The Islamic Republic of Iran Navy (IRIN), also known as the Iranian Navy, is the naval warfare service branch of the Islamic Republic of Iran's armed forces. The IRIN has traditionally been the smallest branch of the Iranian military and is tasked mainly with securing Iran's ports and coastline. Over time, the Iranian Navy has lost influence to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, which is now primarily tasked with securing Iran's interests in the Persian Gulf region.
The Iranian navy was rebuilt after being almost completely destroyed during the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran in World War II. Following World War II, the fleet began replacing destroyed warships with destroyers, frigates and many smaller vessels, including powerboats and hovercraft, many of which originated from the U.S. and UK, which had played a part in destroying much of the original equipment in World War II. In the 1970s, Iran planned to extend its naval reach into the Indian Ocean;[citation needed] but this goal was curtailed by the Islamic Revolution (1979), and the ensuing western-backed first Gulf War (Iran–Iraq War) (1980–1988) which left it hampered in the face of the invasion.

Iran’s domestically-made frigate, Damavand دماوند, has officially joined the Navy’s fleet in the Caspian Sea درياي خزر north of the country.
The country’s state-of-the-art training frigate, equipped with modern radar, electronic and reconnaissance systems, was delivered to the Iranian naval forces stationed in the northern port city of Anzali بندر انزلي in a ceremony on Monday.
High-ranking Iranian officials, including Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani علي شمخاني, Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan سرتيپ حسين دهقان and Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari دريابان حبيب الله سياري attended the ceremony.
Speaking at the event, Shamkhani described the Caspian Sea as a sea of peace and friendship, saying the Islamic Republic has played a unique role in providing security, particularly energy security in the sea.
The Caspian Sea is bounded by Kazakhstan, Russia, Azerbaijan Republic, Iran, and Turkmenistan
Also Sayyari said Damavand is a Jamaran-class destroyer which is more sophisticated than Jamaran جماران.
Earlier in May 204, Sayyari said the Damavand frigate is equipped with advanced sea-launched drones as well as cruise missiles.
The Iranian commander said that efforts have been made to employ cutting-edge technology in building the frigate, stressing that Damavand would also be equipped with more advanced cruise missiles than those of domestically designed and built Jamaran frigate.
The Iranian Navy launched its first domestically-built frigate, Jamaran, in the waters of the Persian Gulf خليج فارس in February 2010.
The 1,420-ton frigate is equipped with modern radar systems and other electronic warfare capabilities and has a top speed of up to 30 knots and a helipad.
The vessel, equipped with torpedoes and modern naval cannons, also features highly advanced anti-aircraft, anti-surface and anti-subsurface missile systems.
Damavand, however, is longer but lighter than Jamaran frigate and is capable of tracking and targeting aerial, surface and sub-surface targets simultaneously.
It is equipped with a cruise missile system, torpedo launchers, 40-mm and 76-mm cannons, radar processing systems as well as tactical surface and aerial radars.

Iran, also known as Persia, officially the Islamic Republic of Iran, is a country in Western Asia. It is bordered to the northwest by Armenia, the de facto independent Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, and Azerbaijan; with Kazakhstan and Russia across the Caspian Sea; to the northeast by Turkmenistan; to the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan; to the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman; and to the west by Turkey and Iraq. Comprising a land area of 1,648,195 km2 (636,372 sq mi), it is the second-largest nation in the Middle East and the 18th-largest in the world; with 78.4 million inhabitants, Iran is the world's 17th most populous nation. It is the only country that has both a Caspian Sea and Indian Ocean coastline. Iran has been of geostrategic importance because of its central location in Eurasia and Western Asia and the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran is home to one of the world's oldest civilizations, beginning with the formation of the Proto-Elamite and Elamite kingdom in 3200–2800 BC. The Iranian Medes unified the country into the first of many empires in 625 BC, after which it became the dominant cultural and political power in the region. Iran reached the pinnacle of its power during the Achaemenid Empire (First Persian Empire) founded by Cyrus the Great in 550 BC, which at its greatest extent comprised major portions of the ancient world, stretching from parts of the Balkans (Bulgaria-Pannonia) and Thrace-Macedonia in the west, to the Indus Valley in the east, making it the largest empire the world had yet seen. The empire collapsed in 330 BC following the conquests of Alexander the Great. The area eventually regained influence under the Parthian Empire and rose to prominence once more after the establishment of the Sasanian dynasty (Neo-Persian empire) in 224 AD, under which Iran again became one of the leading powers in the world along with the Byzantine Empire for the next four centuries.
Manichaeism and Zoroastrianism were largely replaced after Rashidun Muslims invaded Persia in 633 AD, and conquered it by 651 AD. Iran thereafter played a vital role in the subsequent Islamic Golden Age, producing numerous influential scientists, scholars, artists, and thinkers. The emergence in 1501 of the Safavid dynasty, which promoted the Twelver school of thought as the official religion, marked one of the most important turning points in Iranian and Muslim history. It also culminated into tensions, which in 1514 led to the Battle of Chaldiran. Starting in 1736 under Nader Shah, Iran would once again reach high prominence, reaching its greatest territorial extent since the Sassanid Empire, and briefly possessing what was arguably the most powerful empire in the world. The Persian Constitutional Revolution of 1906 established the nation's first parliament, which operated within a constitutional monarchy. Following a coup d'état instigated by the UK and the US in 1953, Iran gradually became autocratic. Growing dissent against foreign influence and political repression culminated in the Iranian Revolution, which led to the establishment of an Islamic republic on 1 April 1979.
Tehran is the capital and largest city, serving as the cultural, commercial, and industrial center of the nation. Iran is a major regional and middle power, exerting considerable influence in international energy security and the world economy through its large reserves of fossil fuels, which include the largest natural gas supply in the world and the 4th-largest proven oil reserves. It hosts Asia's 4th-largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Iran is a founding member of the UN, NAM, OIC and OPEC. Its unique political system, based on the 1979 constitution, combines elements of a parliamentary democracy with a religious theocracy run by the country's clergy, wherein the Supreme Leader wields significant influence. A multicultural nation comprising numerous ethnic and linguistic groups, most inhabitants are Shi'ites, the Iranian rial is its currency, and Persian is the official language.

As Iran sees the light at the end of the tunnel of Western sanctions due to a recent deal, the Islamic republic is preparing to cooperate with Turkey in the field of tourism, according to a senior statesman.
“The leaders of both countries have expressed their determination on the issue,” said Masoud Soltanifar, the Iranian vice president and Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization chief, during a press conference in Tehran, the Anadolu Agency reported on April 23.
The two countries are projecting to cooperate in the construction of new hotels, carrying renowned hotel chains to the country and operating tours, Soltanifar said, praising Turkey as an experienced country in the field.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani, on April 7 in a Tehran meeting under the shadow of the differences between the two countries, particularly on the Saudi-led airstrikes against Yemeni rebels and the war in Syria.
Global tourism revenues stood at $1.5 trillion last year, though Iran received just 0.5 percent of it, said the Iranian official.
Iran stood at 46th in terms of attracting foreign tourists and ranked 33rd in terms of revenues from foreign visitors, Soltanifar said.
“We aim at 20 million foreign tourists in 2025, increasing revenues to $30 billion,” he said.
Turkey has been investing in tourism for 25 or 30 years, he said, noting that he also expected more Turkish visitors to the country.
The number of foreign tourists visiting Iran via tour operators jumped 96 percent last year over the previous year, but tourism in the country is still under the negative influence of the U.S and Western sanctions, he said.
Soltanifar also said the sanctions were putting a burden on the Iranian air fleet.
“We cannot buy parts for some of our planes which cannot fly now because of the sanctions. We were prevented from buying new planes, thus there is no direct flight to Tehran to the capital cities of some countries,” he said.
Foreign investors have also been blocked from investing in Iran, he complained, raising hopes that many companies would seek Iranian businesses once the sanctions end.
Iran and major world powers were holding a second day of talks on April 23, seeking to finalize a historic deal that would make any attempt by Tehran to make a nuclear weapon extremely difficult and easily detectable.
Meeting in Vienna, Iran and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany wanted to turn a framework accord reached in Switzerland on April 2 into a full agreement by June 30.
Iran, which has denied wanting the atomic bomb, is set to scale down its nuclear program for 10 to 15 years or more, depending on the area of activity, and allow closer U.N. inspections.
The exact details of how this will work in practice, and in particular the scale and timeframe under which the powers will lift the painful sanctions, still needed to be nailed down and experts have warned it will be a difficult process.

Tehran condemns 1988 shooting down of an Iranian passenger plane by US Navy
On July 3, 1988, U-S warship Vincennes shot down an Iranian airliner over the Persian Gulf, killing all 290 people on board, including 66 children. Iran is marking the 27th anniversary of the tragic incident. Iran’s Foreign Ministry has issued a statement on the occasion. While offering condolences to the families of the victims, the statement condemned the attack on the Iranian airbus as QUOTE a gross violation of the international law by the U-S. The Foreign Ministry also described the incident as an example of state-terrorism supported by the U-S government. The statement noted that the U-S attack on the passenger plane will never be erase

Iranian naval vessels fired what appeared to be warning shots over a Singapore-flagged ship in international waters in the Gulf on Thursday, prompting it to flee to United Arab Emirates waters, U.S. officials said.
The Alpine Eternity, a 29,130 gross tons oil products tanker, has safely reached the UAE port of Jebel Ali after coming under attack in the Gulf, its manager said.
The UAE sent Coast Guard vessels toward the ship once it reached UAE waters and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy ships turned away, one U.S. official told Reuters, adding the account was based on preliminary information.

Iranian Navy Fires Warning Shots at Cargo Ship
U-S officials say Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces fired warning shots at a Singapore-flagged commercial ship in the Gulf on Thursday, before vessels from the United Arab Emirates came to the ship’s aid.
Two defense officials told AFP that the Iranian patrol craft fired across the bow of the Alpine Eternity in international waters and the commercial ship then headed towards the UAE.
The Alpine Eternity issued a radio call for help to the UAE and the Iranian boats fired a second wave of warning shots,
UAE authorities heard the radio call and deployed coast guard boats in response. Officials say the Iranian boats then left the area,

HEADLINE: Happy Homecoming for Captive Britons
---------------------------------------
CAPTION: A British navy crew returned home from Iranian captivity on Thursday, a day after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced their surprise release and ended the two-week crisis. (April 5)
----------------------------------------
[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]
It was a hero's welcome for these 15 British sailors and marine s...who are *finally * back on home soil.
At this base in southwestern England, first things first: medical checks and a full debriefing of their 13 days in Iranian captivity.
Many are for hoping answers...particularly about those alleged confession videos that made their way around the world.
(UK Arrivals 4 -- SOT with Sir Jock Stirrup, Air Chief Marshall)
"You've only gotta look at what they were saying and the way they were saying it. It was quite apparent that it wasn't them speaking."
While British Prime Minister Tony Blair says he's glad the crew is back safe and unharmed ...he notes that it comes on the same day four British soldiers were killed in an Iraqi ambush.
(UK Blair -- SOT with Tony Blair, British Prime Minister)
"Just as we rejoice at the return of our fifteen service personnel, so today we are also grieving and mourning for the loss of our soldiers in Basra, who were killed as a result of a terrorist act."
He makes no link between the latest attack and the Iranian government, but says elements of the regime continue to finance and support terrorism in Iraq.
(standup)
Both Iran and Britain are denying any speculation that the release had anything to do with events in Iraq -- news that an Iranian envoy could visit five Iranians held by U-S forces, and that another Iranian envoy was released by gunmen in Iraq.
(UK Arrivals 3 -- various of plane taxiing in, crew getting off, etc.)
Blair insisted NO deal was made with Tehran for the crew's release.
It didn't take long for the sailors and marines to celebrate... reporters on board say there was lots of champagne and laughter on the flight home.
And they emerged in crisp uniforms, which a military spokesman says were sent to Tehran on a British Airways flight as soon as the government learned of their release.

The ships - a supply vessel and a destroyer - docked in Tartus, a port city north west of Damascus last Friday.
Iran and Syria said the deployment was part of a pre-agreed training mission, which Iran said showed its military 'might'.

Iranian naval vessels enter Suez Canal first time in three decades, reax
Suez Canal

Tel Aviv, Israel
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Meir Javedanfar, Iranian-born independent analyst:
"The crossing of these ships through the Suez canal shows us that we are dealing with a new Middle East. The old political maps of the Middle East should be folded and put away, new ones should be opened. We are looking at new lines in the map because of the political earthquakes that we saw in Tunisia and Egypt, and it's very likely that the government of Iran will want to continue with such acts in order to embolden its position in the Middle east vis-a- vis groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah and also to win much-needed credibility back home on the domestic arena."
3. Medium shot of Javedanfar walking away
STORYLINE:
Two Iranian naval vessels entered the Suez Canal on Tuesday en route to Syria, officials said, the first time in three decades that Tehran has sent military ships through the strategic waterway.
Canal officials said the ships - a frigate and a supply vessel - are expected to reach the Mediterranean later in the day.
Israel has made clear it views the passage as a provocation. Israeli officials refused to comment on Tuesday, though earlier this week Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he viewed the move "with gravity."
The canal linking the Red Sea and the Mediterranean enables ships to avoid a lengthy sail around Africa.
The Iranian ships are headed for a training mission in Syria, a close ally of Iran's hard-line Islamic rulers and an arch foe of Israel. In Syria, officials at the Iranian embassy said it would mark the first time in years that Iranian warships dock in a Syrian port.
The ships paid about 300,000 US Dollars in fees for the passage, according to a Maritime agent. The officials all spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorised to speak publicly about the matter.
Iran's request to send the warships through the Suez Canal came at a particularly difficult time for Egypt as the nation's new military rulers try
to focus on pressing domestic issues, including restoring security after the uprising that ousted longtime leader Hosni Mubarak.
The military rulers apparently had no choice but to grant the ships passage because an international convention regulating shipping says the
canal must be open "to every vessel of commerce or of war." Egypt also cannot search naval ships passing through the waterway.
Iranian warships have not passed through the Suez Canal since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Egyptian-Iranian ties broke down following the Islamic Revolution and the signing of the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty the same year. Later, the
relationship improved slightly, with contacts currently channelled through interest sections in the two capitals.

"What's interesting here is that, as with previous attacks, the Assad regime has blamed just about everybody. They've blamed the opposition. They've blamed Al-Qaida. They've even blamed the United States. Meanwhile, the opposition including the Free Syrian Army has denied carrying out the attacks and has itself accused the regime of staging these things. At the present time, we can't say one way or the other how this happened, but what we can say is that obviously we condemn the attack. We do not think violence of any kind at anybody's hands is the right answer to the problems in Syria."

The US government has condemned the suicide bombing on Friday in Damascus that killed 25 people and wounded dozens more in the second major attack in the Syrian capital in as many weeks.
"We categorically condemn the attack," said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland on Friday during her daily briefing to reporters.
The government blamed "terrorists," saying a suicide bomber had blown himself up in the crowded Midan district.
But the country's opposition demanded an independent investigation, accusing forces loyal to the Syrian regime of being behind the bombing to tarnish a 10-month-old uprising against President Bashar Assad.
"What's interesting here is that, as with previous attacks, the Assad regime has blamed just about everybody," Nuland told reporters. "They've blamed the opposition, they've blamed al-Qaida, they've even blamed the United States.
"Meanwhile, the opposition, including the Free Syrian Army, has denied carrying out the attacks and it has itself accused the regime of staging these things."
Nuland declinded to say who the US believes is responsible.
The blast came exactly two weeks after twin bombings targeting intelligence agencies in Damascus killed 44 people. The regime blamed terrorists for those explosions as well.
Nuland also spoke to reporters about the the rescue of 13 Iranians being held captive by suspected pirates by the US Navy in the Arabian Sea.
The Iranians' fishing vessel, the Al Molai, had been commandeered more than 40 days ago, shortly after Tehran wanred the US to keep its warships out of the Persian Gulf.
American forces flying off the guided-missile destroyer USS Kidd responded to a distress call from the Iranian vessel, the US Navy said Friday.

The statement noted that the U-S attack on the passenger plane will never be erased from the memory of the Iranian nation, and that it further shows the false nature of Washington’s claims about human rights

US Officials: Iranian Ships Fire Warning Shots at Singapore Vessel
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, were unaware of any U.S. Navy involvement.
Unexpected attack
A spokesman for the vessel's Norwegian manager Transpetrol said it was attacked at sea at 0800 GMT on Thursday on its way to the UAE port of Fujairah.
"The nature of the attack is still unclear," the spokesman said. "She reached UAE waters and she is in the port of Jebel Ali now. The vessel is safe and there are no injuries to crew."
The spokesman said the attack had been reported to Singaporean authorities.
A second U.S. official said there were about five Iranian ships and described the shots as "small arms fire."
"Once the ship went into UAE territorial waters, the Iranian ships broke off," the official said, also speaking on condition of anonymity.
U.S. President Barack Obama and leaders from Gulf nations are set to meet Thursday in a rare, high-profile summit on U.S. efforts to broker a nuclear deal with Iran. The United States and five other world powers are in talks with Tehran to curb its nuclear program.
Iran, currently in a standoff with a Saudi-led coalition over security inspections of one of its own cargo ships, last month intercepted a Marshall Islands-flagged vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. It forced that ship into Iranian waters by firing shots across its bow.
Saudi-led forces have imposed inspections on ships entering war-torn Yemen in an attempt to prevent weapons being smuggled to the Iran-allied rebel Houthi group that controls much of the country.
Iran's cargo ship
Iran complained to the U.N. Security Council of the Saudi-led coalition's forces hindering its attempts to send aid to Yemen as a standoff loomed on Wednesday over an Iranian cargo ship bound for the Arabian Peninsula.
Gulf Arab nations in the military coalition have since March 26 been bombing Houthi militia and allied army units that control much of Yemen as well as inspecting ships in a bid to stop weapons smuggling.
Iran said on Wednesday it would not allow coalition forces to inspect the humanitarian shipment. Saudi Arabia has accused Tehran of arming the Houthis, charges the Islamic Republic denies.
Millions of barrels of oil pass through the Bab el-Mandeb and Strait of Hormuz every day to Europe, the United States and Asia, waterways which pass along the coasts of Yemen and Iran respectively.

Iranian Ships Fire Warning Shots at Singapore-Flagged Vessel: U.S. Officials
U.S. officials said that Iranian naval vessels fired what appeared to be warning shots over a Singapore-flagged ship in international waters in the Gulf on Thursday, prompting it to flee to United Arab Emirates waters. The UAE sent Coast Guard vessels toward the ship once it reached UAE waters and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy ships turned away, one U.S. official told Reuters, adding the account was based on preliminary information. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, were unaware of any U.S. Navy involvement.

Iraq launched a full-scale invasion of Iran on 22 September 1980. The Iraqi Air Force launched surprise air strikes on ten Iranian airfields with the objective of destroying the Iranian Air Force. The attack damaged some of Iran's airbase infrastructure, but failed to destroy a significant number of aircraft: the Iraqi Air Force was only able to strike in depth with a few MiG-23BN, Tu-22, and Su-20 aircraft. Three MiG-23s managed to attack Tehran, striking its airport but destroyed only a few aircraft.
The next day, Iraq launched a ground invasion of Iran along a front measuring 644 km (400 mi)

Iran’s First Naval Zone Commander Amir Hossein Azad said, “It is customary for naval forces to be in touch and pay visit to their counterparts in other countries in order to boost bilateral and international relations. In line with the policy to strengthen our political and naval ties with China, two Chinese warships have docked here in Bandar Abbas. Their visit will allow us to share technical knowledge and boost cooperation while it provides a chance for us to hold a joint naval exercise with China.”
Prior to its departure, the Chinese naval troops held joint drills with the Iranian Navy.
Chinese Ambassador to Iran Pang Sen said Iran and China’s relations “started with the famous ancient Silk Road. Now, we are reviving this Silk Road and this visit by the fleet of China is part of our joint efforts to strengthen the good relationship of cooperation between our two countries.”
In September, Iran’s naval forces rescued a Chinese container ship from a pirate attack in the notorious Gulf of Aden. This was also the case for a Chinese cargo vessel back in 2012.

He stated that Iran’s powerful Armed Forces seek to establish peace and security and protect the defenseless people, added that they do not intend to carry out an act of aggression against the oppressed people and children.

US Turns Back Iran in Yemen, Clinton Cash Bribes, Flash Crash Trader
Iran cargo ships, possibly carrying arms and supplies, have turned around and are headed back to Iran. Was it because of the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier group? You can bet on it. I was worried that this could turn into a major international incident. Why Yemen and other hot spots are not part of the Iran nuclear negotiations is beyond me.
There is a new book called “Clinton Cash” that is alleging bribes paid to Hillary Clinton’s so-called charity when she was Secretary of State. In one deal alone, $145 million came into her foundation by foreign donors, and that allegedly paved the way for Russia to buy a large piece of U.S. uranium production. The Clintons say none of the allegations are true, and it is just a partisan attack. That is hard to believe when news organizations, such as the New York Times and the Washington Post, are doing stories.
Remember the “Flash Crash” five years ago when 600 points got erased from the Dow in just a few minutes. At the time, there were stories about how somebody’s “fat finger” caused the crash. Now, we find out that it was a lone guy in London trading stocks in his underwear that caused the carnage. That is simply preposterous. A story in Zero Hedge says the trader that was arrested and charged is nothing more than a patsy.

Iranian military power
ranked #16 In the top militaries in the world
These forces total about 545,000 active personnel (not including the Police Force).[4] All branches of armed forces fall under the command of General Headquarters of Armed Forces (ستاد کل نیروهای مسلح). The Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics is responsible for planning logistics and funding of the armed forces and is not involved with in-the-field military operational command.
Iran's military was called the Middle East's most powerful by General John Abizaid, Commander, United States Central Command (U.S. forces' commander in the region). However General Abizaid said he did not include the Israel Defense Forces as they did not fall into his area of operations.[5]
When the Pahlavi dynasty took power in 1925, following years of war with Russia, the standing Persian army was almost non-existent. The new king Reza Shah Pahlavi, was quick to develop a new military. In part, this involved sending hundreds of officers to European and American military academies. It also involved having foreigners re-train the existing army within Iran. In this gap the Iranian Air Force was established and the foundation for a new Navy was laid.
Britain and the Soviet Union invaded Iran in 1941 in order to secure the area from German interventions. Following World War II, 1500 Iranian troops supported the Sultan of Oman against the Dhofar Rebellion from 1962--1975. In 1971, Iranian forces besieged Abu Musa and the Tunb islands. Before the Islamic revolution of 1979, Iran contributed to United Nations peacekeeping operations. Iran joined ONUC in the Congo in the 1960s, and ten years later, Iranian troops joined UNDOF on the Golan Heights.
With the Iranian revolution in 1979, deteriorating relations with the United States resulted in international sanctions led by the USA, including an arms embargo being imposed on Iran.
Revolutionary Iran was taken by surprise, by the Iraqi invasion that began the Iran--Iraq War of 1980--1988. During this conflict, there were several confrontations with the United States. From 1987, the United States Central Command sought to stop Iranian mine-laying vessels from blocking the international sea lanes through the Persian Gulf in Operation Prime Chance. The operation lasted until 1989. On April 18, 1988, the U.S. retaliated for the Iranian mining of the USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58)in Operation Praying Mantis. Simultaneously, the Iranian armed forces had to learn to maintain and keep operational, their large stocks of U.S.-built equipment and weaponry without outside help, due to American sanctions. Reaching back on equipment purchased from the U.S.A. in the 1970s, the Iranians began establishing their own armaments industry; their efforts in this remained largely unrecognised internationally, until recently. However, Iran was able to obtain limited amounts of American-made armaments, when it was able to buy American spare parts and weaponry for its armed forces, during the Iran-Contra affair. At first, deliveries came via Israel and later, from the USA.
The Iranian government established a five-year rearmament program in 1989 to replace worn-out weaponry from the Iran-Iraq war. Iran spent $10 billion between 1989 and 1992 on arms. Iran ordered weapons designed to prevent other naval vessels from accessing the sea, including submarines and long-range Soviet planes capable of attacking aircraft carriers.[6]
A former military-associated police force, the Iranian Gendarmerie, was disbanded in 1990.
In 1991, the Iranian armed forces received a number of Iraqi aircraft fleeing from the Persian Gulf war of that year; most of which were incorporated into the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force.
From 2003, there have been repeated U.S. and British allegations that Iranian forces have been covertly involved in the Iraq War. In 2007, Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces also took prisoner Royal Navy personnel when a boarding party from HMS Cornwall (F99)was seized in the waters between Iran and Iraq, in the Persian Gulf.
According to Juan Cole, Iran has never launched an "aggressive war" in modern history, and its leadership adheres to a doctrine of "no first strike".[7] The country's military budget is the lowest per capita in the Persian Gulf region besides the UAE.[7]
Since 1979, there are no foreign military bases present in Iran. According to Article 146 of the Iranian Constitution, the establishment of any foreign military base in the country is forbidden, even for peaceful purposes.[8]

The rise of a virulent new form of terrorist threat, embodied in the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (ISIS) has focused attention again on the security of the Persian Gulf Region. The ISIS phenomenon, however, cannot be decoupled from the broader politics of the region. With sectarian tensions high, the Iranian role in Iraq is coming under renewed scrutiny at the same time as Iran and the P5+1 are negotiating over its nuclear program. Energy prices are at multi-year lows, enhancing the leverage generated by robust sanctions, and increasing—if marginally—the chances for a comprehensive agreement. What will the security environment of the Gulf look like over the next year? What role can the US government play in the security architecture of the region, working with its allies to protect against both the terrorism threat and regional adversaries? And, perhaps most important, in a future scenario in which the P5+1 reaches a deal with Iran and sanctions are fully or partially lifted, will Iran be able to integrate itself into the security architecture of the region?

Iran report on IRIN Navy's third naval zone Nabovat Konarak seaport
September 22, 1980 (Persian calendar 1359/6/31)
Iraq launched a full-scale invasion of Iran on 22 September 1980. The Iraqi Air Force launched surprise air strikes on ten Iranian airfields with the objective of destroying the Iranian Air Force. The attack damaged some of Iran's airbase infrastructure, but failed to destroy a significant number of aircraft: the Iraqi Air Force was only able to strike in depth with a few MiG-23BN, Tu-22, and Su-20 aircraft. Three MiG-23s managed to attack Tehran, striking its airport but destroyed only a few aircraft.
The next day, Iraq launched a ground invasion of Iran along a front measuring 644 km (400 mi) in three simultaneous attacks. The invasion's purpose, according to Saddam, was to blunt the edge of Khomeini's movement and to thwart his attempts to export his Islamic revolution to Iraq and the Persian Gulf states. Saddam hoped that by annexing Khuzestan, he would send such a blow to Iran's prestige that it would lead to the new government's downfall, or, at very least, end Iran's calls for his overthrow.
Of Iraq's six divisions that were invading by ground, four were sent to Khuzestan, which was located near the border's southern end, to cut off the Arvand Roud from the rest of Iran and to establish a territorial security zone. The other two divisions invaded across the northern and central part of the border to prevent an Iranian counter-attack. Two of the four Iraqi divisions, one mechanized and one armored, operated near the southern end and began a siege of the strategically important port cities of Abadan and Khorramshahr.
The other two divisions, both armored, secured the territory bounded by the cities of Khorramshahr, Ahvaz, Susangerd, and Musian. On the central front, the Iraqis occupied Mehran, advanced towards the foothills of the Zagros Mountains, and were able to block the traditional Tehran–Baghdad invasion route by securing territory forward of Qasr-e Shirin, Iran. On the northern front, the Iraqis attempted to establish a strong defensive position opposite Suleimaniya to protect the Iraqi Kirkuk oil complex. Iraqi hopes of an uprising by the ethnic Arabs of Khuzestan failed to materialize, as most of the ethnic Arabs remained loyal to Iran. The Iraqi troops advancing into Iran in 1980 were described by Patrick Brogan as "badly led and lacking in offensive spirit". The first known chemical weapons attack by Iraq on Iran probably took place during the fighting around Susangerd.
Though the Iraqi air invasion surprised the Iranians, the Iranian air force retaliated with an attack against Iraqi military bases and infrastructure in Operation Kaman 99 (Bow 99). Groups of F-4 Phantom and F-5 Tiger fighter jets attacked targets throughout Iraq, such as oil facilities, dams, petrochemical plants, and oil refineries, and included Mosul Airbase, Baghdad, and the Kirkuk oil refinery. Iraq was taken by surprise at the strength of the retaliation, as Iran took few losses while the Iraqis took heavy defeats and economic disruptions.
The Iranian force of AH-1 Cobra helicopter gunships began attacks on the advancing Iraqi divisions, along with F-4 Phantoms armed with Maverick missiles; they destroyed numerous armored vehicles and impeded the Iraqi advance, though not completely halting it. Iran had discovered that a group of two or three low-flying F-4 Phantoms could hit targets almost anywhere in Iraq. Meanwhile, Iraqi air attacks on Iran were repulsed by Iran's F-14 Tomcat interceptor fighter jets, using Phoenix missiles, which downed a dozen of Iraq's Soviet-built fighters in the first two days of battle.
The Iranian regular military, police forces, volunteer Basij, and Revolutionary Guards all conducted their operations separately; thus, the Iraqi invading forces did not face coordinated resistance. However, on 24 September, the Iranian Navy attacked Basra, Iraq, destroying two oil terminals near the Iraqi port Faw, which reduced Iraq's ability to export oil. The Iranian ground forces (primarily consisting of the Revolutionary Guard) retreated to the cities, where they set up defenses against the invaders.
On 30 September, Iran's air force launched Operation Scorch Sword, striking and badly damaging the Osirak nuclear reactor near Baghdad.
By 1 October, Baghdad had been subjected to eight air attacks. In response, Iraq launched aerial strikes against Iranian targets.

Seymour Hersh on Investigative Journalism, Iran, Drones & National Security Policy (2013)
Hersh was born in Chicago to Yiddish-speaking Lithuanian Jewish parents who emigrated to the US from Lithuania and Poland and ran a dry-cleaning shop in the far west side neighborhood of Chicago, called Austin. After graduating from the University of Chicago with a history degree, Hersh found himself struggling to find a job. He began working at Walgreens before being accepted into University of Chicago Law School but was soon expelled for poor grades.[10] After returning for a short time to Walgreens, Hersh began his career in journalism as a police reporter for the City News Bureau in 1959. He later became a correspondent for United Press International in South Dakota. In 1963, he went on to become a Chicago and Washington correspondent for the Associated Press. While working in Washington Hersh first met and befriended I. F. Stone, whose I. F. Stone's Weekly would serve as an initial inspiration for Hersh's later work. It was during this time that Hersh began to form his investigative style, often walking out of regimented press briefings at the Pentagon and seeking out one-on-one interviews with high-ranking officers. After a falling out with the editors at the AP when they insisted on watering down a story about the US government's work on biological and chemical weapons, Hersh left the AP and sold his story to The New Republic. During the 1968 presidential election, he served as press secretary for the campaign of Senator Eugene McCarthy After leaving the McCarthy campaign, Hersh returned to journalism as a freelancer covering the Vietnam War. In 1969, Hersh received a tip from Geoffrey Cowan of The Village Voice regarding an Army lieutenant being court-martialled for killing civilians in Vietnam. His subsequent investigation, sold to the Dispatch News Service, was run in thirty-three newspapers and exposed the My Lai massacre, winning him the Pulitzer Prize in 1970.[10][11]
In 1972, Hersh was hired as a reporter for the Washington bureau of The New York Times, where he served from 1972 to 1975 and again in 1979. In 1975, Hersh was active in the investigation and reporting of Project Azorian (which he called Project Jennifer), the Central Intelligence Agency's clandestine effort to raise a Soviet submarine using the Howard Hughes' Glomar Explorer.
In January 2005, Hersh alleged that the US was conducting covert operations in Iran to identify targets for possible strikes. Hersh also claimed that Pakistan and the United States have struck a "Khan–for–Iran" deal in which Washington will look the other way at Pakistan's nuclear transgressions and not demand handing over of its infamous nuclear scientist A. Q. Khan, in return for Islamabad's cooperation in neutralizing Iran's nuclear plans. This was also denied by officials of the governments of the US and Pakistan.
In the April 17, 2006 issue of The New Yorker,[28] Hersh reported on the Bush administration's purported plans for an air strike on Iran. Of particular note in his article is that a US nuclear first strike (possibly using the B61-11 bunker-buster nuclear weapon) is under consideration to eliminate underground Iranian uranium enrichment facilities. In response, President Bush cited Hersh's reportage as "wild speculation." [29]
When, in October 2007, asked on presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's hawkish views on Iran, Hersh claimed that Jewish donations were the main reason for these:
“ Money. A lot of the Jewish money from New York. Come on, let’s not kid about it. A significant percentage of Jewish money, and many leading American Jews support the Israeli position that Iran is an existential threat. And I think it’s as simple as that. When you’re from New York and from New York City, you take the view of – right now, when you’re running a campaign, you follow that line. And there’s no other explanation for it, because she’s smart enough to know the downside.[30] ”
During one journalism conference, Hersh claimed that after the Strait of Hormuz incident, members of the Bush administration met in vice president Dick Cheney's office to consider methods of initiating a war with Iran. One idea considered was staging a false flag operation involving the use of Navy SEALs dressed as Iranian PT boaters who would engage in a firefight with US ships. This idea was shot down. This claim has not been verified.

March 10, 2015 (Persian calendar 1393/12/19)

A senior Iranian commander says the country’s navy will protect the cargo ship that is carrying humanitarian aid to Yemen.
Admiral Hossein Azad said the 34th naval group is present in the Gulf of Aden and Bab al-Mandab strait and has been tasked with protecting the humanitarian aid ship. He said that the 34th naval group has started its mission to show Iran’s might at seas. The naval group includes the Alborz destroyer and the Bushehr logistic ship which are on a 90-day mission. Meanwhile, the Pentagon said the ship should change course and head to Djibouti where the United Nations is overseeing humanitarian deliveries. The Iranian ship which left for Yemen on Monday, is due to arrive in the war-torn country in a matter of ten days. It is carrying medical supplies and food and is now sailing on the sea of Oman.

Iraq and Iran pushed back Monday against U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter's criticisms over the fall of Ramadi to the Islamic State group, An Iranian general went so far as saying America had "no will" to fight the extremists. In Baghdad, a spokesman for Iraq's prime minister suggested Carter had "incorrect information." The war of words over the loss of Ramadi, andother gains by the Islamic State group in recent days, exposed the differences among countries that have become allies of convenience against the militants. The criticism began Sunday, when Carter told CNN's "State of the Union" news show that Iraqi forces "vastly outnumbered" the Islamic State group, but still "showed no will to fight" and fled their advance on Ramadi.

STORYLINE
Two Iranian naval ships sailed back from Syria through the Suez Canal on Tuesday, after entering the strategic waterway from the Mediterranean Sea.
The ships - a supply vessel and a destroyer - docked in Tartus, a port city north west of Damascus last Friday.
Iran and Syria said the deployment was part of a pre-agreed training mission, which Iran said showed its military 'might'.
Iran counts on Syria as its most reliable Arab ally and a pathway for aid to Tehran's patron Hezbollah in Lebanon.

"We categorically condemn the attack that took place near the police station in Damascus neighbourhood of Midan today. It was located about three kilometres away from the US embassy, and apparently about 25 people were killed and at least 46 more were injured. We are unable though to directly verify those casualty numbers."

"The very same ship and set of vessels that the Iranians protested on its last voyage through Hormuz, the John C. Stennis carrier strike group, just rescued this Iranian dhow from pirates. There were actually 13 Iranians on board who claim that they had been held hostage by these pirates for some 40 to 45 days."

STORYLINE
American forces flying off the guided-missile destroyer USS Kidd responded to a distress call from the Iranian vessel, the US Navy said Friday.

he 17th Chinese Naval Escort Fleet, including the missile destroyer Changchun and missile frigate Changzhou, has ended a visit to Iran.
The fleet, which had docked in Iran for a five-day visit, the first such visit made by Chinese naval ships, departed from Bandar Abbas Port in southern Iran on Wednesday.
Chinese naval officials met with their Iranian counterparts as well as local government officials in Hormozgan Province during the visit.

Iran military acting in self-defense
The Iranian president further praised the Armed Forces’ brave moves to defend the country and the Islamic establishment after the victory of Iran's Islamic Revolution in 1979.
Iran’s Army is the symbol of national might, order and civilization, Rouhani said, adding the Armed Forces are presently the “cause of the peace” not only for the Iranian people but for the regional nations.
He emphasized that the presence of Iran’s Navy in the high seas is not a cause for concern to any regional country.
“Our doctrine is not a military and war doctrine but [is] a defense doctrine. Our strategy is always an active deterrent strategy; deterrence to establish peace and security in our country and also in regional states,” Rouhani pointed out.
He stated that Iran’s powerful Armed Forces seek to establish peace and security and protect the defenseless people, added that they do not intend to carry out an act of aggression against the oppressed people and children.
