Slicing OSA-UCS Color Space to Inspire Bivariate Color Scheme Design for Thematic Maps
Cynthia Brewer, The Pennsylvania State University
The Optical Society of America Uniform Color Scales (OSA-UCS) has an intriguing structure useful for designing bivariate thematic map color schemes: a cuboctahedral geometry, giving seven cleavage planes and twelve equally distant neighbors for each color. UCS notation is L for lightness, j for yellow (jaune), and g for green. Holding j constant at zero slices from light to dark through greens and reds. An example diagonal slice is L+g=2, giving 56 sample colors ranging from light pink to dark green and flaring to blue-purples on one side and yellows on the other. Choosing nine colors for a 3x3-square bivariate map scheme from these complex cleavage plane...

According to scientific studies, the stone blocks of large Egyptian pyramids are artificial, reconstituted limestone. Joseph Davidovits, a French materials scientist first made this statement in the late 1970s. Pyramid stones being not natural rock but cast concrete or geopolymer is not a fringe claim. Multiple published material analyses, using various testing methods, including X-rays, plasma torch, electron microscopes, paleomagnetic investigation, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and more, all have proven that the core stones and casings of several pyramids are made of concrete like materials. One study even discovered the presence of silicon dioxide nanoscale spheres.
Despite mounting support from scientists, Egyptologists have rejected the concrete claim and stated that pyramid blocks are natural stones carved from nearby quarries, which were moved and heaved up huge ramps and set in place by armies of workers. But Bronze age Egyptians did not have nanotechnology – thus they cannot be the creators of these impressive pyramids. Then who constructed these highly advanced structures? They clearly predate the dynastic Egyptians. After the fall of this prehistoric sophisticated society, ancient Egyptians likely discovered the giant pyramids and might have repurposed a few as tombs.
The original function of these stone pyramids is a true mystery. What was their intended purpose if not tombs and why are they in distinct pyramid shapes? Did these structures in different regions in Egypt share a similar function? Why are they built with artificial limestone blocks? What purpose does the pyramids’ interior openings serve? Why are there blocked airshafts inside the great pyramid? A plausible hypothesis should be able to explain as many pyramids’ characteristics as possible, especially the dominant and common features among various pyramids.
My theory that the pyramids were part of prehistoric mines can easily explain most of the unique characteristics of Egyptian big stone pyramids, such as the pyramid shapes, the colossal sizes, their shared function, the outside casing stones, the small interior spaces, the nearby underground tunnels and much more, without convoluted and confusing narratives.
