The term quality of life is used to evaluate the general well-being of individuals and societies. The term is used in a wide range of contexts, including the fields of international development, healthcare, and politics. Quality of life should not be confused with the concept of standard of living, which is based primarily on income. Instead, standard indicators of the quality of life include not only wealth and employment, but also the built environment, physical and mental health, education, recreation and leisure time, and social belonging.
Also frequently related are concepts such as freedom, human rights, and happiness. However, since happiness is subjective and hard to measure, other measures are generally given priority. It has also been shown that happiness, as much as it can be measured, does not necessarily increase correspondingly with the comfort that results from increasing income. As a result, standard of living should not be taken to be a measure of happiness.

Abraham-Hicks General Well Being Meditation - first 15 minutes followed by two instrumental pieces from the CD Meditation Moods by Dean and Dudley Evanson, then 30 minutes of ocean waves recorded on a beach near Lahaina, Maui at 5 in the morning.
I added the extra music and ocean sounds because I always want the meditation to last longer and this lets me do that. The music by the Evansons is especially nice!
The CD from which the meditations come can be found in the book "Getting into the Vortex: Guided Meditations CD and User Guide" available from Abraham-Hicks.com. The user guide is well worth having and has a chapter devoted to each of the four meditations. If you are doing the meditation for the first time you should be aware that you breathe in for 3 pulses of the music and breath out for five pulses. The theory behind the meditations is that by focusing your conscious mind on keeping track of your breathing you are able to stop your usual patterns of thought which are really really just habits of thought you've acquired from living your life in a semi-aware state for umpteen years. Our usual habits of thought tend to be a mishmash of negative and positive vibrations that in turn yield a life of negative and positive encounters in the world at large as the universe mirrors back to us what our brain is thinking. Doing the focused mediation stops the habitual thought patterns and lets our brain emanate thought patterns more in tune with our natural state of well-being. Abraham likens it to releasing a cork that has been held under water - the cork floats to the surface naturally of its own accord. When we stop our usual thought patterns our vibration raises naturally.
The benefits of meditation are several fold: First, you are consciously aware that by using your power of focus (to count your breaths in and out) you have been able to create within yourself a state of being that feels pretty good and sometimes downright euphoric. It is nice to know that such a state can be created within you without the use of drugs, alcohol, sex or any of the myriad other things we use to feel good or minimize feeling bad. Second, for a short time you emit more naturally positive thought patterns that will eventually be experienced by you as the universe at large reflects back to you what you are emanating - the Law of Attraction in action. Third, focusing on your breathing brings about an increased awareness of how you are feeling internally, this increased inner awareness will eventually lead to an increased awareness of how you are feeling emotionally on a day to day, hour by hour and eventually, second by second basis. Our emotions come as a response to thoughts and one of Abraham's main teachings is that our emotions are our guidance system - our natural GPS - to guide us into a more and more wonderful life. Choosing thoughts that FEEL good, slowly but surely, increases our emanation of thought patterns that are always being reflected back to us by the world at large as experiences that feel good.

STORYLINE
Crews working to seal BP's blown-out well in the Gulf of Mexico once and for all need to finish one more test on a cement plug before declaring the well permanently dead, officials said on Saturday.
Once the pressure and weight test was finished and officials were confident the seal would hold permanently, the well would be declared dead, according to the offshore installation manager on the Development Driller III vessel.
That was expected to occur late on Saturday, but an announcement may not come until Sunday.
Even aboard the Development Driller III - the ship that drilled the relief well and allowed crews to pump in the cement for the plug - celebrations were muted on Saturday.
The DDIII crew began finishing their work on Thursday, when the relief well being drilled intersected BP's blown-out well.
The cement - which will permanently plug the blown-out well from the bottom - started flowing on Friday.
It had hardened by Saturday, leaving only the pressure test.
Until the test was finished, men in red work suits and mud-splattered hardhats were operating heavy hydraulic machines being used to lift the drill pipe back to the deck of the DDIII vessel.
Two men sitting in black leather chairs used joysticks to maneouvre the massive machines on the deck, which were lifting the equipment that was thousands of feet (metres) below.
The impending death of BP's blown-out oil well will bring one piece of the catastrophe that began five months ago to an anticlimactic end - after all, the gusher was capped in July.
This, though, is an important milestone for the still-weary residents of the Gulf Coast: an assurance that not so much as a trickle of oil will ever seep from the well that already has ruined so much since the disaster first started.
The tragedy began on 20 April, when an explosion killed 11 workers, sank a drilling rig and led to the worst offshore oil spill in US history.
The well spewed 206 (m) million gallons (778 million litres) of oil until the gusher was first stopped in mid-July with a temporary cap.

Dr. Kimberly Schonert-Reichl is the Principal Investigator of the Middle Years Development Instrument (MDI). She is a Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education at the University of British Columbia. For more than 20 years, Kim’s research has focused on the social and emotional learning (SEL) and development of children and adolescents with a particular emphasis on identifying the processes and mechanisms that foster children’s positive human qualities such as empathy, altruism, and resiliency.
The Middle Years Development Instrument (MDI) is a scientifically validated self-report survey for 4th and 7th grade students that gathers important information on the social and emotional lives of children both inside and outside of school – providing actionable results on five dimensions of well-being strongly linked to health and academic achievement.

The Science of Being Well applies the power of positive thinking to getting and maintaining good physical health. According to Wallace Wattles, thought is far more powerful than we imagine. It is the way in which humans can literally reshape reality according to their will; it is how we interact with the substance of the universe. Students of religious studies will be intrigued by this book from the New Thought tradition. And those wanting a new way to improve their health may find Wattles' approach empowering.
Wallace Delois Wattles was an American author. A New Thought writer, he remains personally somewhat obscure, but his writing has been widely quoted and remains in print in the New Thought and self-help movements.
Wattles' best known work is a 1910 book called The Science of Getting Rich in which he explained how to become wealthy.
