The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), based in Washington, D.C., is an American nonprofit organization founded by journalist Fred Myers and Helen Jones, Larry Andrews, and Marcia Glaser in 1954, to address what they saw as animal-related cruelties of national scope, and to resolve animal welfare problems by applying strategies beyond the resources or abilities of local organizations. In 2013, the Chronicle of Philanthropy identified HSUS as the 136th largest charity in the United States in its Philanthropy 400 listing. The group's current major campaigns target five issues: factory farming, animal fighting, the fur trade, puppy mills, and wildlife abuse. The organization works on a full range of animal issues, including companion animals, wildlife, farm animals, horses and other equines, and animals used in research, testing and education.
HSUS reported its revenue as US$133 million and net assets of US$215 million as of December 31, 2013.
In principle, a sheriff is a legal official with responsibility for a "shire", i.e. county. In practice, the specific combination of legal, political and ceremonial duties of a sheriff varies greatly from country to country.
Gallia County (pronunciation: GAL-yuh) is a county located in the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the 2010 census, the population was 30,934. Its county seat is Gallipolis. Its name is the Latin word for "France." Gallia County is also known by nickname "Little Cardiganshire".
Gallia County is part of the Point Pleasant, WV-OH Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Gallia County was formed on March 25, 1803 from portions of Adams and Washington counties. Gallia County was originally settled by the French who gave the county the Latin name for "France."
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 471 square miles (1,220 km2), of which 467 square miles (1,210 km2) is land and 4.7 square miles (12 km2) (1.0%) is water.
A humane society is a group that aims to stop human or animal suffering due to cruelty or other reasons, although in many countries, it is now used mostly for societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCAs). In the United Kingdom, it may also be a society that provides a waterways rescue, prevention, and recovery service, or that gives awards for the saving of human life (see: Royal Humane Society).
The first Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), based on the British Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), was set up in Victoria in 1871, followed by other SPCAs in Tasmania in 1872, New South Wales in 1873, South Australia in 1875, Queensland in 1883, and Western Australia in 1892, with the other territories following much later.
The SPCAs were given the Royal Warrant in 1923 and became known as the Royal Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, although they have no formal connection with the RSPCA UK. The national organisation, RSPCA Australia, was formed in 1981 to give a national voice on policy matters and advise the federal government on animal welfare issues.
The society or culture of the United States is a Western culture, and has been developing since long before the United States became a country with its own unique social and cultural characteristics such as dialect, music, arts, social habits, cuisine, folklore, etc. Today the United States of America is an ethnically and racially diverse country as result of large-scale immigration from many different countries throughout its history.
Its chief early influences came from English and Irish settlers of colonial America. British culture, due to colonial ties with Britain that spread the English language, legal system and other cultural inheritances, had a formative influence. Other important influences came from other parts of Europe.
The United States has often been thought of as a melting pot, but recent developments tend towards cultural diversity, pluralism and the image of a salad bowl rather than a melting pot. Due to the extent of American culture there are many integrated but unique social subcultures within the United States. The cultural affiliations an individual in the United States may have commonly depend on social class, political orientation and a multitude of demographic characteristics such as religious background, occupation and ethnic group membership. The strongest influences on American culture came from northern European cultures, most prominently from Britain, Ireland, and Germany.

HSUS: Animal Rescue Team
On September 26, 2016, we were called in by the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office to help rescue nearly 130 animals from a North Carolina property. After an anonymous tip to the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office, it was determined that further action was necessary. Once on the property, we discovered the animals living in unsanitary conditions. Many were being kept in rusty cages and had untreated medical issues. The HSUS has safely transported the animals to a temporary emergency shelter, where they will receive medical attention. In an undercover investigation, a practice known as captive hunting is exposed. Exotic animals are held in large pens and shot. Most of the animals are tame, making the kill very easy. New legislation could put a stop to this practice.
www.humanesociety.org/celebrate2015 Together, The Humane Society of the United States and its affiliates made 2015 the highest impact year ever for animals. Working in the halls of Congress, the boardrooms of major food producers, our local communities, and countries around the world — we have improved the lives of millions of animals. In 2016 and the following years, we’ll continue leading the charge for transformational change for animals everywhere. We’ll fight to ban gestation crates and battery cages, end the soring and slaughter of horses, protect America’s imperiled wildlife, put puppy mills out of business, keep more pets in their homes and much, much more. The list is long, but with your help we can win each and every one of these fights. All we need is you.
UPDATE: As of December 2015, Costco announced they are committed to going 100% Cage-Free! TAKE ACTION: humanesociety.org/costco A recent HSUS investigation revealed a Costco egg supplier cramming chickens into tiny cages, forcing birds to live in cages with the decayed, mummified corpses of their dead cage-mates, and engaging in other inhumane practices that are bad for animals and food safety. This is in stark contrast to the happy hens and green fields depicted on egg cartons sold at Costco. It’s been eight years since Costco indicated publicly that it wanted to eliminate cage confinement of chickens from its supply chain. Let the company know that now is the perfect time to go cage-free!
The Humane Society of the United States was called in to assist with the rescue of approximately 70 dogs and three horses from a Gallia County, Ohio, property. The Gallia County Sheriff’s Office served a search and seizure warrant on the property at approximately 8 a.m. on Aug. 11 and found the animals were being housed in unsafe and unsanitary conditions. The owner has surrendered some of the animals to the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office, while the others have been removed from the property by the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office pending the final disposition of this case. “With the summer heat, and given the unsafe and unsanitary conditions, there was an urgent need to help these animals right away,” said Corey Roscoe, Ohio state director for The HSUS. “We’re grateful to the Gallia Co...
