The Grand Canyon (Hopi: Ongtupqa; Yavapai: Wi:kaʼi:la, Spanish: Gran Cañón) is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in the state of Arizona in the United States. It is contained within and managed by Grand Canyon National Park, the Kaibab National Forest, Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, the Hualapai Tribal Nation, the Havasupai people and the Navajo Nation. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.
The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (6,093 feet or 1,857 meters). Nearly two billion years of Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. While some aspects about the history of incision of the canyon are debated by geologists, several recent studies support the hypothesis that the Colorado River established its course through the area about 5 or 6 million years ago. Since that time, the Colorado River has driven the down-cutting of the tributaries and retreat of the cliffs, simultaneously deepening and widening the canyon.
A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.
Grand Canyon National Park is the United States' 15th oldest national park. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, the park is located in Arizona. The park's central feature is the Grand Canyon, a gorge of the Colorado River, which is often considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The park covers 1,217,262 acres (1,901.972 sq mi; 492,608 ha; 4,926.08 km2) of unincorporated area in Coconino and Mohave counties.
Grand Canyon was officially designated a national park in 1919, though the landmark had been well known to Americans for over thirty years prior. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt visited the site and said: "The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison—beyond description; absolutely unparalleled through-out the wide world... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children's children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see."
A gorge or canyon (cañon, old spelling occasionally still used) is a deep ravine between pairs of escarpments or cliffs and is the most often carved landscape by the erosive activity of a river over geologic timescales. Rivers have a natural tendency to cut through underlying surfaces so will eventually wear away rock layers to lessen their own pitch slowing their waters; given enough time, their bottoms will gradually reach a baseline elevation—which is the same elevation as the body of water it will eventually drain into. This action, when the river source and mouth are at much different base elevations will form a canyon, particularly through regions where softer rock layers are intermingled with harder layers more resistant to weathering.
A canyon may also refer to a rift between two mountain peaks, such as those in ranges including the Rocky Mountains, the Alps, the Himalayas or the Andes. Usually a river or stream and erosion carve out such splits between mountains. Examples of mountain-type canyons are Provo Canyon in Utah or Yosemite National Park in California's Sierra Nevada. Canyons within mountains, or gorges that have an opening on only one side are called box canyons. Slot canyons are very narrow canyons, often with smooth walls.

This trail is by far the most amazing natural wonder I have ever seen. The walk is about a .3 mile walk along this tiny 4ft wide (in some places) trail with 5000ft drop on either side (no hand railing). The trail ends at Bright Angel Point with the most beautiful vista. Absolutely breathtaking!!!

One of the highlights of the trip. Grand Canyon, Arizona, amazing, beautiful. Need to go back. There's no question.
Every fall for the last 6 years we've camped at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. During last year's trip we asked a ranger where and when is the best place to go camping in the park. We were told the North Rim in the fall is the best place and time of year to go camping in the Grand Canyon. After this trip I can say they were right! The North Rim looks completely different than the South Rim. The views are different and the park is not as crowded or commercialized. The fall colors are beautiful too. We had a great spot (T-06) that had great views of the canyon. The temps were in the mid-sixties during the day and low thirties at night. We saw elk, tons of deer, two herds of buffalo, a few antelope and wild turkeys. The North Rim is more remote than the South but its definitel...
The North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona is different than the South Rim that most tourists visit, but it is, nonetheless, just as glorious in it's enormity, texture, design and color. Beyond the lodge area, it has several magnificent drives and hikes around the rim. Definitely worth the effort. From our annual family trip to the Southwest. After visiting Zion National Park we traveled to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. The North Rim Lodge sits on the Kaibab Plateau directly 10 miles across the canyon from the South Rim Lodge. The North Rim is much more forested than the South Rim and is amazing. Video recorded on June 23-24, 2010 using a Canon Vixia HF S21 HD camcorder, cine-mode, 24fps, with WD-H58 wide angle lens.
Spectacular Grand Canyon Lodge is tucked away in a remote corner of the Grand Canyon's North Rim. It was constructed in 1927-28 and designed by architect Stanley Gilbert Underwood, who also designed Bryce Canyon Lodge, Zion Lodge and The Ahwahnee in Yosemite. Underwood's use of natural building materials, combined with his unique flair for rustic design, was ideally suited to the emerging NPS attitude about architecture in the national parks. Today, Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim is operated by Forever Resorts. For lodging information visit www.grandcanyonlodgenorth.com Filmed in high defintion, this Grand Canyon Lodge video is a bonus feature on Finley-Holiday's "Bryce, Zion & the North Rim DVD" and is available on location at the North Rim and from www.finleyholiday.com. Travel video about destination Grand Canyon in the United States of America. Formed at the point where the Colorado River breaks through the mountains of the American West, the 1800 metre deep Grand Canyon is endowed with a wealth of natural forms and shapes which have made it inevitable that it would have a colourful and important role to play within the myths of creation of the region’s indigenous inhabitants. The Native American Indians chose it as their ‘Happy Hunting Grounds’ in which man’s soul lives on after death. Myth and legend tell of how a giant buffalo ripped open the earth with its horns forcing it upwards toward heaven. This is the kingdom of ‘Coyote’, creator of the world, who is answerable only to the God Manitou. The Grand Canyon is fact, fiction, legend and myth…a geograp...

Travel video about destination Grand Canyon in The USA. There are few places on Earth that highlight the power of nature or are as impressive as the truly awesome Grand Canyon. Millions of years ago erosion and the relentless power of the Colorado River created its magnificent landscape and even today the river continues to force its way through the rock, sand and mud of Canyon. The Canyon extends for four hundred kilometres and its width ranges from between six and thirty kilometres. In 1919 the American government designated the region as a protected area. The first to discover the canyons were the Anasazi Indians who settled in the area around a thousand years ago. They hunted for food and also cultivated corn, pumpkins and beans in many of the neighbouring valleys. Even today a small ...
