Melvin Van Peebles stunned the world for the first time, with his debut feature, The Story of a Three Day Pass. Filmed in France and selected as the French entry in the San Francisco Film Festival, Melvin's film was awarded the top prize. Saying it was controversial would be an understatement. In 1968 for a black man to walk up to the podium and accept the top festival award for a film he had to go abroad to make--now that's how you make your mark. After his comedy, Watermelon Man, Melvin was determined to push the Hollywood boundaries with the groundbreaking, and even more controversial, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song. Turned down by every major studio including Columbia, where he had a three-picture deal, Melvin was forced to basically self-finance. Risking everything he had Melvin delivered to the world the first Black Ghetto hero on the big screen--whether they were ready or not! More than 30 years later, history is being fashioned again in the telling of this very tale. Mario Van Peebles, Melvin's son, directs an honest and revealing portrait of his pioneering father. Mario now tells the story of the making of Melvin Van Peebles' landmark 1971 film, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, including Melvin's struggles to raise money to fund the film under the guise of creating a black porno film. Melvin had ducked creditors, the unions and had to bail out his camera crew after they were arrested because a white cop decided a bunch of Negroes and hippies couldn't have come by that camera equipment honestly. Despite death threats and temporarily losing sight in one eye, Melvin somehow managed to whip into shape a rag-tag, multi-racial crew and finish the film that would give birth to birth of a new era which was about to explode: Independent Black Cinema.

Adding controversy to controversy. The conversation got heated on The View on Thursday, Nov. 20, when panelists Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O'Donnell, Rosie Perez, and Nicolle Wallace discussed the ongoing Bill Cosby scandal as a part of the Hot Topics segment. Goldberg, 59, introduced the topic, showing new video of Cosby from the Associated Press, which surfaced on Thursday morning. The clip shows the disgraced star, 77, in an interview with an AP reporter, awkwardly asking the journalist that his "no comment" response to a question about the sexual abuse allegations made against him not be aired. With his wife Camille Hanks sitting beside him, the once-beloved Cosby Show alum looks uncomfortable in the clip, repeating that he does not want to talk about the decades of complaints from women who say Cosby drugged and/or raped them. After Goldberg and Wallace questioned the video's inclusion in the story, O'Donnell, 52, brought up the latest women to come forward with their own stories about Cosby, including a woman named Therese Serignese, now 57, who spoke to The Huffington Post this week. "There are lots of allegations starting in 1969," fellow standup O'Donnell said. "There are many, many, many, and it's very hard, I think, for any of us to discuss Bill Cosby in this context. Because he is the beloved father image, the benevolent father that we as a society hold in some way. Even for, you know, anyone who has been the victim of sexual abuse to believe that somebody that you love or know could do that is a very difficult thing. So to even talk about it I think is hard."Perez, 50, took a different view of the situation, commenting on the effect that public opinion can have. It's hard, but not hard for people to talk about it on social media," the newcomer said. "I think that that, to me, is the response of NBC and Netflix and TV Land because they're responding to the mob who are very upset with the allegations, and I think that's a big, big statement. It's a really, really big statement… in this world of the Internet and the information highway and social media, I think that it's pretty fascinating that public opinion can turn the tide." "Well, the only way that this news story became public again was because a male, African-American comedian put it in his act after Googling it and then Howard Stern put him on his show and then all these other women came out as well and said, 'it happened to me,'" O'Donnell shot back, referencing Hannibal Buress' October stand-up set, in which he called Cosby a "rapist" and noted the multiple women who have made allegations against him. As Perez and O'Donnell continued to disagree about whether the public turned the tide and whose business the claims are, Wallace got involved as well, bringing up the recently published Cosby biography, which made no reference of the allegations.

This is the first comedy album I ever owned. I traded a friend of mine a rock album for it when I was 6 years old. I always felt that I got the better deal. I listened to this album until I knew every word and could imitate every voice. It's funny that when they transferred this to CD they overlapped the laughter between the tracks. On the vinyl copy I had there was spaces between the tracks. Those are gone now on the CD and, personally, I miss them being there. If you have this album on vinyl I'd love for you to post it.

What stands out with one of the more recent Bill Cosby allegations is that this accuser claims that the two were in a consensual relationship with each other. If true, it would beg the question why would Cosby feel the need to drug a woman if the sex was consensual? Dr. Drew digs up an old interview clip where Cosby talks about “Spanish fly.” Cosby goes into actual detail, talking about taking a drop equal to the head of a pin and putting it in a girl’s drink. He's detailed enough to correct Larry King that the type of drink wouldn't matter. The girl would drink it and then Cosby describes the rest as “Hello America...” In 2003 Andrew Luster, the great-grandson of cosmetics giant Max Factor & heir to its fortune, was sent to prison for drugging women and then raping them while they were unconscious. He was a good looking guy, had money, and probably had no problem getting sex. So why did he feel he had to drug the women (and in his case, film it)? So far there’s no proof to the allegations involving Bill Cosby other than the words of his accusers but if he did drug the women, why would he have done it? He was a famous celebrity, had money, and likely had no problem getting sex either.

Cosby and his wife Camille appeared on NPR’s Morning Edition Saturday with Scott Simon today to discuss their contributions to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art. But in the last few minutes of the segment, Simon broached the topic that was likely on many listeners’ minds. “This question gives me no pleasure, Mr. Cosby, but there have been serious allegations raised about you in recent days,” Simon said. After a short pause, he said, “You’re shaking your head no.” “I’m in the news business,” Simon went on. “I have to ask the question. Do you have any response to those charges?” He again said Cosby was shaking his head. “There are people who love you who might like to hear from you about this,” Simon tried once more. “I want to give you the chance.” Finally, he said, “Alright,” and ended the interview. Bill Cosby on College, Student Loans, Education, African American Culture, Business, Films (1996) In May 2004, after receiving an award at the celebration of the 50th Anniversary commemoration of the Brown v. Board of Education ruling—a ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court that outlawed school racial segregation in schools—Cosby made public remarks critical of African Americans who put higher priorities on sports, fashion, and acting hard than on education, self-respect, and self-improvement, pleading for African-American families to educate their children on the many different aspects of American culture. In the Pound Cake speech, Cosby, who holds a doctorate in education, asked that African-American parents teach their children better morals at a younger age. Cosby told the Washington Times, Parenting needs to come to the forefront. If you need help and you don't know how to parent, we want to be able to reach out and touch (DeBose, Brian). Richard Leiby of The Washington Post reported, Bill Cosby was anything but politically correct in his remarks Monday night at a Constitution Hall bash commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision. Cosby again came under sharp criticism and was again largely unapologetic for his stance when he made similar remarks during a speech in a July 1 meeting commemorating the anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. During that speech, he admonished apathetic blacks for not assisting or concerning themselves with the individuals who are involved with crime or have counter-productive aspirations. He further described those who needed attention as blacks who had forgotten the sacrifices of those in the Civil Rights Movement. The speech was featured in the documentary 500 Years Later, which set the speech to cartoon visuals. In 2005, Georgetown University sociology professor Michael Eric Dyson wrote a book entitled Is Bill Cosby Right? Or Has the Black Middle Class Lost Its Mind? In the book, Dyson wrote that Cosby was overlooking larger social factors that reinforce poverty and associated crime; factors such as deteriorating schools, stagnating wages, dramatic shifts in the economy, offshoring and downsizing, chronic underemployment, and job and capital flight. Dyson suggested Cosby's comments betray classist, elitist viewpoints rooted in generational warfare. Cornel West defended Cosby and his remarks, saying, he's speaking out of great compassion and trying to get folk to get on the right track, 'cause we've got some brothers and sisters who are not doing the right things, just like in times in our own lives, we don't do the right thing He is trying to speak honestly and freely and lovingly, and I think that's a very positive thing. In a 2008 interview, Cosby mentioned Atlanta, Georgia; Chicago, Illinois; Detroit, Michigan; Oakland, California; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Springfield, Massachusetts, among the cities where crime was high and young African-American men were being murdered and jailed in disproportionate numbers. Cosby stood his ground against criticism and affirmed that African-American parents were continuing to fail to inculcate proper standards of moral behavior. Cosby still lectures to black communities (usually at churches) about his frustrations with certain problems prevalent in underprivileged urban communities, such as in illegal drugs; teenage pregnancy; Black Entertainment Television; high-school dropouts; anti-intellectualism; gangsta rap; vulgarity; thievery; offensive clothing; vanity; parental alienation; single-parenting; and failing to live up to the ideals of Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Jr., and African-Americans who preceded Generation X. In a 2013 CNN interview regarding voting rights, Cosby stated this Republican Party is not the Republican Party of 1863, of Abraham Lincoln, abolitionists and slavery, is not good. I think it's important for us to look at the underlying part of it. What is the value of it? Is it that some people are angry because my people no longer want to work for free?

A very interesting documentary about Black History from the era of the 60's. Did you know that the first open-heart surgery was performed by a black doctor, Daniel Hale Williams? Not many people did in 1968, the year this eye-opening film, narrated by Bill Cosby, was first released. Many still don't today. "Black History: Lost, Stolen or Strayed" reviews the numerous contributions of African-Americans to the development of the United States. From the perspective of the turbulent late 1960s, the fact that their positive roles had not generally been taught as part of American history, coupled with the pervasiveness of derogatory stereotypes, was evidence of how black people had long been victims of negative attitudes and ignorance. Viewing this film today offers students and adults an opportunity to explore their own perspectives - to examine how things have changed in their lives and those of their parents, as well as how troubling stereotypes still persist four decades later.

The camera is almost 10x smaller now, and to avoid saturation it uses electronics rather than a mechanical shutter. Because of their compact size, the new cameras can be readily deployed at a solar power plant, where can measure the height of the clouds using triangulation techniques. This in turn helps to improve the forecasts further.
