The church was built in 1702 - 06 (architect - I.P. Zarudny) on the money of the Duma clerk Gavriil Fedorovich Derevnin and his brother Basil (buried on the both sides of the arch connecting the main church and the refectory) in the place of a wooden church (the 16th century). According to legend, the wooden church was built by the Grand Prince Basil the Third under the promise (vow) by "all world", "obydenkoy", "obyden" i.e. during one day from the prepared frameworks (from that fact there is a common name such as "The Church of Elijah Obydenny").
In 1611 this church was burned up by Polish soldiers. In 1612, before the critical battle with the army of Hetman Khodkevich trying to cut way to the Harrison of the Polish and Lithuanian interventionists besieged in the Kremlin and Kitai-Gorod there was the Headquarters of D.M. Pozharsky. In the second half of the 17th century in the church the ceremonial entries of the Russian tsars took place as well as the religious processions came out of the Kremlin in summer holidays and during draughts with praying for the rain. In that period the nobles parishioner presented the shroud of Christ embroidered with silver and gold (1690).
In 1706 for servicing in winter the warm refectory church was attached to the cold temple. In 1748 it was damaged in great fire, in 1753 it was restored by the Brigadier N.A. Bolkunov.
After many re-buildings the church lost its original appearance.
The church is quadrangular, crowned with the cupola on a wide slim octagonal tholobate, arched with eight-though vault. The altar jogs are on a high basement because of steep slope of the Moskva River. At the entrance to the refectory there is a single-domed bell tower. On the column in the right part of the refectory there are icons of Christ the Saviour and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (with hagiography stamps).
In the first tier of the iconostasis of the central altar there are icons from the wooden church of the 16th century: the Icon of Saviour not made by hands (1675, work of S. Ushakov, located to the right of the Holy Gate) on the margin of which there are 12 appearances of the Resurrected Christ; Kazan icon of the Mother of God (S. Ushakov and his students, to the left of the Holy Gate); St. Elijah's Fiery Ascent into Heaven (the 16th century, with 20 hagiographic stamps on the margin). These and other icons of the 17th century: Beheading John the Baptist, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, John the Warrior the Martyr (it is supposed to be the work of S. Ushakov's pupil, Kazantsev), Vladimir Mother of God (master of the Armory Department, A. Ryazantsev), Dormition of the Theotokos are under protection of the government. In 1944 the particularly valuable miracle-working icon of the Mother of God "Unexpected Joy" was handed over to the Church (from the Moscow Kremlin Church of Annunciation destroyed in the 1930-ies, until 1944 the icon was in the Church of the Resurrection in Sokolniki; was installed on the southern choir of the central side-chapel).
After 1917 it was not closed. In 1922 the authorities withdrew the valuable objects from the church. In the beginning of the 1930-ies the bells were thrown down. To this church many nuns and novices moved from the Convent of the Conception closed in 1924 as well as many church-goers of some closed churches came there and handed over the ancient icons. During the Great Patriotic War it suffered from the explosion of high-explosive bomb fallen near the church.

The Khor Virap is an Armenian Apostolic Church monastery located in the Ararat plain in Armenia, near the border with Turkey, about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) south of Artashat, Ararat Province. The monastery was host to a theological seminary and was the residence of Armenian Catholicos. Khor Virap's notability as a monastery and pilgrimage site is attributed to the fact that Grigor Lusavorich, who later became Saint Gregory the Illuminator, was initially imprisoned here for 13 years by King Tiridates III of Armenia. Saint Gregory subsequently became the king's religious mentor, and they led the proselytizing activity in the country. In the year 301, Armenia was the first country in the world to be declared a Christian nation. A chapel was initially built in 642 AD at the site of Kirat Virap by Nerses III the Builder as a mark of veneration to Saint Gregory. Over the centuries, it was repeatedly rebuilt. In 1662, the larger chapel known as the "St. Astvatsatsin" (Holy Mother of God) was built around the ruins of the old chapel, the monastery, the refectory and the cells of the monks. Now, regular Church services are held in this church. It is probably the most visited pilgrimage site in Armenia. The place of imprisonment "virap nerk'in" came to be known as the Virap or khor (deep), 'virap' meaning the "Bottom most pit". Khor Virap is located on a hillock in Pokr Vedi; the village is 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from the main highway. Yerevan, the capital and largest city of Armenia, is 30 kilometres (19 mi) to the north. The monastery is surrounded by green pasture lands and vineyards within the Ararat plain and is in view of Mount Ararat. The Arax (or Arakas) River flows close-by and the monastery is opposite of Aralykh. King Artashes I, founder of the Artashesid dynasty, established his Armenian capital at Artashat (also known as Artaxtisata) around 180 BC. It is believed that Hannibal, the Carthaginian General who was persecuted by Rome, was also instrumental in establishing Artashat. Artashat remained the capital of the dynasty till the reign of King Khosrov III (330--339) when it was moved to Dvin. Subsequently, Artashat was destroyed by the Persian King Shapur II. Artashat is close to the hillock of Khor Virap. Until its chapel was built, Khor Virap was used as royal prison. The Nerses chapel, built in the 5th century around the famous pit, was of white limestone. Though plain in appearance, a monastery was built around a large enclosure that surrounds the ruins of the old chapel. This church has a twelve sided tholobate and dome and is dedicated to S. Astvatsatsin. The altar pulpit is well decorated. Though most Armenian churches have an east-west orientation, placing the altar at the east end, St. Gevorg Chapel is oriented northwest-southeast. The pit where Gregory was imprisoned is southwest of the main church, underneath St. Gevorg Chapel which is a small basilica replete with a semicircular apse. Of the two pits inside the chapel, Grigor's is the farther one, 6 metres (20 ft) deep and 4.4 metres (14 ft) wide. The pit is approached through two unmarked holes. A small chamber, winding stairway, and a ladder lead to a small enclosure in the pit. To the right of the altar in the dungeon is the main room. A long ladder from here descends to a large cell of fairly good size, which was Grigor Lusavorich's prison cell. The climb down the well is to a depth of 60 metres (200 ft). The pit is well lit but the climb down the metal ladder requires sturdy shoes. It is also extremely humid down the pit in the summer months so be cautious and don't bring candles down as this adds to the heat. The 17th century church built around the pit is a simple structure surrounding a large courtyard which looks like a fort complex. Archaeological sites were excavated starting in 1970 in the thirteen hills (maximum height 70 metres (230 ft)) around Khor Virap and up to the valley of the river. Excavations in the hills 1 and 4, and sections of hills 5, 7 and 8 and of the neck of the land between Hills 1 and 2 are in progress. Some archaeological excavations have also been carried out outside the walls of the church at the site of Artashat, the capital of the Tiridat dynasty. In addition to ancient coins and potsherds, excavations have unearthed well preserved mud-brick fortifications on the north slope of the third hill from the northeast. The anniversary of the deliverance of Gregory is also celebrated in the Illuminator's cathedral built in Erivan.

Kingston City Hall is the seat of local government in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Occupying a full city block facing Lake Ontario in Kingston's downtown, the city hall is a prominent edifice constructed in the Neoclassical style with a landmark tholobate and dome.
The city hall was completed in 1844, with its scale and design reflective of Kingston's status as capital of the Province of Canada at that time. The building was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1961.

Tholobate
A tholobate or drum, in architecture, is the upright part of a building on which a dome is raised. It is generally in the shape of a cylinder or a polygonal prism.
In the earlier Byzantine churches, the dome rested direct on the pendentives and the windows were pierced in the dome itself; in later examples, between the pendentive and the dome an intervening circular wall was built, in which the windows were pierced, and this is the type which was universally employed by the architects of the Renaissance, of whose works the best-known example is St. Peter's Basilica at Rome. Other examples of churches of this type are St Paul's Cathedral in London, and the churches of the Les Invalides, the Val-de-Grâce, and the Sorbonne in Paris.

Pope Gregory I
Pope Gregory I (Latin: Gregorius I; c. 540 – 12 March 604), commonly known as Saint Gregory the Great, was Pope from 3 September 590 to his death in 604. Gregory is well known for his writings, which were more prolific than those of any of his predecessors as pope. He is also known as St. Gregory the Dialogist in Eastern Christianity because of his Dialogues. For this reason, English translations of Eastern texts will sometimes list him as Gregory "Dialogos" or the Latinized equivalent "Dialogus".
A senator's son and himself the Prefect of Rome at 30, Gregory tried the monastery but soon returned to active public life, ending his life and the century as pope. Although he was the first pope from a monastic background, his prior political experiences may have helped him to be a talented administrator, who successfully established papal supremacy. He was stronger than the emperors of declining Rome, and challenged the power of the Patriarch of Constantinople in the battle between East and West. Theotokos (/ˌθiːəˈtoʊkoʊs, ˌθeɪə-, -ˈtɒ-, -kəs/;Greek: Θεοτόκος, transliterated (Greek) Theotókos, translation (Syriac-Aramaic): ܝܳܠܕܰܬ ܐܰܠܳܗܳܐ, transliterated (Syriac): Yoldath Alloho) is the Greek title of Mary, the mother of Jesus used especially in the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic Churches. Its literal English translations include "God-bearer", "Birth-Giver of God" and "the one who gives birth to God." Less accurate translations include the primarily Western title "Mother of God" (Latin: Mater Dei).
The ancient use of this term is emphasised in Churches of the Syriac Tradition, which have been using this title in their ancient liturgies for centuries: the Anaphora of Mari and Addai (3rd Century), and the Liturgy of St James the Just (4th Century). The Council of Ephesus decreed in 431 that Mary is Theotokos because her son Jesus is both God and man: one Divine Person with two natures (Divine and human) intimately, hypostatically united.
Roman Catholics and Anglicans use the title "Mother of God" more often than "Theotokos". Lutherans also venerated and honored Mary as "Mother of God" as expressed by its founder, Martin Luther; the title was officially confessed in their Formula of Concord, accepted by Lutheran World Federation.

The church was built in 1702 - 06 (architect - I.P. Zarudny) on the money of the Duma clerk Gavriil Fedorovich Derevnin and his brother Basil (buried on the both sides of the arch connecting the main church and the refectory) in the place of a wooden church (the 16th century). According to legend, the wooden church was built by the Grand Prince Basil the Third under the promise (vow) by "all world", "obydenkoy", "obyden" i.e. during one day from the prepared frameworks (from that fact there is a common name such as "The Church of Elijah Obydenny"). In 1611 this church was burned up by Polish soldiers. In 1612, before the critical battle with the army of Hetman Khodkevich trying to cut way to the Harrison of the Polish and Lithuanian interventionists besieged in the Kremlin and Kitai-Gorod there was the Headquarters of D.M. Pozharsky. In the second half of the 17th century in the church the ceremonial entries of the Russian tsars took place as well as the religious processions came out of the Kremlin in summer holidays and during draughts with praying for the rain. In that period the nobles parishioner presented the shroud of Christ embroidered with silver and gold (1690). In 1706 for servicing in winter the warm refectory church was attached to the cold temple. In 1748 it was damaged in great fire, in 1753 it was restored by the Brigadier N.A. Bolkunov. After many re-buildings the church lost its original appearance. The church is quadrangular, crowned with the cupola on a wide slim octagonal tholobate, arched with eight-though vault. The altar jogs are on a high basement because of steep slope of the Moskva River. At the entrance to the refectory there is a single-domed bell tower. On the column in the right part of the refectory there are icons of Christ the Saviour and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (with hagiography stamps). In the first tier of the iconostasis of the central altar there are icons from the wooden church of the 16th century: the Icon of Saviour not made by hands (1675, work of S. Ushakov, located to the right of the Holy Gate) on the margin of which there are 12 appearances of the Resurrected Christ; Kazan icon of the Mother of God (S. Ushakov and his students, to the left of the Holy Gate); St. Elijah's Fiery Ascent into Heaven (the 16th century, with 20 hagiographic stamps on the margin). These and other icons of the 17th century: Beheading John the Baptist, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, John the Warrior the Martyr (it is supposed to be the work of S. Ushakov's pupil, Kazantsev), Vladimir Mother of God (master of the Armory Department, A. Ryazantsev), Dormition of the Theotokos are under protection of the government. In 1944 the particularly valuable miracle-working icon of the Mother of God "Unexpected Joy" was handed over to the Church (from the Moscow Kremlin Church of Annunciation destroyed in the 1930-ies, until 1944 the icon was in the Church of the Resurrection in Sokolniki; was installed on the southern choir of the central side-chapel). After 1917 it was not closed. In 1922 the authorities withdrew the valuable objects from the church. In the beginning of the 1930-ies the bells were thrown down. To this church many nuns and novices moved from the Convent of the Conception closed in 1924 as well as many church-goers of some closed churches came there and handed over the ancient icons. The Khor Virap is an Armenian Apostolic Church monastery located in the Ararat plain in Armenia, near the border with Turkey, about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) south of Artashat, Ararat Province. The monastery was host to a theological seminary and was the residence of Armenian Catholicos. Khor Virap's notability as a monastery and pilgrimage site is attributed to the fact that Grigor Lusavorich, who later became Saint Gregory the Illuminator, was initially imprisoned here for 13 years by King Tiridates III of Armenia. Saint Gregory subsequently became the king's religious mentor, and they led the proselytizing activity in the country. In the year 301, Armenia was the first country in the world to be declared a Christian nation. A chapel was initially built in 642 AD at the site of Kirat Virap by Nerses III the Builder as a mark of veneration to Saint Gregory. Over the centuries, it was repeatedly rebuilt. In 1662, the larger chapel known as the "St. Astvatsatsin" (Holy Mother of God) was built around the ruins of the old chapel, the monastery, the refectory and the cells of the monks. Now, regular Church services are held in this church. It is probably the most visited pilgrimage site in Armenia. The place of imprisonment "virap nerk'in" came to be known as the Virap or khor (deep), 'virap' meaning the "Bottom most pit". Khor Virap is located on a hillock in Pokr Vedi; the village is 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from the main highway. Yerevan, the capital and largest city of Armenia, is 30 kilometres (19 mi) to the north. It is situated about 100 metres (330 ft) away from the Turkish-Armenian border (sealed by barbed wire fencing) and defended by military establishments that guard the troubled border zone. The monastery is surrounded by green pasture lands and vineyards within the Ararat plain and is in view of Mount Ararat. The Arax (or Arakas) River flows close-by and the monastery is opposite of Aralykh. King Artashes I, founder of the Artashesid dynasty, established his Armenian capital at Artashat (also known as Artaxtisata) around 180 BC. It is believed that Hannibal, the Carthaginian General who was persecuted by Rome, was also instrumental in establishing Artashat. Artashat remained the capital of the dynasty till the reign of King Khosrov III (330--339) when it was moved to Dvin. Subsequently, Artashat was destroyed by the Persian King Shapur II. Artashat is close to the hillock of Khor Virap. Until its chapel was built, Khor Virap was used as royal prison. The Nerses chapel, built in the 5th century around the famous pit, was of white limestone. Though plain in appearance, a monastery was built around a large enclosure that surrounds the ruins of the old chapel. This church has a twelve sided tholobate and dome and is dedicated to S. Astvatsatsin. The altar pulpit is well decorated. Though most Armenian churches have an east-west orientation, placing the altar at the east end, St. Gevorg Chapel is oriented northwest-southeast. The pit where Gregory was imprisoned is southwest of the main church, underneath St. Gevorg Chapel which is a small basilica replete with a semicircular apse. Of the two pits inside the chapel, Grigor's is the farther one, 6 metres (20 ft) deep and 4.4 metres (14 ft) wide. The pit is approached through two unmarked holes. A small chamber, winding stairway, and a ladder lead to a small enclosure in the pit. To the right of the altar in the dungeon is the main room. A long ladder from here descends to a large cell of fairly good size, which was Grigor Lusavorich's prison cell. The climb down the well is to a depth of 60 metres (200 ft). The pit is well lit but the climb down the metal ladder requires sturdy shoes. It is also extremely humid down the pit in the summer months so be cautious and don't bring candles down as this adds to the heat. The 17th century church built around the pit is a simple structure surrounding a large courtyard which looks like a fort complex. Archaeological sites were excavated starting in 1970 in the thirteen hills (maximum height 70 metres (230 ft)) around Khor Virap and up to the valley of the river. Excavations in the hills 1 and 4, and sections of hills 5, 7 and 8 and of the neck of the land between Hills 1 and 2 are in progress. Some archaeological excavations have also been carried out outside the walls of the church at the site of Artashat, the capital of the Tiridat dynasty. In addition to ancient coins and potsherds, excavations have unearthed well preserved mud-brick fortifications on the north slope of the third hill from the northeast. The anniversary of the deliverance of Gregory is also celebrated in the Illuminator's cathedral built in Erivan. -

Zarudny) on the money of the Duma clerk Gavriil Fedorovich Derevnin and his brother Basil (buried on the both sides of the arch connecting the main church and the refectory) in the place of a wooden church (the 16th century). Zarudny) on the money of the Duma clerk Gavriil Fedorovich Derevnin and his brother Basil (buried on the both sides of the arch connecting the main church and the refectory) in the place of a wooden church (the 16th century). According to legend, the wooden church was built by the Grand Prince Basil the Third under the promise (vow) by "all world", "obydenkoy", "obyden" i.e. during one day from the prepared frameworks (from that fact there is a common name such as "The Church of Elijah Obydenny").
In 1611 this church was burned up by Polish soldiers. In 1612, before the critical battle with the army of Hetman Khodkevich trying to cut way to the Harrison of the Polish and Lithuanian interventionists besieged in the Kremlin and Kitai-Gorod there was the Headquarters of D.M. Pozharsky. In the second half of the 17th century in the church the ceremonial entries of the Russian tsars took place as well as the religious processions came out of the Kremlin in summer holidays and during draughts with praying for the rain. In that period the nobles parishioner presented the shroud of Christ embroidered with silver and gold (1690).
In 1706 for servicing in winter the warm refectory church was attached to the cold temple. In 1748 it was damaged in great fire, in 1753 it was restored by the Brigadier N.A. Bolkunov.
After many re-buildings the church lost its original appearance.
The church is quadrangular, crowned with the cupola on a wide slim octagonal tholobate, arched with eight-though vault. The altar jogs are on a high basement because of steep slope of the Moskva River. At the entrance to the refectory there is a single-domed bell tower. On the column in the right part of the refectory there are icons of Christ the Saviour and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (with hagiography stamps).
In the first tier of the iconostasis of the central altar there are icons from the wooden church of the 16th century: the Icon of Saviour not made by hands (1675, work of S. Ushakov, located to the right of the Holy Gate) on the margin of which there are 12 appearances of the Resurrected Christ; Kazan icon of the Mother of God (S. Ushakov and his students, to the left of the Holy Gate); St. Elijah's Fiery Ascent into Heaven (the 16th century, with 20 hagiographic stamps on the margin). These and other icons of the 17th century: Beheading John the Baptist, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, John the Warrior the Martyr (it is supposed to be the work of S. Ushakov's pupil, Kazantsev), Vladimir Mother of God (master of the Armory Department, A. Ryazantsev), Dormition of the Theotokos are under protection of the government. In 1944 the particularly valuable miracle-working icon of the Mother of God "Unexpected Joy" was handed over to the Church (from the Moscow Kremlin Church of Annunciation destroyed in the 1930-ies, until 1944 the icon was in the Church of the Resurrection in Sokolniki; was installed on the southern choir of the central side-chapel).
After 1917 it was not closed. In 1922 the authorities withdrew the valuable objects from the church. In the beginning of the 1930-ies the bells were thrown down. To this church many nuns and novices moved from the Convent of the Conception closed in 1924 as well as many church-goers of some closed churches came there and handed over the ancient icons. During the Great Patriotic War it suffered from the explosion of high-explosive bomb fallen near the church.

Second monastery that we went to was Noravank. It is way up high in the mountains! Imagine Marcos highway but full of snow. We are just so lucky that we are still experiencing snowfall during our trip here :) Artem, our guide, is with Yura, his 9 year-old son and we are lucky again to be invited in a local's house to celebrate Yura's birthday! According to Artem's friend, Sophie, Armenians are also hospitable like Filipinos and they show appreciation by inviting them to their house. We were blessed to experience this and to meet great people. We were served with local Armenian food and drinks which are: 1. Tolma - cabbage wrapped beef 2. Second monastery that we went to was Noravank. It is way up high in the mountains! Imagine Marcos highway but full of snow. We are just so lucky that we are still experiencing snowfall during our trip here :)
Artem, our guide, is with Yura, his 9 year-old son and we are lucky again to be invited in a local's house to celebrate Yura's birthday! According to Artem's friend, Sophie, Armenians are also hospitable like Filipinos and they show appreciation by inviting them to their house. We were blessed to experience this and to meet great people. We were served with local Armenian food and drinks which are:
1. Tolma - cabbage wrapped beef
2. They love grilled chicken, lamb liver and pork (all grilled and tasty!)
3. Pomegranate chicken salad
4. Pickles and side dishes
5. And of course, Armenians are known for their brandy, wine and vodka! Must-try!
