A mixtape or mixed-tape is the generic name given to any compilation of songs recorded onto a Compact Cassette, CD, music file, or any other audio format.
A mixtape, which usually reflects the musical tastes of its compiler, can range from a casually selected list of favorite songs, to a conceptual mix of songs linked by a theme or mood, to a highly personal statement tailored to the tape's intended recipient. Essayist Geoffrey O'Brien has called the personal mix tape "the most widely practiced American art form", and many[who?] mix tape enthusiasts believe that by carefully selecting and ordering the tracks in a mix, an artistic statement can be created that is greater than the sum of its individual songs.
With the advent of affordable, consumer-level digital audio, creating and distributing mixes in the form of compact disc or MP3 playlists has become the contemporary method of choice, but the term mix tape is still commonly used, even for mixes in different media (for example, CD, MP3, MiniDisc, audio cassette 8 track).[citation needed]Video mixtapes have emerged as well.

You, how did you get so wise?
I take the advice I find in your eyes.
Me, I've been waiting outside
Most of my life,
Oh like a rare b-side.
I'm just making you mixtapes with homemade covers.
Analog to show we're lovers,
And here under the jacket folds inside,
I've taped my heart for you to find.
To find the perfect way,
Which album to say,
I la la love you.
With this plastic cassette,
It's not finished yet,
It's gonna tell you slowly.
I'm just making you mixtapes with homemade covers.
Strings and drawings show we're lovers,
When you're driving around in the summertime,
To hear again, just press rewind.
Rewind, the world comes to an end,
Turns over again,
Another 1000 times.
But me, I'll be the same.
No, I never change,
Oh, like a rare B-side.
I'll be making you mixtapes with homemade covers.
Analog to show we're lovers,
So much rock and roll love in a plastic case,
Play it loudly, see my face.
I'm just making you mixtapes with homemade covers,
Mazzy Star, Donovan's Colors,
Just an audio love letter painted blue,
So I'm making you this tape
Full of songs I thought that maybe you would like
And I know that it's not much
But it's all that I can think to do to make things
right
I know that every word I say
Echos back to yesterday
And all the things that I was dumb enough to say
I know that every glance at me
Reflects what I said you should be
But what you are is more than I could ever see
I can't help but reminisce
As I'm putting in this tape and press record
About the songs I sung to you
And how you made me want to write a hundred more
And that's all forgotten
I think of all the poems you write
Swimming with you late at night
And how we just missed getting it right
There's too much that we've been through
For me to never talk to you
Though I'm unsure of many things, this much is true
I'm not asking for the love that you were smart enough
to give
To someone else
I'm just hoping maybe one day I can make up for the
pain
That you have felt
And maybe it's naive to think that consequense could
ever close its eyes to me
Maybe we could put your tape back on
Rewind until the moment we went wrong
I was always just a little bit lost
Knowing what I do, I should have fought
Simple words connecting thought
Just pieces of the background until they're gone
I was only there to sing your song
What were you protecting yourself from?
You don't get to walk away now
You say hello, inside I'm screaming I love you
You say goodnight, in my mind
I'm sleeping next to you
You drive away from my car crash of a heart
And I don't know
But you gave me the best mixtape I have
And even all the bad songs ain't so bad
I just wish there was so much more than that
About me and you
You talk to him, and it burns me like the sun
You talk to her, and you say that you feel like he's the one
I talk to me, but you can't hear the pain I feel
You don't know
Cause you gave me the best mixtape I have
And even all the sad songs ain't so sad
I only wish that there was more than that
About me and you
Oh, don't turn around and say bye again
Yeah it crushes my head when you call me
Your friend and I'm not the same person
From back in the day in the back of the class
That you thought was gay
No I can't find the words cause I lost them
The minute they fell out of my mouth
And it's love and I'm in it, so give me your lips
And just let me kiss 'em
And let's get messed up and listen to probably...
The best mixtape I have
And even all the bad songs ain't so bad
I just wish there was so much more than that
About me and you
About me and you
About me and you
About me and you
About me and you
Everything I know is you
Let me tell you what we're listening to
I'm a gentle soul I'm sure
But on the stereo I'm a dictator
Do you even haven tape machine?
To facilitate my plastic dreams
All the things that I have seen, from
Morrissey to John Coltrane AHHH!...
Cinematic Orchestra, De La Soul the Shangri-La's
An adolescent love letter, a sparkling jewel of manual labour
I'll make you mixtape that's a blueprint of my soul
It may sound grand but babe it's all you need to know
I'll make you a mixtape that will charm you into bed
It details everything that's runnung round my head
That's runnung round my head
Fondling, record and play
Without you each record's night and day
This ain't no disc of MP3's
This one' handmade, fashioned lovingly
Plant the rythm in your bones
You're the only angel in headphones
My love can paint a million tones
From Nine Inch Nails to Louis Armstrong
So resurrect your stereo
And the swathrs of melodies will flow
Thelonious, Maurizio
I tell you babe it will make my heart glow
I'll make you mixtape that's a blueprint of my soul
It may sound grand but babe it's all you need to know
I'll make you a mixtape that will charm you into bed
