This helps with cleanup because the big bundle stays together and you don't have grass blowing all over the neighborhood. Most people in my area cut pampas grass really short once a year. Explore - Argentina - Patagonia to the Pampas 1 of 4 - BBC Travel Documentary, recorded 12.02.2011
Simon Reeve leads a team of presenters on a journey through the spectacular landscapes of Argentina, from the vast ice fields of Patagonia to the wide-open plains of the pampas.
In the south, a group of indigenous people are locked in a historic dispute with the area's biggest landowners, Italian clothing giants Benetton; in Buenos Aires, the children of the disappeared are seeking to find out the truth of what happened to their parents at the hands of Argentina's generals; and in the pampas we meet one of the last true gauchos, whose way of life is being destroyed by an argricultural revolution.
On the way, we take in one of the greatest matches in world football, visit a penguin colony on the edge, and meet a bishop with a rather unorthodox interest in Evita.

Hakone Sengokuhara Pampas Grass
Hakone is a popular getaway resort blessed with mountainous natural beauty.
Sengokuhara is located in the north of the Hakone volcano caldera, wetlands and grasslands spread. The total area is approximately 16ha.
In the autumn the field turns a brilliant golden color, a sight that attracts many visitors each year. There is a single path available for walking through the field. The best time to visit to see the gold pampas grass is from October to mid November.
From early to late autumn, the plumes of the pampas form a carpet of gold, glittering brightly in the sun.

Travel video about destination Argentina.
Argentina is the second largest country in South America and a captivating land of tango, adventure and breathtaking nature.Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and the most European city in South America with buildings that are reminiscent of bygone times. The mighty Plaza De Mayo is the historic heart of the city, along with the presidential palace, the Casa Rosada and the Catedral Metropolitana. Today the tango is performed in each corner of the city and in the nineteenth century poor immigrants from Italy and Spain settled in Buenos Aires. This explains the fiery temperament and deep melancholy that is expressed by the dances and is evident with each flick of the leg. In what was once the red light district with its whore houses of colourful corrugated iron taken from numerous ship wrecks, the tango was born. We visit an estanzia, a feudal residence of the beef barons who once settled on the endless plains of the pampas and who built their farmhouses according to the rustic designs of the nobility. From Salta Station we begin a fascinating train journey on the Tren A Las Nubes, the “train into the clouds",.which will climb to more than three thousand metres above sea level along one of the highest railroads in the world. The Los Glaciares National Park is a mixture of lakes, glaciers, mountains and untouched wilderness yet despite the harsh climate the local vegetation captivates due to its diversity. Our journey comes to an end. From north to south, through cities and pampas to glaciers and mountains, Argentina is a dream destination come true!

Argentina is one of the jewels in the Latin American crown. A vast country stretching 3,500 kilometres from the Bolivian border in the north to Ushuaia and the gateway to Antarctica in the south, it is a place that offers some of the most impressive natural wonders anywhere on earth. It has a world-class tourist infrastructure, with arguably the best cuisine on the continent, and it is safe. But its not just that that makes a trip to Argentina feel so special. The country simply has a redoubtable spirit unlike any other in the region, and nowhere is that more evident than in its lively capital, Buenos Aires.
If Argentina is one of the jewels in the Latin American crown, so the cosmopolitan Buenos Aires is one of the standout cities of the continent. Many gateway cities are just that, and you’re best off getting in and getting out, but not the Argentine capital; this is a destination in its own right that ideally requires at least 3 days to truly explore. A place where the elegance of old Europe crashes against the colourful coast of Latin America, Buenos Aires is a beautiful city, with elegant and impressive architecture, relaxing parks and some great sites. Must see locations include the colourful Bocca district, famous for its brightly painted homes, San Telmo, renowned for its antique market and strange curiosity shops, Palermo, home to some of the city’s most stylish restaurants, hotel and bars, and the smart district of Recoleta, most well-known for its famous cemetery, the final resting place of among others Argentina’s most famous daughter, Eva Peron.
From here heading north the first place you’ll be tempted to visit is one of the country’s many natural wonders… the famous Iguazu Falls.
From here, working our way anti clockwise around the country you’ll come to Corrientes and the Iberia wetlands. Although not commonly visited by international travellers, we at Wild Frontiers love this place and run many trips to the atmospheric estancias where we have fun playing at being gauchos.
From here you come to Cordoba, the country’s second largest city. This is a region known for the pretty Andean foothills into which you can ride or walk.
Next up is the famous wine region of Mendoza. Anyone interested in gastronomy trips should spend at least 3 days here, where, staying at one of the locally-run boutique wineries you can enjoy some world class dining. But Mendoza isn’t only about cuisine… it is also the gateway to hikes up the America’s highest mountain, Aconcagua, and some good horse rides into the low Andes.
Heading north of here is the spectacular coloured mountain desert region of Salta, and the northern routes into Chile and the Atacama Desert, or heading further east you’ll next come to San Martin de los Andes, where you’ll find some wonderful mountain scenery with a few great estancias again offering some great riding, and fishing, experiences this time into the higher Andes.
Now heading south, the next location you’ll come to is one of the countries major highlights, the lake district of Bariloche. Here you can enjoy all manner of activities, from riding and cycling, to kayaking and abseiling, or just relaxing with a nice picnic on one of the regions many lakes.
Heading south on highway 40, passed the fossilised remains of the world’s largest dinosaur, and the famous painted hands at Cueva de las Manos, you come to FitzRoy National Park before hitting one of the most impressive areas on the continent, El Calafate, and the regions wide open steppes and famous glaciers that here crash down into the lakes. There are many such glaciers but perhaps the most famous is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Puerto Moreno glacier.
To the east of the country is Puerto Valdez, from which between October to March the Orca whales can be spotted, and in the very south is Ushuaia, and the gateway to Antarctica. At Wild Frontiers we have relationships with some of the best Antarctic explorer vessels.
Argentina is a huge country and unless you are lucky enough to have a month to travel you are unlikely to see it all in one visit. The important thing is to work out what you’d like to see most, and then let us help you work out the best way to do it.
Although Argentina may not have the level indigenous cultural traditions that Bolivia and Peru enjoy; although it might not have the beaches, colour and sheer razzmatazz that Brazil can boast, Argentina does have a plethora of sites and experiences with which to seduce the visitor. With its dramatic Patagonian steppes, its extraordinary glaciers, its colourful mountains and deserts, its lakes and its coast, Argentina’s landscapes are second to none. Its wildlife is impressive and varied, its cuisine is world class and in its cultured, cosmopolitan capital city, it has one of the most fun metropolises anywhere on the planet.

10 Top Tourist Attractions in Argentina
====================
Argentina is a large country in South America famous for its tango, the pampas and beef consumption. Less well known is the fact that the highest peak in the Americas, Aconcagua, lies on its western border and that the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia, is located on its lower shore.
Perhaps the most obvious reason to visit Argentina is Buenos Aires, one of the most fascinating of all Latin American capitals. It’s an immensely enjoyable place just to wander about, watch soccer, go shopping or simply soaking up the unique atmosphere.
10 - Ibera Wetlands
=================
The Ibera Wetlands are the second-largest wetlands in world after the Pantanal in Brazil. A true paradise for nature lovers it has the richest fauna of all Argentina. Birds, caimans, capybaras, pampas deer, howler monkeys, maned wolves and armadillos can all be seen by visitors on foot, boat or horseback.
9 - Ushuaia
=========
Situated on the Beagle Channel, Ushuaia is commonly regarded as the southernmost city in the world. In the past, the Ushuaia has been a missionary base, penal colony and naval base but is now a major tourist attraction in Argentina, complete with casinos, hotels and restaurants. The town is commonly used as a base for hiking, skiing and cruises to Antarctica.
8 - Mendoza Wine Regions
=====================
The Mendoza wine region is considered the heart of the winemaking industry in Argentina. Located in the eastern foothills of the Andes vineyards are planted at the some of the highest altitudes in the world. The city of Mendoza is the place to base yourself if you plan to tour the vineyards. The city’s wide range of tour operators also makes it a great place to organize rafting, skiing and other adventures in the nearby Andes.
7 - Monte Fitz Roy
=============
Monte Fitz Roy is a 3,375 meter (11,073 ft) high mountain in the Southern Patagonian Ice Field on the border between Argentina and Chile. The mountain attracts many photographers thanks to its otherworldly shape. It was first climbed in 1952 by French alpinists Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone.
6 - Beagle Channel
===============
The Beagle Channel is a strait in the Tierra del Fuego Archipelago, in the extreme south of Argentina. The channel is one of the three navigable passages around South America, the other ones are the Straits of Magellan to the north, and the open ocean Drake Passage to the south. A boat trip is the best way to view the Beagle Channel, with attractions such as the sea-lion colony at Isla de los Lobos, and Isla de Pájaros.
5 - Valdes Peninsula
================
Valdes Peninsula is an important nature reserve noted for its unique fauna and geology. The coastline is inhabited by sea lions, elephant seals and – from October till March – penguins. Whales can be found in the waters located between the Valdes Peninsula and the Patagonian mainland between May and December. Off the coast, in the open sea off the peninsula Orcas can be found.
4 - La Boca
========
La Boca is a working class district of Buenos Aires. It is a popular neighborhood for tourists with its colorful houses and the Caminito street, where tango artists perform and tango-related memorabilia is sold. Other attractions include the La Ribera theatre, many tango clubs and Italian taverns.
3 - Bariloche
=========
San Carlos de Bariloche is a city on the foothills of the Andes known for its Swiss-like atmosphere and its chocolate shops. The city with its surrounding mountains and lakes is famous for skiing but is also a great destination for sight-seeing, water sports, trekking and climbing. Many travelers combine a visit to Bariloche with touring through the Andean Lakes area and in particular along the Road of the Seven Lakes.
2 - Perito Moreno Glacier
==================
The Perito Moreno Glacier is an enormous glacier located in the Los Glaciares National Park. It is one of the most important tourist attractions in Argentina due to its size and accessibility. It is less than two hours by bus from El Calafate while viewing platforms and trails make the visit and the observation easy and pleasant. Boat tours are also a popular way of seeing the Perito Moreno Glacier and many other glaciers and places in the National Park Los Glaciares.
1 - Iguazu Falls
===============
One of the great tourist destinations of the world, Iguaçu Falls is situated on the border between Brazil and Argentina. Most visitors reach the falls from the Argentine side through the city of Puerto Iguazú. A train brings visitors directly to the entrance of Devil’s Throat, which at a height of 82 meter (269 ft) is the most impressive of the 275 falls that make up the Iguazu Falls.

Travel video about destination Patagonia in Argentina.
Patagonia is a land of endless plains, a fantastic world of ice and rock but also a land of powerful winds and distant dreams. Our journey begins in the deepest south of Argentina, at the 'end of the world' within a natural paradise between both sky and earth.
In the Tierra Del Fuego region, Ushuaia is known as the Gateway to Antarctica and is a small town that has experienced a great boom in recent years. It is difficult to believe that not so long ago, nothing but the wooden huts of Anglican missionaries stood there and 400 criminals were forced to build a prison.
The Tierra Del Fuego National Park was founded in 1960 and is very accessible. The Rio Pipo snakes through the varied landscape and more than 60,000 hectares cover the border with Chile surrounded by snow covered mountains that survey the land below.
By boat we travel to the impressive Glaciar Grey at the southern end of the Patagonian Ice Field, where the ice masses of the glacier meet the waters of the lake and huge chunks of floating ice slowly break away in dramatic fashion.
Patagonia is one of the oldest landscapes on Earth, a beautiful world of rock and savannah created out of fire, water, wind and ice and subject to constant change.

Travel video about destination Patagonia.
Patagonia is the most southerly region in Argentina and the second largest state in South America. A dream destination of strong winds, endless plains, glacial landscapes and total isolation at the end of the world.In the Tierra Del Fuego region, Ushuaia is known as the Gateway to Antarctica and is a small town that has experienced a great boom in recent years. It is difficult to believe that not long ago nothing but the wooden huts of Anglican missionaries stood here, those who introduced Christianity to the Fireland Indians in 1869. The Tierra Del Fuego National Park was founded in 1960 and is very accessible. The Rio Pipo snakes through the varied landscape and more than sixty thousand hectares cover the border with Chile surrounded by snow covered mountains that survey the land below. Only a handful of people are allowed to visit Penguin Island, closely supervised by a guide and restricted to well-defined pathways. It is fascinating to watch the Magellan Penguins, which actually bray like donkeys, as they waddle along in true penguin-like comical fashion. From the Lago Nordenskjöld there is a wonderful view of the park’s natural landmark, the two thousand five hundred metre high Torres Del Paine. The remains of a dead guanako indicate that the park is also the habitat of a legendary yet dreaded predator, the puma. Patagonia is an ancient rock and savannah landscape that has been created out of fire, water, wind and ice and is one of the oldest landscapes on Planet Earth. Constantly changing but also frozen in the mists of time itself!

Lago Hermoso - San Martin de los Andes - Patagonia, Argentina
The Red Stag (or Red Deer) arrived to Argentina from Europe around 1900 by virtue of Pedro Luro's desire to introduce the game animal into the vast stretches of the Southern Cone of South America. The population has since thrived and many hunters claim world class trophies on an annual basis in the Andes and Pampas regions. Despite the high quality of hunting, Argentina remains largely unknown to many big game hunters around the world.

Home Hotel, which opened in 2005, is without a doubt one of the coolest boutique hotels in Buenos Aires. It is located in the heart of Palermo Hollywood. It made the Conde Nast hot list for 2006. The hotel is stylish, but the atmosphere is relaxed and informal.
"Home is like a little oasis in the city. It is a small hotel, it has only 18 rooms." Right now I am in one of the mid-range suites. It has a jacuzzi, a bathroom, beautiful bed, as you can see, and a small balcony. Now I am in another suite. This one is decorated in green. It has a much larger balcony and it is facing the street. No two rooms are alike here at Home Hotel.
"We have a spa with ayurvedic treatments. We have an excellent bar with great cocktails, and possibly the best selection of vodkas in the Pampas. Good food from breakfast to lunch, tapas and room service." Home is owned by a group of investors including record producer Tom Rickman, Patricia O'Shea, his wife, and U.K. record producer Flood. So, as you can imagine music plays an important part at Home Hotel.
"My husband, Tom, has done special music for each day of the week and each hour of the day, which gets changed every three months approximately. We also have stereos in each room and we have a CD library which is quite comprehensive. We also have iPod connectors. People that stay here are from all ages and everywhere in the world, but they have one thing in common, that the choice of hotel is very important - it is not a bed." I am Ande Wanderer, showing you Buenos Aires.

Patagonia is a region located at the southern end of South America, shared by Argentina and Chile. The region comprises the southern section of the Andes mountains to the southwest towards the Pacific Ocean and from the east of the mountain range to the valleys it follows the Colorado River south towards Carmen de Patagones in the Atlantic Ocean. To the west, it includes the territory of Valdivia through Tierra del Fuego archipelago.
The name Patagonia comes from the word patagón used by Magellan in 1520 to describe the native people that his expedition thought to be giants. It is now believed that the people he called the Patagons were Tehuelches, who tended to be taller than Europeans of the time.
The Argentine portion of Patagonia includes the provinces of Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut and Santa Cruz, as well as the eastern portion of Tierra del Fuego archipelago and the southernmost department of Buenos Aires province: Patagones. The Argentine politico-economic Patagonic Region includes the Province of La Pampa.
As the 1775 map shown here indicates, the Chilean Aysén and Magallanes regions have long been regarded as part of Patagonia, including the west side of Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn. More recently the government has included Palena Province in Los Lagos Region as part of Chilean Patagonia, and sometimes other parts of Valdivia and Llanquihue have been included as well.

I bet your neighborhood bookstore does not look anything like the one I am about to show you. This is El Ateneo, a massive bookstore located on Avenida, Santa Fe. What is unique about this bookstore is that it occupies a former theater. This magnificent building was called the Grand Splended Theater, it was built in the early nineteen hundreds. Many famous tango singers performed here, and the first movie theater with sound in Buenos Aires was here.
In December 2000, the theater was converted into El Ateneo bookstore. This building was declared the cultural Patromonia Buenos Aires and it still conserves it grand ambiance. In the dome there is a mirror by Orlandi which celebrates the end of the first world war. The majority of the books are in Spanish, but there is an English session with popular novels and classical works, as well as, many English books scattered through out the bookstore. Our books can be enjoyed in any language.
On the second floor you can find classical and jazz music, and down at the basement you can find popular music and children's books. If you want to sit and read here, you could come to the cafe which used to be the stage or sit at one of the balconies. There are several El Ateneo bookstores, this one is located in the Grand Theater on Avenue da Santa Fe. I am Veronica de Aboitiz showing you Buenos Aires.
