Michael Seifert (March 16, 1924 — November 6, 2010) was an SS guard in Italy during World War II.
He was born in Landau (present-day Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine). Dubbed the "Beast of Bolzano", he was convicted in absentia in 2000 by a military tribunal in Verona, Italy, on nine counts of murder, committed while he was an SS guard at the Bolzano Transit Camp, northern Italy.
He was sentenced to life in prison and extradited on February 17, 2008 from Canada to Italy. His crimes involved actions taken in a prison camp in Bolzano from 1944 to 1945. At his trial, witnesses accused him of leaving a prisoner to starve to death, raping and killing a pregnant woman and gouging an inmate's eyes out.
Avi Benlolo, president of the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies in Canada, noted that Seifert's imprisonment "sets an example for other war criminals, not only Nazi war criminals, but war criminals related to Rwanda, Bosnia, Darfur or any other genocide, that there's no time limit to justice".
After his extradition to Italy from Canada, Seifert was held in an Italian military prison in Santa Maria Capua Vetere. Prosecutors from Italy and Germany intended to interview him regarding other war crimes that may have taken place at Bolzano.
He died in 2010 in Santa Maria after having been transferred to a hospital from the Capua Vetere prison.
Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol is an autonomous region in Northern Italy. Since the 1970s most legislative and administrative competencies have been transferred to the two autonomous provinces which make up the region: Trentino and South Tyrol. The region was part of Austria-Hungary and its predecessors, the Austrian Empire and the Holy Roman Empire from the 8th century until its annexation by Italy in 1919. Together with the Austrian state of Tyrol it is represented by the Euroregion Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino. In English, the region is also known as Trentino-South Tyrol or by its Italian name Trentino-Alto Adige. It was inhabited by the Raetian Isarci people and the Romans built a settlement there after the area was conquered in 15 BC by general Nero Claudius Drusus, after whom the settlement Pons Drusi ("Drusus Bridge") was named. The nearby village was called Bauzanum. With the end of the Roman empire a Bavarian immigration began and the first mention of a Bavarian count as ruler of Bolzano dates from 679. The area has been settled by German populations since then. Bolzano became an important trading point after its elevation to a town on 24 June 1190 by bishop Konrad of Trent owing to its location between the two major cities of Venice and Augsburg. Four times a year a market was held and traders came from the south and the north. The mercantile magistrate was therefore founded in 1635. Every market season two Italic and two Germanic officers (appointed from the traders who operated there) worked in this office. The city was a cultural crosspoint at that time and still is to this day. Before World War I Bolzano was part of the Austro-Hungarian county of Tyrol. It was annexed by Italy at the end of World War I and on 1 January 1927 became a provincial capital. At the time of its annexation Bolzano was primarily a German-speaking city, with a pre-war population of 30,000 people. In the 1920s, along with the rest of the province, the city was subjected to an intensive Italianization programme under orders from Benito Mussolini. The aim was to outnumber the local German-speaking population by tripling the population with Italian-speaking immigrants drawn from the old provinces. During World War II Bolzano was the site of the Nazi Bolzano Transit Camp, a concentration camp for Jews and political prisoners. According to the 2011 census 73.80% of the city's inhabitants speak Italian, 25.52% German and 0.68% Ladin as their first language. The city thrives on a mix of old and new high-quality intensive agriculture (including wine, fruit and dairy products), tourism, traditional handicraft (wood, ceramics) and advanced services. Heavy industry (machinery, automotive, steel) installed during the 1930s has now been mostly dismantled. On the downside, the local economy is very dependent on the public sector and especially the provincial government. Bolzano is the biggest city in South Tyrol, which is an autonomous province in Northern Italy with a special statute. This statute preserves the rights of the German-speaking minority in Italy. This unique system has been admired by the Dalai Lama, who visited the city on several occasions to study a possible application in Chinese-occupied Tibet. It has also been presented as role model for the successful and fair resolution of inter-ethnic conflict to other regions of the world.
Its mediaeval city centre, Gothic and Romanesque churches and bilingual signage give it the flavour of a city at the crossroads of Italian and Austrian cultures. This and its natural and cultural attractions make it a popular tourist destination. The town is host to an annual road running competition the BOclassic which features an elite men's 10K and women's 5K races. The event, first held in 1975, takes place on New Year's Eve and is broadcast live on television by Rai Sport Più. Bolzano is also the host city to the Giro delle Dolomiti annual road bike event.

E' un continuo "tran tran" di Frecce ai binari 3 e 4 della stazione di Firenze Rifredi. Proprio al binario 3, infatti, transitano i treni provenienti da sud che appena usciti dall'AV si dirigono verso la stazione di Firenze Santa Maria Novella, e al binario 4 transitano invece i treni che da Firenze Castello viaggeranno in AV verso nord. Nel video il transito alla stazione di Firenze Rifredi del FRECCIAROSSA 9540 Napoli Centrale - Milano Centrale e del FRECCIARGENTO 9481 (effettuato con materiale ETR485) Bolzano - Roma Termini (nel video, numerazione, provenienza e destinazione sono errate). Buona visione!

In the movie, the FRECCIAROSSA train 9540 Naples - Milan and the FRECCIARGENTO train from Bolzano to Rome transit at Rifredi station. (train information in the video are incorrect). Enjoy!

I arrived in Chiusaforte on the evening of 6 June 2013 when this was filmed. I was in transit between Sicily and Ukraine and this seemed a good place to stop the night. I think that transiting through this narrow valley is something people have been doing for a very long time as it was probably on the site of a Roman Road from Italy to the Noricum province.
Many years later, Ulric von Eppenstein, Patriarch of Aquileia (1086-1121) had a similar idea. He had a fortress erected to charge tolls to travellers crossing the Alps. The Patriarchs had to defend their territory against the claims raised by the Counts of Görz and the Dukes of Carinthia, until in 1420 the Republic of Venice conquered the Fella Valley up to Pontebba and incorporated it into the Domini di Terraferma.
Annexed by the Habsburg Monarchy as a result of the 1797 Treaty of Campo Formio it was part of the Austrian Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia from 1815, until it fell with Venetia to the newly established Kingdom of Italy according to the 1866 Treaty of Vienna.
During WW1 the village was captured by the Austrians following the Italian collapse at Caporetto. I give an analysis of the fighting in that war during my walk around the village.
The population today is around 800 people - after WW1 it was around 3,000 people. You can see quite a lot of abandoned housing in this film, some of which is clearly military.
Chiusaforte is located about 90 kilometres northwest of Trieste and about 40 km north of Udine, as you may have noticed if you have been following my journey. Chiusaforte is situated in the Canal del Ferro valley of the Fella River, running between the Carnic and Julian Alps to its confluence with the Tagliamento.
Chiusaforte borders the following municipalities: Dogna, Malborghetto Valbruna, Moggio Udinese, Bovec (Slovenia), Resia, Resiutta, Tarvisio.
The Fella Valley is the site of Pontebbana railway line from Udine to Tarvisio and the Austrian border. It is also traversed by the parallel Italian Autostrada A23 highway from Palmanova to Tarvisio which you can see in the distance in this film.

Internment is the imprisonment or confinement of people, commonly in large groups, without trial. The Oxford English Dictionary (1989) gives the meaning as: "The action of 'interning'; confinement within the limits of a country or place."
Most modern usage is about individuals, and there is a distinction between internment, which is being confined usually for preventive or political reasons, and imprisonment, which is being closely confined as a punishment for crime.
Internment also refers to the practice of neutral countries in time of war in detaining belligerent armed forces and equipment in their territories under the Second Hague Convention.
Early civilizations such as Assyria used forced resettlement of populations as a means of controlling territory, but it was not until much later in the late 19th and 20th centuries that records exist of groups of civilian non-combatants being concentrated into large prison camps.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights restricts the use of internment. Article 9 states that "No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile."

The Bolzano transit camp (German: Polizei- und Durchgangslager Bozen) was a Nazi concentration camp active in Bolzano between 1944 and the end of the Second World War. It was one of the largest Nazi Lager on Italian soil, along with those of Fossoli, Borgo San Dalmazzo and Trieste.
After the Allies signed the Armistice with Italy on September 8, 1943, Bolzano became the headquarters of the Prealpine Operations Zone and came under the control of the Nazi army. When the internment camp in Fossoli became vulnerable to Allied attack, it was dismantled, and a transit camp for prisoners headed for Mauthausen, Flossenbürg, Dachau, Ravensbrück and Auschwitz was set up in Bolzano.
Operative as of the summer of 1944 and located in buildings previously occupied by the Italian Army, the transit camp hosted about 11,000 prisoners from middle and northern Italy in its ten months of activity. Although the camp's population consisted mostly of political opponents, Jewish and gypsy deportees also passed through its barracks.

Michael Seifert (March 16, 1924 — November 6, 2010) was an SS guard in Italy during World War II. He was born in Landau (present-day Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine). Dubbed the "Beast of Bolzano", he was convicted in absentia in 2000 by a military tribunal in Verona, Italy, on nine counts of murder, committed while he was an SS guard at the Bolzano Transit Camp, northern Italy. He was sentenced to life in prison and extradited on February 17, 2008 from Canada to Italy. His crimes involved actions taken in a prison camp in Bolzano from 1944 to 1945. At his trial, witnesses accused him of leaving a prisoner to starve to death, raping and killing a pregnant woman and gouging an inmate's eyes out. Avi Benlolo, president of the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies in Canada, noted that Seifert's imprisonment "sets an example for other war criminals, not only Nazi war criminals, but war criminals related to Rwanda, Bosnia, Darfur or any other genocide, that there's no time limit to justice". After his extradition to Italy from Canada, Seifert was held in an Italian military prison in Santa Maria Capua Vetere. Prosecutors from Italy and Germany intended to interview him regarding other war crimes that may have taken place at Bolzano. He died in 2010 in Santa Maria after having been transferred to a hospital from the Capua Vetere prison. -

Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol is an autonomous region in Northern Italy. Since the 1970s most legislative and administrative competencies have been transferred to the two autonomous provinces which make up the region: Trentino and South Tyrol. The region was part of Austria-Hungary and its predecessors, the Austrian Empire and the Holy Roman Empire from the 8th century until its annexation by Italy in 1919. Together with the Austrian state of Tyrol it is represented by the Euroregion Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino. In English, the region is also known as Trentino-South Tyrol or by its Italian name Trentino-Alto Adige. It was inhabited by the Raetian Isarci people and the Romans built a settlement there after the area was conquered in 15 BC by general Nero Claudius Drusus, after whom the settlement Pons Drusi ("Drusus Bridge") was named. The nearby village was called Bauzanum. With the end of the Roman empire a Bavarian immigration began and the first mention of a Bavarian count as ruler of Bolzano dates from 679. The area has been settled by German populations since then. Bolzano became an important trading point after its elevation to a town on 24 June 1190 by bishop Konrad of Trent owing to its location between the two major cities of Venice and Augsburg. Four times a year a market was held and traders came from the south and the north. The mercantile magistrate was therefore founded in 1635. Every market season two Italic and two Germanic officers (appointed from the traders who operated there) worked in this office. The city was a cultural crosspoint at that time and still is to this day. Before World War I Bolzano was part of the Austro-Hungarian county of Tyrol. It was annexed by Italy at the end of World War I and on 1 January 1927 became a provincial capital. At the time of its annexation Bolzano was primarily a German-speaking city, with a pre-war population of 30,000 people. In the 1920s, along with the rest of the province, the city was subjected to an intensive Italianization programme under orders from Benito Mussolini. The aim was to outnumber the local German-speaking population by tripling the population with Italian-speaking immigrants drawn from the old provinces. During World War II Bolzano was the site of the Nazi Bolzano Transit Camp, a concentration camp for Jews and political prisoners. According to the 2011 census 73.80% of the city's inhabitants speak Italian, 25.52% German and 0.68% Ladin as their first language. The city thrives on a mix of old and new high-quality intensive agriculture (including wine, fruit and dairy products), tourism, traditional handicraft (wood, ceramics) and advanced services. Heavy industry (machinery, automotive, steel) installed during the 1930s has now been mostly dismantled. On the downside, the local economy is very dependent on the public sector and especially the provincial government. Bolzano is the biggest city in South Tyrol, which is an autonomous province in Northern Italy with a special statute. This statute preserves the rights of the German-speaking minority in Italy. This unique system has been admired by the Dalai Lama, who visited the city on several occasions to study a possible application in Chinese-occupied Tibet. It has also been presented as role model for the successful and fair resolution of inter-ethnic conflict to other regions of the world. Its mediaeval city centre, Gothic and Romanesque churches and bilingual signage give it the flavour of a city at the crossroads of Italian and Austrian cultures. This and its natural and cultural attractions make it a popular tourist destination. The town is host to an annual road running competition the BOclassic which features an elite men's 10K and women's 5K races. The event, first held in 1975, takes place on New Year's Eve and is broadcast live on television by Rai Sport Più. Bolzano is also the host city to the Giro delle Dolomiti annual road bike event. -

Nel video il transito alla stazione di Firenze Rifredi del FRECCIAROSSA 9540 Napoli Centrale - Milano Centrale e del FRECCIARGENTO 9481 (effettuato con materiale ETR485) Bolzano - Roma Termini (nel video, numerazione, provenienza e destinazione sono errate). SEE MY MOTORHOME GROUP ON FACEBOOK : https://www.facebook.com/motorhomefulltime I arrived in Chiusaforte on the evening of 6 June 2013 when this was filmed. I was in transit between Sicily and Ukraine and this seemed a good place to stop the night. I think that transiting through this narrow valley is something people have been doing for a very long time as it was probably on the site of a Roman Road from Italy to the Noricum province. Many years later, Ulric von Eppenstein, Patriarch of Aquileia (1086-1121) had a similar idea. He had a fortress erected to charge tolls to travellers crossing the Alps. The Patriarchs had to defend their territory against the claims raised by the Counts of Görz and the Dukes of Carinthia, until in 1420 the Republic of Venice conquered the Fella Valley up to Pontebba and incorporated it into the Domini di Terraferma. Annexed by the Habsburg Monarchy as a result of the 1797 Treaty of Campo Formio it was part of the Austrian Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia from 1815, until it fell with Venetia to the newly established Kingdom of Italy according to the 1866 Treaty of Vienna. During WW1 the village was captured by the Austrians following the Italian collapse at Caporetto. I give an analysis of the fighting in that war during my walk around the village. The population today is around 800 people - after WW1 it was around 3,000 people. You can see quite a lot of abandoned housing in this film, some of which is clearly military. Chiusaforte is located about 90 kilometres northwest of Trieste and about 40 km north of Udine, as you may have noticed if you have been following my journey. Chiusaforte is situated in the Canal del Ferro valley of the Fella River, running between the Carnic and Julian Alps to its confluence with the Tagliamento. Chiusaforte borders the following municipalities: Dogna, Malborghetto Valbruna, Moggio Udinese, Bovec (Slovenia), Resia, Resiutta, Tarvisio. The Fella Valley is the site of Pontebbana railway line from Udine to Tarvisio and the Austrian border. It is also traversed by the parallel Italian Autostrada A23 highway from Palmanova to Tarvisio which you can see in the distance in this film. Micheal Seifert - Beast of Bolzano dies.avi
Michael Seifert (March 16, 1924 — November 6, 2010) was an SS guard in Italy during World War II. He was born in Landau (present-day Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine). Dubbed the "Beast of Bolzano", he was convicted in absentia in 2000 by a military tribunal in Verona, Italy, on nine counts of murder, committed while he was an SS guard at the Bolzano Transit Camp, northern Italy. He was sentenced to life in prison and extradited on February 17, 2008 from Canada to Italy. His crimes involved actions taken in a prison camp in Bolzano from 1944 to 1945. At his trial, witnesses accused him of leaving a prisoner to starve to death, raping and killing a pregnant woman and gouging an inmate's eyes out. He was born in Landau (present-day Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine). Dubbed the "Beast of Bolzano", he was convicted in absentia in 2000 by a military tribunal in Verona, Italy, on nine counts of murder, committed while he was an SS guard at the Bolzano Transit Camp, northern Italy.
He was sentenced to life in prison and extradited on February 17, 2008 from Canada to Italy. His crimes involved actions taken in a prison camp in Bolzano from 1944 to 1945. At his trial, witnesses accused him of leaving a prisoner to starve to death, raping and killing a pregnant woman and gouging an inmate's eyes out.
Avi Benlolo, president of the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies in Canada, noted that Seifert's imprisonment "sets an example for other war criminals, not only Nazi war criminals, but war criminals related to Rwanda, Bosnia, Darfur or any other genocide, that there's no time limit to justice".
After his extradition to Italy from Canada, Seifert was held in an Italian military prison in Santa Maria Capua Vetere. Prosecutors from Italy and Germany intended to interview him regarding other war crimes that may have taken place at Bolzano.
He died in 2010 in Santa Maria after having been transferred to a hospital from the Capua Vetere prison.

Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol is an autonomous region in Northern Italy. Since the 1970s most legislative and administrative competencies have been transferred to the two autonomous provinces which make up the region: Trentino and South Tyrol. The region was part of Austria-Hungary and its predecessors, the Austrian Empire and the Holy Roman Empire from the 8th century until its annexation by Italy in 1919. Together with the Austrian state of Tyrol it is represented by the Euroregion Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino. In English, the region is also known as Trentino-South Tyrol or by its Italian name Trentino-Alto Adige. It was inhabited by the Raetian Isarci people and the Romans built a settlement there after the area was conquered in 15 BC by general Nero Claudius Drusus, after whom the settlement Pons Drusi ("Drusus Bridge") was named. The nearby village was called Bauzanum. With the end of the Roman empire a Bavarian immigration began and the first mention of a Bavarian count as ruler of Bolzano dates from 679. The area has been settled by German populations since then. Bolzano became an important trading point after its elevation to a town on 24 June 1190 by bishop Konrad of Trent owing to its location between the two major cities of Venice and Augsburg. Four times a year a market was held and traders came from the south and the north. The mercantile magistrate was therefore founded in 1635. Every market season two Italic and two Germanic officers (appointed from the traders who operated there) worked in this office. The city was a cultural crosspoint at that time and still is to this day. Before World War I Bolzano was part of the Austro-Hungarian county of Tyrol. It was annexed by Italy at the end of World War I and on 1 January 1927 became a provincial capital. At the time of its annexation Bolzano was primarily a German-speaking city, with a pre-war population of 30,000 people. In the 1920s, along with the rest of the province, the city was subjected to an intensive Italianization programme under orders from Benito Mussolini. The aim was to outnumber the local German-speaking population by tripling the population with Italian-speaking immigrants drawn from the old provinces. During World War II Bolzano was the site of the Nazi Bolzano Transit Camp, a concentration camp for Jews and political prisoners. According to the 2011 census 73.80% of the city's inhabitants speak Italian, 25.52% German and 0.68% Ladin as their first language. The city thrives on a mix of old and new high-quality intensive agriculture (including wine, fruit and dairy products), tourism, traditional handicraft (wood, ceramics) and advanced services. Heavy industry (machinery, automotive, steel) installed during the 1930s has now been mostly dismantled. On the downside, the local economy is very dependent on the public sector and especially the provincial government. Bolzano is the biggest city in South Tyrol, which is an autonomous province in Northern Italy with a special statute. This statute preserves the rights of the German-speaking minority in Italy. This unique system has been admired by the Dalai Lama, who visited the city on several occasions to study a possible application in Chinese-occupied Tibet. Proprio al binario 3, infatti, transitano i treni provenienti da sud che appena usciti dall'AV si dirigono verso la stazione di Firenze Santa Maria Novella, e al binario 4 transitano invece i treni che da Firenze Castello viaggeranno in AV verso nord. Nel video il transito alla stazione di Firenze Rifredi del FRECCIAROSSA 9540 Napoli Centrale - Milano Centrale e del FRECCIARGENTO 9481 (effettuato con materiale ETR485) Bolzano - Roma Termini (nel video, numerazione, provenienza e destinazione sono errate). Buona visione!

I arrived in Chiusaforte on the evening of 6 June 2013 when this was filmed. I was in transit between Sicily and Ukraine and this seemed a good place to stop the night. I think that transiting through this narrow valley is something people have been doing for a very long time as it was probably on the site of a Roman Road from Italy to the Noricum province.
Many years later, Ulric von Eppenstein, Patriarch of Aquileia (1086-1121) had a similar idea. He had a fortress erected to charge tolls to travellers crossing the Alps. The Patriarchs had to defend their territory against the claims raised by the Counts of Görz and the Dukes of Carinthia, until in 1420 the Republic of Venice conquered the Fella Valley up to Pontebba and incorporated it into the Domini di Terraferma.
Annexed by the Habsburg Monarchy as a result of the 1797 Treaty of Campo Formio it was part of the Austrian Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia from 1815, until it fell with Venetia to the newly established Kingdom of Italy according to the 1866 Treaty of Vienna.
During WW1 the village was captured by the Austrians following the Italian collapse at Caporetto. I give an analysis of the fighting in that war during my walk around the village.
The population today is around 800 people - after WW1 it was around 3,000 people. You can see quite a lot of abandoned housing in this film, some of which is clearly military.
Chiusaforte is located about 90 kilometres northwest of Trieste and about 40 km north of Udine, as you may have noticed if you have been following my journey. Chiusaforte is situated in the Canal del Ferro valley of the Fella River, running between the Carnic and Julian Alps to its confluence with the Tagliamento.
Chiusaforte borders the following municipalities: Dogna, Malborghetto Valbruna, Moggio Udinese, Bovec (Slovenia), Resia, Resiutta, Tarvisio.
The Fella Valley is the site of Pontebbana railway line from Udine to Tarvisio and the Austrian border. It is also traversed by the parallel Italian Autostrada A23 highway from Palmanova to Tarvisio which you can see in the distance in this film.

Lake Garda Italy Highlights and Attractions (Lago Di Garda)
Edited video and still images from my vacation in Malcesine, Lake Garda in August 2013, staying at the wonderful Hotel Vega. I'd highly recommend Malcesine as a lovely picturesque town to stay in, relax and explore. It has bags of character and plenty to do, but is also a useful base, at the more Northern end of the Lake, so access to Limone, Torbole and Riva is easy using the passenger ferry. Food is excellent wherever you go in Italy. The day trip to Venice was a must, however due to the searing heat and endless streams of tourists (I know I was part of the problem!) it was difficult to enjoy at the time, but now looking back at my footage of the Gondola ride I'm quite enjoying it more now in retrospect. The region’s metropolis is Bolzano-Bozen, which is situated in a valley basin that opens up to the south. The symbol of the city is its Late Gothic Bishop Church and in the adjoining Baroque chapel, there is a collection of priceless frescos. The stone images and grotesque symbols on its facade indicate the great influence of the basic doctrines of the Church. In the small alleys of the picturesque old town, the houses have arcades that are known as Lauben. Luxurious middle-class houses with artistically painted facades adorn the alleys of the old town that was used by the Romans as a central resting place while traveling to the north. Bruneck-Brunico is the main village of Puster Valley. In 1250, Prince Bishop Bruno von Kirchberg of Bruneck built this strongly fortified city and castle against the monarchs of the Tyrol. The rows of houses in the Stadtgasse date back to the 15th and 16th centuries and make it one of the most beautiful streets in the Tyrol.High on a rock at the entrance to the Valle Aurina-Ahrntal is Taufers Castle, one of the mightiest fortified buildings in the Tyrol.For history combined with fairytale scenery, the Alto Aldige is the place to be!

I'd highly recommend Malcesine as a lovely picturesque town to stay in, relax and explore. It has bags of character and plenty to do, but is also a useful base, at the more Northern end of the Lake, so access to Limone, Torbole and Riva is easy using the passenger ferry.
Food is excellent wherever you go in Italy.
The day trip to Venice was a must, however due to the searing heat and endless streams of tourists (I know I was part of the problem!) it was difficult to enjoy at the time, but now looking back at my footage of the Gondola ride I'm quite enjoying it more now in retrospect.
The day trip to Bolzano and Renon was really pleasant; a 2 hour easy coach ride to Bolzano, a pretty town with attractive, colourful buildings and great cable car ride into the mountains where we completed the rest of the climb by tram. Renon gave us great views across the mountains (I think The Dolomites were visible in the background), and some very interesting 'earth pyramids'.

The Strada Delle Dolomiti that stretches across 109 kilometre across the mountain landscape of the Southern Tyrol is a superb and dramatic experience in any season.Past centuries-old farmhouses, mountain peaks tease the sky majestically and whether it’s mountain climbing or hiking, the Dolomites offer something for everyone and for motorcars, cyclists and motorbikes, the mountain roads pose a real challenge. Three pinnacles are considered to be the essence of the Dolomites, namely the Western, Large and Small Pinnacle. The view of the three pinnacles is magnificent as Nature manifests itself as the petrified air of high altitude, the fickleness of the wind and the blinding light of eternal snow. Cortina D´Ampezzo is Italy’s main alpine resort and visitors from all over the world holiday in this splendid town the centre of which has a good deal of old world charm and where the facades of its chalets and hotels are covered with frescos painted by great artists. The stretch of land from the Schlüterhütte to the Grödner Joch has been described as “a pearl of a landscape”. The route travels across small peaks and leads to a meadow of edelweiss and a mountain journey via cable car brings the steep mountain walls to within one’s grasp. At the Giro d´Italia, the world’s finest cyclists fight it out over several Dolomite passes. One of the laps crosses the highest point, the Pordoi Pass. For those who wish to spend some time here, there are several first class hotels, well-equipped Alpine chalets and comfortable guesthouses. The Dolomites have been granted the status of World Heritage Site by Unesco, a small section of Planet Earth that should be nurtured, quite rightly, as though it is a unique and rare work of natural art.
