The M1 is a north–south motorway in England connecting London to Leeds, where it joins the A1(M) near Aberford. It was the first inter-urban motorway to be completed in the United Kingdom; the first road to be built to motorway standard in the country was the Preston Bypass, which later became part of the M6.
The motorway is 193 miles (311 km) long and was constructed in four phases. Most of the motorway was opened between 1959 and 1968 but the southern end was extended in 1977 and the northern end was extended in 1999. It forms part of the unsigned European route E13.
The first motorways (autostrades) were built in Italy on the order of Benito Mussolini in the 1920s, with other countries subsequently following, notably Germany with the first 'autobahn' in 1931 and then developed by the Nazis under Adolf Hitler. There had been plans since before the Second World War for a motorway network in the United Kingdom. Lord Montagu formed a company to build a 'motorway like road' from London to Birmingham in 1923, however it was a further 26 years before the Special Roads Act 1949 was passed which allowed for the construction of roads limited to a limited vehicle classifications and the 1950s when the country's first motorways were given the government go-ahead. The first section of motorway was the Preston Bypass in Lancashire, which opened in 1958 (now part of the M6 motorway). The M1 was Britain's first full-length motorway and opened in 1959.

In just 15.5 hours the Highways Agency and its contractors (Armac, the demolition company, and Costain-Carrillion JV, the main contractor), closed the M1 motorway in Bedfordshire, and prepared it for the demolition of the old A5120 road bridge, built in 1959. Demolition kicked off at 2115 on the Saturday night (30 June 2012), with the hydraulic breakers making short work of the concrete and steel structure. The M1 was fully re-opened from 1130 the following morning - 30 minutes ahead of schedule. The bridge was demolished as part of the improvements at junction 12 (Toddington/Dunstable), being delivered within the M1 J10 to J13 managed motor -

This fire on the M1 took six engines, and an additional water bowser, to get under control. The trailer's load became liquified in the extreme heat, and spread across all three lanes. You also get to hear the noise that Bella (the new ZX9R) makes, and see a couple of miles of motorway filterage (and get to have a look at some of the things that people do when they're hanging around on the motorway, not going anywhere). -

The new schemes are part of a £24billion investment in motorways and major A roads by 2021. Once completed the M1 will be four lanes from junction 25 to junction 35a, except across Tinsley Viaduct which increases from two lanes to three. -

A southbound trip on the M1 Motorway, from the A50/A6 at junction 24 near Nottingham to Leicester Forest East Service Station.
The M1 is one of the two backbone north-south motorways in the UK. The section from St Albans to Junction 18 had been the first intercity motorway in the UK when it opened in 1959. The first extension to the M1 up to junction 24 opened 6 years later in November 1965 and it is this section which features in the video.

How to demolish a 1400 tonne bridge over the M1

In just 15.5 hours the Highways Agency and its contractors (Armac, the demolition company, and Costain-Carrillion JV, the main contractor), closed the M1 motorway in Bedfordshire, and prepared it for the demolition of the old A5120 road bridge, built in 1959. Demolition kicked off at 2115 on the Saturday night (30 June 2012), with the hydraulic breakers making short work of the concrete and steel structure. The M1 was fully re-opened from 1130 the following morning - 30 minutes ahead of schedule.
The bridge was demolished as part of the improvements at junction 12 (Toddington/Dunstable), being delivered within the M1 J10 to J13 managed motorway scheme.

You also get to hear the noise that Bella (the new ZX9R) makes, and see a couple of miles of motorway filterage (and get to have a look at some of the things that people do when they're hanging around on the motorway, not going anywhere).

A southbound trip on the M1 Motorway, from the A50/A6 at junction 24 near Nottingham to Leicester Forest East Service Station. The M1 is one of the two backbone north-south motorways in the UK. The section from St Albans to Junction 18 had been the first intercity motorway in the UK when it opened in 1959. The first extension to the M1 up to junction 24 opened 6 years later in November 1965 and it is this section which features in the video. How to demolish a 1400 tonne bridge over the M1
How to demolish a 1400 tonne bridge over the M1
In just 15.5 hours the Highways Agency and its contractors (Armac, the demolition company, and Costain-Carrillion JV, the main contractor), closed the M1 motorway in Bedfordshire, and prepared it for the demolition of the old A5120 road bridge, built in 1959. Demolition kicked off at 2115 on the Saturday night (30 June 2012), with the hydraulic breakers making short work of the concrete and steel structure. The M1 was fully re-opened from 1130 the following morning - 30 minutes ahead of schedule. The bridge was demolished as part of the improvements at junction 12 (Toddington/Dunstable), being delivered within the M1 J10 to J13 managed motorway scheme. The aircraft was attempting to conduct an emergency landing at East Midlands Airport. Of the 126 people aboard, 47 died and 74, including seven members of the flight crew, sustained serious injuries.
