Scott Stephens, Introduction 19 Jun 2015

Pope Francis has finally released his encyclical letter on the "care for our common home" - entitled Laudato Si'. Not since John Paul II's seismic 1995 encyclical Evangelium Vitae has a papal document been so eagerly anticipated, and so widely discussed. We have invited a number of influential theologians, ethicists and philosophers - including Chad Pecknold, Clive Hamilton, Celia Deane-Drummond, Norman Wirzba and Charles Camosy - to offer their reflections on this encyclical, and assess its moral and political significance. Archbishop Anthony Fisher on Pell and the Royal Commission

John L Allen Jr, Crux

Fisher, generally seen as a Pell protege and confidante, suggested the cardinal's critics are after something more than justice. "There's a desire for a scalp, for a big name to go down ... they want humiliation." Despite that, Fisher said he believes Pell has the backing of Pope Francis and predicted Pell will keep his Vatican job.

The Politics of Toughness

Waleed Aly, The Age

The truth is that for all the outrage from government figures, Zaky Mallah is a gift to them: the object of hate that justifies almost any conceivable measure and makes their aggression a virtue. This is about more than the politicisation of terrorism. This is about legitimising our most thoughtless instincts and debasing even the most sober criticism.
