Clockwise is a 1986 British comedy film starring John Cleese, Penelope Wilton, Alison Steadman, Stephen Moore and Sharon Maiden. It was directed by Christopher Morahan, written by Michael Frayn and produced by Michael Codron. The film was co-produced by Moment Films and Thorn EMI Screen Entertainment. The music in the film was composed by George Fenton.
Michael Frayn's screenplay has a different opening, involving illuminated digits on a clock radio, Cleese waking up when the alarm goes off and Cleese seen naked and wet in the shower ("a sight few of us expected to see in our lifetime").
For his performance in the film, Cleese won the 1987 Peter Sellers Award For Comedy at the Evening Standard British Film Awards.
The story describes the efforts of Brian Stimpson (Cleese), the headmaster of Thomas Tompion Comprehensive School, to travel to an annual Headmasters' Conference. Having been habitually late and disorganised as a young man, Stimpson has grown up to become fastidiously punctual, and his school runs "like clockwork". He is the first headmaster of a comprehensive school to be elected to chair a Headmaster's Conference, that honour usually being reserved for headmasters of the more prestigious private schools. After preparing and rehearsing his speech, he boards the wrong train on his way to the conference, loses the text of the speech, and suffers a series of setbacks as he tries to reach the conference.
Plot
Clockwise is the story of Ed, an everyman trapped by his routine who realizes his life could be much more exciting. Every single day he wakes up at the same time and does the same activities. However, one night Ed dreams he is in a park with plentiful nature. For the first time in his life he feels free. But something happens. He sees a strange figure sitting on a bench along the lake. Who is him? The man turns around and the vision is unbelievable. Ed finds out himself, wearing a suit and showing up a clock. What a shock! He wakes up astonished and looks at his ringing alarm. Affected by the dream, Ed decides to turn it off and stay on bed.

You're not so corned of it now

Brave Sir Henry swims the Serpentine in 16 seconds flat. We applaud him from
the plimsoll line; Sir Henry lifts his hat... We drink some wine. We hold
up signs. We give him 9 point 87 every time. Every time! That's just
the way things are in heaven here.
Sweet Katrina preens in six way mirrors under triple moons. I have seen her
glide along the river murmuring this tune. Here.
A little bird just told me that my time is nearly through and soon
I must forget this place and crawl right back to you. Childhood ends and
"sense" descends, and I'll believe in you. I'll be leaving you.
