On March 24, 2010, Boston University School of Public Health held its annual Career Fair, connecting students and alumni with more than forty public health organizations recruiting for jobs, internships and special projects. Students and grads attended in search of all types of opportunities, from full-time positions to internships that would satisfy their required practicum, a fieldwork component of their master of public health degree. Employers from all areas of public health attended the fair, including recruiters from non-profits, academic institutions, hospitals, local and federal government agencies, and global health organizations. Marketing efforts that encourage mixing caffeinated "energy" drinks with alcohol often try to sway young people to believe that caffeine will offset the sedating effects of alcohol and increase alertness and stamina. But a new study led by researchers from the Boston University School of Public Health and the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University has found that the addition of caffeine to alcohol -- mixing Red Bull with vodka, for example -- has no effect on enhancing performance on a driving test or improving sustained attention or reaction times.

One hundred and fifty Boston University School of Public Health alumni, students, faculty and staff reconnected for a lively night of food, drinks and conversations November 8 at the School's annual alumni reception during the American Public Health Association's 2010 Annual Meeting. The reception took place at Jacks @ Jazz in Denver. Dean Robert Meenan presented the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Awards to Sarah Degnan Kambou, PhD, MPH '84, president of the International Center for Research on Women, and to Carol Karutu, MPH '05, an international project director at Intrahealth. Ali Noorani, MPH '99, the executive director of the National Immigration Forum, received his award in absentia. The BUSPH Alumni Reception is a yearly event held during the APHA Annual Meeting.

Public Health Minute: Simple Interventions Drastically Reduce Newborn Deaths in Zambia

Training community birth attendants in rural Zambia in a simple newborn resuscitation protocol reduced neonatal deaths by nearly 50 percent -- a finding that shows high potential to save lives in similar remote settings, a team of Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) international health researchers is reporting. Findings published Feb. 3 in the BMJ by the team from the BU Center for Global Health and Development show that training and equipping Zambian traditional birth attendants to perform a neonatal resuscitation intervention led to a net reduction of about 18 deaths per 1000 live births in the first 28 days of life -- a significant reduction in the overall neonatal mortality rate in Zambia, of about 34 deaths per 1000 live births.

Unlike most tours of Boston, the one for the latest crop of Boston University School of Public Health students skipped the typical "must-see" sights, like Fenway Park and Newbury Street. Instead, the tour bus traveled down the streets of Boston's less glamorous neighborhoods, such as Roxbury and Dorchester. While these areas are widely perceived as communities with high levels of violence and poverty, they are also home to vibrant neighborhoods, tight-knit community groups, and excellent health centers that serve populations of interest to BUSPH, which strives to improve the health of people in its nearby neighborhoods as well as around the world. A Breath of Fresh Air

Air quality has always been an issue in Chelsea, Mass., according to resident Madeleine Scammell, assistant professor of environmental health at Boston University School of Public Health. The city houses a number of potential environmental risks: tanks storing jet fuel for the nearby Boston airport, a large salt pile for use on area roads, and perpetually idling diesel trucks at the New England Produce Center. To take a closer look at air quality, residents have teamed up with BUSPH researchers to monitor particulate matter and map pollution hot spots in their neighborhoods. What Kids Drink: Adolescents' Alcohol Preferences

Nearly half of underage drinkers prefer liquor to beer and are more likely to binge drink, drink and drive, and engage in risky sexual behaviors, according to a new study led by a Boston University School of Public Health researcher. "We know a lot about the consumption of alcohol beverages among youth in terms of the volume of consumption," said lead author Michael Siegel, professor of community health sciences at BUSPH. "What we don't know a lot about is what underage drinkers are drinking." The results, to be published in the April edition of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found that 44 percent of underage drinkers surveyed favored liquor, while only 19 percent preferred beer. The study looked at 2007 data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted among public schools in eight states. The results were limited to the 7723 youth who reported consuming at least one drink of alcohol in the past month. For more information, visit sph.bu.edu

Public Health Minute: Annas Denounces Force Feeding of Guantanamo Prisoners

On February 23, 2010, George Annas, professor and chair of health law, bioethics & human rights, led a panel discussion at Boston University School of Public Health addressing the role physicians play in force feeding hunger strikers at Guantanamo Bay detention center, as well as in US prisons. The participation of physicians in the practice is an issue that some BUSPH faculty have taken the lead in opposing for years. In wake of the first anniversary of a report ordered by President Obama on conditions at Guantanamo, the group renewed its call for an end to the practice. The experts appealed to their colleagues and the public-at-large to put pressure on policy makers to end the practice, and urged professional medical associations to hold physicians accountable for participating in a practice that the World Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and other medical groups have also opposed.
