Following a Celt (after c. 450 BC) and a Roman (AD 9 - c. 430) period, the foundation of Hungary was laid in the late 9th century by the Hungarian prince Árpád, whose great-grandson Saint Stephen I was crowned with a crown sent by the pope from Rome in 1000 AD. The Kingdom of Hungary lasted for 946 years, and at various points was regarded as one of the cultural centres of the Western world. After about 150 years of partial Ottoman occupation (1541–1699), Hungary was integrated into the Habsburg Monarchy, and later constituted half of the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy (1867–1918).
World War I (WWI), which was predominantly called the World War or the Great War from its occurrence until 1939 (World War II), and the First World War or World War I thereafter, was a major war centred in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. It involved all the world's great powers, which were assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies (based on the Triple Entente of the United Kingdom, France and Russia) and the Central Powers (originally centred around the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy; but, as Austria–Hungary had taken the offensive against the agreement, Italy did not enter into the war). These alliances both reorganised (Italy fought for the Allies), and expanded as more nations entered the war. Ultimately more than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilised in one of the largest wars in history. More than 9 million combatants were killed, largely because of enormous increases in lethality of weapons, thanks to new technology, without corresponding improvements in protection or mobility. It was the sixth-deadliest conflict in world history, subsequently paving the way for various political changes such as revolutions in the nations involved.

The Austro-Hungarian army resembles a better militia after six months into the war. After defeats against Serbia and Russia and still under siege in Galicia, the forces are in dire straits. Many casualties, especially among the officers, mean that an effective warfare is impossible. And all this while the Russians are close to entering the Hungarian plains. On another front, the Russians are winning the battle of Sarikamish which ends in a disaster for the Ottoman Empire. On the Western Front, each side still tries to gain a decisive advantage.

Austria was ruled by the Habsburg dynasty from 1278/1282 to 1918. Therefore, historical Austria is also known as the Habsburg Empire or the Habsburg Monarchy. Soon afterwards they inherited many more lands by their marriage policies. During the 16th century, the Habsburgs ruled over large parts of Europe. Charles V reigned over perhaps a quarter of the European population (not to speak of his enormous American colonial empire). The centuries afterwards Austria remained a great power until World War I, when the nationalistic thoughts in Europe finally divided the old empire into many small states.
It's important to put in mind that Austria has always been a "part" of Germany until the 19th century. Indeed, the German Empire didn't exist until 1871, but the Germans (Austrians included) more or less realized they shared a similar language and culture, and the medieval Holy Roman Empire actually was for the most part a German state until it fell apart in the fatal 13th century. Since 1452, the Habsburgs were (with one short exception) the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, which was by now virtually a very loose confederation of states. However, the position of the Holy Roman Emperor gave the Habsburgs privileges and some sort of loyalty from the German princes, although some monarchs—most notably the Prussian kings—openly contested Habsburg primacy. The Austrians were finally abandoned outside the German Empire in 1871.
Music:
Johann Strauss II - An der schönen blauen Donau (English title: The Blue Danube), composed in 1866.

Vienna is one of the world's most beautiful, historic cities, brimming with nostalgia and with all the grand architecture of a once glorious empire, for three centuries it was home to the Austrian monarchy.
The architectural image of the city is dominated by the Ringstrasse, a four kilometre long boulevard which encircles the centre of the city.
It was under the supervision of Maria Theresia that the magnificent royal residence, the Schönbrunn Palace, was completed. More than 1,700 beautifully-preserved rooms afforded the large Imperial family much freedom of movement and its magnificent int

Today, visitors flock to Vienna, to experience a dynamic art culture, set amidst
historic streets where strauss’ waltzes still seem to echo. They come to drink coffee where some of the world’s greatest thinkers spent time and enjoy some of the world’s most magnificent artworks.
Join locals for a game of pool or a discussion on philosophy at Cafe Sperl.
Visit the Demel Bakery, the original confectioners to the Austrian Royal Family. Order a sachentorte - a traditional chocolate cake and relax with an international newspaper.
Stroll to the Vienna State Opera, considered one of the greatest opera houses in the world. Take a backstage tour, learn the story of this historic place and see the hidden machinery that creates the performance magic.
A little further along the ring is the Hofburg Imperial Palace. This impressive palace was home to the Hapsburg dynasty who ruled the area for centuries and currently serves as the official residence for the President of Austria.
Examine ancient manuscripts and see the some of the earliest globes in the Austrian National Library which is also housed here.
Take the time to enjoy the Volksgarten - or people’s garden - famous for its more than 400 species of roses and the Theseus Temple in its centre. There are 2000 parks in Vienna so there is always somewhere nearby to relax.
Layered with history, Vienna is a truly international city. Explore monumental palaces and priceless artworks, all set amidst a cafe culture that changed the world.

Vienna (/viːˈɛnə/; German: About this sound Wien (help·info) [viːn], Austro-Bavarian: Wean) is the capital and largest city of Austria, and one of the nine states of Austria. Vienna is Austria's primary city, with a population of about 1.757 million[5] (2.4 million within the metropolitan area,[4] more than 20% of Austria's population), and its cultural, economic, and political centre. It is the 7th-largest city by population within city limits in the European Union. Until the beginning of the 20th century it was the largest German-speaking city in the world, and before the splitting of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in World War I the city had 2 million inhabitants.[6] Today it is the second only to Berlin in German speakers.[7][8] Vienna is host to many major international organizations, including the United Nations and OPEC. The city lies in the east of Austria and is close to the borders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. These regions work together in a European Centrope border region. Along with nearby Bratislava, Vienna forms a metropolitan region with 3 million inhabitants. In 2001, the city centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.[9]
Apart from being regarded as the City of Music[10] because of its musical legacy, Vienna is also said to be "The City of Dreams" because it was home to the world's first psycho-analyst -- Sigmund Freud.[11] The city's roots lie in early Celtic and Roman settlements that transformed into a Medieval and Baroque city, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is well known for having played an essential role as a leading European music centre, from the great age of Viennese Classicism through the early part of the 20th century. The historic centre of Vienna is rich in architectural ensembles, including Baroque castles and gardens, and the late-19th-century Ringstrasse lined with grand buildings, monuments and parks.[12]
In a 2005 study of 127 world cities, the Economist Intelligence Unit ranked the city first (in a tie with Vancouver, Canada) for the world's most livable cities (in the 2012 survey of 140 cities Vienna was ranked number two, behind Melbourne).[13][14][15] For four consecutive years (2009--2012), the human-resource-consulting firm Mercer ranked Vienna first in its annual "Quality of Living" survey of hundreds of cities around the world, a title the city has reclaimed in 2014.[16][17][18][19][20] Monocle's 2012 "Quality of Life Survey" ranked Vienna fourth on a list of the top 25 cities in the world "to make a base within" (up from sixth in 2011 and eighth in 2010).[21][22][23][24]
The city was ranked 1st globally for its culture of innovation in 2007 and 2008, and fifth globally (out of 256 cities) in the 2011 Innovation Cities Index, which analyzed 162 indicators in covering three areas: culture, infrastructure and markets.[25] Vienna regularly hosts urban planning conferences and is often used as a case study by urban planners.[26]
Each year since 2005, Vienna has been the world's number one destination for international congresses and conventions.[27] It attracts about five million tourists a year.[28]

Travel video about destination Tyrol.
The Tyrol is a picturesque federal state in the west of Austria and one of the most beautiful areas in Europe set within the magnificent Alps. It boasts many ancient towns, monasteries and fortresses that highlight the region’s history.Kitzbühel was once a prosperous mining town but today it is a world famous ski resort that is also popular in the summer months. The old town, with its pretty middle class buildings that date back to the fifteenth century, is a fine example of Austria’s rural architecture. Westendorf was judged to be the most beautiful village in Europe and not without reason as it nestles picturesquely within a fertile high valley on the northern slopes of the Kitzbüheler Alps, an oasis of relaxation in contrast to the busy tourist centres of the surrounding area. The Fohlenhof Ebbs Stud at the foot of the Kaiser Mountains is the official location of the Tyrol Horse Breeding Union and is where the famous Haflinger horses are bred. Further west of the Inntal the Alpbach Tal leads into an untouched natural landscape. At an altitude of nine hundred and seventy five metres above sea level is the remote mountain village of Alpbach, the most beautiful village in the Tyrol which has maintained its traditional character with typical timber built farmhouses and balconies decorated with flowers. At the junction of Unter-Inntal and Ober-Inntal is the Tyrol’s metropolis of Innsbruck, the Florence Of The North. The nearby mountains form a magnificent backdrop for the Late Gothic city centre whose main street leads from the Triumph Pforte to as far as the Annasäule and then on to the Golden Dachl. Today this popular Alpine holiday region welcomes international visitors throughout the year and is most deservedly referred to as a natural treasure in the very heart of Europe!

Travel video about destination Vienna in Austria.
More than 1,700 beautifully-preserved rooms afforded the large Imperial family much freedom of movement and its magnificent interior décor is one of the most lavish of its time. The Palace Grounds contain the outstanding Neptune Fountain and at the highest point, the Gloriette, from which the entire palace grounds are visible, as well as the charming Schönbrunn Zoo, the oldest animal enclosure in the world.
St. Stephen's Cathedral dominates the centre of Vienna and not far away behind the State Opera House, is the venerable Hotel Sacher, with its old Viennese coffee house.
Johann Strauss, the Vienna Boys' Choir, Lipizzaner horses and Heurige wine, Vienna is a city of irresistible charm!

Ring of Steel: Germany and Austria-Hungary in World War I — Download

For Germany and Austria-Hungary the First World War started with high hopes for a rapid, decisive outcome. Convinced that right was on their side and fearful of the enemies that encircled them, they threw themselves resolutely into battle. Yet, despite the initial halting of a brutal Russian invasion, the Central Powers’ war plans soon unravelled. Germany’s attack on France failed. Austria-Hungary’s armies suffered catastrophic losses at Russian and Serbian hands. Hopes of a quick victory lay in ruins. For the Central Powers the war now became a siege on a monstrous scale. Britain’s ruthless intervention cut sea routes to central Europe and mobilised the world against them. Germany and Austria-Hungary were to be strangled of war supplies and food, their soldiers overwhelmed by better armed enemies, and their civilians brought to the brink of starvation. Conquest and plunder, land offensives, and submarine warfare all proved powerless to counter or break the blockade. The Central Powers were trapped in the Allies’ ever-tightening ring of steel.Alexander Watson’s compelling new history retells the war from the perspectives of its instigators and losers, the Germans and Austro-Hungarians. This is the story not just of their leaders in Berlin and Vienna, but above all of the people. Only through their unprecedented mobilisation could the conflict last so long and be so bitterly fought, and only with the waning of their commitment did it end. The war shattered their societies, destroyed their states and bequeathed to east-central Europe a poisonous legacy of unredeemed sacrifice, suffering, race hatred and violence. A major re-evaluation of the First World War, Ring of Steel is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the last century of European history.

The Rise and Fall of Austria or the Habsburg Empire / Österreich
The Rise and Fall of Austria or the Habsburg Empire / Österreich
Austria was ruled by the Habsburg dynasty from 1278/1282 to 1918. Therefore, historical Austria is also known as the Habsburg Empire or the Habsburg Monarchy. The Habsburgs made Austria a great power in 1477, when they inherited much of what is now the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Conchita Wurst (Tom Neuwirth) First Interview back in Vienna Austria after ESC 2014 German
Tom Neuwirth aka Conchita Wurst's first press conference interview (in German) after landing in Austria Vienna after winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 ESC in Copenhagen. The bearded lady got known on the Internet as "The Queen of Europe" or "The Queen of Austria" and scored one of the highest votes ever in ESC. This was Austria's first win in the competition since 1966 with "Merci, Chérie".
As an Austrian I think many Austrians feel humbled by the passionate support from so many countries and the amazing atmosphere in the hall! Thank you!!! So many exiting songs and countries!!! See you in Austria next year!
Also big respect for the composers of this song (Rise Like a Phoenix) and for the stunning performance and voice of course.

Vienna is the capital of Austria, in Central Europe. It is an ancient fortress city that lies nestled on the eastern fringe of the Alps, on the banks of the Danube River.
One hundred years ago, this glittering city gave birth to an artistic and cultural revolution. It was a revolution that changed the future and secured forever, Vienna’s place as one of the world’s great cities.
Free thinking flourished in its cafe’s and new ideas in music, and philosophy became embedded in its cobblestones.
