Air Crash Investigation 2015: BOAC Flight 781 DeHavilland Comet 'Mid Air Explosion'
On Sunday 10 January 1954, British Overseas Airways Corporation Flight 781, a de Havilland DH.106 Comet 1, registered G-ALYP,[1] took off from Ciampino Airport in Rome, Italy, en route to Heathrow Airport in London, England, on the final leg of its flight from Singapore. At about 10:51 GMT, the aircraft suffered an explosive decompression at altitude and crashed into the Mediterranean Sea, killing everyone on board. The accident aircraft was the third Comet built.[2]
Gerry Bull, a former BOAC engineer, said that when he inspected the aircraft in Rome he looked for "incidental damage". He did not find any, so he believed Flight 781 was fit for flight. Bull and the same team of engineers later examined South African Airways Flight 201 before its final flight.[3]
On 10 January 1954, the flight took off at 09:34 GMT for the final-stage flight to London. At about 09:50 GMT BOAC Argonaut, G-ALHJ piloted by Captain Johnson, which was flying the same route at a lower altitude was in contact with Captain Gibson. During a radio communication about weather conditions, the conversation was abruptly cut off. The last words heard from Captain Gibson were "George How Jig, did you get my -". Soon afterwards wreckage was seen falling into the sea by fishermen.
Heathrow Airport initially listed Flight 781 as being delayed; around 1:30 PM the airport took the flight off the arrivals board.[3]
There is speculation that it was shot down? Was it?

Heathrow Airport initially listed Flight 781 as being delayed; around 1:30 PM the airport took the flight off the arrivals board.
Official findings concerning BOAC Flight 781 and South African Airways Flight 201 were released jointly on 1 February 1955, in Civil Aircraft Accident Report of the Court of Inquiry into the Accidents to Comet G-ALYP on 10 January 1954 and Comet G-ALYY on 8 April 1954. After the equivalent of 3,000 flights simulated with G-ALYU, investigators at the RAE were able to conclude that the crash of G-ALYP had been due to failure of the pressure cabin at the forward ADF window in the roof. This window was one of two apertures for the aerials of an electronic navigation system in which opaque fiberglass panels took the place of the window glass. The failure was a result of metal fatigue caused by the repeated pressurization and de-pressurization of the aircraft cabin. Another fact was that the supports around the windows were riveted, not glued, as the original specifications for the aircraft had called for. The problem was exacerbated by the punch rivet construction technique employed. Unlike drill riveting, the imperfect nature of the hole created by punch riveting caused manufacturing defect cracks, which may have caused fatigue cracks to start around the rivet. The investigators examined the final piece of wreckage with a microscope.

The Geoffrey de Havilland Story is a drama documentary by commercial and display pilot Steve Bohill-Smith and award winning BAFTA nominated “Director of photography" Ashley Rowe BSC.
The home made flying machine had just been rolled out of a shed in a field on the Highclere estate in Hampshire. It was the winter of 1909. After a few adjustments to the Iris engine ( his own design) all seemed to be running well. Over the preceding few weeks a number of short taxi trials had been made down the slope and the machine had been found to keep surprisingly straight. Nerves were becoming strained as the nights were closing in and the weather was invariably unfavourable, the wind often blowing in the wrong direction to attempt a first take off. Geoffrey de Havilland had not flown or even seen another aeroplane at close quarters before.
You can see the result of the first flight attempt in this drama documentary “The Geoffrey de Havilland Story”. Five years in the making it covers Geoffrey’s early years in Nuneaton, the family move to Crux Easton, his discovery of engineering and aviation and his desire to fly. The words determination, courage and persistence spring to mind. Geoffrey de Havilland was a true aviation pioneer and was responsible for the design of many important aircraft, from the Be2 biplanes of WW1 to the DH Mosquito fighter bomber of WW2, to the first jet fighters post war to the first long range jet airliner the DH Comet. He created one of the largest aviation companies in the world which was always at the leading edge of technology. He was Knighted in 1944.

wn.com/The Geoffrey De Havilland Story (2015) Trailer

This is a video of the deHavilland beaver plane crash at Lake Hood in Anchorage AK, on June 7, 2009. My father and I were videotaping planes at Lake Hood taking off and landing when the wind kicked up and sent the Beaver taking off right at us.
The wing was less than 5 feet over our heads, and the radial engine was less than 8 feet to my left. No exaggeration!! The Slow motion at the end gives a little better look at how close it was. Everyone onboard was in pristine condition, 2 adults, 2 children and 2 dogs
For those wondering what camcorder I use it is a Canon VIXIA HF20

The de Havilland Mosquito was an outstanding warplane on every account. Although it was overshadowed in popular fame by the Spitfire, it was certainly most popular with the pilots who flew them.
This aeroplane could carry large loads over long distances, exceeding its specifications laid down by its designers.
This film shows the story of the aircraft type from its design and production to its performance in World War Two.

This documentary tells the story of a Mossie through archival footage and interviews with veteran pilots. We follow the incredible process of restoring a plane that hasn't flown in more than 50 years. And, we’ll take to the skies with the world’s only known flying original Mosquito.
The Mosquito achieved legendary status in 1940, when it first took flight. Manoeuvrable, light, built of wood and the fastest aircraft on the planet. History tells us that the Mosquito was a crucial element in the victory of the Allied Forces in World War II. But because of its wooden construction nearly all of them have decayed away and it’s now one of the rarest planes in the world.
In 2009, an amazing and dedicated team was assembled and charged with the monumental task of fully restoring an original de Havilland Mosquito to flying condition. And that’s where our story begins.

Recently TheHDAviation hit a major milestone, 1,000,000 views! Here is a very special compilation to say thank you :-D
This video features numerous scenes of the Royal Canadian Air Force de Havilland Canada DHC-5 Buffalo CC-115. In this compilation you can see numerous awesome STOL takeoffs and landings as well as some parachute drops and some paratroopers in flight! You can also see and hear the engines start up and some vortices. The CC-115 is one of the largest, and most impressive planes that visits Nelson (CZNL) and I am very glad I have had the opportunity to view it quite a few times.
I hope you all enjoy this compilation and thanks for supporting my channel along the way!

The majority of DH.4s were actually built as general purpose two-seaters in the United States, for service with the American forces in France.
The DH.4 was tried with several engines, of which the best was the 375 hp (280 kW) Rolls-Royce Eagle engine. Armament and ordnance for the aircraft consisted of one 0.303 in (7.7 mm) Vickers machine gun for the pilot and one 0.303 in (7.7 mm) Lewis gun on a Scarff ring mounting for the observer. Two 230 lb (100 kg) bombs or four 112 lb (51 kg) bombs could be carried. The DH.4 entered service on 6 March 1917 with No. 55 Squadron in France.

Sensation Voltige fun with clouds in a Stampe SV4.
Jean Stampe flew with the Belgian Flying Corps during the First World War, and during this time he met Maurice Vertongen. Together they set up the Stampe and Vertongen Company at Antwerp-Deurne in 1923, becoming one of the largest flying schools in Belgium and possessing maintenance and ferrying contracts for the Belgian Air Force.
Georges Ivanoff was a designer working for Stampe and Vertongen, and at the request of Jean Stampe, designed a trainer biplane which enabled better access to the front seat, with the top centre section moved forward. This idea followed the designs of Geoffrey De Havilland's DH82, which had swept back wings to compensate for the forward centre of gravity position. The first of Ivanoff's design had only the top wings swept back, and, powered by a Gipsy Major 2 engine, was designated the SV4, and registered OO-ANI.
The SV4 first flew on 17th May 1933, with Jean Stampe at the controls. The company manufactured six SV4 trainers for use in its flying school. Production ceased in 1935 after the death of his son Leon Stampe, but two more SV4s were manufactured in 1937 having been redesigned by Demidoff with two extra ailerons, and with a changed tail section.
Two more SV4s, OO-ATC and OO-ATD, were built in 1939 to enter a competition to find a new trainer for the Belgian Air Force. This time Demidoff once more redesigned the tailplane and swept both wings back. OO-ATD won the competition and was sold to Baron Thierry d'Huart.
On 4th July 1941 this aircraft was flown to England from the grounds of Chateau Ter-Block when occupied by German Forces, by two Belgian Air Force pilots, Michael Donnet and Leon Divoy. An account of this adventure can be found in Donnet's book "Flight to Freedom", published by Ian Allen. (see "Stampe Books" on the left side scroll bar)
In1939 the Belgian Government ordered 300 SV4s, and production was set up in Antwerp and at the Farman company in France under licence. The Antwerp factory had completed production of the first batch of 30, just three days after the Germans invaded Belgium on 10th May 1940. France had also ordered 600 machines, 10 of which were also completed at the Antwerp factory, with the Renault 4PEI engine. The only SV4 which survived World War 2 was OO-ATD.
Postwar, Belgium and France were in need of trainers to recreate their Air Forces, and the SV4 was a logical choice considering the lack of available alloys. The state run SNCAN manufactured 701 SV4s, nearly all having the Renault 4P engine, between 1945 and 1949.
In 1947, a contract for a further 150 aircraft was given to the Algerian Atelier Industriel de L'air, and were serial numbered 1001 to 1150. These aircraft are said to be of superior quality having been made from better alloys and high grade spruce and ash, as opposed to SNCAN where Jean Stampe was known to be unhappy with production quality.
In 1947 Jean Stampe met up again with Alfred Renard who had been with the company until 1930. Together they set up the Stampe and Renard Company in Antwerp and produced 65 SV4b aircraft with the Gipsy Major 10 engine, for the Belgian Air Force.
France created the Societe de la Formation Aeronautique with 500 Stampes spread amongst aero clubs and National Flying Centres. The SV4 was the mainstay of aerobatic competitions until the 1960s, when the performance of Pitts Specials and other aircraft left the Stampe SV4 behind.
Sensation Voltige ASBL is owning 2 vintage aircraft giving you the opportunity of discovering or enjoying the art of flying. The foundation was the result of the craze of a few line pilots for biplanes and stunt flying.
There is a vast choice of almost unlimited possibilities. The most classical however are: First flights, first aerobatic flights, formation flying, air events, air displays
We want to emphasize the fact that Sensation Voltige is the only one offering you such a wide range of possibilities, from the most discreet to the at most daring ones.

When the Mosquito began production in 1941, it was one of the fastest operational aircraft in the world. Entering widespread service in 1942, the Mosquito was a high-speed, high-altitude photo-reconnaissance aircraft, continuing in this role throughout the war. From mid-1942 to mid-1943 Mosquito bombers flew high-speed, medium or low-altitude missions against factories, railways and other pinpoint targets in Germany and German-occupied Europe. From late 1943, Mosquito bombers were formed into the Light Night Strike Force and used as pathfinders for RAF Bomber Command's heavy-bomber raids. They were also used as "nuisance" bombers, often dropping Blockbuster bombs - 4,000 lb (1,812 kg) "cookies" - in high-altitude, high-speed raids that German night fighters were almost powerless to intercept.

Form follows function. Good construction follows good design, and good design is concerned with both aesthetics and utility. This film puts forward the hypothesis that an article aimed at utility, designed in accordance with technical accuracy, without conscious concern for its effect upon the senses, is artistically satisfying and structurally sound.
This film illustrates how the industrial designers approach the task at hand. First they are careful to ascertain the exact purpose for which the product is intended, only then can they proceed with the actual design. The thesis is that good things come about by design, not by accident. Made by The National Film Board 1950. Directed by Geoffrey Collings.

Premieres 9pm, Thursday 10 March on Freesat 160, Virgin Media 267 and Sky 534
April Butler’s documentary celebrates an aircraft that played a vital role in WWII and follows a team of enthusiasts as they restore one.
The de Havilland Mosquito first took to the skies in 1940 and entered widespread service in the RAF less than two years later. Manoeuvrable and light, the Mossie, as it became affectionately known, was one of the fastest planes in the world. The Mosquito was capable of operating in a number of roles, including night fighter, high-altitude bomber and even reconnaissance. The aircraft made important contributions to both the defence of Britain and the invasion of Germany. Being almost entirely built from wood, the plane was relatively light, making it not only faster than its competitors but also able to reach higher altitudes. Unfortunately, its wooden construction was not conducive to longevity, and almost every Mosquito has fallen into decay. In this film, however, a dedicated team undertake the task of restoring a Mosquito to airworthiness. Cameras record a piece of aviation history as the plane takes to the sky for the first time in half a century. Archive footage and interviews with veteran pilots combine to tell the story of one of the most successful aircraft to bear RAF roundels.

The de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito is a British multi-role combat aircraft with a two-man crew that served during and after the Second World War. It was one of few operational front-line aircraft of the era constructed almost entirely of wood and was nicknamed "The Wooden Wonder".The Mosquito was also known affectionately as the "Mossie" to its crews.[5] Originally conceived as an unarmed fast bomber, the Mosquito was adapted to roles including low to medium-altitude daytime tactical bomber, high-altitude night bomber, pathfinder, day or night fighter, fighter-bomber, intruder, maritime strike aircraft, and fast photo-reconnaissance aircraft. It was also used by the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) as a fast transport to carry small high-value cargoes to, and from, neutral countries, through enemy-controlled airspace.A single passenger could be carried in the aircraft's bomb bay, which was adapted for the purpose. When production of the Mosquito began in 1941, it was one of the fastest operational aircraft in the world.Entering widespread service in 1942, the Mosquito was a high-speed, high-altitude photo-reconnaissance aircraft, continuing in this role throughout the war. From mid-1942 to mid-1943, Mosquito bombers flew high-speed, medium or low-altitude missions against factories, railways and other pinpoint targets in Germany and German-occupied Europe. From late 1943, Mosquito bombers were formed into the Light Night Strike Force and used as pathfinders for RAF Bomber Command's heavy-bomber raids. They were also used as "nuisance" bombers, often dropping Blockbuster bombs – 4,000 lb (1,812 kg) "cookies" – in high-altitude, high-speed raids that German night fighters were almost powerless to intercept.
As a night fighter from mid-1942, the Mosquito intercepted Luftwaffe raids on the United Kingdom, notably defeating Operation Steinbock in 1944. Starting in July 1942, Mosquito night-fighter units raided Luftwaffe airfields. As part of 100 Group, it was a night fighter and intruder supporting RAF Bomber Command's heavy bombers and reduced bomber losses during 1944 and 1945.As a fighter-bomber in the Second Tactical Air Force, the Mosquito took part in "special raids", such as the attack on Amiens Prison in early 1944, and in precision attacks against Gestapo or German intelligence and security forces. Second Tactical Air Force Mosquito supported the British Army during the 1944 Normandy Campaign. From 1943, Mosquitos with RAF Coastal Command strike squadrons attacked Kriegsmarine U-boats (particularly in 1943 in the Bay of Biscay, where significant numbers were sunk or damaged) and intercepting transport ship concentrations.
The Mosquito flew with the Royal Air Force (RAF) and other air forces in the European, Mediterranean and Italian theatres. The Mosquito was also operated by the RAF in the South East Asian theatre, and by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) based in the Halmaheras and Borneo during the Pacific War. During the 1950s, the RAF ultimately replaced the Mosquito with the jet-powered English Electric Canberra.

Mayday Air Crash Investigation: BOAC Flight 781 DeHavilland Comet 'Mid Air Explosion'
There is speculation that it was shot down? Was it?
On Sunday 10 January 1954, British Overseas Airways Corporation Flight 781, a de Havilland DH.106 Comet 1 registered G-ALYP, took off from Ciampino Airport in Rome, Italy, en route to Heathrow Airport in London, England, on the final leg of its flight from Singapore. At about 10:51 GMT, the aircraft suffered an explosive decompression at altitude and crashed into the Mediterranean Sea, killing everyone on board. The accident aircraft G-ALYP was the third Comet built.
Gerry Bull, a former BOAC engineer, said that when he inspected the aircraft in Rome he looked for "incidental damage". He did not find any, so he believed Flight 781 was fit for flight. Bull and the same team of engineers later examined South African Airways Flight 201 before its final flight.
The last words heard from Captain Gibson were "George How Jig, did you get my ...". Soon afterwards wreckage was seen falling into the sea by fishermen.

This is wonderful story titled, "The First Jetliner" produced in 1990 by Chicago's Public Television station, WTTW. It's about the De Havilland Comet jet airliner and the major impact it had on the postwar airline industry. This TV program not only presents the complete story of the Comet, but also discusses the airliners that would compete against it such as the little known, Canadian built, Avro C. 102 Jetliner and the much better known jet airliners, the American built Boeing 707 and the Douglas DC-8. Comments by people who were instrumental in the making of the Comet are included such as Comet project engineer, David Newman and Comet test pilot, John Cunningham. There's also a short segment where Boeing 707 test pilot Tex Johnston discusses his famous barrel roll maneuver over the Seattle area to impress numerous airline officials on the ground who were looking into possibly purchasing the 707. Finally, the program looks at a group of people, many of them members of the O'Hare Rotary Club, who were dismantling a former Mexicana De Havilland Comet that had sat for years in derelict condition on the northeast side of Chicago's O'Hare Field. Their goal was to save the aircraft for eventual display at the National Air & Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution at Washington D.C. (sadly, after this program originally aired, that Comet would eventually be scrapped). My apologies regarding the first few seconds missing from this television program. Anyway, hope you enjoy this historic bit of aviation and airline history. Happy Landings!

Public domain film, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

The de Havilland Canada DHC-4 Caribou (designated by the United States military as the CV-2 and later C-7 Caribou) is a Canadian-designed and produced specialized cargo aircraft with short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability. The Caribou was first flown in 1958 and although mainly retired from military operations, is still in use in small numbers as a rugged "bush" aircraft.
Design and development
The de Havilland Canada company's third STOL design was a big step up in size compared to its earlier DHC Beaver and DHC Otter, and was the first DHC design powered by two engines. The Caribou, however, was similar in concept in that it was designed as a rugged STOL utility. The Caribou was primarily a military tactical transport that in commercial service found itself a small niche in cargo hauling. The United States Army ordered 173 in 1959 and took delivery in 1961 under the designation AC-1, which was changed to CV-2 Caribou in 1962.
The majority of Caribou production was destined for military operators, but the type's ruggedness and excellent STOL capabilities requiring runway lengths of only 1200 feet (365 metres) also appealed to some commercial users. US certification was awarded on 23 December 1960. Ansett-MAL, which operated a single example in the New Guinea highlands, and AMOCO Ecuador were early customers, as was Air America, (a CIA front in South East Asia during the Vietnam War era for covert operations). Other civil Caribou aircraft entered commercial service after being retired from their military users.
Today only a handful are in civil use.
Operational history
In response to a US Army requirement for a tactical airlifter to supply the battlefront with troops and supplies and evacuate casualties on the return journey, de Havilland Canada designed the DHC-4. With assistance from Canada's Department of Defence Production, DHC built a prototype demonstrator that flew for the first time on 30 July 1958.
Impressed with the DHC4's STOL capabilities and potential, the US Army ordered five for evaluation as YAC-1s and went on to become the largest Caribou operator. The AC-1 designation was changed in 1962 to CV-2, and then C-7 when the US Army's CV-2s were transferred to the US Air Force in 1967. US and Australian Caribous saw extensive service during the Vietnam War.
The U.S. Army purchased 159 of the aircraft and they served their purpose well as a tactical transport during the Vietnam War, where larger cargo aircraft such as the Fairchild C-123 Provider and the Lockheed C-130 Hercules could not land on the shorter landing strips. The aircraft could carry 32 troops or two Jeeps or similar light vehicles. The rear loading ramp could also be used for parachute dropping.
Under the Johnson-McConnell agreement of 1966, the Army relinquished the fixed wing Caribou to the United States Air Force in exchange for an end to restrictions on Army rotary wing operations...

This Flight of the Aer Lingus Dragon IOLAR (Eagle) was a Check Flight for Capt O,Shea by Capt JJ Sullivan.
Capt JJ flew the DH 84 from Dublin International Airport to the grass strip Airfield in Trim near Dublin.
Thia plane is in Friedrichshafen Museum ausgestellt 2013
There Capt O,Shea performed a number of Touch and Go procedures and finaly, after collecting me and my camera, navigated the Twin passenger plane back to Dublin International Airport.
It was an experiance for me I will not forget.
By the way, the IOLAR flew over Dublin city yesterday, 12 years after this video was taken!
