Memphis is a city in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Tennessee, and the county seat of Shelby County. The city is located on the 4th Chickasaw Bluff, south of the confluence of the Wolf and Mississippi rivers.
Memphis had a population of 662,897 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in the state of Tennessee, the third largest in the Southeastern United States, and the 20th largest in the United States. The greater Memphis metropolitan area, including adjacent counties in Mississippi and Arkansas, had a 2010 population of 1,316,100. This makes Memphis the second largest metropolitan area in Tennessee, surpassed only by metropolitan Nashville, which has overtaken Memphis in recent years. Memphis is the youngest of Tennessee's major cities. A resident of Memphis is referred to as a Memphian, and the Memphis region is known, particularly to media outlets, as the "Mid-South".
Because it occupies a substantial bluff rising from the Mississippi River, the site of Memphis is a natural location for settlement. The area was first settled by the Mississippian Culture and then by the Chickasaw Indian tribe. For 10,000 years they occupied the bluffs along the river, building a large mound on the bluff. European exploration came later, beginning in the 16th century with Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto and French explorers led by René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle.

Plot
People You May Know is a web series about the humour and heartbreak of online dating, set in a failing advertising agency that'll sell anything. It's an ensemble comedy that tangles together a range of characters - from pithy to puerile, reasonable to ridiculous - in a twisted, blind relationship in which nobody knows who they've really fallen for. Created by Imogen & James Dall.
Plot
This is the story of a little penguin named Mumble who has a terrible singing voice and later discovers he has no Heartsong. However, Mumble has an astute talent for something that none of the penguins had ever seen before: tap dancing. Though Mumble's mom, Norma Jean, thinks this little habit is cute, his dad, Memphis, says it "just ain't penguin." Besides, they both know that, without a Heartsong, Mumble may never find true love. As fate would have it, his one friend, Gloria, happens to be the best singer around. Mumble and Gloria have a connection from the moment they hatch, but she struggles with his strange "hippity- hoppity" ways. Mumble is just too different--especially for Noah the Elder, the stern leader of Emperor Land, who ultimately casts him out of the community. Away from home for the first time, Mumble meets a posse of decidedly un-Emperor-like penguins--the Adelie Amigos. Led by Ramon, the Adelies instantly embrace Mumble's cool dance moves and invite him to party with them. In Adelie Land, Mumble seeks the counsel of Lovelace the Guru, a crazy-feathered Rockhopper penguin who will answer any of life's questions for the price of a pebble. Together with Lovelace and the Amigos, Mumble sets out across vast landscapes and, after some epic encounters, proves that by being true to yourself, you can make all the difference in the world.

Strike Up The Band ! * Here comes happiness . . . in a merry medley of romance . . . and rhythm !
I am going
Down the long lonesome road to Memphis
And I have come
From the valley of the damned to Memphis
My love has gone
With the devil to the well of poison
But I declare,
I drank my fill from that well of poison
The lord’s going to save my soul,
Somewhere in the hills of Memphis
And the lord’s going to rest my bones,
How do you protect a forty-two year old from himself
I saw on TV, his road manager speak of his demise
The pain is here, and it won't be long
In Memphis, tens of thousands of fans paid there respects
The pain is here, and it won't be long
Memphis
(Chuck Berry)
Long distance information, give me Memphis Tennessee
Help me find the party trying to get in touch with me
She could not leave her number, but I know who placed the call
'Cause my uncle took the message and he wrote it on the wall
Help me, information, get in touch with my Marie
She's the only one who'd phone me here from Memphis Tennessee
Her home is on the south side, high up on a ridge
Just a half a mile from the Mississippi Bridge
Help me, information, more than that I cannot add
Only that I miss her and all the fun we had
But we were pulled apart because her mom did not agree
And tore apart our happy home in Memphis Tennessee
Last time I saw Marie she's waving me good-bye
With hurry home drops on her cheek that trickled from her eye
Try to put me through to her in Memphis Tennessee
My mother cleans Elvis' house
Yeah, she and everybody else
Who moved to Memphis for the King
She used to work at the Motel 6
Now she gets free guitar picks
That's how I learned to play and sing
I've been playing the hotel scene
Living out my mother's dreams
Strumming underneath the disco lights
All kinds of people come in
We got this psychic from Beijing
She read my cards right there that night
And then I dreamed that my soul mate
Was a motel clerk in Jersey
Who has not met me, so why am I in this Hotel in Memphis
When I just want to kiss somebody tonight
My mother doesn't seem to mind that
Elvis isn't still alive
She just toils in memory
She's no hippie, she's no flake
She just thinks that it's her fate
And who am I to disagree
Everybody's got a heart to follow
Everybody's got to make that call
As I look around the hotel scene
I'm doing pretty good with my band
People come shake my hand
But true love is what I need
So I dream about my soul mate
Who's a motel clerk in Jersey
Who has not met me so why am I in this Hotel in Memphis
When I just want to kiss somebody tonight
So I'm gonna take the Greyhound all the way to Jersey
I hope you meet me 'cause
I don't care if I ever get famous
Crazy to remember that frozen winter
Snow-bound by a lovely face
The quiet grace soothed me
The dark wine, the warm gaze
An otherworldly spell conspired to amaze
But like those winter days it wasn't made to last forever
And Sunny gone that way
Wiled to remember Stockholm December
A drunken choir
The ancient fire cooled me
Suddenly the spark flew off into the dark and left me there
As if she never knew me
A dark smile on a grey page
Like some faded photograph that someone tossed away
Someone tossed away
The silence still amazes me and Sunny gone that way
You ignored my letters, ignored my calls
Till there was nobody left for you to ignore at all
The only thing there was you and your prayers
And your silence says it all
The choir sang, guitars played
Fallen angels all across our unithat way
Like the Milky Way, its beauty still amazes me
And Sunny gone that way
Maybe we should never wonder
Maybe we should live here like we do
Dreamin' of a good life
Like it wasn't meant for me and you
Who am I to question
My father was a good man all his life
He never wanted nothin'
He just lived like you and
I would love to fly to Memphis
And ask the King what I should do
'Cause I believe he's somewhere out there
Don't you?
We just sit here watching tv
We eat everything the network wants us to
Baby I've seen every rerun
I know everything they say and do
I saw it on the X-Files
Mulder kinda thinks the way I do
A pilgrimage to Memphis
Is what my soul needs to break through
I want to drive to Memphis
The King will tell me what to do
'Cause I believe he's somewhere out there
Don't you?
I'm tired of all these questions
I've been asking questions all my life
But I believe in something
That will change my little life
Tonight I'll drive to Memphis
I'll show the King a thing or two
'Cause I believe he's somewhere out there
Don't you?
I've always wanted something better
But I am as scared as you
But I believe there's something out there
Don't you...don't you?
Memphis, where the hell is Memphis?
I got to get away, study my geography
I'm just a shadow of the boy I used to be
I used to see the light, now it's all a mystery
I used to feel the beat, now I feel a million miles from
Memphis, where the hell is Memphis?
I used dirty words never too excessively
But saying rock 'n' roll never seemed so bad to me
I wanna settle in hip and happy company
I was in and out in a second on my way to
Memphis, where the hell is Memphis?
Memphis, so where the hell is Memphis?
I had a one-way ticket and a little radio
I turned it on, heard the sound from twenty years ago
Somebody smiled and said, that's the only way to go
He died at twenty-one, now nobody's innocent in
Memphis, where the hell is Memphis?
Somebody turned around, said, I got to disagree
He wrote that sort of turn people out to anarchy
He made them think about Marlon Brando on TV
I guess they still went down against anything they got in
Memphis, where the hell is Memphis?
I met a wise old man, he had longer hair than me
He said, ?Memphis is nothing like it used to be?
A hundred dead guitarists lying in the cemetery
I felt a sudden chill, now I'm not so sure about
Memphis, where the hell is Memphis?
I'm on a lonesome train, on a lonesome track
I guess I'll jump right off, head for home, double back
And though I'm better now I know that no one knows the facts
I guess I'll start again, forget I ever heard about
Memphis, where the hell is
Where the hell is
Where the hell is
Way back Friday wasn't my day
I hung my boots on the factory door
I found a diesel, hit it my way
I made my bed here on the floor
Where the station never closes
Only people here shut down
I thought I'd never live to see the day
I like the view to fade away
And out of the dark night I see
There's a light on in Memphis
There's a party there tonight
Someone left the light on in Memphis
Oh, Elvis must be coming home tonight
I got to know you I've got to own you
I wanna help you anyway I can
I know you're out there hard that somewhere
Your mystery train keeps rolling on till I
See the light on in Memphis
I keep your candle burning bright
Someone left the light on in Memphis
Oh, Elvis must be coming home tonight
Well I'm not one for complaining
Cause you're not answering my mail
I thought I'd never live to see the day
I like some view
And out of the dark night I see
I can see
See the light on in Memphis
Your candle burns in Tennessee
Someone left the light on in Memphis
Long distance information give me Memphis, Tennessee

If I can just make it down to Memphis all my troubles would go away
If I can get down to Memphis maybe I’ll be OK
They got a city that’s just waiting to let me open up and breath
If I can get down to Memphis where they’ve got a place for me
Cause that’s where people go you know when they got nothing left to
lose yeah
That’s where you end up down there when you’ve got nothing better to
If I could just make it down to Memphis maybe I could pull through
Lord
If I can just make it down to Memphis maybe I could pull through
Well Elvis ah Elvis never meant a fucking thing to me
If I can get down to Memphis I’ll be the king
They got a river runs right through there well maybe I’ll just take a
swim
If I can get down to Memphis and start all over again
Maybe I could pull through
Maybe I could pull through
Maybe I could change
Maybe I could (change)
You don’t love me (I hate everything*) I can’t stop drinking I’m almost
50 years old But If I could make it down to Memphis well God who
knows
And so there’s babies in Africa with their bellies all swolled up
Well doesn’t it make you ashamed of all of us
Well Memphis is where you go you know when you got nothing left to
lose yeah That’s where you end up down there when you’ve got nothing
better to do
If I could just make it down to Memphis maybe I could pull through
Lord
If I could just make it down to Memphis maybe I could pull through
Magnificent in disguise
You’ve got watchers eyes
You’ll get a chance to show what
You’re made of
The question asked terrifies
And I can’t disguise
That your answer is what I’m afraid of
Help me to understand
If you have a plan
It would do us some good if you shared it
Help me to make it clear
What we’re doing here
It was a different dream
But you decided you had to compare it
Show me what you want to do
Ask me and I’ll follow you
Tell me something true
Speak it and I will believe it
Corruption of purity
It occurs to me
That you didn’t have much in the first place
“Telephone Diary, Chapters one to three”
When I read it
You should have seen your face
Well I know it’s wrong to create a song
In the ashes of what we believe in
But I have a war to fight
And wrong or right
I’ll escape from what I was deceived in
I guess now we’re enemies
You’ll make love to me with your fingers crossed
When we do it
Depending on chemistry
To make us free, yeah
We built us a bomb
Then we threw it
And here in the wreckage dear
With the sky so clear,
But the smoke hides the sun up above us
We’ll always have just one thing
That we love fighting
Airplane in the upper atmosphere
That whole town is one dim light from here
Read out on the screen says twelve below
It's getting cold
Which means it's time to go
Marked by the evening coming on
Ending with the ending of a song
I make up words and you play guitar
It lets us know at least we've come this far
I must have seen that house a hundred times
The road descends, it bends and then it climbs
If we record it maybe it will last
If we keep it still it won't go by so fast
So fast
I dreamed we fell apart
It seems to end and then it seems to start
I dreamed we fell apart
It seems to end and then it seems to start
In the highest room that we could find where all the
light streamed in
We took apart the final pieces of what might have been
Play the saxophone as loud as you can and I will play
the drums
We'll drink all night until we're sick or until the
morning comes
It's time for us to fall apart, it's time for us to go
It's time to roll the tent and pull the stakes and
close another show
This trunk is getting empty, you lose an object in each
town
Things are thrown away without you knowing or buried
underground
And you can't go back to look for them because there's
never time
You keep track of your life and I'll keep track of mine
You keep track of your lost life and I'll keep track of
mine
We were trapped up in the highest room when they came
to look for us
We were drying our hair with a towel we shared between
the two of us
They knocked on the door and called our name in a voice
so soft but strong
They said, “we'll wait some time for you to come but we
will not wait long'
We breathed the last brief beat of freedom in as they
waited by the door
Felt the heat of their quiet threats, duty bound to do
some more
And so like the pitiable heroes we always dreamed to be
I set a flame to your blue dress and you set fire to me
And in that golden instant you and I were both divine
I was saving your life and you were saving mine
In the highest room
Beneath the bleeding moon
I was saving your sweet life
I guess that we’ve been friends for a while now baby
Yeah, I would even ask you to my wedding day
We’ll drink away the pain of the one you lost this time
But there’s a few things that I have to say
I’m tired of seeing you buried in the twilight
Cradling your heart, watching people play
Am I ever gonna catch you in the early morning?
Are you ever gonna shine for us all someday?
Or will you spend your life in the cinema?
How do you sleep in the cinema alone?
Do you keep in touch with the one that killed you?
The one that made you start to dream your life away?
Get on the telephone and tell her you’re alone
And if she doesn’t take you back
It’s gonna stay that way
There’s nothing left to see in the final reel
I haven’t seen the movie but I know the play
The lovers reunite, but it’s not your face up there
The sky is bright, but it’s not the way
That’s just the cinema
Your love will die in the cinema
Alone.
So dream all you like
Dream all you like, you’re gonna end up alone
Dream all you like, dream all you like
You’re gonna end up all alone
Dream all you like, dream all you like
Cuz when it’s lights up
Cinnamon could never do justice
To the way you look tonight
Proud-faced, your eyes are all shiny
In the sub-zero dawning light
I drove like a madman to get here
And you barely remember my name
I called from the road and you told me to come
‘Cause you had a bad case of the shame
Shame, shame, shame
Shame, shame, shame
What’s your game?
Shame, shame, shame
The towers of glass are like idols
And I’m running away from them now
One morning, they’ll all turn to ashes
I don’t want to be here to see how
It’s hard for two weeks now, I figure
And all the traps are the color of sand
The skyline is made out of stories
So tell me yours while you’re holding my hand
Hand, hand, hand
Hand, hand, hand
You’ll never understand me
So take my hand, hand, hand
It’s hard for two weeks now, I figure
And all the traps are the color of sand
The skyline is made out of stories
Tell me yours while you’re holding my hand
While you’re holding my hand
Megaplex in the town centre
Driven by my sister here
Unafraid and unaware
That is when I saw you there
Telephone spies in every corner
A policeman is trying to warn ya
Gave me the look, gave me the caution
Touching me like it was an audition
Then you looked at me
Pointed out that I was drunk on whiskey
You looked at me
Said, “let's get incredibly drunk on whiskey'
Megaplex and they're closing the floor court down
Fleetwood Mac and The Landslide plays in the background
The dead are coming to life in our hometown
Holding their loved ones, muttering
“I was lost and now I'm found'
Called my sister to come but she's not there
You and I will have to walk from here
If I had known, I would have made it clear:
As soon as I'm legal, this love affair is over
Help me up
I need you to help me up
Help me be sick
I need you to help me be sick
Help me to sleep
I need you to help me to sleep
Help me to dream
The Mississippi River, he's a friend of mine
And the people livin' in this town, they can be so fine
There's a big line runnin' straight down old Union Avenue
And it breaks that southern lady's heart in two
There's an old black man sittin' out front of a shotgun house
And on the other side of town there's a rich man sittin' on a velvet couch
Nobody forgives what happened thirty years ago
But we gotta forgive the past and that's for sure
Well, it should be so plain to see
That it comes down to you and me
And if we all just come together
And if we all just take a stand
Oh, we could heal the hurtin' and the broken-hearted people
And everybody understand
Gotta all just come together, yeah
Ridin' down Beale Street, pop tunes on my radio
Well, I love this Delta mama, it's all I know
Well, you know I have a dream about black and white and a state of grace
But it's gonna take more than a dream to fix this place
You know it's hard as it can be
To turn the tide of history
But if we all just come together
And if we all just take a stand
We could heal the hurtin' and the broken-hearted people
Everybody understand
Well, if we all just come together
If we all just take a stand
We could heal the hurtin' and the broken-hearted people
And everybody understand, yeah
We all went to Sunday school and everybody learned the golden rule
I read about the writing on the wall
Learned how Joseph had a nice coat, Noah had a big boat
But then they said sweet Jesus loves us all
And I believe
If we all just come together
If we all just take a stand, yeah yeah yeah
Oh, we could heal the hurtin' and the broken-hearted people
And everybody understand
Well, if we all just come together
Well, if we all just take a stand
We could heal the hurtin' and the broken-hearted people
All across this land
Gotta all just come together, yeah
The Mississippi River, he's a friend of mine
And the people livin' in this town, they can be so fine
Reach out your hand to your brother
Reach out your hand to your sister
Reach out your hand to your brother
"Sooner or later this happens to everyone, to everyone"
You can live your life lonely
Heavy as stone
Live your life lonely
And walking alone
Say this all you want
But I don't believe that it's true
Cause when you least expect
Waiting 'round the corner for you
Love comes quickly and whatever you do
You can't stop falling
Love comes quickly and whatever you do
You can't stop falling
You can live a life of luxury
If that's what you want
Taste forbidden pleasures
Whatever you want
You can fly away to the end of the world
But where does it get you?
Cause when you least expect it
Just what you least expect
Love comes quickly and whatever you do
You can't stop falling
Love comes quickly and whatever you do
You can't stop falling
I know it sounds ridiculous, but speaking from
experience
It may seem romantic, that's no defense
Love will always get to you
"Sooner or later this happens to everyone, to everyone"
You can fly away to the end of the world
But where does it get you?
Love comes quickly and whatever you do
You can't stop falling, ah
Love comes quickly and whatever you do
You can't stop falling, ah
Love comes quickly and whatever you do
You can't stop falling, ah
Love comes quickly and whatever you do
You can't stop falling

Help me information more than that I cannot add
Only that I miss her and all the times we had
But we were torn apart because her ma did not agree
She tore apart our happy home in Memphis Tennessee
Break
Help me information more than that I cannot add
Only that I miss her and all the times we had
But we were torn apart because her ma did not agree
She tore apart our happy home in Memphis Tennessee
Last time I saw Marie she was waving me goodbye
With hurry home drops on her cheek that trickled from her eye
Marie is only six years old, oh information please
It's not the note so reminiscent
Of everything I've ever known
That makes me want to be with you
Beneath the shimmering waves of moonlight
That dance and tremble at our feet
I want you in my arms and in my soul
No matter what the future holds
You know tonight they kiss in Memphis
And trace the writing on the wall
Tonight my soul has wings
Drifting in an ancient sky
Deep within the Valley of the Kings
Tonight there's not a a trace of Elvis
To claim the magic southern sky
And how I want to be with you
And I can feel the breath of angels
A spirit that I can't deny
That reaches out across three thousand years
Dissolves my heart in joy and tears
You know tonight they kiss in Memphis
And trace the writing on the wall
Tonight my soul has wings
Drifting in an ancient sky
Deep within the Valley of the Kings
In my heart there's a song that's been waiting
It's been held like a coil on a spring
Let it run, let it fly
Changing my life with its freedom ring
You know tonight they kiss in Memphis
And trace the writing on the wall
Tonight my soul has wings
Drifting in an ancient sky
Seeing with an eagle's eye
Janis Ian Memphis Lyrics:
[Ian:]
We were standing by the river,
Staring into town.
All the world was on his shoulders,
The tears were raining down.
All along the southern skyline,
City lights begin to loom.
[Nelson:]
He said, "If you only knew her,
The way that I do, sir,
You would be crying too."
[Both:]
If you could see Memphis,
[Nelson:]
The way that I do,
[Both:]
She would look different to you.
[Nelson:]
Queen of the delta,
[Both:]
Tip your tiara,
Memphis, the belle of the blues.
[Nelson:]
Streets were filled with cotton.
And music filled the air.
All the paddle boats came rollin',
From east of everywhere.
Now the streets are filled with silence,
And songs no one can hear.
But her memory lingers,
It slips through my fingers,
[Both:]
And into this river of tears.
[Both:]
If you could see Memphis,
The way that I do,
She would look different to you.
[Nelson:]
Queen of the delta,
[Both:]
Tip your tiara,
Memphis, the belle of the blues.
[Instrumental break featuring Chet Atkins on guitar.]
[Both:]
So roll on, roll on.
[Nelson:]
My sweet magnolia,
[Both:]
Roll on.
Now the memory lingers,
It slips to my fingers.
[Nelson:]
And into this,
[Both:]
River of tears.
[Both:]
If you could see Memphis,
The way that I do,
She would look different to you.
[Nelson:]
Queen of the delta,
[Both:]
Tip your tiara.
[Ian:]
Memphis the belle of the blue-hoo-hoo-oos.
[Nelson:]
All of the girls hoping for better things
She didn’t care; she was unaware
All that she wanted was there in the backyard
Blue sky, balloons in the afternoons
Here in the dark, she feels her first heartbeat
She throws back the shade to the sunshine
Nothing could stop him from moving closer
He turns to a clock as their legs entwine
All of the boys waiting for something
He didn’t wait; he took everything
His face like a child’s, his hands like an old man’s
He sang all the time and he couldn’t sing
Here in the dark, he wants to forget her
Run to the rooftop and fly away
She covers his eyes and tells him to make a wish
He laughs, but it ends in a sigh
He laughs, but it ends in a sigh
He laughs
But it ends
He found a place to hide
High up in the trees
He rubbed his face with soil
And dreamed that he was free
A few days later on
He walked back into town
Resigned to try and stop
Resigned to settle down
His eyes were filled with light
His eyes were filled with light
He choked upon his tears and knew
He would be alright
He found a place to live
On Desert Avenue
He leaned out of the window
And watch his whole life through
Sure that he was missing
The things that bloom at night
Sure that if he saw them
If the streetlamps caught them right
His eyes would fill with light
His eyes would fill with light
He would choke upon his tears for once
He would be alright
Out across the rooftops
Out towards the hills
One day he will see it
But for now he's waiting still
Out across the rooftops
I've lived my whole life, made mistakes,
From the get-go,
Street kid from the start, right, no regrets though,
I do what I want, yeah, cuz I said so,
No sleep for the wicked, right? No, bed no.
Rollin' with the punk rockers,
I ain't lying,
Fake guns, fake bands,
Fake punk, I ain't buying,
Hit the road,
All I know,
Rock and roll ain't dying, about fifteen deep,
We hit the streets low ridin.
By the time we made it to New Orleans,
It must have been half past three.
By the time we made it to Memphis,
We were crazy.
Tonight, you are our blanket,
And are gonna keep us warm,
Tonight, protect us from the storm.
He was back, causing troubled
Time's they're a comin' round,
Oh no, let me go to another round,
Tuesday night is when the storm's gonna settle down,
Had a glance, circumstance,
Don't cause, trouble bound,
She's the one, all alone, I come lookin',
Smoke and mirrors as I watch,
Aw, that girl was trippin',
It's no fun, lost again,
To have your heart broken,
Greed is from a world that is built on hustling.
By the time we made it to New Orleans,
It must have been half past three.
By the time we made it to Memphis,
We were crazy.
Tonight, draw a blanket,
and you're gonna keep us warm,
Tonight, protect us from the storm.
The breaks were falling when they had failed,
Every road can lead ya straight down to fucking hell,
Rain stopped falling when they had failed,
Every road can take ya straight down to hell.
Doing nothing here, everyone straight trippin,
Happy at times, are gone, past starts slippin,
This will be enough to keep me on the road livin,
Good every night, in a different city I'll be sleepin,
Let me know, here we go, met a girl named Lola,
Is she here? Is she there? Drinking Jack and cola,
She says, "Tim, where ya been? I got somethin' to show ya,
Lola fired off her clothes and started rock and rollin!
By the time we made it to New Orleans,
It must have been half past three.
By the time we made it to Memphis,
We were crazy.
Tonight, draw a blanket,
and you're goona keep us warm,
Tonight, protect us from the storm.
Long distance information, give me Memphis Tennessee
Help me find the party trying to get in touch with me
She did not leave her number, but I know who placed the call
My uncle took the message and he wrote it on the wall
Help me, information, get in touch with my Marie
She's the only one who'd call me here from Memphis Tennessee
Her home is on the south side, high up on a ridge
Just a half a mile from the Mississippi Bridge
Last time I saw Marie she was waving me good-bye
She had hurry home drops on her cheek that trickled from her eye
But we were pulled apart because her mom did not agree
And broke apart our happy home in Memphis Tennessee
Help me, information, more than that I cannot add
Only that I miss that girl and all the fun we had
Marie was only six years old, information please
Try to put me through to her in Memphis Tennessee
I said, help me, information, more than that I cannot add

"He can't get away with by the time,
he gets in front of the jury he'll be a good boy;" said man one.
At a little before 5'oclock he when through the basement.
"Yes or no!" demanded man two bantering humor dry in his throat.
"Is there more than what she gave you?"
questioned man three as a growing flicker.
Waved across his eyes. "No!"
The space surrounds constitutes a classic climate
this happens to now everyone in the room.
You feel traces a dying sound listen to the time of your life.
Standstill panic stricken.
Ringing the bells of a empty houses someone answers and calls you,
transfixed by committed you say "I ain't no guillotine"
The girl spoke from the doorway in her rasping voice
"what he wants is in the house" the words hung there for a moment.
Bending forward she plucked she plucked the ashes from his cigarette
and said something nobody could understand.
Nobody could understand, nobody could understand.
One moment of irritation you call back "why me?"
the vantage point above the street
can be exhilarating falling back to a perspective odyssey.
A track of thunder. Tower lust of decomposed intensity.

You breathing into my mouth
I'll take it
I'll take it for you
You wanna sing
Then sing it for me
You got somehitng
Left to say
Untie me
We're taking away
Unlikely
Out of time
When you still got
So much to say
I'll write it
A song for you
But oh
What a way to go
So peaceful
You're smiling
Oh what a way to go
I'm with you
I'm singing
You said
There's a special place
And it's scaring
The shit out of me
In Memphis
On Valentine's day
You wrote it
In a letter to me
Well I wish I had given you more time
To say thank you
My beautiful friend
But sometimes you gotta send it away
To bring it
To bring it back again
But oh what a way to go
So peaceful
He's smiling
Oh what a way to go
I'm with you
I'm singing
You'll always
Have open eyes
You'll always
Have a special place
In Memphis
On Valentine's day
Die suddenly
At a wonderful age
We're ready
We're ready to go
When you still got so much to say
Somehow I know
You drank and stole
Receiving just everything
But oh
What a way to go
So peaceful
You're smiling
Oh what a way to go
I know that you're smiling
What a way to go
So peaceful
I'm singing
What a way to go
I know that
You're smiling
You're peaceful
You're smiling
You're peaceful
You're smiling
I know that
You're smiling
You're peaceful
West of the valley you left
Guided by stars and the wind
Led by a volley of birds
You reach home with nothing
Each moment sleeps, left behind
The last person who saw you was kind
She said, “look to your flesh you seem cold
Take me before we get old'
The dreams that you had are forgotten
A diary left under a bed
And the light slanted in from the curtains
All the things written in there are dead
Approaching the last moments pass
And next comes the place you began
Your face is a dark map of worries
But you smile as you start to run
Drop your pack, drop your dial
And just fall for a while
And when you hit dirt you feel nothing
Sweep the floor now and take down the curtain
Let the light flood into the house
Open the doors, let the wind blow
Let all those dead hours stumble out
Watch as they run towards the sea
Until they diminish to nothing
Make your way up to the bedroom
Let the pillow collapse round your head
Sing the lullaby about when we were living
And sing the one about when we'll be dead
Sleep a sleep without dreams for ten hours
And wake up as heavy as lead
In the ghost town
inside of my heart
all the downtown
is parking lots
At the drug store
at 9th & Payne
they stock the bitter pills
They say
Will we see you again next Tuesday?
What more can we do for you, Mr Johnson, sir?
Pass the word around them Golden Pools
I've been elected King of the Fools
At the barber shop
they never close
They'll cut your hair
They'll shine your suit
Ya look fine, mistah
Ya look sharp
We can tell how well you play the part!
Pass the word around them Golden Pools
I've been elected King of the Fools
In the ghost town
inside of my heart
all the downtown
is parking lots
And in the rain the streets are on fire...
At the city hall the mayor gives away the key
He says
Look around
Make yourself at home
Everything we do for you is our pleasure!
Pass the word around them Golden Pools
I've been elected King of the Fools
In the ghost town
inside of my heart
all your downtown

She's the only one who'd call me here from Memphis,
Tennessee
Her home is on the south side, high up on a ridge
She was seventeen left Arkansas moved here on her own
After mom's boyfriend and a tornado tore up her home
She brought her small dog with her but she left behind her old clothes
She emptied out albums of pictures by the side of the road
She'd make some money then she would leave
But Memphis is not what it used to be
She got a job in Memphis cause she lied 'bout her age
Said she'd give it a try up on the stage
At the Platinum Plus club she was a dancing, dancing to the drugs and the music
If her body was a weapon, she had learned how to use it
So give her the money if you wanted to see
Memphis is not what it used to be
She made three thousand a week in that East Memphis club
Til' the Fed's shut it down for running drugs
Then the money got tight but she's got a solution
She and some of the girls next summer moving down to Houston
I asked her what else in town should I see
it's all around it's all you conceal
it's all around
it's all you can feel
it's all around so ackward and real
it's all around
and won't let you heal
it's all around
it's all you can hear
it's all around each truth that we fear
it's all around
and no one is near
another night
and then disappear
who said it's over
i want you beside me
wearing the salt that we wept
it's all around it's all you can hear
it's all around
each word that we fear
it's all around
this shadow so near
it's all around
it's our souvenir
who comes to hold you when
no one remember
who makes that bed where we slept
hotel in memphis
i want you to find me

Well, Long Distance Information
Give me Memphis, Tennessee
Help me find a party
That tried to get in touch with me
Did not leave a number
But I know who placed the call
'Cause my uncle took the message
And he wrote it on the wall
Yeah, help me, Information
Get in touch with my Marie
She's the only one who'd call me here
From Memphis, Tennessee
Her home is on the southside
High upon a ridge
Just a half a mile
From the Mississippi Bridge
Oh help me, Information
More than that I cannot add
Only that I miss her
And all the fun we had
Marie was torn apart
Because her mom did not agree
Tore apart our happy home
In Memphis, Tennessee
Oh last time I saw Marie
She's wavin' me goodbye
With hurry home drops on her cheek
Trickle from her eye
Marie is only six years old
Information, please
Try to put me through to her
Because of you I will always go to Memphis
Because of you it will always feel like home
I should have known the right answer was the simplest
I should have trusted in the things I've always known
I was unprepared for feeling like I do
And I was unprepared for all the things that came along with you
So I'm sorry
That I couldn't save you
That I couldn't be what you needed
Please forgive me
Oh you know I tried
Cuz I'm still on my hands and knees
You'd better believe
That I'd stay here till you could pull us up
Oh but baby, I guess sometimes love is not enough
Because of you I may always need a light on
Just to prove what I feel is just your ghost
And baby because of you I'll never drink too much
And I'll never understand how one drop could drown me
How it could steal your love
So I'm sorry
That I couldn't save you
That I couldn't be what you needed
Please forgive me
Oh you know I tried
Cuz I'm still on my hands and knees
You'd better believe
That I'd stay here till you could pull us up
Oh but baby, I guess sometimes love is not enough
Sometimes when the wind blows
I'll pretend that is you
Telling me it's not my fault
That I couldn't get through
And baby I'll always be sorry
That I couldn't save you
I could not save you
Please forgive me
Oh you know I've tried
Cause I am still on my hands and knees
You'd better believe that I'd stay here Till you could pull us up Oh, but baby, I guess sometimes love is not enough
As kids we used to watch them in the alley come and go
We could see the imprints of their footprints in the
snow
They'd turn the corner out of sight
And we'd always let them go
We didn't want to know
I saw one disappear in to the dusk living room
Rain was beating on the sidewalk
But I heard him hum a tune
The melody familiar, but higher than I knew it
I ran up to my bed
And I quickly got into it
Hid my head beneath the covers,
Counted up to ten
I looked around the room
And they were back again
Sitting at my bedside, watching over me
Turned the lock upon my door
And swallowed up the key
They stroked my head and whispered,
“Now we'll never set you free'
And they never set me free
The years turned into ages
And I could see them still
Sometimes moving like an angel
Sometimes coming for the kill
They made me hide my real face
Quite against my will
I admit it was a thrill
Now everywhere I go
And in everything I do
It's them who's haunting me
And it's me who's haunting you
And I'll follow you until the day
That you're a spirit too
Half a mile from where we used to meet
Fourteenth and Hollow Tree--the dead end of the street
Five minutes late and wondering if you're there
Three grams deep and wondering if you care
About me
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
Sunday
I'm stuck on Sunday
The days drift by just like you said they would
The drugs are clean, the conversation's good
Outside on the lawn I hear you say
"I suddenly realize that I've forgotten everything,
everything, everything"
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
Sunday
I'm stuck on Sunday
I tried, yes I tried
I almost left myself for dead
I almost cried, or could it be
That you really want what's good for me
Do you really want what's good for me?
Do you really want what's good for me?
Do you really?
Try to go to sleep
I'll stay awake tonight
The rattle of the window
The frost diffuses light
The yard is white with snow
Beyond, the ink black sea
The corridor is dark now
This house and you and me
Night up and above us
Night down below
I try to let it go
Murder mystery
Lies open on my chest
Sleep begins to take me
My mind wants me to rest
An hour left ‘til dawn
I sign to pass the time
But I forget the words now
I can't recall the rhyme
I get to the chorus
Certain of the song
And then it's gone
The room is filled with sleep
But I can hear you dream
And even with your arms above your head
You're stronger than you seem
But if they come for us
I won't wake you from your sleep
I said that I'd defend you
And that's a promise that I'll keep
A noise at the gate now
My pulse starts to run
Here comes the sun
I think I see the sun
