Royal Ballet)
A look at the roles of the principal dancers and the corps de ballet in The Royal Ballet's Swan Lake.
Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/swanlake
Swan Lake was Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky's first score for ballet. Its 1877 premiere was poorly received, but it has since become one of the most loved of all ballets. The twinned role of the radiant White Swan and the scheming, duplicitous Black Swan tests the full range of a ballerina's powers, particularly in the two great pas de deux of Acts II and III. Other highlights include the charming Dance of the Little Swans performed by a moonlit lake and sweeping ballroom waltzes in the splendour of the royal palace.
Anthony Dowell's glorious interpretation uses classical choreography created by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa for the ballet's revised 1895 version. Dramatic costumes emphasize the contrast between human and spirit worlds, while glowing lanterns, shimmering fabrics and designs inspired by the work of Peter Carl Fabergé create a magical setting.

Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker score was commissioned by the director of the Russian Imperial Theatres, following the resounding success of Sleeping Beauty in 1890. Marius Petipa created the scenario – based on a fairytale by E. T. A. Hoffman – and Lev Ivanov provided the choreography. The Nutcracker was first performed in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. It initially had a poor reception, but its combination of enchanting choreography and an unforgettable score have since made it one of the best-loved of all ballets.
In Peter Wright's classic production, the stage sparkles with theatrical magic – a Christmas tree grows before our eyes, toy soldiers come to life to fight the villainous Mouse King and Clara is whisked to the Land of Sweets on a golden sleigh. Tchaikovsky's score contains some of the best-known melodies in ballet, from the flurrying sounds of the Waltz of the Snowflakes to the dream-like Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the vigorous Russian Dance. Julia Trevelyan Oman's designs draw upon 19th-century images of Christmas, making this a classic production for the festive season.

Members of The Royal Ballet introduce Frederick Ashton's La Fille mal gardée.
http://www.roh.org.uk/productions/la-fille-mal-gardee-by-frederick-ashton
Frederick Ashton's final full-length ballet La Fille mal gardée (The Wayward Daughter) is one of his most joyous creations, inspired by his love for the Suffolk countryside. It is based on an 1828 French ballet and the music was adapted by John Lanchbery from Ferdinand Hérold's original score. La Fille mal gardée was a resounding success on its premiere in 1960 and has remained a firm favourite in The Royal Ballet's repertory.
La Fille displays some of Ashton's most virtuoso choreography – the youthful passion of Lise and her lover, Colas, is expressed in a series of energetic pas de deux. The ballet is laced with good humour and a whirl of dancing chickens, grouchy guardians and a halfwit suitor take to the stage. Ashton affectionately incorporated elements of national folk dance into his choreography, from a Lancashire clog dance to a maypole dance, making La Fille mal gardée (despite its title) The Royal Ballet's most emphatically English work. Osbert Lancaster's colourful designs reinforce the bucolic wit of the production.

Guest Principal Ballet Master Christopher Carr rehearses Frederick Ashton's The Dream with Marcelino Sambé and Luca Acri. Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/productions/the-dream-by-frederick-ashton
Frederick Ashton’s The Dream is based on William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The ballet had its premiere in 1964 as part of a Royal Ballet programme commemorating the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth. It was performed alongside Kenneth MacMillan’s Images of Love and Robert Helpmann’s Hamlet – both also based on works by Shakespeare. The roles of Oberon and Titania were created for Anthony Dowell and Antoinette Sibley, marking the beginning of their enduring and celebrated dance partnership.
Ashton captures all the comic confusion of Shakespeare’s play in inventive choreography. The high-spirited misadventures of the two pairs of mortal lovers combine with the humorous cavorting of Bottom, who dances en pointe after being transformed into an ass. The ballet culminates in a powerful pas de deux for Oberon and Titania, which moves through a stormy conflict of wills to a harmonious union. Felix Mendelssohn’s incidental music for the play, including the well-known Overture, Scherzo, Nocturne and Wedding March, provides a perfect partner to Ashton’s choreography.

Find out more at http://www.roh.org.uk/alice
But the ballet does not avoid the darker undercurrents of Lewis Carroll’s story – a nightmarish kitchen, an eerily disembodied Cheshire Cat and the unhinged tea party are all created in vivid detail.

Ballet Evolved: The Evolution of Pointe Work
Ballet Evolved: The Evolution of Pointe Work
Ballet Evolved: The Evolution of Pointe Work
Former Ballet Mistress Ursula Hageli looks at the development of pointe work in ballet, where the dancers move on the tips of their toes – from Marie Taglioni’s experiments in the 1830s, through developments by Italian and Russian dancers through to the famed pointe work of Russian Classical ballet. With danced demonstrations by Gemma Pitchley-Gale and Fumi Kaneko.
Ballet Evolved events explore the ballet through the centuries from its origins at the French court. It is one of a number of Insights held at the Royal Opera House. Find out more:

A tragic tale of star-crossed lovers: Kenneth MacMillan’s ground-breaking ballet is a 20th-century classic.

The production runs 19 September - 2 December 2015, and is live in cinemas across the globe and on BP Big Screens in the UK on 22 September 2015.

Kenneth MacMillan's poignant setting of Sergey Prokofiev’s classic score draws out the emotional and psychological intensity of the tale. Romeo and Juliet contains three passionate pas de deux: the lovers’ first meeting, the famous balcony scene and the devastating final tragedy, in which Romeo dances desperately with the lifeless Juliet. The story is set against a wonderful evocation of 16th-century Verona, and includes a bustling marketplace that erupts into a violent sword fight, and a lavish ball held in an elegant mansion.
MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet first arrived at Covent Garden in 1965. Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn took the title roles on the opening night – MacMillan had originally created the work on Lynn Seymour and Christopher Gable. Nevertheless, Fonteyn and Nureyev’s performance had a rapturous reception, with 43 curtain calls and almost forty minutes of applause. The ballet has been at the heart of the Company’s repertory ever since, amassing more than four hundred performances. This classic production has been toured around the world and in 2011 was adapted for arena-scale performances at the O2 Arena.

Giselle was a triumph. The ballet became hugely popular. It was staged at once across Europe, Russia, and the United States. The ballet is about a peasant girl named Giselle who dies of heart failure after discovering her lover is betrothed to another. The Wilis, a group of supernatural women who dance men to death, summon Giselle from her grave. They target her lover for death, but Giselle's great love frees him from their grasp. Librettists Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Théophile Gautier took their inspiration for the plot from a prose passage about the Wilis in De l'Allemagne by Heinrich Heine, and from a poem called "Fantômes" in Les Orientales by Victor Hugo. The prolific opera and ballet composer Adolphe Adam composed the music; Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot designed the choreography. The role of Giselle was intended for the Italian ballerina Carlotta Grisi as her debut piece for the Paris public. She became the first to dance the role, and was the only ballerina to dance the role at the Opèra for many years.

Wayne McGregor’s new full-length ballet is inspired by the works of Virginia Woolf, with an original score by Max Richter (Infra).

Royal National Ballet "Fire Of Georgia" სამეფო ნაციონალური ბალეტი "ქართული ცეცხლი"
The Royal National Ballet presents a world premiere of the newly staged performances. This is a first precedent of this kind of performance in the history of Georgian and world Choreography as it does not have an analogue. The performance has two parts, the first part is called a " Fire Of Georgian" and combines Georgian folk dances, with wonderful decorations and technical support.
50 Professional dancers will present the show, supported with the new musical entourage and supplementary slide show decorations.
New performance of the “Royal National Ballet” is different from any other performances in the world. It is complete innovation and novelty at the show market. The show unites world’s, folklore and classical dance elements, acrobatics, stunts, temperament, grace, synchrony, artistic, athletic boys and appealing girls. I would like also to inform you that the show includes 8 small dancers, who add beauty to the performance.

Memorable Treasures - Ballets - Adolphe Adam - Giselle (2006) Royal Paris Opera Ballet, 2006.
Giselle, or The Wilis (French: Giselle, ou Les Wilis) is a romantic ballet in two acts that was first performed by the Ballet du Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique at the Salle Le Peletier in Paris, France, on Sunday 28 June 1841.

Royal Ballet Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor, Dramaturg Uzma Hameed and Royal Ballet dancers Alessandra Ferri and Federico Bonelli discuss Woolf Works with writer Bonnie Greer. Find out more: http://www.roh.org.uk/productions/woolf-works-by-wayne-mcgregor
Wayne McGregor’s new full-length ballet is inspired by the works of Virginia Woolf, with an original score by Max Richter (Infra).
