His oratory skills and radical nationalist ideas gained him a significant following. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari: From Caligari to Hitler
This video is the third in a series on German Expressionism. It provides an overview of the film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Wiene, 1920), focusing on allegorical interpretations of its plot and themes of authority and obedience. Special attention is paid to Frankfurt School theorist Siegfried Kracauer's reading of the film from his 1947 book From Caligari to Hitler. Finally, the video turns to a brief examination of Guillermo del Toro as a filmmaker whose body of work resonates deeply with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, from his emphasis on fantastical mise-en-scene and dark imagery to his consistent interest in authoritarian figures, fascism, and disobedience. A brief comparison is made between Pan's Labyrinth and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

00:00:02:11 - A Dictator (1934-1936)
Hitler's power has become unrestricted and unlimited. Hitler is admired by the people. Germany feels strong again, and people accept the merciless dictatorship and the persecution of others as a necessary evil.
00:51:59:24 - The Fuehrer (1936 - 1937)
Hitler's fame reaches its climax. Germany is simultaneously admired and feared by foreign countries. In 1936, the Wehrmacht invades the Rhineland, a demilitarized zone by the Treaty of Versailles. The Nuremberg party rallies are a magnificent spectacle of the ever-growing leadership cult. The Summer Olympics in 1936 show Hitler's popularity internationally.
01:40:53:05 - A Statesman (1937 - 1938)
In Benito Mussolini, Hitler finds an ally to whom he remains faithful until his downfall. Hitler and Goebbels begin a pogrom night against the Jews; Hitler sets up a secret life in Obersalzberg and conceals his mistress Eva Braun from the public eye.
02:30:48:11 - An Arsonist (1939)
In pure breach of the Munich Agreement, Hitler claims further territories for Germany based on the alleged wish of the people in those areas. After the occupation of Czechoslovakia, the world is duped and are waiting to see if Germany will risk European peace.

Caligari.
