The residents of Muzaffarabad are a highly literate and business orientated class maintaining close ties with the financial capitals of Northern Pakistan, primarily Rawalpindi and the KPK. Muzaffarabad is a prime destination for further and higher education for the youth of Azad Kashmir and also produces the elite class of Azad Kashmir such as doctors, lawyers and businessmen. Rawalpindi is also a prime destination for further education and training.
An interesting point to note is that the entrance to the Kashmir valley faces northwards and passes westwardly through Neelum and down towards Muzaffarabad, where trade had flourished prior to the Kashmir dispute between the valley and Azad Kashmir.
Muzaffarabad is situated at the confluence of the Jhelum and Neelum rivers. The city is 138 kilometres from Rawalpindi and Islamabad and about 76 kilometres from Abbottabad. Muzaffarabad city is connected to Islamabad by a motorway, increasing trade between the mainland and the autonomous region. Cradled by lofty mountains, Muzaffarabad reflects a blend of various cultures and languages. The main language is a form of potohari and Pahari. The Neelum river plays a dominant role in the microclimate of Muzaffarabad which joins Jehlum River near Domail.

Two further tributaries join the river before it flows into a 97.7 sq. miles reservoir for the Mangla Dam in Mirpur district.
Although its majestic mountainous scenery leaves you breathless, Muzaffarabad's mountains are dwarfed by Karakorum's famous giants like the K(Karakorum)2 (8611m), Broad Peak (8,047 m) and Rakaposhi (7,788 m). These are found in northern fringes of the region making up the greatest concentration of high mountains in the world with longest and the largest glaciers outside the polar regions.
The town is located at an altitude of approximately 700m and most of its surrounding hills and mountains range in height from 1000 to 1600 m. However, Pir Chinasi (3110 m) reaches height that lies well above this range. Other notable mountains and peaks in its vicinity include Pir Hasimar (2632 m approx.), Pir Chela (2860 m approx.) and Makra peak (3,586 m).
In 2005 the city was struck by a catastrophic earthquake with widespread destruction and enormous loss of life. The epicentre was just 19km to the northeast. Muzaffarabad lies on a geologically active fault line associated with slow-motion collision between Indian and the Eurasian tectonic plates, going back to 40 million years.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

STORYLINE
Electricity was restored to parts of Muzaffarabad, the Pakistan-controlled Kashmiri city of 600,000 in the heart of the quake zone, but many of its shell-shocked inhabitants remained homeless on Saturday.
Several power plants were producing electricity and efforts were underway to restore the water supply to part of the city.
Brigadier Shaman Jan, CEO of Peshawar Electricity Supply Corporation, said there would soon be enough electricity for those buildings that still remained standing in the devastated city.
But for most people, reconstruction means scavenging for scrap with which to build makeshift shelters, a pressing concern as rain, snow and frigid weather compounded the misery of the homeless victims.
The Prime Minister of the region, Sikander Hayat Khan, has spoken of a master plan to rebuild as quickly as possible without, however, giving a target date.
The death toll in Pakistan's devastating earthquake rose to nearly 40,000 on Saturday.

STORYLINE
Rescuers continued on Monday to search for students trapped inside a collapsed school in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, three days after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the region killing at least 20-30-thousand.
Meanwhile, many who have survived are left homeless and hungry, desperate for aid to arrive.
In Garhi Habibullah, around 200 kilometres (124 miles) north east Islamabad, workers searched with their bare hands removing rubble piece by piece from the school, hoping to find some of the children trapped inside alive.
The school's caretaker, Shafiq, said that although they were expecting assistance from the army, no one had yet come. After three days they still wait for any kind of help, he said.
And in Muzaffarabad, where at least 11-thousand people have been killed, complaints were similar.
One resident, Khurashid Kiany, said that there was no food or water and that although they have heard crews were on there way, they had seen nothing yet.
And small children held up signs in English asking for help.
Displaced, homeless and hungry, families huddled under makeshift tents waiting for relief supplies.
The United Nations warned that over 2.5 (m) million people are in need of shelter after Saturday's quake.
There appeared to be little if any official coordination of relief in Muzaffarabad, a city of 600-thousand, and doctors warned of an outbreak of disease unless more relief arrives soon.
With landslides still blocking roads to many the worst-hit areas, Pakistan's army was flying in food, water and medicines into the disaster zone.
On Monday, some Russian aid workers arrived with sniffer dogs to help the search for any that may still be alive and offer support in any way possible.
Speaking in Muzaffarabad, Brigadier Ashraf Tabassam of the Pakistan Army said that after a disaster of such scale, reaching people takes time due to logistical problems with road closures and landslides.
The country is calling the quake its worst-ever disaster.

STORYLINE:
A strong aftershock from the earthquake in the Pakistani Kashmir region shook the area again on Wednesday, unleashing landslides and alarming survivors along with workers trying to provide supplies and medical help.
On the same day, new casualty figures pushed the overall death toll to more than 79-thousand, regional officials.
Despite brisk sorties of helicopters delivering aid to earthquake victims in recent days, an estimated half a million survivors in Pakistan's portion of Kashmir have yet to receive any help since the 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck on October 8, levelling entire villages.
Thousands desperately need medical care.
Pakistan's president, General Pervez Musharraf visited Balakot on Wednesday, to see the relief efforts in one of the areas hardest hit.
Musharraf toured a field hospital meeting children and seeing doctors at work.
He later spoke with earthquake survivors, telling them "we are with you in your grief and will help you recover".
Wednesday morning's 5.8-magnitude aftershock struck 129 kilometres (80 miles) north of Islamabad, near the epicentre of the first earthquake, according to the US National Earthquake Centre in Colorado.
It was followed by another in the same area about 45 minutes later that registered 5.6 on the Richter scale.
The first aftershock caused a landslide in Balakot.
Debris covered the road to nearby Mansehra, but it was quickly cleared, said Pakistani Army Lieutenant Colonel Saeed Iqbal, who is in charge of the relief efforts in the area.
Asif Iqbal Daudzai, information minister for Pakistan's North West Frontier Province, said Wednesday that 37,958 people died in the province and at least 23,172 were injured, the vast majority of them in Mansehra district.
He said the figures were based on reports from local government and hospital officials, and that the toll was likely to rise.
The prime minister of neighbouring Pakistani-held Kashmir, Sikander Hayat Khan, said at least 40-thousand people died in that region.
India has reported 1,360 deaths in the part of Kashmir that it controls.

Brigadier Shaman Jan, CEO of Peshawar Electricity Supply Corporation, said there would soon be enough electricity for those buildings that remained standing in the devastated city.
But for most people, reconstruction means scavenging for scrap with which to build makeshift shelters, a pressing concern as rain, snow and frigid weather compounded the misery of the homeless victims.

STORYLINE:
Survivors of Pakistan's huge earthquake gathered around the country on Friday for the start of the Eid al-Fitr celebration marking the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.
Eid is usually a time of feasting and prayer but the holiday is being marked slightly differently this year, in the wake of the October 8 earthquake.
The magnitude-7.6 earthquake that killed about 80-thousand people and shattered cities has left few in the mood for celebrating.
In Islamabad, store keepers said markets that are normally filled with shoppers had fewer customers who bought items to celebrate Eid.
Local officials in parts of the quake zone have tried to encourage merchants to reopen for Eid business, prompting a small revival of commerce in badly hit areas.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz met with families celebrating Eid at a tent camp on the outskirts of Islamabad on Friday.
Aziz said: "If you go around this country, there is an atmosphere of caring and sharing rather than celebrating, and that's what makes a great nation."
In the badly hit town of Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, students gathered at Muzaffarabad University for prayers.
A local resident who attended the prayers there said this year said Eid celebrations were "different" because many of his friends and family had died in the quake.
Pakistan's president General Pervez Musharraf asked citizens throughout the country to tone down festivities out of respect for quake victims.

STORYLINE:
Local medical resources have been stretched to the limit by the massive earthquake in south Asia.
Muzaffarabad in Pakistani Kashmir was near the epicentre of October the 8th's quake that measured 7.6 on the Richter scale.
Up until Tuesday, many patients were flown in to Muzaffarabad from remote mountain villages - but then had to be flown to the capital, Islamabad.
Now, however, the local infrastructure has improved to a degree that has allowed the local hospital in Muzaffarabad to at least take care of some of the emergency cases.
"There's no need now to refer any patient to Islamabad because the hospitals over there are flooded," claimed Dr Jehan Zaib Orakzai, one of the surgeons at the Abbas Institute of Medical Science in Muzaffarabad.
At least 54-thousand people died in the October 8 disaster, most of them in the Pakistani-held part of divided Kashmir.
The toll includes 1,361 death reported by India on its side of the boundary splitting the Himalayan region.

BANDI CHAMIALI is a mountainous rural area located in Abbottabad District. Dhand Kheter (Bandi Chamiali)
is the biggest village of Galiyat/Circle Bakot located approximately 40 km from Abbottabad on the Abbottabad-Muzaffarabad Road. A lush green valley full of pines.it can be termed as the most peaceful place in Pakistan as it's free from the hustle & bustle of cities life" it is 8,500 feet above the sea level. Dhand Kheter (Pattan Kalan) is located in the eastern edge of Abbottabad district where it forms part of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's border with Muzaffarabad District, Kashmir. It also borders the following Union Councils within Abbottabad district, Kukmang and Boi to the north, Kuthwal to the west, Beerangali and Nambal to the south.
The people of Dhand Kheter are all Muslims. Most of the people of residing here belong to the Qureshi, Gujjar, and Abbasi tribes. The mother language of the people of Dhand Kheter is Hindko. The highest peak in Abbottabad District, Thandiani, is located in Dhand Kheter (Bandi Chamiali) and is located in the south of Abbottabad District at 34°13'60N 73°22'0E[ and is about 31 kilometres from Abbottabad city in the foothills of the Himalayas. To the east beyond the Kunhar River lies the fabulous snow covered Pir Panjal mountain range of Kashmir. Visible to the north and northeast are the mountains of Kohistan and Kaghan. To the northwest are the snowy ranges of Swat and Chitral. The hills of Thandiani are about 9,000 feet (2,750 m) above sea level. The nearest villages are Inderseri, Chattri, Okhrila, , Khokhriala, Lari, Banota, Sialkot and Bandi Chamiali (Dhand Kheter).
Thandiani was originally granted as a lease to some members of the famous Battye family , in British India, who were dynamic Christian missionaries and also found in civil and military service, and who produced such famous scions as Wigram Battye and Quintin Battye; and the Battyes subsequently gifted the location to the church authorities, where a Sanatorium and various other facilities were set up during the British rule, mostly for the convenience of missionaries, Anglican church personnel and officers stationed at the neighbouring cantonment of Abbottabad. It contained some private European houses, a camping ground, a small bazaar, and the small seasonal church of St Xavier in the Wilderness which were occupied only during the summer months. Thandiani is characterized by excellent weather and lush greenery in the summer months, and snow-covered vistas and hills in the winter. Many tourists from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and all over Pakistan visit here, especially in the summer season. Being at a high altitude, with attractive scenery and several fine hiking trails into the forests and other nearby locations, it is a very attractive prospect.
The mountains around Thandiani are still quite thickly forested, compared to most other hill stations in the locality, which have suffered some degree of deforestation over time. The local wildlife includes leopards, monkeys, several kinds of pheasants and the increasingly rare Flying squirrel and Pine Marten, to name only a few.
As this area is away from sea and is above the sea level its winters are extreme. Winter lasts from October to April. April tends to be quite pleasant as the climate is temperate. The summer season is very pleasant and humid the temperature rises maximum to 25-30 degree, due to which it is good picnic spot.
From mid July to mid August people enjoy the fifth season, monsoon, which provides relief after the hot months (i.e.May and June). Farming is the main occupation of the people. The farming is done by oxen in the remote area of village but in proper village i.e. Chamiali, Pattan is ploughed by machinery because of accessibility the two crops are grown there i.e. rabi and kharaif. The Neelam river, a tributary of the Kashmir valley's Jhelum river, meanders through Muzaffarabad until it reaches its confluence in the city's heartland at Domel. Before heading out of the town, the merged river forms a spectacular U-bend around Chattar area.

So the only patients we are referring now are the neurosurgical patients. And the federal ministry now has taken care of everything that is required here so whatever material or manpower or whatever equipment is required it has been provided to us and that is why this hospital is now up and running."
