Free trade is a policy by which a government does not discriminate against imports or interfere with exports by applying tariffs (to imports) or subsidies (to exports) or quotas. According to the law of comparative advantage the policy permits trading partners mutual gains from trade of goods and services.[citation needed]
Under a free trade policy, prices emerge from supply and demand, and are the sole determinant of resource allocation. 'Free' trade differs from other forms of trade policy where the allocation of goods and services among trading countries are determined by price strategies that may differ from those that would emerge under deregulation. These governed prices are the result of government intervention in the market through price adjustments or supply restrictions, including protectionist policies. Such government interventions can increase as well as decrease the cost of goods and services to both consumers and producers.[citation needed] Since the mid-20th century, nations have increasingly reduced tariff barriers and currency restrictions on international trade. Other barriers, however, that may be equally effective in hindering trade include import quotas, taxes, and diverse means of subsidizing domestic industries. Interventions include subsidies, taxes and tariffs, non-tariff barriers, such as regulatory legislation and import quotas, and even inter-government managed trade agreements such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) (contrary to their formal titles) and any governmental market intervention resulting in artificial prices.[citation needed]
The strategies used to increase trade among states by reducing or eliminating trade barriers.

The first major protest in Seattle, Washington against the World Trade Organization (WTO) and its role in promoting economic globalization came as a surprise to many, considering the positive impacts globalization was supposed to bring. According to Stiglitz, this was the first step in a widespread recognition that globalization was all "too good to be true." Along with globalization comes a myriad of concerns and problems, says Stiglitz.
The first concern being that the rules governing globalization favors developed countries, while the developing countries sink even lower.
Second, globalization only regards monetary value of items, rather than other factors involved; one being the environment.
The next concern is how developing countries are controlled by globalization and the negative effects it can have on their democracies. Developing countries borrow a large amount of funds from other countries and the World Bank which essentially causes them to give up the benefits of their democracy because of the strings attached to the loan repayment.
The fourth concern regarding globalization is the notion that it does not live up to its original expectations. Globalization was advertised to boost countries economically; however, it has not shown improvement in developed nor developing countries.
Last but not least, the new system of globalization has basically forced a new economic system on developing countries. This new economic system is seen as the "Americanization" (Stiglitz, Page 9) of their policies as well as culture. This has caused quite a bit of resentment and financial damage.
In addition to these concerns, Stiglitz highlights that individual persons and whole countries are being victimized by globalization.
Globalization had succeeded in unifying people from around the world — against globalization. Factory workers in the United States saw their jobs being threatened by competition from China. Farmers in developing countries saw their jobs being threatened by the highly subsidized corn and other crops from the United States. Workers in Europe saw hard-fought-for job protections being assailed in the name of globalization. AIDS activists saw a new trade agreement raising the prices of drugs to levels that were unaffordable in much of the world. Environmentalists felt that globalization undermined their decade long struggle to establish regulations to preserve our natural heritage. Those who wanted to protect and develop their own cultural heritage saw too the intrusions of globalization.
— Stiglitz, 2006, p. 7
Stiglitz then goes on to provide an overview of how we might "reform" globalization, by noting representatives of the world's national governments attended the Millennium Summit and signed the Millennium Development Goals, pledging to cut poverty in half by 2015. Additionally, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had previously been focusing more on inflation, rather than employment and income; however, they have shifted their focus in hopes of reducing poverty. Stiglitz states that countries who seek financial assistance have in the past been asked to meet an outrageous number of conditions, in exchange for the aid. This was one of the most common complaints towards the IMF and the World Bank. They have heard these complaints and have since greatly reduced the conditionality. The G8 group met for their annual meeting in 2005 and had agreed to write off debt owed by the 18 poorest countries in the world as an attempt to help with the global poverty issue. As regards the aspiration to make trade fair,
originally, opening the market was done in hopes of helping the economy; however, the rights between the developing and developed countries have been skewed, and
the last trade agreement actually put the poorest countries in a situation in which they were worse off than to begin with.
Stiglitz focuses on the limitations of liberalization briefly to say the results of liberalization never lived up to the expectations; the developing countries were not able to follow through because their economic and political systems simply could not cope with the pressures.
Finally, Stiglitz also argues that protecting the environment is one of the most important issues and countries must work together to lessen the effects of global warming. Successful development in countries such as India and China has only increased energy usage and also the use of natural resources. People from all over the world must adjust their lifestyle in order to reverse the effects of global warming.

Obama: Pacific Trade Deal Can Be Wrapped Up This Year
President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he was confident Pacific Rim nations could nail down an agreement on a free-trade pact this year, although approval by Congress was not guaranteed.
Speaking to a group of corporate executives, Obama said trade ministers should have an opportunity to close a deal on the Trans-Pacific Partnership in the next several weeks.
"I'm confident that we can get it done, and I believe we can get it done this year," Obama told the Business Roundtable.
He added, however, that U.S. lawmakers might not sign off on the pact, even though they have given him authority to speed trade deals through Congress.

It's one of the most controversial free trade deals in recent history.
Opponents of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment says it puts the interests of big business first.
It was suggested that private companies could be allowed to sue governments before special tribunals.
The European Commission says judges should handle such cases.
It is now proposing to create an international court for the very purpose of settling trade disputes.

Does Trade Help the Environment?
Does Trade Help the Environment?
Does Trade Help the Environment?
Is free trade good for the environment? Many environmental problems become better as a country increases its wealth. More resources are dedicated to taking care of the environment, and citizens of wealthier countries tend to prefer to live in a cleaner environment. There are, however, a small number of environmental problems that become worse as countries produce more, namely an increase in carbon emissions. This video also covers Kuznet's Curve, technique vs. composition effects, scale effects, private vs. social costs of production, and whether companies in wealthier countries ""outsource"" pollution.

This video lays out some of the widely discussed strengths and weaknesses the WTO. For instance, a strength may be that the WTO gives developing nations an incentive to move toward freer trade policies. But, the WTO is often criticized for not doing more to tackle agricultural subsidies and tariffs which serve as major barriers to trade for developing nations. This video also takes a look at whether the WTO actually increases trade, or whether countries are naturally moving toward free trade, as we've seen by the increase in bilateral trade agreements.

"The politics around trade are tough," Obama said.
The TPP, a centerpiece of Obama's push to reassert U.S. economic power in Asia, would link 12 nations stretching from Japan to Chile that account for two-thirds of the world economy and one-third of global trade.
TPP trade ministers failed to clinch a deal at a meeting in late July, but they have said an agreement was within reach, despite remaining thorny issues in some sectors such as autos and dairy.
Obama said the ministers should be meeting again sometime in the next several weeks.
"I'm confident that it will, in fact, accomplish our central goal, which is to make sure that we've got a level playing field for American businesses and American workers in the fastest-growing region of the world," he said.

It's a great pleasure to be here, on my first official visit to Indonesia. I've certainly picked the right reason, the right time, and the right place to be in Indonesia. Over the next three days, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council's ambitious In Style • Hong Kong promotion will showcase the best of Hong Kong in two high-powered, highly appealing, areas: our smartly styled lifestyle products and our internationally in-demand business services.
And what better place to do so than Jakarta, Indonesia's business, cultural, creative and political capital. Indeed, Jakarta is a rising global powerhouse buoyed by a surging economy and an ambitious, increasingly brand-conscious population.
That's why we're here with In Style • Hong Kong, a brand and services promotion counting more than 180 Hong Kong companies. Together, we can help satisfy your consumer and your business services' needs, wants and wishes.
While this year's In Style • Hong Kong may be new, it arrives as a high-profile expansion of the HKTDC's Lifestyle Expo in Jakarta, which took place here over the previous three years.
And when it comes to doing business, Hong Kong and Indonesia have a long and mutually rewarding history. Last year, our total merchandise trade exceeded US$5 billion, up nearly 2% over the previous year. Through the first six months of this year, it's up again - 2.5%, year on year. And our services trade in 2014 was worth some US$1.4 billion, an increase of nearly 7% over 2013 results.
Good numbers, to be sure, and with the promise of much more to come as Indonesia's 250 million people continue to urbanise, to demand the best that the world has to offer.
The strength of Indonesia pushes well past the limits of its vast archipelago. You are a key member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, our important partner in commerce and trade. Indeed, ASEAN is Hong Kong's second-largest trading partner in goods and our fourth largest in services in the world.
Last year, the total value of merchandise trade between Hong Kong and ASEAN exceeded US$106 billion - up 10% over the previous year. I am confident that our mutual trade and investment could only be better, generating new business opportunities while boosting economic growth on both sides.
Pact will boost trade
The ASEAN-Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement will certainly help. The FTA covers trade in goods and related issues, trade in services, investment, economic and technical co-operation, and dispute settlement. The fourth round of negotiations took place in July, in Singapore.
I look forward to the FTA's successful conclusion in the coming year. It will, I know, strengthen economic ties and co-operation between Hong Kong and Indonesia. With our help, it will encourage more Indonesian exports to the Mainland of China. Inevitably, more Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese investment will also find its way into Indonesia.
That connection is among Hong Kong's unique business strengths. I'm talking, of course, about our role - Hong Kong's role - as the super-connector between the Mainland of China and the world. Our free-trade experience and global connectivity have supported - indeed, fast-tracked - the Mainland's opening up to the world for more than three decades now.
More than the Mainland's largest investor, Hong Kong is the launching pad for Chinese companies and brands eager to take their products, services and capital to global markets - that of course includes Indonesia.
Equally important, we are the gateway for global business looking to Mainland markets. For good reason, starting with our tax system, which is low and blessedly uncomplicated. It helps, too, that we maintain a common law system underpinned by an independent judiciary and that intellectual property is rigorously protected.
Indeed, Hong Kong has been named the world's freest economy for each of the past 21 years by the Washington-based Heritage Foundation. Three days ago, the Fraser Institute again ranked Hong Kong number one in the world in terms of economic freedom.
Level playing field
We are a very open and welcoming society. We believe in the free flow of people and information. We subscribe to a level playing field for business, wherever that business comes from. Nearly 7,600 overseas and Mainland Chinese companies are based in Hong Kong. The government does not compete with you. The government does not own businesses in Hong Kong to compete with businesses whether they are local or foreign.

From VOA Learning English, this is the Economics Report. The United States Congress has given President Barack Obama a powerful tool to get trade deals approved. Congress approved what is called “fast track” authority to help Mr. Obama and future presidents negotiate trade agreements. The Senate voted on, and passed, Trade Promotion Authority, or TPA, and the president signed the law soon after. The expanded powers are designed to protect proposed agreements from congressional changes.
The bill’s approval increases chances for two of the biggest trade deals in U.S. history. Under TPA, the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership would be approved with simple-majority votes in Congress. Lawmakers could not amend, or change, the agreements. The sudden increase in support for free trade saddened its opponents, like Independent Senator and Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. He said the law helped wealthy interests and not working families. Environmental groups and labor unions also opposed “fast track” authority. Jim Hoffa heads the Teamsters Union, which represents American truck drivers. He said that “bad trade deals” like the TPP will only send jobs overseas and lower wages in the U.S. The trade battle produced rare, political alliances in Washington. President Obama has had strong support from Republican congressional leaders on this issue. Yet the Republican leaders work against the president’s proposals on almost every other issue. TPA sharply divided Democratic lawmakers.

U.S. President Barack Obama said on Wednesday he was confident Pacific Rim nations could nail down an agreement on a free-trade pact this year although approval by the U.S. Congress was not guaranteed.
Speaking to a group of corporate executives, Obama said trade ministers should have an opportunity to close a deal on the Trans-Pacific Partnership in the next several weeks.
"I'm confident that we can get it done, and I believe we can get it done this year," Obama told the Business Roundtable.
He added, however, that U.S. lawmakers might not sign off on the pact even though they have given him authority to speed trade deals through Congress.
"The politics around trade are tough," Obama said.
The TPP, a centerpiece of Obama's push to reassert U.S. economic power in Asia, would link 12 nations stretching from Japan to Chile that account for two-thirds of the world economy and one-third of global trade.
TPP trade ministers failed to clinch a deal at a meeting in late July, but they have said an agreement was within reach, despite some remaining thorny issues in some sectors such as autos and dairy.
Obama said the ministers should be meeting again sometime in the next several weeks.
"I'm confident that it will, in fact, accomplish our central goal, which is to make sure that we've got a level playing field for American businesses and American workers in the fastest growing region of the world," Obama said.

That’s why Washington has fought for years to cloak the Trans-Pacific Partnership in secrecy. Many Congressmen are still not permitted to view the bill, which is currently being written by more than 600 American and foreign corporate executives.

Ha-Joon Chang - Bad Samaritans: The Myth of Free Trade and the Secret History of Capitalism
According to the conventional wisdom popularized by Thomas Friedman, countries can grow rich only by means of unfettered capitalism and pure free trade. In his controversial book, Bad Samaritans: The Myth of Free Trade and the Secret History of Capitalism, Ha-Joon Chang takes aim at this orthodoxy. Combining irreverent wit with scholarly rigor, Chang shows that nations like the U.S. that achieved their present wealth by means of economic nationalism now preach an entirely different set of policies to the developing world, via the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization. Chang calls on us not only to re-evaluate th

After joining The Nation, he penned vociferous critiques of Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush and American foreign policy in South and Central America. He became a contributing editor of Vanity Fair in 1992, writing ten columns a year. He left The Nation in 2002 after profoundly disagreeing with other contributors over the Iraq War. If Americans knew what was inside the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the Congress would never be able to pass it…
That’s why Washington has fought for years to cloak the Trans-Pacific Partnership in secrecy. Many Congressmen are still not permitted to view the bill, which is currently being written by more than 600 American and foreign corporate executives.
The little that we do know about the TPP has come through Wikileaks, which has published portions of the working text. What those few snippets contain is enough for most liberty-minded Americans to know that the TPP is not only bad for our economy, it’s bad for our liberties.
The TPP is a Trojan Horse filled with a shocking bonanza of special rights and privileges for corporations that leaves America’s middle class and working poor on the hook for the bill.
But because the TPP is being written and debated in private, the American people, and even our own elected officials, have been restricted from seeing the details.
Meanwhile, the corporate-controlled media has played right along with the goals of big business to keep reporting on one of the comprehensive trade agreements in American history to an absolute minimum.
This keeps the average American in the dark, which is exactly where Washington, and its corporate sponsors want them.
But as one U.S. Supreme Court once noted: Sunlight is one the best of disinfectants.

Chang calls on us not only to re-evaluate the policies we promote to countries seeking to grow rich, but also to become reacquainted with our own forgotten economic history.
Ha-Joon Chang has been described by one economist as "the most exciting thinker our profession has turned out in the past fifteen years." He teaches at Cambridge University, where he received his Master's degree and doctorate. A consultant for the Wold Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the UN and other international organizations, he was awarded the Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Thought in 2005. His book Kicking Away the Ladder: Development Strategy in Historical Perspective (2002), which received the Myrdal Prize, was acclaimed by the eminent MIT economist Charles Kindleberger as "a provocative critique of mainstream economists' sermons directed to developing countries."

He became a contributing editor of Vanity Fair in 1992, writing ten columns a year. He left The Nation in 2002 after profoundly disagreeing with other contributors over the Iraq War. There is speculation that Hitchens was the inspiration for Tom Wolfe's character Peter Fallow in the 1987 novel The Bonfire of the Vanities, but others—including Hitchens (or he indicated as such while alive)—believe it to be Spy Magazine's "Ironman Nightlife Decathlete" Anthony Haden-Guest. In 1987, his father died from cancer of the esophagus; the same disease that would later claim his own life. In April 2007, Hitchens became a U.S. citizen. He became a media fellow at the Hoover Institution in September 2008.
Hitchens spent part of his early career in journalism as a foreign correspondent in Cyprus. Through his work there he met his first wife Eleni Meleagrou, a Greek Cypriot, with whom he had two children, Alexander and Sophia. His son, Alexander Meleagrou-Hitchens, born in 1984, has worked as a policy researcher in London. Hitchens continued writing essay-style correspondence pieces from a variety of locales, including Chad, Uganda and the Darfur region of Sudan. His work took him to over 60 countries. In 1991 he received a Lannan Literary Award for Nonfiction.
Hitchens met Carol Blue for the first time at the Los Angeles airport in 1989, and would marry her in 1991. Hitchens called it love at first sight. In 1999, as harsh critics of Clinton, Hitchens and Carol Blue submitted an affidavit to the trial managers of the Republican Party in the impeachment of Bill Clinton. Therein they swore that their then-friend, Sidney Blumenthal, had described Monica Lewinsky as a stalker. This allegation contradicted Blumenthal's own sworn deposition in the trial, and it resulted in a hostile exchange of opinion in the public sphere between Hitchens and Blumenthal. Following the publication of Blumenthal's The Clinton Wars, Hitchens wrote several pieces in which he accused Blumenthal of manipulating the facts. The incident ended their friendship and sparked a "personal crisis" for Hitchens who was stridently criticized by friends for a cynical and ultimately politically futile act.
Before Hitchens's political shift, the American author and polemicist Gore Vidal was apt to speak of Hitchens as his "Dauphin" or "heir." In 2010, Hitchens attacked Vidal in a Vanity Fair piece headlined "Vidal Loco", calling him a "crackpot" for his adoption of 9/11 conspiracy theories. Also, on the back of his book Hitch-22, among the praise from notable figures, Vidal's endorsement of Hitchens as his successor is crossed out in red and an annotated "NO, C.H." His strong advocacy of the war in Iraq had gained Hitchens a wider readership, and in September 2005 he was named one of the "Top 100 Public Intellectuals" by Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines. An online poll ranked the 100 intellectuals, but the magazines noted that the rankings of Hitchens (5), Noam Chomsky (1), and Abdolkarim Soroush (15) were partly due to supporters publicizing the vote.
In 2007 Hitchens's work for Vanity Fair won him the National Magazine Award in the category "Columns and Commentary." He was a finalist once more in the same category in 2008 for some of his columns in Slate but lost out to Matt Taibbi of Rolling Stone. He won the National Magazine Award for Columns about Cancer in 2011. Hitchens also served on the Advisory Board of Secular Coalition for America and offered advice to Coalition on the acceptance and inclusion of nontheism in American life. In December 2011, prior to his death, Asteroid 57901 Hitchens was named after him.

In 1988, Bush ran a successful campaign to succeed Reagan as President, defeating Democratic opponent Michael Dukakis. Foreign policy drove the Bush presidency: military operations were conducted in Panama and the Persian Gulf; the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, and the Soviet Union dissolved two years later. Domestically, Bush reneged on a 1988 campaign promise and after a struggle with Congress, signed an increase in taxes that Congress had passed. In the wake of a weak recovery from an economic recession, along with continuing budget deficits, he lost the 1992 presidential election to Democrat Bill Clinton.

In 1955, free-trade advocate Dr. Lewis E. Lloyd wrote a book on how eight conditions must be met to have free and fair trade. What he discovered changed his view of free trade, especially in regard to free trade agreements and the welfare of America. Are you in favor of merging America with other countries?

Greens Senator Whish-Wilson and Greens Leader Senator Di Natale take the Government to task over their free trade jobs stuff up. While touting how *amazing* their China, Korean and Japanese Free Trade Agreements are, the government has made a humiliating error in repeatedly promoting the creation of 178,000 jobs. In reality their own modeling shows that there will be just 5,434 jobs created from these three FTAs in 20 years time. #MATHSFAIL
The government has added the yearly total of jobs that will exist under the free trade agreements – a number that changes each year, like a bank balance.
If you take your last twenty years of bank statements and add up the balances, that WILL NOT equal how much money you’ve got – but that’s what the government did when calculating the job figures.
The government has misled the public and misled the Australian people. Greens Senator Whish-Wilson and Greens Leader Senator Di Natale take the Government to task.

Chief Executive CY Leung

This is an excerpt from the Follow the Money Weekly podcast hosted each week by economist and author, Jerry Robinson.
++++++++++++

Hitchens went to the United States in 1981, as part of an editor exchange program between The New Statesman and The Nation.
