Civil and political rights are a class of rights that protect individuals' freedom from unwarranted infringement by governments and private organizations, and ensure one's ability to participate in the civil and political life of the state without discrimination or repression.

Black Civil Rights Icon: The Problem is Blacks Killing Other Blacks, Not the Confederate Flag
Black civil rights icon and former Mayor of Atlanta Andrew Young says that debate over the Confederate flag is a divisive non-issue which completely distracts from the real problem - the fact that 93% of blacks are killed by other blacks.
Young is widely recognized as a prominent activist for the African-American civil rights movement, having been a personal friend and supporter of Martin Luther King. Young marched with King in Selma, Alabama and was with King when he was assassinated. He was also instrumental in pushing through the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act.

A Look At Bernie Sanders' Civil Rights Activism: 1960s-Present
Details emerged about Bernie Sanders' history as a civil rights activist. It stems all the way back to the 1960s, where he fought to end segregation. He also was a pioneer for LGBT rights back in the '70s and '80s. This demonstrates that Bernie Sanders was ALWAYS fighting for the disadvantaged and will not stop doing so even if he becomes the next president.

Has the black church been castrated on civil rights?
Has the black church been castrated on civil rights?
In a really interesting and compelling debate, Yvette Carnell and Benjamin Dixon give varying perspectives on the role or lack thereof that the black church has taken in the push for equality. While the black church is certainly diverse, there are some who believe that the church has let go of it's role as a champion and leader in the struggle for equality and has instead settled for a relatively passive existence as a docile group that is solely focused on the afterlife or hoping that a higher power will solve their problems for them. Check out the debate, it's interesting.

The African-American Civil Rights Movement (1955--1968) refers to the social movements in the United States aimed at outlawing racial discrimination against black Americans and restoring voting rights to them. This article covers the phase of the movement between 1955 and 1968, particularly in the South. The emergence of the Black Power Movement, which lasted roughly from 1966 to 1975, enlarged the aims of the Civil Rights Movement to include racial dignity, economic and political self-sufficiency, and freedom from oppression by white Americans.
The movement was characterized by major campaigns of civil resistance. Between 1955 and 1968, acts of nonviolent protest and civil disobedience produced crisis situations between activists and government authorities. Federal, state, and local governments, businesses, and communities often had to respond immediately to these situations that highlighted the inequities faced by African Americans. Forms of protest and/or civil disobedience included boycotts such as the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955--1956) in Alabama; "sit-ins" such as the influential Greensboro sit-ins (1960) in North Carolina; marches, such as the Selma to Montgomery marches (1965) in Alabama; and a wide range of other nonviolent activities.
Noted legislative achievements during this phase of the Civil Rights Movement were passage of Civil Rights Act of 1964, that banned discrimination based on "race, color, religion, or national origin" in employment practices and public accommodations; the Voting Rights Act of 1965, that restored and protected voting rights; the Immigration and Nationality Services Act of 1965, that dramatically opened entry to the U.S. to immigrants other than traditional European groups; and the Fair Housing Act of 1968, that banned discrimination in the sale or rental of housing. African Americans re-entered politics in the South, and across the country young people were inspired to action.
Desegregation busing in the United States (also known as forced busing or simply busing) is the practice of assigning and transporting students to schools in such a manner as to redress prior racial segregation of schools, or to overcome the effects of residential segregation on local school demographics.

There is a chronic ongoing struggle to preserve individual liberty against those who claim safety and security as an alibi to erode our civil rights.
On 9/11/2001 a war on terror was declared. Since then Trillions of dollars have been spent. Tens of thousands of our brave men and women have been killed or wounded and thousands more suffer from mental illness like PTSD.
For those of us paying attention, we know another war was also declared on 9/11/2001. The war on individual liberty, and it is being fought right here on the streets of America. While many people disagree on the truthfulness of the official 911 story, most people agree that the fear created by those attacks has been exploited and used as an alibi to erode our constitutionally protected individual rights. We are told ad nauseam that we must sacrifice liberty for security, and that our military personnel are fighting and dying to protect our freedom in countries thousands of miles away. Yet, at home American citizens are being harassed, arrested and treated like terrorist for simply exercising our civil liberties. It is easy to claim your rights when there is no danger in doing so. Our rights only truly count when people are willing to assert those rights under threat and under duress. We must not allow our rights to be eroded by ISIS or by our own government. Will our military personnel and law enforcement officers fight for our freedom and respect our rights here on American soil?

In a really interesting and compelling debate, Yvette Carnell and Benjamin Dixon give varying perspectives on the role or lack thereof that the black church has taken in the push for equality. While the black church is certainly diverse, there are some who believe that the church has let go of it's role as a champion and leader in the struggle for equality and has instead settled for a relatively passive existence as a docile group that is solely focused on the afterlife or hoping that a higher power will solve their problems for them. Check out the debate, it's interesting.

Professor Sheryll Cashin, Professor of Law at Georgetown University, teaches Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, and Race and American Law among other subjects. She writes about race relations, government and inequality in America. Her new book, Place Not Race: A New Vision of Opportunity in America (forthcoming Beacon Press, 2014), argues that affirmative action as currently practiced does little to help disadvantaged people and offers a new framework for true inclusion. Her book, The Failures of Integration(PublicAffairs, 2004) was an Editors' Choice in the New York Times Book Review. Cashin is also a two-time nominee for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for non-fiction (2005 and 2009). She has published widely in academic journals and written commentaries for several periodicals, including the L.A. Times, Washington Post, and Education Week.

He is the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th congressional district, serving since 1987, and is the dean of the Georgia congressional delegation. The district includes the northern three-quarters of Atlanta.
Lewis is the only living "Big Six" leader of the American Civil Rights Movement, having been the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), playing a key role in the struggle to end legalized racial discrimination and segregation. A member of the Democratic Party, Lewis is a member of the Democratic leadership of the House of Representatives and has served in the Whip organization since shortly after his first election to the U.S. Congress.
He is Senior Chief Deputy Whip, leading an organization of chief deputy whips and serves as the primary assistant to the Democratic Whip. He has held this position since 1991.
By 1963, he was recognized as one of the "Big Six" leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, along with Whitney Young, A. Phillip Randolph, James Farmer and Roy Wilkins. In that year, Lewis helped plan the historic March on Washington in August 1963, the occasion of Dr. King's celebrated "I Have a Dream" speech. Currently, he is the last remaining speaker from the march. Lewis represented SNCC, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and at 23 was the youngest speaker that day.[4]
In 1964, Lewis coordinated SNCC's efforts for "Mississippi Freedom Summer," a campaign to register black voters across the South. The Freedom Summer was an attempt to expose college students from around the country to the perils of African-American life in the South. Lewis traveled the country encouraging students to spend their summer break trying to help people in Mississippi, the most recalcitrant state in the union, to register and vote. Lewis became nationally known during his prominent role in the Selma to Montgomery marches. On March 7, 1965 – a day that would become known as "Bloody Sunday" – Lewis and fellow activist Hosea Williams led over 600 marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. At the end of the bridge, they were met by Alabama State Troopers who ordered them to disperse. When the marchers stopped to pray, the police discharged tear gas and mounted troopers charged the demonstrators, beating them with night sticks. Lewis's skull was fractured, but he escaped across the bridge, to a church in Selma. Before he could be taken to the hospital, John Lewis appeared before the television cameras calling on President Johnson to intervene in Alabama. On his head, Lewis bears scars that are still visible today.
Historian Howard Zinn wrote: "At the great Washington March of 1963, the chairman of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), John Lewis, speaking to the same enormous crowd that heard Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream speech, was prepared to ask the right question: 'Which side is the federal government on?' That sentence was eliminated from his speech by organizers of the March to avoid offending the Kennedy Administration. But Lewis and his fellow SNCC workers had experienced, again and again, the strange passivity of the national government in the face of Southern violence."
Lewis opposed the U.S. waging of the 1991 Gulf War, NAFTA, and the 2000 trade agreement with China that passed the House. Lewis opposed the Clinton administration on NAFTA and welfare reform.[24] After welfare reform passed, Lewis was described as outraged; he said, "Where is the sense of decency? What does it profit a great nation to conquer the world, only to lose its soul?"[30] In 1994, when Clinton was considering invading Haiti, Lewis, in contrast to the Congressional Black Caucus as a whole, opposed armed intervention.[31] When Clinton did send troops to Haiti, Lewis called for supporting the troops and called the intervention a "mission of peace".[32] In 1998, when Clinton was considering a military strike against Iraq, Lewis said he would back the president if American forces were ordered into action.[33] In 2001, three days after the September 11 attacks, Lewis voted to give Bush authority to retaliate in a vote that was 420–1; Lewis called it probably one of his toughest votes.[26] In 2002, he sponsored the Peace Tax Fund bill, a conscientious objection to military taxation initiative that had been reintroduced yearly since 1972.[34] Lewis was a "fierce partisan critic of President Bush" and the Iraq war.[11] The Associated Press said he was "the first major House figure to suggest impeaching George W. Bush," arguing that the president "deliberately, systematically violated the law" in authorizing the National Security Agency to conduct wiretaps without a warrant. Lewis said, "He is not King, he is president."

“Marriage and Civil Rights: How to Respond Rightly If the Court Gets It Wrong

Texas Refusing To Issue Citizenship For Children Of Illegal Immigrants
Texas Refusing To Issue Citizenship For Children Of Illegal Immigrants
Texas is refusing to issue birth certificates to children born by undocumented parents. For 150 years, the US has recognized citizenship for individuals born in the US. Since Texas decision, four civil rights lawsuits have been filed against the Texas Department of State Health Services and were later amended to include more plaintiffs when dozens of calls flooded law offices. The rise in birth certificate refusal comes in the wake of the sudden influx of Central American families in Texas. Jose Marcelino Ortiz and Nik Zecevic discuss birthright further on The Lip News.

Civil Rights Activists Say Charleston Shooting is Terrorist Attack
As more information surfaces about Charleston shooting suspect Dylann Roof"s white supremacist ideology, there is debate over whether the killings of nine black church-goers should be called a terrorist attack. VOA"s Victoria Macchi has more from Washington on why civil rights activists want that label to be used.

The one-year anniversary of the shooting of Michael Brown by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, is approaching. The shooting on August 9th of last year sparked widespread protests, some of which turned into violent clashes with the police. It set off a debate over race relations, policing and the criminal justice system.
According to interviews by Reuters with a dozen leading organizers since the shooting, civil rights groups have begun to coordinate in ways they did not before Brown's death, Groups that had acted independently with weekly conference calls, emails and cell phone texts, now work in tandem.
Reuters says the progress of their efforts is hard to quantify. Funding and resources are constraints, as is the slow nature of political change. Rioting in Ferguson and elsewhere has sometimes overshadowed peaceful demonstrations.
But in the past year, the United States has become acutely aware of the deaths of young black men at the hands of police. Protest movements have emerged from Baltimore to Oakland, California, and many say they have seen a turning point.

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/17/15) - An official with the Manassas Muslim Association in Manassas, Va., reported to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, that the mosque’s air conditioning unit was vandalized again tonight - the second such vandalism this week.
On Tuesday, CAIR called on law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for the first act of vandalism.

CAIR is urging mosques and Muslim community leaders nationwide to step up security for Friday’s end-of Ramadan Eid ul-Fitr (EED-al-FITTER) (“feast of fast breaking”) holiday prayers by requesting a local law enforcement presence in the vicinity of any public prayers or holiday gatherings.
Community leaders are also being asked to obtain and implement safety measures outlined in its booklet, "Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety.” The booklet may be requested through CAIR’s website: http://www.cair.com/mosque-safety-guide.html
CAIR asks Muslim community members to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR’s Civil Rights Department at 202-742-6420 or civilrights@cair.com.

Civil Rights & Liberties: Crash Course Government #23
Today, Craig is going to give you an overview of civil rights and civil liberties. Often these terms are used interchangeably, but they are actually very different. Our civil liberties, contained in the Bill of Rights, once only protected us from the federal government, but slowly these liberties have been incorporated to protect us from the states. We’ll take a look at how this has happened and the supreme court cases that got us here.

Racism, School Desegregation Laws and the Civil Rights Movement in the United States

She speaks about journeys that comprises of the Civil Rights Movement in America and the road less traveled her sons have to travel. She imparts lessons of perseverance, family legacy and race that lead people to be successful and contribute to society.

John Lewis: The Civil Rights Movement - From Freedom Rider to Congressman (2013)
John Robert Lewis (born February 21, 1940) is an American politician, and civil rights leader.

The Supreme Court is on the verge of deciding some of the most momentous cases in recent times. One of those cases involves whether the Constitutions require states to recognize as marriage relationships that have never been called such throughout history. This attempted redefinition of society’s foundational institution has been advanced using much of the same language as the Civil Rights movements of the 20th century.

As more information surfaces about Charleston shooting suspect Dylann Roof"s white supremacist ideology, there is debate over whether the killings of nine black church-goers should be called a terrorist attack. A Year After Ferguson, U.S. Civil Rights Groups Gather Pace
A Year After Ferguson, U.S. Civil Rights Groups Gather Pace

Rubble Kings 2015 From 1968 to 1975, gangs ruled New York City. Beyond the idealistic hopes of the civil rights movement lay a unfocused rage. Neither law enforcement nor social agency could end the escalating bloodshed. Peace came only through the most unlikely and courageous of events that would change the world for generations to come by giving birth to hip-hop culture. RUBBLE KINGS chronicles life during this era of gang rule, tells the story of how a few extraordinary, forgotten people did the impossible, … More
