Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (German pronunciation: [ˈjoːhan ˈvɔlfɡaŋ fɔn ˈɡøːtə] ( listen), 28 August 1749 – 22 March 1832) was a German writer, pictorial artist, biologist, theoretical physicist, and polymath. He is considered the supreme genius of modern German literature. His works span the fields of poetry, drama, prose, philosophy, and science. His Faust has been called one of the greatest dramatic works of modern European literature. His other well-known literary works include his numerous poems, the Bildungsroman Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, and the epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther.
Goethe was one of the key figures of German literature and the movement of Weimar Classicism in the late 18th and early 19th centuries; this movement coincides with Enlightenment, Sentimentalism (Empfindsamkeit), Sturm und Drang and Romanticism. The author of the scientific text Theory of Colours, his influential ideas on plant and animal morphology and homology were extended and developed by 19th century naturalists including Charles Darwin. He also served at length as the Privy Councilor of the duchy of Saxe-Weimar.
Plot
Shad and Otho, two friends from the Ivory Coast, embark on a European adventure. They dream of returning home as benefactors or heroes. Otho is deported and returns to his country empty-handed. He becomes an outcast. Shad pursues his dream with Tango, a slightly strange white woman he meets in a supermarket. Their brotherly friendship gives them both wings. Otho tries to resist his fall, while Shad fights to keep going. A final dual brings the two friends together again: there's neither a winner nor a loser.
Plot
In 1999, the "Year of Goethe", a Hessian couple picks up a Bulgarian asylum seeker that looks like the poet. They found an event agency and market him as Goethe lookalike for fairs, vernissages and political convention. Unfortunately, the double can't even speak German.
Plot
Based on the novel by Thomas Mann. Charlotte Kestner, the love of Goethe's youth, became famous because she was the real-life Lotte represented in his renowned The Sorrows of Young Werther. At forty-four years of age she travels to Weimar to see Goethe again. The posturing of high society and Goethe's personal history lead her to an unexpected conclusion. Dramaturge (later Studio Director) Walter Janka was befriended by the Thomas Mann family, making this adaptation possible.

Plot
In the bourgeois circles of Europe after the Great War, can anything save the modern man? Harry Haller, a solitary intellectual, has all his life feared his dual nature of being human and being a beast. He's decided to die on his 50th birthday, which is soon. He's rescued from his solipsism by the mysterious Hermine, who takes him dancing, introduces him to jazz and to the beautiful and whimsical Maria, and guides him into the hallucinations of the Magic Theater, which seem to take him into Hell. Can humor, sin, and derision lead to salvation?

Hermine: O, Harry, you *are* an idiot!
Pablo: There is a light within. You need only to step out of your own shadows to see it.
Pablo: All humor is gallows humor.
[first lines]::Harry Haller: The day went by just as days go by. I killed it in accordance with my primitive and withdrawn way of life. I worked for an hour or two, had pains, took some opium and lay in a hot bath for two hours. Was glad when the pains consented to disappear. All in all it wasn't exactly a day of rapture. Perhaps the time is come to follow the example of Adalbert Stifter: a fatal accident while shaving...
Pablo: Learn what is to be taken seriously, and to laugh at the rest!
Goethe: Oh, no wonder you're so grouchy, if you're going to take Time seriously. There is no Time in Eternity. Only a moment. Just time for a joke!
Will you try to justify the meaning, of the note you sent
this evening, to my door your not deceiving me
I'd of thought that you'd have known me better, sending
round an unsigned letter, facing you would be much better
now.
Is it just that you can't face the future with me, can't
you tell me to my face
You just took the cowards way to say good-bye, how would
you feel here in my place?
If at last I think I'm glad, to rid myself of you I'm
sad, to think about the time I let you go
Then I turn and walk away, so please don't beg for me to
stay, cause I know just what I
will say to you
Is it just that you can't face the future with me, can't
you tell me to my face
You just took the cowards way to say good-bye, how would
you feel here in my place?
Tell me to my face your leaving now
Open up your heart, my pretty little shy one
Taste the tender sweetness that a loving kiss can bring
to you
Open up your heart my pretty little shy one
Let me show you all the livin' you been missin'
All there is to do.
I know that you are afraid of the world
Afraid of the things you see
In my arms your gonna be strong
As strong as love can make you be, so
Open up your heart my pretty little shy one
Just do like I say and let me love you all the way
Flat a mile on the stairs to his worth
A proud father leading the search
One mistake and a slip of the tongue and it
Slipped to the question
Face it out
Face it out
Come right through assault gun
But you better be right you better be right
This time I was hoping that you better be right
Back there where you live in a dream, your mindset becomes you
Fake fables are not all that they seem, mistrust within you
Can’t say you believe in all that
After the things that you saw in the past
No bolt will be colder the shoulder
I’m here don’t box me in
Face it out
Face it out
Come right through assault gun
But you better be right you better be right
This time I was hoping that you better be right
Come right through assault gun
But you better be right you better be right
This time I was hoping that you better be right
This is a declaration
Put my head in the sand
I feel it fill me in
Oh oh oh
I feel it fill me inn
Come right through assault gun
But you better be right you better be right
This time I was hoping that you better be right
Come right through assault gun
But you better be right you better be right
Ain't gonna lie
That's one thing
You and I could never see
So as we kiss goodbye
If I cry don't let these
Tears I shed today
Hold you back in any way
He's waiting for your smile so hurry
I'll be fine now don't you worry
Ain't gonna lie
If you say he's the guy
I won't stand in your way
Though it hurts me today
I'll get by
And I ain't gonna lie
Ain't gonna lie
Baby don't cry
Though my heart is breaking
I'm glad that you
Told the truth
Instead of some
Pack of lies
To us a lie's the only sin
At least we'll end the way we've been
By being truthful to each other
Girl I hope I find another
Ain't gonna lie
I'll be out by and by
Maybe I'll never meet
Anyone half as sweet
But I'll try
And I ain't gonna lie
To us a lie is the only sin
At least we'll end the way we've been
By being truthful to each other
Girl I hope I find another
Ain't gonna lie
Maybe I'll never meet
Anyone half as sweet
But I'll try
And I ain't gonna lie
I ain't gonna lie
