Berlin Philharmonic, conducted by the composer (1966). (WARNING: Video contains images of erotic art which might offend sensitive viewers). This was scored in 1955 for large orchestra, intended as Act 2 of an opera "King Stag" (Konig Hirsch). There were evidently some problems with the staging of the production, so Henze decided to rework the vocal parts of Act 2 into an orchestral texture where the vocals are replaced with solos from the orchestra, such as violin, viola, clarinet, oboe, trumpet, and other small groupings. The result is an unbroken span of strange and magical enchantment quite unique to Henze's style.
The basic motif is the story of King Stag who lives deep inside a forest. The forest has chased out all the intruders, leaving the stag alone and devoid of companionship. Although he has the body of a stag, he has the soul of a human, and so longs to go back to the cities and find human relationships. This creates conflict and an unresolved dilemma which he tries to discuss with the trees of the forest.
The unique style of the music lends itself to an erotic interpretation. I first purchased this recording way back in 1969 when I was still a teenager, and I was already enchanted by this strange music, and played it often. There is a strong sense of the Feminine Principle contrasted against elements of harsh sexual debauchery. Henze subsequently produced scores for several cinema art films which featured the passions of human sexuality. (There are some intensely sensual moments in his 7th symphony).
I offer here a copy of the CD re-release of my original LP for Henze fans to enjoy or discover. I have embellished the video with a generous sequence of mysterious pictures which are entirely my own subjective impressions in symbolic form. These must not be taken as any attempt to create a story board. But I suspect that the composer might have enjoyed my general direction.
((This upload replaces my eralier one of September 2013 which I viewed recently and felt inspired to improve the picture editing)).

In the nineteenth century on Cuba, “cimarrón” was a word used for an escaped slave. The “cimarrón” in Hans Werner Henze’s “Recital for four musicians,” Esteban Montejo, was born in 1860. In February 1970 Henze completed the score at his home in Marino, near Rome. Enzensberger had arranged the libretto into fifteen scenes, some of which reflect subjectively on historical events, other on the personal views of the Cimarrón. Henze had produced a score that included aleatoric components as well as composed “fields” in which pitches and sounds are specified but the tempi and dynamics are determined by the musicians, as well as passages for free improvisation. There are, however, also sections composed in the classic manner, such as the rather quiet, filigreed, and often enchantingly beautiful duets and solos, such as the guitar solo in the postlude to no. I, “The World,” or the flute solo in no. VIII, “Women”. The latter reflects on how the Cimarrón became anxious and afraid when meeting his lover, Ana, who he thought was a witch. At the beginning of no. VII, “The False Freedom,” the piccolo plays together with the vibraphone, supported by the tom-toms. The duet between the singer and guitar in no. XI, “The Rebellion,” includes one of the most beautiful unison passages in contemporary music. Among the delicately fully written out ensembles that depending on the chamber music qualities of the musicians’ performances include the toque a Babalu Ayé in no. V, “The Forest,” a reference to the Lukumi religion on Cuba, or no. VIII, “Women,” in the rhythm of a Cuban son. In no. XIII, “The Bad Victory,” another Cuban folk rhythm, a rumba, introduces the victorious frenzy that followed Cuban independence. The composer also used popular music in a parodistic manner: an habanera in no. II, “The Cimarrón,” alludes to the decadence of the colonial masters; in no. X, “The Priests,” the slightly out-of-tune chorales allude to the falseness of the clergy on Cuba, and in no. XIII, “The Bad Victory,” the harmonica tells the story of how the new members of the “master race” naively and matter-of-factly make themselves at home on the island. A variety of Caribbean and African instruments supplement the folkloristic aspects of the score, such as a Trinidad steel drum, which has its big entry in no. VII, “The False Freedom,” as well as marimbula, log drums, octobans, temple bells, congas, bongos, and other better-known instruments. Several instruments are reserved for specific dramatic effects, such as an iron chain that drops onto wood at one point (no. III, “Slavery”) and onto steel at another (no. IV, “Escape”), or the guiro that the singer in no. IX, “The Machines,” plays and thus becomes even more united with the relenting running of the modern machines in the factories. In no. IV, “Escape,” the flutist plays a Jew’s harp, enables
us to hear the stars the overseer sees when the Cimarrón hurls a rock in his face.
Henze took up certain models and signs from the vocabulary of modernism (e.g., the use of aleatoric procedures, the integration of improvised sections, free, no longer serial tonality, and the predominance of elements of Cuban folklore in the rhythm and shaping of the melodies). There is a narrative gesture that derives from Esteban Montejo’s speaking style, which was captured on tape. And there is the basso continuo, it was derived from and developed on ancient African (Congolese-Cuban) percussion music. That is the often quite but often loud pulse of our Cimarrón.

Hans Werner Henze, conductor

ABOUT 'EL CIMARRÓN'
...the Caribbean model of the fugitive is the runaway slave, the cimarrón... The adjective cimarrón, which was used to designate wild cattle, was applied first to the Indian and then to the Negro. - Antonio Ben¡tez-Rojo
My interest in El Cimarrón began during a conversation with Hans Magnus Enzensberger in about 1968, when we were discussing the difficulties of writing political songs which could go beyond or circumvent the achievements of Eisler, Weill and Dessau. At that time, the most likely solution to the problem seemed to me to be a cyclic form, from the rich possibilities of which, perhaps, something new would emerge. On this occasion Enzensberger told me about the Cuban publication of the autobiography of an old black, Esteban Montejo, who was living in Havana and had recalled his youth as a slave. Enzensberger suggested this subject for my experiment.
The preparations included making the personal acquaintance of Esteban Montejo, the Cimarrón himself. Miguel Barnet introduced me to him. I had never seen such an old man. He was then 107 years old, tall as a tree, walked slowly and upright, his eyes were lively, he radiated dignity and seemed well aware that he was a historical personage. I could barely understand his Creole; Barnet interpreted. He told stories of the cimarroneria, and his sexual life which must have ben unusually promiscuous. His speaking voice had that melodious quality that seems constantly about to break into song. Our visit lasted about two hours, during which time Esteban smoked one cigar after another. Then the dinner bell sounded and the veterans (of the Cuban war of independence) gathered in the dining room, while a single table was laid on the terrace for Esteban, who had not learned to eat in company. (I recognized some of the old men from the ICAIC film reconstruction of the battle of Mal Tiempo.)

Das Floß der Medusa, commissioned by the North Geman Radio, is Henze’s only oratorio. With a libretto by Ernst Schnabel, Das Floß was the earliest work in Henze’s decade of compositions to left-wing political causes. Dedicated to Ernesto “Che” Guevara, the revolutionary leader who was executed by the Bolivian government in October 1967, the work is subtitled oratorio volgare e militare, and was intended as a militant anti-establishment expression.
Based on a historical event, the secular oratorio relates the tragedy of the French frigate Medusa, which King Louis XVIII dispatched to Senegal to recapture French colonial territory from the English. The Medusa sailed under an incompetent captain who was a protégé of the king. They set sail on 17 June 1816. On 2 July, just thirty hours from its destination, the Medusa struck a reef and had to be abandoned. The captain, officers, priests, and other dignitaries filled the life boats and left the 154 crew members and passengers, including women and children, with few provisions and a crudely constructed raft. At first the raft was pulled by the life boats, but soon, to save the lifeboats, the towline was cut and the raft was left to drift. There followed thirteen days of horror for those on the raft. People died daily from exposure, hunger, thirst, exhaustion, and fighting over water and wine; some went mad, some commited suicide. Finally a passing ship rescued the fifteen survivors, but six of those died soon afterwards.
All of Europe was scandalized by the event. Théodore Géricault’s famous painting, Le radeau de la Méduse (1820), which hangs in the Louvre, memorializes the tragic event by representing the moment of rescue.
Schnabel’s libretto relies on German versions of the report and upon Géricault’s painting. It incorporates a few lines from Pascal’s Pensées (sung in German) and many lines from Dante’s Divine Comedy (sung in Italian). Part one, “Embarkation for disaster”, tells the story as far as cutting of the towline. Part two, “The ninth night and the morning”, continues to the point of the rescue. There are two singing roles. One is Jean-Charles, baritone, who represents the mulatto in Gericault’s painting. The second role is that of La Mort, a high soprano. The narrative is told in past tense by a speaker. He is symbolically called Charon, after the boatman of Greek mythology who ferried the dead across the river Styx to Hades. The choral music is sung by a Chorus of the Living, a Chorus of the Dying, a Chrous of the Dead, and a Chorus of Children.
