Richard "Dick" Turpin (bap. 1705 – 7 April 1739) was an English highwayman whose exploits were romanticised following his execution in York for horse theft. Turpin may have followed his father's profession as a butcher early in life, but by the early 1730s he had joined a gang of deer thieves, and later became a poacher, burglar, horse thief and murderer. He is also known for a fictional 200-mile (320 km) overnight ride from London to York on his horse Black Bess, a story that was made famous by the Victorian novelist William Harrison Ainsworth almost 100 years after Turpin's death.
Turpin's involvement in the crime for which he is most closely associated—highway robbery—followed the arrest of the other members of his gang in 1735. He then disappeared from public view towards the end of that year, only to resurface in 1737 with two new accomplices, one of whom he may have accidentally shot and killed. Turpin fled from the scene and shortly afterwards killed a man who attempted his capture. Later that year he moved to Yorkshire and assumed the alias of John Palmer. While he was staying at an inn, local magistrates became suspicious of "Palmer", and made enquiries as to how he funded his lifestyle. Suspected of being a horse thief, "Palmer" was imprisoned in York Castle, to be tried at the next assizes. Turpin's true identity was revealed by a letter he wrote to his brother-in-law from his prison cell, which fell into the hands of the authorities. On 22 March 1739 Turpin was found guilty on two charges of horse theft and sentenced to death; he was executed on 7 April 1739.

A whipping boy was a young boy who was assigned to a young prince and was punished when the prince misbehaved or fell behind in his schooling. Whipping boys were established in the English court during the monarchies of the 15th century and 16th centuries. They were created because of the idea of the divine right of kings, which stated that kings were appointed by God, and implied that no one but the king was worthy of punishing the king’s son. Since the king was rarely around to punish his son when necessary, tutors to the young prince found it extremely difficult to enforce rules or learning.
Whipping boys were generally of high status, and were educated with the prince from birth. Because the prince and whipping boy grew up together they usually formed a strong emotional bond, especially since the prince usually did not have playmates as other children would have had. The strong bond that developed between a prince and his whipping boy dramatically increased the effectiveness of using a whipping boy as a form of punishment for a prince. The idea of the whipping boys was that seeing a friend being whipped or beaten for something that he had done wrong would be likely to ensure that the prince would not make the same mistake again.

Plot: Dick enters a village by moonlight and by standing on his horse unfastens a latticed window of a house, creeps into the bedroom, and an old woman in fear and trembling of the pistol leveled at her, wisely hands over her valuables. The highwayman is at an inn drinking with a confederate, when he is surprised by a number of mounted constables, who are after him. A struggle ensues but Dick, helped by a pretty barmaid, is successful in making his escape. An exciting chase through the country. Dick holds up a coach, scares the occupants, and rides off. The coach has not proceeded far, when it is again stopped, this time by the constables, who are anxious to learn the whereabouts of "The Knight of the Road." An exchange is made with one of the passengers, who, knowing the country well, is eager to assist: The pursuers have to change horses, because their animals are distressed. Dick stops at an inn for refreshment when he hears his pursuers approaching. The landlord argues and tries to disarm their suspicions, but they rush past him in time to see their prey vanish through the back door. They tear furiously after him. Clearing a high toll-gate, Dick leaves the officers far behind. They are further hindered by the toll-keeper, who insists upon his full dues before opening the gate. The highwayman meets a pretty maiden, and with kisses seals her promise to mislead the constables. While they are galloping along in quite a wrong direction, Dick encounters a friend in distress, with whom he generously shares his plunder. The final scene shows the death of his famous horse, "Black Bess," and Dick is heart-broken at the loss of his faithful friend and companion.
