Iraq launches offensive to take back Tikrit from ISIL
#Iraqi military sources say the #ISIL militants have gained control of two districts in the northern city of #Sinjar. The #terrorists are said to have surrounded civilian houses there. The #Kurdish Peshmerga forces defending Sinjar are trying to stop the militants' advancement. #Izadi military officials have called on the Iraqi government to provide them with arms and secure the aerial space over Sinjar Mountains. The ISIL terrorists, who currently control parts of Syria and Iraq, have committed widespread acts of violence in both countries. The group has been fighting against the Iraqi army and volunteer forces, for nearly six months now. Iraqi government forces say they have retaken some districts around Tikrit in their fight to recapture the city from Islamic State (IS). A force of about 30,000 troops and militia are said to be attacking on different fronts, backed by air strikes from Iraqi jets. A commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards is taking part in the operation, a Shia militia commander told the BBC. Tikrit, north of the capital Baghdad, fell to IS militants last June. Security sources told the BBC that pro-government troops had seized control of the two districts of al-Tin, near Tikrit university north-east of the city, and the district of al-Abeid, in the west. Earlier, fighting was also reported in al-Dour, south-east of Tikrit, as well as in al-Alam, north of the city, and nearby Qadisiya. There were few details of the operation but army and medical sources were quoted as saying that five soldiers and 11 militia fighters had been killed. The Pentagon said that the US was not providing any air power in support of the operation. A senior official told reporters: "This is Iraq, this is their country, their military, their fight against Isil (IS)." Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared the start of the operation late on Sunday, as tens of thousands of troops and militia massed in the central town of Samarra. Tikrit, in Salahuddin province, lies on the road to Mosul - Iraq's second city which was also seized by IS last year. Correspondents say the current operation is crucial to any Iraqi plans to retake Mosul. line Analysis by Jim Muir, BBC Middle East Correspondent There were early claims of rapid advances being made as government forces pushed towards Tikrit from several directions. But previous assaults on the militants there have been beaten back despite claims of victory by the state forces, so it will be some time before the fate of this latest offensive becomes clear. It is a battle of great importance. Both the Iraqi prime minister and the Americans have been heralding an even more significant push in the coming months to recapture the biggest city in northern Iraq, Mosul, which also fell to IS last June. That campaign would be thrown into doubt if the government fails at Tikrit, which controls the strategic highway linking the south with the north. Campaign key to rolling back IS advance line Iraqi forces are being helped by Iran's Gen Qasem Soleimani, commander of the Revolutionary Guard's Quds Force, Iranian and Iraqi media reported. Since the IS advance across Iraq last summer, Gen Soleimani has personally overseen the defence of Baghdad and helped to organise pro-Iranian Shia militia. He has been pictured visiting the front lines north of the capital on several occasions. Tikrit is the hometown of deposed leader Saddam Hussein and was seized last year by IS militants backed by anti-government Sunni allies loyal to Saddam's banned Baath party. Iraq is split between a Sunni Muslim minority, many of whom supported Saddam Hussein, and the Shia Muslim majority. Since Saddam was toppled, Sunnis have felt increasingly marginalised by the Shia-led government in Baghdad. Shia militia have done much of the fighting against IS militants - who adhere to an extreme interpretation of Sunni Islam - but have also been accused of killing scores of Sunni civilians in apparent revenge attacks. On Sunday, Mr al-Abadi offered to pardon all Sunni tribal fighters "who have been misled or committed a mistake to lay down arms" and abandon IS. He described it as a "last chance", saying that the city of Tikrit would soon be returned to its people. IS militants hold several areas of Salahuddin, a predominantly Sunni Muslim province.http://youtube.com/c/videosaya

Iraq Moves Against Islamic State In Tikrit Iraq Moves to Reclaim Tikrit From Islamic State Iraq has launched a military operation to recapture Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit from Islamic State (IS), Iraqi TV says. Local media reported that forces were attacking the city, backed by airstrikes from Iraqi fighter jets. Tikrit lies 150km (95 miles) north of the capital Baghdad and was seized by IS militants in June 2014. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi met military leaders in Salahuddin province ahead of the advance. He offered to pardon all Sunni tribal fighters who abandoned IS, describing it as a "last chance". Al-Iraqiya TV said that IS militants had been dislodged from some areas outside Tikrit but this has not been confirmed. It added that Iraqi police and militiamen from the Popular Mobilization Forces were advancing into Tikrit as airstrikes hit IS strongholds. The BBC's Ahmed Maher in Iraq says that government forces say they are 5km away from the heart of the city, but this has not been confirmed from independent sources. Correspondent says that regaining control of Tikrit would be a boost to government forces ahead of the larger battle for the recapture of the city of Mosul, which is also controlled by IS. Mr Abadi declared the start of the operation late on Sunday, as tens of thousands of troops and militia gathered in the central town of Samarra in preparation for the offensive. Mr al-Abadi called on those "who have been misled or committed a mistake to lay down arms and join their people and security forces in order to liberate their cities". He added that the city of Tikrit would soon return to its people. Tikrit, hometown of former President Saddam Hussein, was the second major gain for IS after the group captured the city of Mosul in June last year. IS militants hold several areas of Salahuddin, a predominantly Sunni Muslim province. Mosul was home to more than a million people when it fell to IS after the militants launched an offensive in northern Iraq that saw it seize large swathes of the country. Soldiers and allied Shia militiamen have now begun to recapture territory from IS north of Baghdad, with the help of US-led coalition air strikes. At the same time, Kurdish peshmerga forces have been making advances around Mosul.
U.S. Special Forces In Intense Night Time Combat Operations In Sadr City Iraq | Second Iraq War. U.S. Special Forces and in some parts supported by Iraqi Special Forces in intense night time raids against insurgents in Sadr City Iraq. Most of the operations conducted in this video aimed to capture high ranked militias in the area of Bagdath but also some hostage rescure operations are featured in this clip. The most intese part at the end of the video shows an intense night time firefight raid through Sadr city that was recorded during the capture of several insurgents and was held out on an undisclosed date/time during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The mission was interfered after heavy resistance and fighting when two blackhawks were hit during the combat action and no further footage of the operation was declassified due to this. This video gives an deep look into combat operations held out by special forces in enemy territory and shows very well how fierce the combat in Iraq was during that time. Sadr City is a suburb district of the city of Baghdad, Iraq that was built in 1959. Sadr City (or more accurately Thawra District) is one of nine administrative districts in Baghdad. A public housing project neglected by Saddam Hussein, Sadr City holds around 1 million residents. The suburb was place of heavy fighting during the times of 2003-2008. raq has launched a military offensive against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in the latest attempt to oust the armed group from the strategic province of Salaheddin, which includes the ancient city of Tikrit. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abbadi arrived on Sunday in the northern city of Samarra in Salaheddin to oversee the military operation, and vowed to "liberate" the province "from the tyranny of the terrorists". Thousands of government troops, fighters from Shia militia and Sunni tribes have gathered around Samarra for the operation in the nearby strongholds of ISIL near the Tigris River, Al Jazeera has learned. Iraq's military also told Reuters news agency that around 2,000 Shia militia fighters have arrived near Tikrit in preparation for the major operation. Raed Jabouri, governor of Salaheddin, had said last week that 5,000 fighters from the security forces and Hashid Shaabi militia, which was formed last year with Iranian support, would join the operation. Al Jazeera's Jane Arraf, reporting from Baghdad, said that "this is one of the biggest military operations that will eventually proceed to take back Mosul," referring to city of Nineveh province, which is the stronghold of ISIL. Our correspondent said that US air strikes are also expected to provide back-up for the Iraqi troops on the ground. "This is not expected to be an easy fight," she said. "ISIL has dug in there." In his speech in Samarra, Abbadi warned the troops to "secure the safety of all of our civilians" as they move towards the north to Mosul. Preemptive strike Ahead of the ground operation, ISIL fighters launched on Saturday preemptive strikes against targets in Samarra, where security forces and their allies have been gathering for the offensive. Security sources and residents said that two ISIL suicide bombers blew up their cars in the northern area of Sur Shnas. At the same time a man drove a Humvee rigged with explosives into the south of the city and detonated it, while ISIL fighters attacked security forces to the west with sniper fire, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades. Medical sources told Reuters that Samarra hospital received the bodies of 14 Shia fighters and policemen. Residents reported seeing black smoke over parts of the city and hearing powerful explosions. After heavy clashes in the morning, the fighting appeared to have subsided by the afternoon. The army shelled northern and western districts of Tikrit on Saturday, but did not send troops into the city, security sources said. Earlier, witnesses said that ISIL have also blocked three main entrances to the south, west and north of Tikrit with four-metre concrete blast walls. They also covered a bridge across the Tigris with about one metre of sand in the hope of absorbing the impact of the bombs. After months of air strikes by the United States and its Western and Arab allies, ISIL is on the defensive in several parts of the "caliphate" it declared in swathes of Iraq and Syria. In Diyala, adjoining Iran, officials said they have all but driven ISIL out. But ISIL attacks in Diyala killed 21 in a twin car bombing in the town of Balad Roz on Saturday. One of those killed was a judge, security and medical sources said.

Time now for a look through the global headlines we′re following this Tuesday lunchtime. For that, we turn to Eunice Kim, standing by at the NewsCenter. Eunice... A major offensive is underway in Iraq... to take back the strategic city of Tikrit... from Islamic State militants. Right Jinjoo. It′s a massive operation with a force numbering in the tens of thousands... and victory would be crucial in future plans to retake Mosul, Iraq′s second largest city also under I-S control. Sohn Jung-in has the story. The thunderous sound of artillery and warplanes were heard outside Tikrit as Iraqi forces attacked Islamic State strongholds in the northern province of Salahuddin. "We prepared these weapons to dislodge the extremists from Tikrit." The Iraqi prime minister ordered forces to regain the territory and to avoid killing civilians. "Our goal is to release the ordinary people from oppression and terror threats from IS. We must protect the lives of civilians and the property in the city." The massive operation to retake Tikrit from the IS group is reportedly made up of some 30,000 soldiers. The Saddam Hussein′s hometown fell into the hands of the extremist group last summer. The Iraqi military commander of the Salahuddin region, Abdul-Wahab al-Saadi, told state television that the operation was "going as planned." Latest reports say Iraqi forces have seized at least two districts near Tikrit. The number of casualties is still being verified. Unlike other anti-IS operations in Iraq and Syria, the United States is taking a back seat this time as Iraq did not ask for any support or U.S. involvement. Instead, Iran′s military is playing a significant role in helping Iraq drive the Islamic State militants from Tikrit. Capturing the town is viewed as crucial in any future plans to retake Mosul,... Iraq′s second largest city, also under I-S control. U.S. military officials have said that mission could be launched as early as April. Sohn Jung-in, Arirang News.
This is the reason we were in Kurdistan. Students and teachers from ten districts of greater Iraq and Kurdistan came together for a historic programme of leadership development. Our team - from the first and only school in the UK to take students to this part of the middle east - were outstanding. They demonstrated exemplary leadership throughout. This video shows the project - the sports festival - which demonstrated that young people - irrespective of race and culture - could unite around a common understanding of leadership, sport and teamwork. Thew project was made possible by the British Council, Youth Sport Trust and EU. On this occasion we also had lots of donated kit and equipment from Ipswich Town FC. This was presented to those students who, in our opinion, had shown the most impressive leadership across the four days. You'll see it towards the end of the video. We are very proud as a school to be involved in this ground-breaking project. Our thanks to the British Council, Youth Sport Trust, EU ... and Ipswich Town FC.

Iraq (/ɪˈræk/ or i/ɪˈrɑːk/; Arabic: العراق al-‘Irāq); officially the Republic of Iraq (Arabic:
جمهورية العراق (help·info) Jumhūriyyat al-‘Irāq), is a country in Western Asia spanning most of the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range, the eastern part of the Syrian Desert and the northern part of the Arabian Desert.
Iraq borders Syria to the northwest, Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Jordan to the southwest and Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to the south. Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf. The capital city, Baghdad is in the center-east of the country.
Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run through the center of Iraq, flowing from northwest to southeast. These provide Iraq with agriculturally capable land and contrast with the steppe and desert landscape that covers most of Western Asia.
Historically, Iraq was the center of the Abbasid Arabic Islamic Empire. Iraq has been known to the west by the Greek toponym 'Mesopotamia' (Land between the rivers) and has been home to continuous successive civilizations since the 6th millennium BC. The region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers is often referred to as the cradle of civilization and the birthplace of writing, law and the wheel. At different periods in its history, Iraq was the center of the indigenous Akkadian, Sumerian, Assyrian, Babylonian, and Abbasid empires. It was also part of the Achaemenid, Hellenistic, Parthian, Sassanid, Roman, Rashidun, Umayyad, Mongol, Safavid, Afsharid, and Ottoman empires, and under British control as a League of Nations mandate.
