Methodism (from Greek: μέθοδος - methodos, "pursuit of knowledge") is a movement of ProtestantChristianity represented by a number of denominations and organizations, claiming a total of approximately seventy million adherents worldwide. The movement traces its roots to John Wesley'sevangelistic revival movement within Anglicanism. His younger brother Charles was instrumental in writing much of the hymnody of the Methodist Church.George Whitefield, another significant leader in the movement, was known for his unorthodox ministry of itinerant open-air preaching. The Methodist Church is known for its missionary work, and its establishment of hospitals, universities, orphanages, soup kitchens, and schools to follow Jesus' command to spread the Good News and serve all people.
Wesley, along with his brother, founded the Holy Club while they were at Oxford, where John was a fellow and later a lecturer at Lincoln College. The holy club met weekly and they systematically set about living a holy life. They were branded as "Methodist" by students at Oxford who derided the methodical way they ordered their lives. Wesley took the attempted mockery and turned it into a title of honour. Initially Whitefield and the Wesleys merely sought reform, by way of a return to the gospel, within the Church of England, but the movement spread with revival and soon a significant number of Anglican clergy became known as Methodists in the mid-18th century. The movement did not form a separate denomination in England until after John Wesley's death in 1791. Although Wesley and the majority of his followers were decidedly Arminian in their theological outlook, George Whitefield, Howell Harris, and Selina Hastings, Countess of Huntingdon were notable for being Calvinistic Methodists, and the Presbyterian Church of Wales originated from the preaching of Harris and Whitfield.
Some thoughts on what it means to be Methodists from a few members of a United Methodist Church.

A Will to Choose traces the history of African-American Methodism beginning with their emergence in the fledgling American Methodist movement in the 1760s. Responding to Methodism's anti-slavery stance, African-Americans joined the new movement in large numbers and by the end of the eighteenth century, had made up the largest minority in the Methodist church, filling positions of authority as class leaders, exhorters, and preachers. Through the first half of the nineteenth century, African Americans used the resources of the church in their struggle for liberation from slavery and

Methodism, or the Methodist movement, is a group of historically related denominations of Protestant Christianity which derive their inspiration from the life and teachings of John Wesley. George Whitefield and John's brother Charles Wesley were also significant leaders in the movement. It originated as a revival within the 18th-century Church of England and became a separate Church following Wesley's death. Because of vigorous missionary activity, the movement spread throughout the British Empire, the United States, and beyond, today claiming approximately 80 million adherents worldwide. Methodism is characterized by its emphasis on helping the poor and the average person, its very systematic approach to building the person, and the "church" and its missionary spirit. These ideals are put into practice by the establishment of hospitals, universities, orphanages, soup kitchens, and schools to follow Jesus's command to spread the Good News and serve all people. Methodists are convinced that building loving relationships with others through social service is a means of working towards the inclusiveness of God's love. Most Methodists teach that Christ died for all of humanity, not just for a limited group, and thus everyone is entitled to God's grace and protection. In theology, this view is known as Arminianism. It denies that God has pre-ordained an elect number of people to eternal bliss while others are doomed to hell no matter what they do in life. However, Whitefield and several others were considered Calvinistic Methodists. The Methodist movement has a wide variety of forms of worship, ranging from high church to low church in liturgical usage; denominations that descend from the British Methodist tradition tend toward a less formal worship style, while American Methodism—in particular the United Methodist Church—is more liturgical. Methodism is known for its rich musical tradition; Charles Wesley was instrumental in writing much of the hymnody of the Methodist Church, and many other eminent hymn writers come from the Methodist tradition. Early Methodists were drawn from all levels of society, including the aristocracy, but the Methodist preachers took the message to labourers and criminals who tended to be left outside organized religion at that time. In Britain, the Methodist Church had a major impact in the early decades of the making of the working class (1760–1820). In the United States it became the religion of many slaves who later formed "black churches" in the Methodist tradition.

Methodism as failure - Our best resource
That word failure -the churches hate it. Yet the truth is that for Methodists there is the plain, simple fact of failure throughout John Wesley's long and highly productive life.
The mission to the North American Indian population was an abject failure, and his marriage was a failure. So it should come as no surprise to learn that three of his greatest writings, the sermon on Scriptural Christianity, the writings on Christian Perfection (which gave rise to the holiness movements characteristic of much conservative, evangelical and pentecostal Christianity) and the sermon on Original Sin were all doctrinal or theological failures.
Yet that sense of failure in Wesleyan theology also shows the seeds of great insight and practical theological wisdom
It's an uncomfortable paradigm for progressive Christianity as well. Failure is as much part of our learning and growing to spiritual depth and maturity as celebrating success.
Wesley's three doctrines contained failure and a sense of guilt. In Scriptural Christianity he regretted the fact he had published the final part of the sermon with its swingeing attack on Oxford dons and students. Christian Perfection was Wesley's most misunderstood doctrine, and even though he simplified and clarified by the end of his life, the damage was done early on. And Original Sin was to be a failure outside of his life, a misunderstanding of human nature.
But all these failures also had seeds of great insight. Wesley attempted to give what today we would call a Christian anthropology: an estimate of human nature and the human condition in the context of evolving, changing societies. Both Original Sin and Christian Perfection need to be understood in context as mutually modifying psychological and pastoral insights. And the attack on the loss of Christian insight at Oxford was not without its seed of success: Christianity among the 18th century Deists had robbed the Gospel of its experiential power.
Today we take it for granted that we can understand failure as the seeds of success, but this was radical insight in Wesley's era.

The Methodist movement is a group of historically related denominations of Protestant Christianity which derive their inspiration from the life and teachings of John Wesley.

This radical re-examination of the largest popular movement in Georgian England gives a bottom-up account of the growth, life and impact of early Methodism in an unlikely stronghold. It digs beneath the seemingly steady advance portrayed by official membership returns to uncover a much more unstable and rapidly changing picture. One in which different generations and social groups appropriated the religious structures of the movement as vehicles to express a wide variety of aspirations and grievances.

Go inside the oldest Methodist church in the U.S. in continuous use. Historic St. George’s in Philly has been around since before the Revolutionary War but this place is more than a museum with artifacts from John Wesley and Francis Asbury. United Methodists of today come to learn about the founding fathers of the denomination in America within the walls where it all started. “Being in this place where they sat and where so much happened, you can feel it. It’s tangible. It’s a treasure that you can touch and feel,” says current pastor, the Rev. Maridel Whitmore. This landmark is one of the sites every United Methodist should see.

Why Study the Eucharist in Methodism with David Monkton
Dr David Monkton looks at the place of the Eucharist in Methodism from the time the Wesley’s in the eighteenth century until. He does this by taking us through one of the eucharistic hymns of Charles Wesley: ‘Jesus we thus obey.’ He draws attention to the fact that Methodism, although ‘low church’ in appearances, is ‘high church’ in its theology. Moreover, it expresses its eucharistic theology mainly through its hymns.

Methodism

Through the first half of the nineteenth century, African Americans used the resources of the church in their struggle for liberation from slavery and racism in the secular culture.

Methodism as failure - Our best resource
