The following is an incomplete list of countries where Afghan diaspora is found, in alphabetical order.
Jolie made her screen debut as a child alongside her father Jon Voight in Lookin' to Get Out (1982), but her film career began in earnest a decade later with the low-budget production Cyborg 2 (1993). Her first leading role in a major film was in the cyber-thriller Hackers (1995). She starred in the critically acclaimed biographical television films George Wallace (1997) and Gia (1998), and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the drama Girl, Interrupted (1999).

STORYLINE:
Since the Taliban was ousted from power in Afghanistan last year, over 1.3 (m) million refugees that left during 23 years of fighting have returned to their war-torn country, according to the United Nations refugee agency.
While most refugees are returning from neighbouring Pakistan and Iran, several hundred thousands, mostly those educated and with a hope of finding a job, went to Europe.
In Germany alone, there are an estimated 90-thousand Afghans living.
Just two months ago, Ahmad Stanikzai, was one of them. Stanikzai and his family left Kabul 6-years-ago when fighting between various Afghan factions for control of the Afghan capital was at its peak.
Running from daily artillery barrages and struggling to feed his family, Stanikzai, his wife and their 4-year-old daughter Hurian settled in Munich. They were given temporary refugee status and over six years, Stanikzai and his wife had three more children - two sons and another daughter while Hurian, the eldest daughter went to study in the German school. When Ahmad found out last year that the Taliban regime had fallen in Kabul and many Afghan emigrants were returning home, he says he knew it was time for him to pack as well.
Stanikzai says he feels grateful to Germans for sheltering his family in difficult times, but admits that he never truly adjusted to living in Munich. A skilled accountant with a university degree, he worked as a street cleaner and waiter in Munich. Now that he is back in Kabul, Ahmad says he is certain things will be brighter for him and his family.
His story is typical, except that unlike many people in his situation, Ahmad brought his whole family back with him.

More and more Afghans arrive in Athens every day, making them the second largest group seeking asylum across Europe, while most European countries have set up quotas and aid specifically for Syrian refugees.
At the crack of dawn, another ferry loaded with hundreds of migrants and refugees arrives at the port of Piraeus.
Those with enough money will head straight to Greece’s northern borders and continue their journey into Europe. But many others, mostly Afghans, are less fortunate. Without any plan and money, 19 year-old Reza and his friends don’t even have a final destination.
"We will go wherever God wants. Our destination is anywhere. If [God] wants it to be Germany or Sweden, whatever country we reach, that’s where we’ll stay so we can have security and a calm life,” said Reza.
But a calm life appears to be far away for thousands of Afghans arriving from Greek islands in the nation's capital. Many, like Rahila Ghafari and her family, who just arrived from Lesvos, end up in a small park in downtown Athens, sometimes for days.
It took them 11 days to reach Greece from Iran. All they have is their clothes and some plastic floor covering. They would live anywhere they could find a better life, Ghafari said. She feels bitter that the war in her country has been forgotten.
"Why do they give priority to Syrians, and why are Afghans of no worth? Afghans are not Muslims? Afghans are not humans? Why? When my child gets sick, the doctor says leave it. But, when a Syrian child gets a scratch, there are three doctors over its head,” said Ghafari.
New tents are set up every day in the park. Refugees are able to leave only when they receive money from relatives and friends in other countries to enable them to move on to northern Europe.
Safar Mohammad wants to go to Germany. But, he can only do so with the help of the Greek and other European governments, he said. Only they, he said, can take him and his family away from the park that has been their home for over a week.
"Everyone here will die, will disappear, [they] cannot do anything. They have nothing. Look! Locals bring bread here and help us. We don’t have the possibility to do anything. [Governments] must open the roads so people can leave and reach their destinations,” said Mohammad.
In the meantime, Afghanistan’s spiraling violence keeps forcing thousands away from the country. The United Nations refugee agency estimates that about 75,000 Afghans applied for asylum in Europe in the first six months of 2015. That number, over three times more than the same period last year, is expected to grow even more.
European leaders agreed Wednesday on a more comprehensive response to tackle the growing refugee crisis in Europe.
Among the decisions was a plan to relocate across the continent 120,000 refugees from states like Greece that are entry points.

Heartbreaking Photos Show Refugees' Desperate Attempt to Save Drowning Children Off Coast of Greece
The death toll in the refugee crisis in Europe continues to rise as people try to use overcrowded or poorly built boats to bring them to Greek isles from Turkey.
At least 34 people died on Sunday, including 15 children, off the coast of the Greek island of Farmakonissi, according to the Associated Press, who spoke to the Greek coast guard.
That wooden boat sank due to high winds and rough seas, the coast guard said.
Two coast guard vessels and a diving team searched the waters off Farmakonissi looking for survivors or bodies on Monday, the AP reports. So far, 68 people have been rescued from the sea after the incident and 30 others were ab

Most of them arrive in overcrowded rafts on the Greek island of Lesvos, the easiest point of entry to the EU. Crisis-hit Greece has been left alone to deal with an unprecedented humanitarian crisis and as a result these people have to live in subhuman conditions until they find a way out of Lesvos to continue their journey in search of a better and peaceful future.

And then we get a chance to spend some time with them, get talking and realise they actually aren’t so bad. That’s exactly the kind of reaction you’ll have after seeing these lovebirds perched on the Katti Batti tree of pyaar and mohabbat.

Syrians, Afghans clash, hurl stones in migrant refugee border flashpoint
http://GreekReporter.com - The refugees that have flooded the square and its surrounding streets, mainly Afghans, remain stranded in Athens for weeks waiting for authorities to help them get necessary documentation and for relatives to send them money to continue their journey. Poorer than the Syrian refugees, and with their country being less in the news lately, they claim that authorities pay less attention to them. - Full story: http://greece.greekreporter.com/?p=190619

As Al Jazeera's Nicole Johnston reports from Mianwali in Punjab Province, getting the men in the village to support her wasn’t easy.
Aqeela Asifi is an Afghan refugee living in Pakistan whose tireless efforts to help girl refugees access education have made her a true symbol of triumph over adversity. As well as offering displaced girls a pathway out of poverty, the school that Asifi created in Kot Chandana refugee village also gives pupils the opportunity to build a new future when they return to Afghanistan. "When you have educated mothers, you will almost certainly have educated future generations," Asifi says. "So if you educate girls, you educate generations."

So far, 68 people have been rescued from the sea after the incident and 30 others were able to swim on their own to the nearby island.
Those latest figures would account for 132 people who were on board that boat.
That represents just a portion of those who were in need of rescuing this weekend. The coast guard said that it rescued 1,429 people at sea in 58 incidents in the waters off more than a half dozen islands this weekend alone.
Some of the most dramatic photos captured this weekend show a group of Syrian and Afghan refugees and migrants trying to save themselves after a dinghy that they were traveling on deflated around 100 meters off the coast of the Greek island of Lesbos.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

http://GreekReporter.com - War-torn Syrian and Afghan refugees enter Greece by the thousands daily.

Hungarian police block refugees and migrants outside Keleti train station

Most wait to be registered inside a transit area where they're given food, water and medicine by volunteers.

The Battle for Attica Square: Watch as Greece grapples with its refugee crisis
It's the first time that an EU country has seen its treatment of refugees described as a humanitarian crisis by the UNHCR. This report gets to the heart of the escalating tensions in Greece.
"I've seen too many. They cross the river like bees", sighs a local fisherman. With as many as 400 people crossing the Evros river each day, arrests of illegal immigrants in Greece have exploded from 3,500 to 20,000 in a year. Most choose to turn themselves in, but they have no idea what awaits them. Infested with rats,

Angelina Jolie Speech on Refugee and Immigrant Children (2005)
Jolie stated that she first became personally aware of worldwide humanitarian crises while filming Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) in Cambodia. She contacted the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for information on international trouble spots.[66] To learn more about the conditions in these areas, Jolie began visiting refugee camps around the world. In February 2001, she went on her first field visit, an 18-day mission to Sierra Leone and Tanzania; she later expressed her shock at what she had witnessed. In the following months, she returned to Cambodia for two weeks and met with Afghan refugees in Pakistan. She covered all

In the Picture with Zalmaï: Afghanistan – Dread and Dreams
Internationally renowned Afghan-born photographer Zalmaï has spent years capturing the human cost of disintegration and dispossession caused by war around the world. In a new body of work, entitled Dread and Dreams, he turns his lens to his own country to capture life in Afghanistan against the backdrop of the 14-year US-led invasion.
The photographs, taken between 2008 and 2013, paint two portraits of Afghanistan. On one side, the stark reality for the millions of Afghan refugees who have returned to their country since 2002, only to find they cannot go back to their homes. Human Rights Watch (HRW) has released a report last week with harsh criticisms of Iran's policy toward Afghan refugees, indicating Tehran was responsible for a number of human rights violations.
The report, entitled "Unwelcome Guests," details a rise in unprovoked arrests, detentions, beatings and harassment of more than a million Afghans asylum-seekers in Iran as the country faces its own economic problems worsened by international sanctions.
HRW said Iran was deporting "thousands of Afghans to a country where the danger is both real and serious."
Iran, along with Pakistan, has been a major destination for Afghans fleeing violence and persec

Infested with rats, Greece's detention centres are now critically overcrowded. Those who try to avoid this fate end up on the streets, such as in Attica Square, home to hundreds of Afghan refugees. With no government support, crime is rife here, and as frustration builds, racial attacks by local vigilantes are escalating beyond control. Ghulam's family sleep on a bench in the square - his four-year-old son was recently attacked in the middle of the night. "If I'd stayed in Afghanistan I might have been beaten, but they would have at least spared my children. I cannot believe this is Europe."

Since 2000, more than 27,000 migrants and refugees have died attempting the perilous journey to Europe. With an unprecedented number of people breaking through its heavily barricaded borders in 2014, the EU continues to fortify its frontiers.
VICE News presents Europe or Die, a new four-part series that documents the efforts of those risking their lives to reach Europe, and the forces tasked to keep them out.
In episode one of our series, VICE News correspondent Milène Larsson travels to the border between Morocco and Spain, where West Africans in their thousands storm the razor-wire-clad fences. Many are beaten back by border police or illegally returned.

Dawood has performed many concerts in the city of Quetta , where millions of afghan refugees live. These annual concerts have been performed under the specific names "Shab-e-Tarannum 1-4", "Omagh" and "Manji" that were arranged yearly. The concerts in Quetta were those, where Dawood Sarkhosh started to sing and he has facilitated the acceptance and appreciation of music and performance, and their understanding among the Hazara people. All of the concerts were aimed at projecting a clear message. Through his performances, Dawood brought a refreshing political and social ideology to a new generation of Hazara people. Quetta performances are Dawood Sarkhosh' artistic background, who we acknowledge as one of the best performing artist in our country today.

She covered all costs related to her missions and shared the same rudimentary working and living conditions as UNHCR field staff on all of her visits.[66] Jolie was named a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador at UNHCR headquarters in Geneva on August 27, 2001.[70]
Since then, Jolie has been on field missions around the world and met with refugees and internally displaced persons in more than 30 countries.[71] Asked what she hoped to accomplish, she stated, "Awareness of the plight of these people. I think they should be commended for what they have survived, not looked down upon."[68] Jolie aims to visit what she terms "forgotten emergencies," crises that media attention has shifted away from.[72] She is noted for not shying away from traveling to areas that are at war:[73] She visited the Darfur region of Sudan during the Darfur conflict in 2004;[74] Pakistan with Brad Pitt to see the impact of the 2005 Kashmir earthquake in 2005;[75] Chad during its civil war in 2007;[76] Iraq during the Second Gulf War in 2007 and 2009;[77][78] Afghanistan during the ongoing war in 2008 and 2011;[79] and Libya during the Libyan revolution in 2011.[80]
After more than a decade of service as Goodwill Ambassador, Jolie was promoted to the rank of Special Envoy of High Commissioner António Guterres on April 17, 2012. As Special Envoy, she represents the UNHCR and High Commissioner António Guterres at the diplomatic level and works to facilitate long-term solutions for people displaced by large-scale crises, such as Afghanistan and Somalia. "This is an exceptional position reflecting an exceptional role she has played for us," said a UNHCR spokesman.[81]
In addition to her work with the UNHCR, Jolie uses her public profile to promote humanitarian causes through the mass media. Her early field visits were chronicled in her book Notes from My Travels, which was published in conjunction with the release of her film Beyond Borders (2003). She filmed a 2005 MTV special, The Diary of Angelina Jolie & Dr. Jeffrey Sachs in Africa, portraying her and noted economist Dr. Jeffrey Sachs on a trip to a remote group of villages in Western Kenya. Jolie has also regularly released public service announcements promoting World Refugee Day and other causes.
Over time, Jolie became more involved in promoting humanitarian causes on a political level. She has regularly attended World Refugee Day in Washington, D.C., and she was an invited speaker at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2005 and 2006. She also began lobbying humanitarian interests in the U.S. capital, where she met with members of Congress at least 20 times between 2003 and 2006, during which she pushed for several bills to aid refugees and vulnerable children in the Third World and the United States.[70] She explained in 2006, "As much as I would love to never have to visit Washington, that's the way to move the ball."[70] In 2007, she became a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.[82]
Jolie has established several charitable organizations. In 2003, she founded the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation—named the Maddox Jolie Project until 2007—which is dedicated to community development and environmental conservation in Cambodia's northwestern province Battambang.[83] In 2006, she partnered with the Global Health Committee to establish the Maddox Chivan Children's Center, a daycare facility for children afflicted and affected by HIV in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.[84] That same year, she and her partner Brad Pitt founded the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, to aid humanitarian causes worldwide.[85] In 2007, Jolie and noted economist Dr. Gene Sperling founded the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, which funds education programs for children affected by man-made or natural disasters.[86] In 2008, she collaborated with the Microsoft Corporation to establish Kids in Need of Defense, a pro bono movement of law firms, corporate law departments, NGOs and volunteers committed to providing legal counsel to unaccompanied immigrant children in the U.S.[87] In 2010, she established the Jolie Legal Fellows Programme, which recruits lawyers to support governmental child protection efforts in Haiti.

On the other, Zalmaï takes us away from the monumental humanitarian crisis exasperated by war to reveal signs of a new and positive life force permeating the country, and to spotlight the hopes and dreams of the Afghan people.
At a time when the world is turning away from Afghanistan, this work goes beyond the headlines to reveal the ongoing struggle in the country. Zalmaï will be joining us in conversation with editor-in-charge of Reuters Wider Image, Alexia Singh, to present this deeply personal and humanistic body of work of Afghan refugees, by an Afghan refugee.

Iran, along with Pakistan, has been a major destination for Afghans fleeing violence and persecution in their home country over the past few decades.
The HRW report said Iranian officials "have in recent year's limited legal avenues for Afghans to claim refugee or other immigration status in Iran, even as conditions in Afghanistan have deteriorated."
Most poignantly, though, the human rights advocacy group highlighted the adversity faced by Afghan refugees in Iran.

These young Afghan immigrants in Iran are trying to introduce a previously unseen face of their heritage. To do so, they have organized the Roses-Festival; an event that draws hundreds of Afghan refugees from around Iran. Nearly 3 million Afghans are currently living in Iran. Most of them have failed to study in their homeland, and usually resort to construction work in Iran. But the new generation has found it an opportunity to study in a safe atmosphere and to build a bright future for themselves.

The slash in funding has triggered numerous problems for millions of Afghan refugees in Pakistan. Press TV’s Javed Rana reports on unfolding difficulties for Afghan refugees because of the shortage of funding to their welfare projects.

Afghan officials have expressed concern over reports of a crackdown on Afghan refugees in Pakistan following the Peshawar school attack in December. Reports of mass arrests and police harassment coupled with fear of an uncertain future are making life difficult for a population that fled its homeland to escape war. VOA’s Ayesha Tanzeem reports from Islamabad.

As the refugee crisis in Europe is deepening, the world has started seeking solution for refugees' problems.
But in fact, before Europe, many Asian and Middle East countries, especially those neighboring the restive Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, have taken in far more refugees than what Europe received.
India, close to Afghanistan and en route to Europe, has seen the influx of Afghan refugees for years.
Here's an in-depth look into Afghan refugees' life in the South Asian country.

If you've read Khaled Hosseini bestsellers A thousand splendid suns or Kite Runner, than the documentary film The Return by Joost Verhey is a must see. The Return takes you back to the Afghan refugee camps in 1989/1990. At the time, the extend of the refugee problem was simply staggering; yet, hardly noticed by the western world. As a one-off situation director and anthropologist Verhey visited several Afghan refugees camps, including Jalozai, in 1989, sketching the problems of those living in these camps.

http://GreekReporter.com - The refugees that have flooded the square and its surrounding streets, mainly Afghans, remain stranded in Athens for weeks waiting for authorities to help them get necessary documentation and for relatives to send them money to continue their journey. Poorer than the Syrian refugees, and with their country being less in the news lately, they claim that authorities pay less attention to them. - Full story: http://greece.greekreporter.com/?p=190619
