Overvaluing and overpraising children can contribute to the development of narcissism, researchers have found.

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science answers a long-standing question of whether narcissistic traits develop as a result of too much or too little parental attention.

+Donald Cleland I agree with you that some children need correction from their elders at times. But I also think a natural life is needed to teach children pragmatism and self-discipline. Eg join the scouts.

The leaders of Australia's top 100 companies earn an average of $4.8 million a year, which is 100 times the median minimum wage in this country.

New research has now questioned whether performance based pay for CEOs actually delivers the best outcomes for companies and shareholders.

Are there benefits of limiting CEO pay?

I was unaware of your company's minimum pay. I referred to minimum wage in general (see comment). Also unaware of regular top-ups. My bad.

For those who find giving a sample of blood a little scary, the idea of a zombie nurse covered in the stuff is enough to send a chill down your spine.

The Great Zombie Escape saw hundreds of 'humans' chased along a five kilometre course at Central Queensland University all in the name of a good cause - raising funds for an international medical exchange.

Giving blood isn't scary like these zombies and there's always a need for it. Not everyone can give but most people can. A good way to share your good health.

Just over six years ago a man in Wisconsin started the first Little Free Library - a simple wooden box in his front yard - and he filled it with books for any passerby to take.

But now some local councils have decided that these libraries amount to "illegal detached structures" and the owners are being threatened with fines unless they remove them.

I don't think it's nearly as engaging and awesome as the first series. But I'm still enjoying it. Fortitude is picking up too.

Tony Abbott's key Indigenous advisers have slammed his description of living in remote communities as a "lifestyle choice", saying the statement is "hopeless", "disrespectful" and simplistic.

Yesterday, Mr Abbott backed a plan in Western Australia to close more than 100 remote communities, saying "what we can't do is endlessly subsidise lifestyle choices".

A senior surgeon who attracted several complaints over comments that women in her field should protect their careers by "complying with requests" for sex is standing by the remark.

"What I tell my trainees is that, if you are approached for sex, probably the safest thing to do in terms of your career is to comply with the request," she said after the launch.

"Of course I don't condone any form of sexual harassment, and the advice that I gave to potential surgical trainees was irony, but unfortunately that is the truth at the moment — that women do not get supported if they make a complaint," she told the ABC.

The Federal Government says a renewable energy target (RET) agreement with the clean energy sector is "very close" after fresh talks over the weekend.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt had discussions with the Clean Energy Council and the Australian Industry Group.

Mr Hunt said he hoped an agreement with the clean energy sector would encourage Labor to support a deal.

Forgive me for being a bit cynical about the Coalition's objectives and policies, then.  Yes, I'm all for the RET.  But I'm against reducing it just because we're using less power.

The loss of support services is causing alarm, especially in regional areas where victims are already isolated.

I am a survuvor of DV and I know it is a viscious cycle. I have help wherever and whenever I want it. Unfortunately I have allowed my sons to be brought up in such an environment and hence the cycle continues. Its not an open and shut case of DV. Many aspects are involved both mental and spiritual aspects. I could go on forever about the situation though im not going to. I suppose actions speak louder than words.
