The Lake District, also commonly known as The Lakes, is a mountainous region in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous not only for its lakes and its mountains (or fells) but also for its associations with the early 19th century poetry and writings of William Wordsworth and the other Lake Poets.
The majority of the area was designated as the Lake District National Park in 1951. It is the largest of the thirteen National Parks in England and Wales, and the second largest in the UK (after the Cairngorms). It lies entirely within the modern county of Cumbria, shared historically by the counties of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire. All the land in England higher than three thousand feet above sea level lies within the National Park, including Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. It also contains the deepest and longest lakes in England, Wastwater and Windermere, respectively.
The precise extent of the Lake District was not defined traditionally but is approximated by the boundary of the National Park, the total area of which is about 885 square miles (2,292 km2). The Park extends just over 32 miles (52 km) from east to west and nearly 40 miles (64 km) from north to south, with areas such as the Lake District Peninsulas to the south lying outside the National Park.

Our video is a guided walk in the Lake District from Ambleside to Wansfell Pike via Stockghyll Force. We then make our way to Troutbeck and return to Ambleside via Robin Lane and Skelghyll Wood. This is a moderate to hard walk on easy to follow paths and tracks. The inclines and declines are moderate except the incline up to Wansfell Pike is very steep, including some steps. Buttermere is one of the more remote valleys and the hills above it - Red Pike, High Stile and High Crag - are for me one of the best places for Lake District walks. The valley is beautiful too with options for low level walking beside Buttermere and Crummock Water.
From the ridge I show you wonderful views of Grasmoor, Dale Head, Fleetwith Pike, Great Gable, the Scafells and Pillar. This was spring 2013 but still winter conditions including minus two temperatures at night.

Our video is a guided walk in the Lake District from Ambleside to Wansfell Pike via Stockghyll Force. We then make our way to Troutbeck and return to Ambleside via Robin Lane and Skelghyll Wood. This is a moderate to hard walk on easy to follow paths and tracks. The inclines and declines are moderate except the incline up to Wansfell Pike is very steep, including some steps.
Elevation: approx lowest point 50.30m (165ft) approx highest point 462m (1515.75ft). Approx 6.5 miles allow 3 to 4 hours using OS Explorer Map OL7, The English Lakes, South-eastern area and OL5, The English Lakes, North-eastern area.
Start point: Ambleside main car park on Rydal Road. Pay and Display £7 for all day. For more info and facilities please see our website.
