THE KARAKORAM ANOMALY
THE KARAKORAM ANOMALY
Showreel of upcoming documentary about climate change on the Karakoram and Himalayan ranges. An Italian-born filmmaker, Niccolo Piazza, is preparing to release The Karakoram Anomaly, a documentary examining life, culture and heritage in Baltistan and the Hunza Valley, locations in Pakistan's mountainous northern regions, against a broader backdrop of climate change. The Karakoram and Western Himalaya mountain ranges are part of this area, and it holds one of the largest stores of glacier water outside of the Poles; hence, the local community's livelihoods may be directly affected by man-made changes to the environment. Hidden among some of the tallest peaks in the world, Baltistan and the Hunza valley are historically, culturally and environmentally unique: the mountains here hold the largest amount of glacier water outside the Poles, and the locals' livelihoods have been depending on it for centuries. Showing the culture and lifestyle of the people living in the Pakistan northern areas. This region, on the border between Pakistan, China and India, is a prime example of the kind of irreplaceable human heritage that is at risk of being lost because of climate change. The film explores the local culture, its rich history, and its miraculously-successful symbiotic relationship with the mountains and the glaciers. Filmed by Niccolo Piazza on RED Scarlet-X at 4K. Screening on September 9- published: 29 Aug 2013

Karakoram HeliSki - World Best Kept Secret Part 1
Skiing Down the Peaks of the Himalayas Full Story: An 11-member team of some of the world's top skiers flew into Pakistan in the first week of April to take on a daring challenge in the world's highest mountain range. Their goal was to heli-ski in the 5,000 meter high peaks of the Karakoram Range, that has four of the world's fourteen peaks with a height of 8,000 meters and above. In the event, nicknamed "Pakistan Pure Discovery", the heli-skiers from France, Canada, Russia, Serbia, Ireland and Switzerland, gathered in Skardu from where they were transported to the peaks by helicopter. The Skardu valley, situated at an altitude of nearly 8,200 ft above sea level, is surrounded by K2, which is the second highest peak in the world. Among the group was Samyra Rashid, a Pakistani designer who runs a successful women's fashion business. She became the first Pakistani as well as the first woman to ski in the Karakoram range. [Samyra Rashid, Pakistani Skier]: "Its been the most amazing opportunity in the world to come here and ski in the Karakoram mountain range. We have brought skiers from all over the world, from Russia, from Serbia, from Canada, from Switzerland, and they have skied everywhere in the world you can imagine." The heli-ski event was organised by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) in collaboration with the Walkabout Films, a Pakistani film production company that focuses on extreme sports, wildlife and natural heritage. [Yann Gergest, Swiss Skier]: "Its been an amazing trip and we have been so well received by the locals and the army. And skiing among some of the highest peaks in the world has been just incredible. For me, as a Swiss guy, I've skied all over the world, but Pakistan is really the highlight of my skiing life." Officials of the ISPR said the purpose of the event was to showcase the spectacular beauty, challenging peaks and potential of extreme sports in the restive Northern Areas of the country. [Brice Lequetier, French Skier, European Champion]: "We managed to get dropped at an altitude of almost 5,000 meters, with our skis and mountain equipment, and we skied down. So far it's a great success, because its very exciting to do something new, something that nobody has even done before." In 2003, Lequetier climbed Mount Everest and skied down. [Cedonir Chadda, Serb Skier]: "We are the first men on this beautiful part of Himalayan Karakoram range, and really my advice is that everybody has to see Pakistan." The region is often cut off from the rest of the country during the freezing winter months. (thanks to NDTV text)- published: 04 Jan 2014

The Kingdom of Karakoram
The Kingdom of Karakoram
Karakoram is a large mountain range spanning the borders between Pakistan, India and China, located in the regions of Gilgit--Baltistan (Pakistan), Ladakh (India), and Xinjiang region, (China). It is one of the Greater Ranges of Asia. The Karakoram is home to the highest concentration of peaks over 8000m in height to be found anywhere on earth,[1] including K2, the second highest peak in the world 8,611 m (28,251 ft). The range is about 500 km (311 mi) in length, and is the most heavily glaciated part of the world outside the polar regions. The Siachen Glacier at 70 kilometres (43 mi) and the Biafo Glacier at 63 kilometres (39 mi) rank as the world's second and third longest glaciers outside the polar regions. Some of the debris-covered Karakoram glaciers are found to be expanding but other ones are retreating.- published: 24 Feb 2014
