Topic: To Lose Without Fighting? The US, China, Southeast Asia and the South China Sea
How long can the United States remain a ‘resident power in Asia' in the face of China’s rise? Are Southeast Asian countries destined to become satellite states of Beijing? It’s increasingly fashionable to assume that China will inevitably eject the United States from Asia - starting in the South China Sea. But how plausible is this narrative? Bill Hayton will take a sceptical view but argue that, if it takes hold, it could become a self-fulfilling prophecy - the US and Southeast Asia would lose without

Disaster and Democracy in Southeast Asia
Disaster and Democracy in Southeast Asia
Disaster and Democracy in Southeast Asia
October 23, 2010 - Stanford professor Don Emmerson discusses the concept of democracy and how it has fared in Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand and Indonesia. The transition from dictatorship to democracy in these countries has taken very different paths and reveals many things about government in that part of the world.
This talk was presented as part of the Classes Without Quizzes series at Stanford's 2010 Reunion Homecoming.

There are fewer regions in the world more traveled today by backpackers than Southeast Asia. However, deciding where to go and what to do over such an expansive territory can be a daunting task. Hence, this guide. The following 10 things to do in SE Asia is an attractions travel guide that highlights the best of the best in the region:
1) Visit Temples
No trip to SE Asia - and Cambodia for that matter - should be taken without firmly penciling in a visit to Angkor Wat. Built to honor Hindu God Vishnu, Angkor Wat is the largest religious complex in the world.
2) Island Hop
Few islands in SE Asia can offer as much as Bali, Indonesia. Paradise for beach dwellers? Check. Into surfing? Check. Culture vulture? Ubud will surely tickle your fancy. Backpacker? Kuta beach is calling. Feel like climbing an active volcano? Mount Batur is calling your name. Love monkeys? Try to avoid getting bitten at Ubud Monkey Forest.
3) Volunteer
If you're seeking a place to volunteer that supports a great cause, look no further than Elephant Nature Park. Nestled nearby Chiang Mai, this elephant sanctuary and rescue center protects elephants from abuse in stark contrast with the Thai government which turns a blind eye.
4) Linger for a while in Cultural Hubs
Luang Prabang is a cultural hub in northern Laos that is a little slice of paradise. A charming city oozing with character it is different from other cities in Southeast Asia in the sense that is not overcrowded. Whether you go shopping, explore the rural countryside or enjoy riverside dining you'll surely remember your time here fondly. I highly recommend taking a cooking class.
5) Marvel at modern architecture
When you first lay your eyes upon the Petronas Towers it is like being in front of a futuristic space towers. These amazing towers are the main landmark of Kuala Lumpur and are easily the most impressive towers in SE Asia.
6) Indulge in Street Food
I can't think of a single nation in SE Asia where you can't devour amazing street food. In our travel video guide we showcase the Saturday Night Market in Chaing Mai where you can eat Thai and International street food delights without shelling out too much Baht.
7) Explore a Mega Alpha City
There are many mega cities in SE Asia worth exploring from Kuala Lumpur to Saigon and Bangkok to Hanoi; however, no city in Southeast really compares with Singapore. Clean. Impossibly sterile. Maybe to some; however it is a beacon of light in terms of development and prosperity with many impressive attractions and landmarks.
8) Get off the beaten track
When possible try to visit some smaller gems. Although the road from Chiang Mai to Pai is as serpentine as you'll ever experience, the rewards once arriving are plentiful. Stunning scenery and a slower pace of life await you. Swing on a hammock to your heart's content.
9) Boat Trip
Choosing either a two or three day Ha Long Bay boat cruise is one of the top things I recommend to do while traveling in Vietnam. Stunning Karsts, adventure sports (kayaking) and plenty of relaxing are what keep tourists coming in droves.
10) Go Hiking and visit Hill Tribes
Sapa, Vietnam is one of your best bets in SE Asia for adventure hiking. You can go on two or three day adventures where you'll be treated to breathtaking scenery, rice terraces, rural life and plenty of hospitality.
This is part of our Travel in Southeast Asia series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Asian culture, Asian arts, Asian foods, Asian religion and Asian people.

Travel video about destination South East Asia.
South East Asia is a fascinating, atmospheric and exotic world full of unspoiled nature and cultural treasures and a region in which both past and present live side by side and unite in a wonderful way. Myanmar, The Land Of Golden Pagodas: for decades the rulers of what was once known as Burma closed the country’s doors to the outside world and many of its fine religious sanctuaries were badly neglected but they have now gradually been given the respect that they deserve. Inlay Lake is home to the Inthas, one of the many tribes that came to Myanmar from various of South East Asia’s neighbouring countries. Throughout the area are the floating plantations of the Inthas on which tomatoes, cucumbers and beans are cultivated. A journey on the Shan State Express provides passengers with a fascinating insight into the life of the Shan people whose lives are dominated by agriculture. The north west of Myanmar is known for its many splendid sacred buildings such as Mingun’s Hsinbyume Pagoda that was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It was constructed according to the architectural rules of Hindu Buddhist cosmology and symbolizes the World Mountain of Meru.. One of Taiwan’s most important centres of arts and crafts is located in the west of the island, Lukang, an ancient and idyllic town full of age-old traditions whose large number of beautiful temples is most impressive. In Cambodia and around forty kilometres north of Phnom Penh is the former capital city of Udong. Today only the remains of the city’s former splendid buildings indicate that it was the last centre of Angkor’s power with hundreds of dwellings and temples. The ruins of Ayutthaya indicate the impressive dimensions of the former capital of ancient Thailand and one of the mightiest royal cities in South East Asia.

Global Education Dialogues: South Asia Series - May 2015
Renewed activity has again begun to appear across the Pacific, extending across the North American Craton.
A new article is circulating in the Main Stream Media regarind a "mega-quake" which could strike the Pacific Northwest Cascadia subduction zone. Fearmongering talk by the media saying Seattle will be destroyed, and everything West of I-5 from Washington to California would be destroyed.
http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/07/20/the-really-big-one
Some media even saying PEOPLE SHOULD MOVE from the West coast (smh + facepalm)!
https://www.facebook.com/ShepardSmith/videos/vb.131010790489/10153367050185490/?type=2&theater;
Move? Huh? Wow, really? Over reaction beyond measure.. instead of moving.. have an earthquake plan, and know what to do in low lying areas near the ocean!
http://www.dutchsinse.com
These reports (in my opinion) is highly fear laced, and should be decried for being alarmist in the outlandish media suppositions.
People talking about 100-600 foot tall waves, and M9.2 earthquakes along the Cascadia which will devastate the West coast?
While this is a remote possibility, we have a much greater chances of 6.0 - 8.0M earthquakes in the region which will NOT send giant waves to shore, but will cause water / food / power shortages.
______
We have a current forecast threat for 6.0M earthquake activity over the next 7 days to strike between North California and the Axial seamount off the shores of Washington State.
Also on watch, the far SW United States reaching into Baja Mexico -- watching for 4.0M to 5.0M activity over the next 7 days.
New 4.0M movement should begin again at the Oklahoma / Kansas fracking operations.
New 3.0M to 4.0M activity should hit the Southern United States again near Mississippi / Alabama.
New 3.0M to 4.0M activity should hit the far Northeast United States (Southeast Canada) near the Quebec border.
New 4.0M activity should strike at multiple volcanic locations in California, Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, and Utah.
Each location should see a small swarm which makes it stand out compared to single earthquake events elsewhere.
In the West Pacific, watch Central Japan along the Izu Trench, Southward to Okinawa. Watch Fiji to Soloman Island as well.. both areas should see renewed mid 6.0M range earthquakes.
Watch also for new deep earthquakes which could add larger earthquakes into the mix. Currently still just 1 deep earthquake in the past 7 days (as of July 17, 2015 1130am CDT).
Watch the Eastern India border for at least 1 5.0M event, could lead upwards of 6.0M .
Watch West of India at the Afghanistan Tajikistan border for at least one (most likely a swarm) of moderate to large earthquakes (West of Kathmandu).
Europe, Greece should see renewed mid M5.0 to low M6.0 activity.. English Channel should see at least one M3.0 to M4.0 event.. may be along the shores of France instead of the Channel, or could be just a bit North near London.
Central and South America -- be on watch for new developments near the border of Chile + Peru... could be a single larger event in the upper 6.0 range.
All of this should occur in the next 7-9 days from today (7/17/2015). Giving an additional 2 day window in case we see more deep earthquakes in the West Pacific.

The primeval forests support a fauna like something out of a fairy tale, with elephants, tigers, leopards, and some of the rarest animal species on the planet. Species never seen by humans are discovered at regular intervals. In recent decades, the few large mammals to be described for the first time were all found in Indochina and experts assume that most of them are at home in Laos: wild oxen such as the saola and kuprey or the truong son munjak. No outsider has ever seen a living specimen of the latter; its existence is only known indirectly, through skeletons, horns and bag that are occasionally found in remote villages. And there is the Mekong, one of the last untamed rivers on Earth. Fed by hundreds of tributaries, it is one of the richest freshwater systems on the planet, comparable only with the Congo or Amazon. This is where the Mekong catfish lives. At 3 meters long and weighing in at 300 kilograms, this monster must be the largest freshwater fish on earth.

Swami Vivekananda in Kashmir in 1898.
In the first half of the 1st millennium, the Kashmir region became an important centre of Hinduism and later of Buddhism; later still, in the ninth century, Kashmir Shaivism arose.[1] In 1349, Shah Mir became the first Muslim ruler of Kashmir, inaugurating the Salatin-i-Kashmir or Swati dynasty.[2] For the next five centuries, Muslim monarchs ruled Kashmir, including the Mughals, who ruled from 1526 until 1751, and the Afghan Durrani Empire, which ruled from 1747 until 1820.[2] That year, the Sikhs, under Ranjit Singh, annexed Kashmir.[2] In 1846, after the Sikh defeat in the First Anglo-Sikh War, and upon the purchase of the region from the British under the Treaty of Amritsar, the Raja of Jammu, Gulab Singh, became the new ruler of Kashmir. The rule of his descendants, under the paramountcy (or tutelage) of the British Crown, lasted until 1947, when the former princely state of British India became a disputed territory, now administered by three countries: India, Pakistan, and the People's
In medieaval times, Kashmir has been an important centre for the development of a Buddhist-Hinduist syncretism, in which Madhyamaka and Yogara were blenden with Saivism and Advaita Vedanta.
The Buddhist Mauryan emperor Ashoka is often credited with having founded the old capital of Kashmir, Shrinagari, now ruins on the outskirts of modern Srinagar. Kashmir was long to be a stronghold of Buddhism.[4]
As a Buddhist seat of learning, the Sarvāstivādan school strongly influenced Kashmir.[5] East and Central Asian Buddhist monks are recorded as having visited the kingdom. In the late 4th century CE, the famous Kuchanese monk Kumārajīva, born to an Indian noble family, studied Dīrghāgama and Madhyāgama in Kashmir under Bandhudatta. He later became a prolific translator who helped take Buddhism to China. His mother Jīva is thought to have retired to Kashmir. Vimalākṣa, a Sarvāstivādan Buddhist monk, travelled from Kashmir to Kucha and there instructed Kumārajīva in the Vinayapiṭaka.
According to tradition, Adi Shankara visited the pre-existing Sarvajñapīṭha (Sharada Peeth) in Kashmir in late 8th century or early 9th century CE. The Madhaviya Shankaravijayam states this temple had four doors for scholars from the four cardinal directions. The southern door (representing South India) had never been opened, indicating that no scholar from South India had entered the Sarvajna Pitha. According to tradition, Adi Shankara opened the southern door by defeating in debate all the scholars there in all the various scholastic disciplines such as Mimamsa, Vedanta and other branches of Hindu philosophy; he ascended the throne of Transcendent wisdom of that temple
In 1845, the First Anglo-Sikh War broke out. According to the Imperial Gazetteer of India,
"Gulab Singh contrived to hold himself aloof till the battle of Sobraon (1846), when he appeared as a useful mediator and the trusted adviser of Sir Henry Lawrence. Two treaties were concluded. By the first the State of Lahore (i.e. West Punjab) handed over to the British, as equivalent for one crore indemnity, the hill countries between the rivers Beas and Indus; by the second the British made over to Gulab Singh for 7.5 million all the hilly or mountainous country situated to the east of the Indus and the west of the Ravi (i.e. the Vale of Kashmir)."[22]
Drafted by a treaty and a bill of sale, and constituted between 1820 and 1858, the Princely State of Kashmir and Jammu (as it was first called) combined disparate regions, religions, and ethnicities:[26] to the east, Ladakh was ethnically and culturally Tibetan and its inhabitants practised Buddhism; to the south, Jammu had a mixed population of Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs; in the heavily populated central Kashmir valley

A group of Hindu women performing rituals on the occasion of Dev Deepavali on the banks of river Ganga in Varanasi city, Uttar Pradesh, India.
Dev Deepavali is celebrated on the occasion of Kartik Poornima when the Ghats of Varanasi come alive with thousands of Diyas (earthen lamps). Dev Deepavali, celebrated on the fifteenth day of Diwali, is a tribute to river Ganga by the people of Varanasi. Dev Deepavali is held on the full moon day in the month of Kartik (also known as Kartik Purnima) and is observed with great fanfare and feasts. It is believed that on the day of Dev Deepavali, the Gods descend on Earth.
To mark the occasion and also to showcase the cultural heritage of Varanasi, the Uttar Pradesh Tourism department organizes a four-day Ganga Mahotsav around this period. A large number of Hindu devotees start assembling from the day of the Prabodhini Ekadasi (the eleventh day of the fortnight) itself. The official celebration is usually held on the Dasaswamedh Ghat. On the occasion of the Ganga Mahotsava, reputed artists and performers from all over the country come and perform, making the celebrations more eventful.
On the eve of Kartik Purnima, the number of pilgrims begins to increase manifolds and most of the pilgrims camp by the riverside. In the evening, pilgrims and local people decorate the entire riverbank with tiny earthen lamps. These lamps are lit as a mark of welcome to the Gods as they descend on earth. The little sparks of fire flicker elegantly and is a wonderful sight to watch.

Rickshaw riders waiting for the passengers outside the Mahavir Hanuman Temple in Patna, Bihar.
Mahavir Mandir is one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman, located in Patna, Bihar, India. Million of pilgrims visit the temple every year and is the second most visited religious shrine in North India. Acharya Kishore Kunal is the secretary of the Mahavir Mandir Temple Trust, Patna.
The Mahavir Mandir Trusts have the second highest budget in North India after the famous Maa Vaishno Devi shrine. The earning of Mahavir Mandir has gone now up to an average of ₹1 lakh per day.
The first establishment date of temple is unknown. This temple gained popularity in 1947 with large number of Hindu refugees coming to Patna after the partition of India. Long winding queues can be seen at the temple on Saturdays and Tuesdays, the traditional worshiping days of Lord Hanuman.
Thousands of people visit Mahavir Mandir on every Ram Navami and New Year celebration. On every Ram Navami waiting queues grow up to some kilometer long.

Asia's biggest cattle event, the Sonepur fair: Bihar
Crowd gather to witness the largest cattle fair in Asia. Sonepur Mela were animals are sold illegally, Bihar.
The Sonepur Cattle Fair or Malegaon Mela is held on Kartik Poornima (the full moon day) in the month of November in Sonepur, Bihar, on the confluence of river Ganges and Gandak. It is also known as Harihar Kshetra Mela and it attracts visitors from all over Asia. Till date, it is the biggest cattle fair of Asia and stretches on from fifteen days to one month. It has its origins during ancient times. This is when Chandragupta Maurya used to buy elephants and horses across the river Ganges. The Sonepur Cattle Fair once used to attract traders from places as distant as Central Asia.
Many farm animals can be bought at the Sonepur mela from all breeds of dogs, buffaloes, donkeys, ponies, Persian horses, rabbits, goats and even the occasional camel. Many varieties of birds and poultry are also available. The area that attracts all, however, is the Haathi Bazaar where elephants are lined up for sale. The Sonepur Fair is the only one where such a large number of elephants are traded - although they cannot legally be sold. Numerous stalls are also set up at the grounds of the Sonepur Cattle Fair. You will find a wide variety of goods in these stalls, ranging from garments, to weapons and furniture, toys, utensils and agricultural implements, jewelry and handicrafts. Major attraction is the sight of numerous elephants, beautifully decorated for the purpose of sale.

Top 10 Things to do in Southeast Asia attractions travel guide
Top 10 Things to do in Southeast Asia attractions travel guide

South East Asia Travel Video Guide

7/17/2015 -- Earthquake Overview and Global Forecast -- USA, EU, Asia, South America
Some media even saying PEOPLE SHOULD MOVE from the West coast (smh + facepalm)!
https://www.facebook.com/ShepardSmith/videos/vb.131010790489/10153367050185490/?type=2&theater;
Move?

Kashmir (Kashmiri: کٔشِیر / कॅशीर; Hindi: कश्मीर; Urdu: کشمیر; Shina: کشمیر), archaically spelled Cashmere, is the northwestern region of South Asia. Until the mid-19th century, the term Kashmir geographically denoted only the valley between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal mountain range. Today, it denotes a larger area that includes the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir (which consists of Jammu, the Kashmir Valley, and Ladakh), the Pakistan-administered autonomous territories of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit–Baltistan, and the Chinese-administered regions of Aksai Chin and the Trans-Karakoram Tract.
