"His Excellency" Ban Ki-Moon, obergruppenfuhrer of that organization that hasn't met a dictator, failed state, or world pariah it didn't like. ================== The federal government is not considering sending Canadian fighter jets or special forces into Yemen, Libya or sub-Saharan Africa, the prime minister said Wednesday, amid questions about mission creep as Canada’s fight against Islamic State militants is set to expand. On Tuesday, the government put a motion before Parliament seeking a one-year extension of Canada’s contribution to the coalition airstrike mission against ISIS, and an expansion of the mission into Syria. Debate on the motion is set to begin Thursday, and the opposition parties have indicated they will not support it. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau asked Prime Minister Stephen Harper Wednesday about the language of the motion, suggesting it appears to leave the door open for battling militant groups other than ISIS, in countries other than Iraq and Syria. “Is the prime minister considering sending our bombers or special forces into Yemen or Libya or against Boko Haram in Sub-Saharan Africa?” Trudeau asked during question period. “The answer is no, we are not,” Harper responded. “Where we face an organization -- as we do today in Iraq and Syria -- that are establishing caliphates, large territorial areas from which they are threatening to launch terrorist attacks against this country, Canada will work with our allies in every single case where that occurs.” Earlier Wednesday, NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair said expanding the mission into Syria would mean Canada is helping Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, who is accused by the international community of committing atrocities against his own people. “I find it shameful that Canada should in any way, shape or form be putting our brave women and men in uniform at the beck and call of someone like Assad,” Mulcair told reporters as he left his weekly caucus meeting on Parliament Hill Wednesday morning. “Helping Assad is shameful and we should not be doing it.” Both Harper and Foreign Affairs Minister Rob Nicholson said Wednesday that because the United States has already made its legal case to the United Nations for bombing inside Syria, Canada is pursuing the mission expansion on the same legal basis as its allies. Nicholson did not directly answer questions about whether Canadian officials have spoken with their Syrian counterparts to alert them of the planned military engagement in their territory. Nicholson called the Assad regime “a state sponsor of terrorism,” but said Canada’s role in Syria is to combat ISIS only. Because Syria is “unwilling or unable to prevent (ISIS) from staging operations and conducting attacks” into Iraq, “we have a legal justification to degrade (ISIS),” Nicholson said. “Our fight is against (ISIS).” The motion before Parliament extends Canada’s mission to a “date not beyond March 30, 2016.” The motion notes that “continuing to degrade ISIL will require striking its operations and infrastructure where they are located, including in Syria.” There are four resolutions in the motion, including that the House “continues to support the Government's decision to contribute Canadian military assets to the fight against ISIL, and terrorists aligned with ISIL, including air strike capability with authorization to conduct airstrikes in Iraq and Syria.” Asked by reporters about this language, Nicholson did not explicitly rule out expanding Canada’s anti-ISIS mission to target other terror groups or to bomb countries other than Iraq and Syria. “The motion is very specific with respect to the extension of the mission for up to a year,” Nicholson told reporters. “We are going to continue with the operations in Iraq and as you know that has been extended into Syria. We have been very clear on that, that is what the motion is all about.”

Trudeau called on Harper to explain a remark one day earlier where he seemed to suggest Islam is "anti-women." "The prime minister made more alarming statements yesterday on the rights and freedoms of Canadians. Can he please explain to Canada's half a million Muslim women why he said their chosen faith is anti-women?" Trudeau said in question period. Harper shot back that it was Trudeau who owes Canadians an explanation, but uncharacteristically stumbled over his response. "These are not the views only of the overwhelming majority of Canadians, they are the views of the overwhelming majority of Muslims, moderate Muslims," Harper said. "It is up to the leader of the Liberal Party to explain why he is so far outside that mainstream view." On Tuesday, Harper suggested during a response regarding niqabs, coverings that veil most of a woman's face, that Islam is anti-woman. "Why would Canadians, contrary to our own values, embrace a practice at that time that is not transparent, that is not open and frankly is rooted in a culture that is anti-women?" Harper asked in question period. The debate has picked up speed since the government said it would challenge a Federal Court decision that overturned a ban on face coverings in citizenship ceremonies. The court said the ban interfered with a judge's "duty to allow candidates for citizenship the greatest possible freedom in the religious solemnization or the solemn affirmation of the oath." But as politicians debate two proposed anti-terrorism bills and deal with the fallout from the Oct. 22 shooting at the National War Memorial and on Parliament Hill, rhetoric regarding Islam has been increasingly heated. NDP Leader Tom Mulcair chastised Harper and Trudeau Wednesday, accusing them of using inflammatory language in the debate over whether a woman has the right to wear a niqab at a citizenship ceremony. "Mr. Harper specifically singles out mosques [in the debate]. That leads to Islamophobia and that's irresponsible," Mulcair said Wednesday on his way out of the NDP's weekly caucus meeting. "When he talks about a culture of 1.8 billion human beings as being anti-woman... that's very divisive and it's irresponsible, and it's undignified from a Canadian prime minister." Both opposition parties have criticized the government for stoking fear of Muslims for political reasons. They say the Conservatives aren't distinguishing between the overwhelming majority of Muslims, who disavow terrorism, and Islamic extremists. In the past few weeks, the Conservatives have sent out fundraising emails on the issue of face veils that mixed up the hijab, which generally covers only a woman's hair, and the niqab, and used an image by terror-group al-Shabaab to try to collect email addresses from supporters. Most recently, a mailout by Conservative MP Lawrence Toet asked recipients to return a survey after choosing whether they a) agree with him that more protection is needed or b) believe "terrorists are victims too."

Stephen Harper had a showdown with Vladimir Putin on Saturday, telling the Russian leader to "get out of Ukraine" in a dustup at the Group of 20 summit in Australia. Harper's spokesman, Jason MacDonald, said the prime minister was speaking to a group of G20 leaders at a private leaders' retreat on Saturday morning when Putin approached and extended his hand. MacDonald said Harper told Putin: "I guess I'll shake your hand but I have only one thing to say to you: You need to get out of Ukraine." According to MacDonald, Putin did not respond positively. He didn't provide further details. But a spokesman for the Russian delegation said Putin's response was: "That's impossible because we are not there." Harper and the leaders of the world's top economies began the annual summit in a tense atmosphere dominated by Western anger towards Putin and pressure to address climate change, fight Ebola and kickstart economic growth. A senior government source had earlier stated that Harper had no intention of talking to Putin during the summit, noting the Russian leader was well aware of Canada's position on his aggression in Ukraine. That changed when Putin approached his Canadian counterpart. The brilliant blue skies overhead this seaside city buzzed with security helicopters as the leaders, including Putin and U.S. President Barack Obama, arrived at the Queensland Parliament House in downtown Brisbane for the retreat.

"Not just because it is the right thing to do, but because history shows us, and the ideology of the anti-Israel mob tell us all too well, that those who threaten the existence of the Jewish people are in the longer term a threat to all of us." The prime minister acknowledged that his position is not popular with all governments and organizations, including members of the United Nations and the Francophonie. "And I know, by the way, because I have the bruises to show for it, that whether it is at the United Nations or any other international forum, the easiest thing to do is simply to just get along and go along with this anti-Israel rhetoric, to pretend it is just about being even-handed, and to excuse oneself with the label of honest broker. "There are, after all, a lot more votes—a lot more—in being anti-Israeli than in taking a stand. But as long as I am prime minister, whether it is at the United Nations, the Francophonie or anywhere else, Canada will take that stand, whatever the cost." The prime minister's use of the phrase "honest broker" is an apparent reference to a recent speech made by Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff. Ignatieff criticized the Harper government for using Israel as a wedge issue with his political opponents in Canada, at the expense of the country's influence on peace in the Middle East. The Liberal leader called for a return to a time when Canada was perceived to be an honest broker in the global community. Harper made his remarks at the start of a two-day conference on anti-Semitism that is being held on Parliament Hill during Holocaust Education Week.

OTTAWA - Justice Minister Peter MacKay said farewell to federal politics Friday, saying that, after 18 years as an MP, his young family would be the most important constituents in his life. “I love what I do. I love the opportunities it afforded me to help others. But, simply put, I love my family more,” an emotional MacKay said at a press conference in Stellarton, N.S., in the riding of Central Nova that he has represented since 1997. MacKay, 49, and his wife, human rights activist Nazanin Afshin-Jam, had a son in 2013 and are expecting their second child, a girl, this fall. Prime Minister Stephen Harper flew from Ottawa to Stellarton to praise MacKay, saying that MacKay deserves a place in Canada’s history books for having the courage as the last leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada to agree to a merger, in 2003, with the Canadian Alliance, then led by Harper. “Peter MacKay will be seen for what he is: a historic figure,” Harper said. “When we created the Conservative Party of Canada 12 years ago, there were two signatures on that agreement -- my own and Peter’s. That moment in October 2003 changed, without a shadow of a doubt, the course of Canadian politics. It took a sense of destiny, it took a spirit of humility and a willingness to compromise.” Ever since, the two men have had a close and warm relationship. MacKay served as Harper’s foreign affairs minister, defence minister and justice minister. “I hope that my record will show that I worked hard and that I did my best for the people of Nova Scotia and for my country,” MacKay said. MacKay’s decision not to seek re-election follows the decision by another party heavyweight, John Baird, to quit politics. International Development Minister Christian Paradis and Heritage Minister Shelly Glover have also announced they will not seek re-election.
