Evolutionary biologist Beth Shapiro visited Google's Cambridge, MA office to discuss her book, "How to Clone a Mammoth: The Science of De-Extinction".
In the book, Dr. Shapiro considers de-extinction's practical benefits and ethical challenges. Would de-extinction change the way we live? Is this really cloning? What are the costs and risks? And what is the ultimate goal?
Beth Shapiro is associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including Nature and Science, and she was a 2009 recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship.

James Gordon Bennett, the eccentric and stupendously wealthy owner of The New York Herald, had recently captured the world's attention by dispatching Stanley to Africa to find Dr. Livingstone. Now he was keen to re-create that sensation on an even more epic scale. So he funded an official U.S. naval expedition to reach the Pole, choosing as its captain a young officer named George Washington De Long, who had gained fame for a rescue operation off the coast of Greenland. De Long led a team of 32 men deep into uncharted Arctic waters, carrying the aspirations of a young country burning to become a world power. On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds in the grip of "Arctic Fever."
The ship sailed into uncharted seas, but soon was trapped in pack ice. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the hull was breached. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew abandoned the ship. Less than an hour later, the Jeannette sank to the bottom, and the men found themselves marooned a thousand miles north of Siberia with only the barest supplies. Thus began their long march across the endless ice—a frozen hell in the most lonesome corner of the world. Facing everything from snow blindness and polar bears to ferocious storms and frosty labyrinths, the expedition battled madness and starvation as they desperately strove for survival.
With twists and turns worthy of a thriller, In The Kingdom of Ice is a
spellbinding tale of heroism and determination in the most unforgiving territory on Earth.

An abyssal plain is an underwater plain on the deep ocean floor, usually found at depths between 3000 and 6000 m. Lying generally between the foot of a continental rise and a mid-ocean ridge, abyssal plains cover more than 50% of the Earth’s surface. They are among the flattest, smoothest and least explored regions on Earth. Abyssal plains are key geologic elements of oceanic basins (the other elements being an elevated mid-ocean ridge and flanking abyssal hills). In addition to these elements, active oceanic basins (those that are associated with a moving plate tectonic boundary) also typically include an oceanic trench and a subduction zone.
Abyssal plains were not recognized as distinct physiographic features of the sea floor until the late 1940s and, until very recently, none had been studied on a systematic basis. They are poorly preserved in the sedimentary record, because they tend to be consumed by the subduction process. The creation of the abyssal plain is the end result of spreading of the seafloor (plate tectonics) and melting of the lower oceanic crust. Magma rises from above the asthenosphere (a layer of the upper mantle) and as this basaltic material reaches the surface at mid-ocean ridges it forms new oceanic crust. This is constantly pulled sideways by spreading of the seafloor. Abyssal plains result from the blanketing of an originally uneven surface of oceanic crust by fine-grained sediments, mainly clay and silt. Much of this sediment is deposited by turbidity currents that have been channelled from the continental margins along submarine canyons down into deeper water. The remainder of the sediment is composed chiefly of pelagic sediments. Metallic nodules are common in some areas of the plains, with varying concentrations of metals, including manganese, iron, nickel, cobalt, and copper. These nodules may provide a significant resource for future mining ventures.

When the Karluk sank, he spent six months on Wrangel Island with the other crew members. He returned to Wrangel Island in 1921 as a member of the expedition led by Allan R. The Ultimate, Best Ever Snow Geese Video (HD)
Thousands of snow geese take flight, flutter down to land in dense flocks, and soar again -- and again -- from morning sun until rosy sunset in this magnificently beautiful video filmed in Washington State's rich Stillaguamish and Skagit River deltas, with the powerfully uplifting chords of music by Rho.
The Stillaguamish and Skagit River estuaries in northwest Washington State offer winter habitat to hundreds of thousands of snow geese. These snow geese are a unique population of intercontinental travelers shared by three countries: the United States, Canada, and Russia. The snow geese make an arduous annual flight to Russia's Chuckchi Sea, breeding on Wrangel Island off the north coast of Siberia.
Please visit my beautiful photography website http://www.wildnwbeauty.com and my Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/WildNWBeauty for incredible high-resolution photographs of snow geese and other wildlife, as well as the majestic wild scenery of the Pacific Northwest.

MAMMOTHS OF THE ICE AGE - Discovery History Animals documentary
A mammoth is any species of the extinct genus Mammuthus, proboscideans commonly equipped with long, curved tusks and, in northern species, a covering of long hair. They lived from the Pliocene epoch (from around 5 million years ago) into the Holocene at about 4,500 years ago[1][2] in Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. The remains of one of the last surviving mammoths, dating 4,300 years BP (Before Present) was found on Wrangel Island, and its genome has been sequenced.[3] They were members of the family Elephantidae, which also contains the two genera of modern elephants and their ancestors.

Hampton Sides "In the Kingdom of Ice" | Authors at Google
In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe: the North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans, although theories abounded. The foremost cartographer in the world, a German named August Petermann, believed that warm currents sustained a verdant island at the top of the world. National glory would fall to whoever could plant his flag upon its shores.

Kein Entkommen Russlands modernster Knast DOKU Dokumentation
Kein Entkommen Russlands modernster Knast DOKU Dokumentation

What is Chukchi Sea?
A report all about Chukchi Sea for homework/assignment
Chukchi Sea () is a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean. It is bounded on the west by the De Long Strait, off Wrangel Island, and in the east by Point Barrow, Alaska, beyond which lies the Beaufort Sea. The Bering Strait forms its southernmost limit and connects it to the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The principal port on the Chukchi Sea is Uelen in Russia. The International Date Line crosses the Chukchi Sea from NW to SE. It is displaced eastwards to avoid Wrangel Island as well as the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug on the Russian mainland.

Canadian Arctic Expedition - Frederick W. Maurer
Canadian Arctic Expedition - Frederick W. Maurer
A survivor of the Karluk disaster which was a part of the Vilhjalmur Stefansson's Canadian expedition.
Strangly, Maurer returned to Wrangel Island eight years later (the island from which he'd been rescued in 1914) despite his experience with the Karluk disaster. This time he was involved in another ill-fated expedition by Stefansson. Stefansson's goal was to colonize Wrangel island and claim it for Canada.
Sadly, this time Maurer died.
Prior to his involvement with the C.A.E., Maurer wrote about his voyage experiences aboard a whaling ship: Belvedere
Adventures on an Arctic whaler, 1911-1912.
Maurer, Frederick W.
http://beta.worldcat.org/archivegrid/data/42068562
Maurer's narrative of his experiences on board the Belvedere during its two-year (1911-1912) whaling voyage from San Francisco to the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, with stops at many Alaskan ports.
Maurer joined the crew of the Belvedere in 1911. He met Vilhjalmur Stefansson in 1912 and became a member of Stefansson's Canadian Arctic Expedition in 1913, sailing on the Karluk. When the Karluk sank, he spent six months on Wrangel Island with the other crew members. He returned to Wrangel Island in 1921 as a member of the expedition led by Allan R. Crawford and financed by Stefansson.
